Wren is currently 4.5 years No Evidence of Disease (NED) and 5 years living with MBC when the statistics said only 12% of women with the Triple Negative subtype will make it to that five year mark. In this episode she talks about her current immunotherapy, the power behind science, research, and funding, and continuing to advocate for herself as a patient advocate.Five years of pure hardship, but more importantly, five years of growth and beauty. Although Wren's journey comes with scars, trauma, and grief, she is a beautiful, yet imperfect work of art, and reminder that we must have hope that there are better days to come. **This episode is a tribute to all the MBC Thrivers out there who we’ve lost along the way, and to the people who doubted I’d still be here five years later.**Understanding Triple Negative Breast Cancer: As breast cancer affects an increasing number of women under 50, more attention has turned to TNBC, an aggressive subtype that disproportionately affects younger women. TNBC is defined by what it lacks. While 85% of breast cancers are classified by three common markers—markers that give treatments a target to attack—TNBC has none of those, meaning it has fewer treatment options making it harder to treat. ____________________________________________________Living Our Breast Lives:Instagram: @livingourbreastlivesFounder: Wren @wren_morr on InstagramLightUpMBC Personal Fundraising Page:donate.metavivor.org/fundraiser/5564372METAvivor Research & Support:Instagram: @metavivorDonate to Stage IV Research: donate.metavivor.org

Incurably Funny with MBC Thriver - Annie Boyd!

AYA patients also known as adolescent & young adults are a unique population in the oncology space. They are often underserved and underrepresented. This results in missed or delayed diagnoses, insurance coverage issues, lack of support for sexual health and fertility concerns, lack of peer support groups, and impacts to career/education/relationships. Because of this, Wren and Cait decided what better way to highlight this very specific group of thrivers than to do a segment, and following the segment, have a very special AYA MBC thriver join us on the pod! Diagnosed with MBC at 26, Annie Boyd has made a place for herself and others on social media, specifically Tik Tok and Instagram, through sharing her experience with humor and honesty. Join Wren and Cait for their second episode together as our previous cohost, Brittany, steps away from the podcast to prioritize her health.Wren and Cait continue to have the hard and necessary discussions around having an MBC diagnosis. Although, it's supposed to be the "most wonderful time of the year," today's episode dives into the many hardships one may be facing during the holiday season;- grieving the loss of a loved one and/or your pre-cancer life- suffering from strained family relationships- increased or heightened anxiety and depression- juggling being immunocompromised in a world of many viruses- balancing holiday cheer and holiday fear as a thriver- the paranoia of treatment and/or scans falling on the days leading up to Christmas - the financial burden that comes with the many unrealistic high expectations of the "picture perfect" Christmas - and the list goes on and on!We must remind ourselves to protect our peace at all costs and to put ourselves first! Breast Cancer Awareness Month: PINKTOBER AF!

Join Wren and Brittany as they get LOUD for this Breast Cancer Awareness Episode as they discuss the dreaded "Pinktober" along with the many raw truths of Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness, and the funding that lacks, not just during BCAM but always. Happy October 13th! It is officially Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness DAY! It is OUR DAY! Tune into LightUpMBC Live tonight and help us generate funds going directly to MBC research! Why can BCAM be triggering for so many of us? Understanding the very big difference between early stage survivorship and late stage thrivership. It's hard to not feel like an outsider during the month of October since only one day is dedicated to Metastatic Breast Cancer. Hoping, praying, and manifesting that one day BCAM will mean more than just pink ribbons, pink boxing gloves, and prevention! That it will have an equal focus on the stage four thrivers, finding better treatments for us, and god willing, a cure for us all. Are we really that different? We do all this fundraising for early stage breast cancer and research, but 25-30% of early stagers will sadly become late stage. If that happens to you or someone you love, won't you wish that you did more for the MBC community when you had the chance? Funding for breast cancer research versus early detection benefits us all! Increasing the funding for MBC research is the only way to develop new treatments for the current MBC thrivers, and then the 30% of FUTURE thrivers. This is the importance behind RESEARCH NOT RIBBONS. Brittany's mom once asked: "If we pour all the funding into early detection for early stage breast cancer, then we never have to worry about early stagers becoming late stagers." Sadly, this couldn't be further from the truth. - 10% of MBC thrivers are diagnosed de novo, so what happens to those who are diagnosed out the gate metastatic? Does this research override these 10%? - If we know 30% of people are going to become MBC, why not work our way backwards and try and find a cure for the stage that kills, versus the stage that we already have treatments for. Some facts for you! 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime 30% of early stage survivors will later develop metastasis; months or even decades later 90% of MBC patients are initially diagnosed early stage where 10% are diagnosed de novo 10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary Let's talk about pink-washing! Think before you pink! During the dreaded month of October, companies and large corporations will profit off of survivors/thrivers suffering by putting pink ribbons on random products and selling them to the public. Are you aware that some of these companies may actually be contributing to a breast cancer diagnosis because of the chemicals found within these products? Yet, they're slapping a pink ribbon on the product and claiming to contribute to breast cancer research. The overbearing pink, the catchy slogans, the pushing early detection throughout the month isn't enough. It is only a bandaid for this deep- rooted issue. What can you do for MBC during BCAM and how can you donate? Did you know only about 2-5% overall breast cancer research in the US goes to MBC research? Know where your funds are going! Don't hesitate to ask, that's your right! METAvivor is the only non profit organization that solely funds MBC research through a scientific peer review process! 100% of all donations goes into MBC research grants which eventually leads to new treatments for all the different breast cancer subtypes. LightUpMBC Live: what started out as an awareness platform has now turned into a fundraising platform by producing a live broadcast for the world to hear stories directly from the MBC community. Standing in front of illuminated landmarks in the MBC colors while generating donations for MBC research. Educate, inspire, and raise critical funds for MBC research!! Help us share this episode to EDUCATE EDUCATE EDUCATE! Share this episode with your family, share with your friends, share with whomever, lets just get this important information out there to the public for once and for ALL!  Tune into LightUpMBC Live tonight at 8PM and support in any way that you can!

Who is She? Rediscovering Self-Love After Cancer

Join Wren and Brittany as they shed light on the beauty that lies within! Let's talk, SELF LOVE after CANCER! Loving yourself, physically, can be exhausting, let alone after a cancer diagnosis, whether early or late stage. Sometimes, the person looking back at you in the mirror is not someone you recognize anymore, and it's even harder if you no longer like what you see. Let's get back to that place of love, acceptance, patience, and remember to give ourselves grace for what our bodies have endured! Self love. Of course you can love yourself, emotionally. Whether you believe in your heart that you are a good person, whether you're proud of your beliefs and values, whether you can go to bed at night knowing that you did right by yourself and others. But what about loving ourselves, physically? How many people struggle with body image on a regular basis? Loving yourself physically is exhausting, let alone after a cancer diagnosis. The physical changes; the hair loss, the weight gain, the breast surgeries, the many scars. As women, you feel stripped of everything, especially your femininity, and the hardest part is no longer recognizing yourself anymore. We must remember that beauty absolutely exists AFTER breast cancer; body changes and all! Embrace it! A breast cancer diagnosis makes it really easy to lose yourself, but embracing the new you is what's most important. Life after breast cancer involves lifting ourselves up each and every day! The goal is to find that SELF LOVE again! "Sometimes you have to look at yourself as a butterfly; going through this whole transformation. Yes, you don't look like the person pre diagnosis, but look at how much you've grown as a person. Physical beauty is one thing, but we must remember that beauty radiates from the inside." - Brittany Follow us on instagram at @livingourbreastlives

Intimacy and MBC: Overcoming Challenges to Reclaim Your Sexual Health

Moist is always better! Join Wren and Brittany for this lighthearted and fun episode as they discuss the physical, mental, and emotional challenges that Metastatic Breast Cancer can have on one’s sex life, including the toll it can take on one’s vaginal tissue. Learn about the importance of vaginal health, how to get there if it is lacking, and ways to help. Enjoy this very personal and educational episode about how it’s never too late to get back to the sex life you envision for yourself regardless of the circumstance! You’re newly diagnosed with breast cancer; you’re thrown into early menopause way before your time, your libido has diminished, and intimacy has become non existent. What may cause painful intercourse once diagnosed with breast cancer?  Artificial menopause leading to vaginal dryness which can lead to painful intercourse or chafing Vaginal tissue losing its elasticity and the ability to stretch which causes the pelvic floor muscles to tighten. “If you don’t use it, you lose it!” Lack of good blood flow if those muscle are not used regularly as they once were Stress pockets in the pelvic floor area that contribute to the tightening of muscles Mental health struggles can block your libido/ sex drive - “if your mind ain’t right, the sex ain’t right!” What can you do to help overcome these struggles with intercourse or tightening dysfunctional vaginal muscles?  Schedule an appointment with a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist who specialize in pelvic floor dysfunction  Use different moisturizers to help restore the vaginal tissue (avoid hormonal moisturizers) Try Coconut oil! Dilator usage to help stretch the vaginal tissue and increase blood flow again Different yoga positions will help to relax those muscles  Mindfulness/ meditation consistently  Noticing your activators or stressors to help eliminate them Schedule an appointment with a sexual couples therapist or counselor  Vaginal botox which numbs the area; less chafing, paralyzing the muscles which numbs the area  Additionally, hear from Wren regarding what fertility treatments are like for a young cancer patient who wants to freeze their embryos before starting chemotherapy. Chemotherapy doesn’t just damage cancer cells, it can damage your ovaries as well. Freezing your eggs prior to the start of treatment allows you to have options in the future; whether that involves conceiving naturally on your own or involving a gestational carrier for surrogacy purposes.

Cancer Did Me Dirty at Thirty

Welcome to your blissful thirties! So we THOUGHT! Join Wren and Brittany as they go behind the scenes and discuss what it's like to have Metastatic Breast Cancer in your thirties when you thought life would look a lot differently for you. Your thirties typically involve marriage, having children, successful career paths, home ownership, traveling, socializing, but with a cancer diagnosis, its more about doctor appointments, biopsies, fertility treatments, surgeries, chemo treatments, battling side effects, and then there's early menopause which can cause vaginal dryness, hot flashes, and the possibility of future problems conceiving. Your thirties are supposed to be the "sweet spot" in life, but with a cancer diagnosis, the "sweet spot" becomes an abrupt change which comes with several hardships. BUT, we must remember that life is a journey, and journeys are unpredictable and unforeseeable, and they're usually not the way we anticipate them to be. But just because your journey is not what you expected, doesn't make it any less beautiful. And all those things you feel might have been taken from you because of the cancer diagnosis at such a young age; think about all of the things that cancer HAS given you, and the life you still have, and the life you still have coming. Topics discussed on today's episode: Age has a lot do with it, especially when you're the youngest person in the cancer center. Wren and Brittany discuss in great depth what that feels like. What about having babies? When you're in your thirties and on lifelong treatment, and dependent on this treatment, how do you choose between saving your life and remaining on this treatment or wanting to experience motherhood which is an experience that was taken from you? What about being in your thirties and being forced to think about the possibility of dying? MBC Thrivers have to worry about surviving versus living. You are forced to think morbidly about death and writing wills which is not a normal activity for someone so young. Expect light hearted with a sprinkle of dark humor, fun, informative, but most importantly, eye opening, to say the least. Being diagnosed as an AYA (adolescent young adult) cancer patient is complicated and messy, don't miss out on this opportunity to hear the many truths that come with an early aged diagnosis.  "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it." - Maya Angelou

Prioritizing Mental Health as Self Care with Guest Speaker, Psychologist, Dr. Mary Lacey

What happens when a behavioral health psychologist is diagnosed with breast cancer and begins struggling themselves? "Therapists need therapists. When it's your own shit, you can't see it. You've got all the training, and you've got all the skills, and you know what the book says, but when its you, you are a human being, and it's very tough to apply the same advice or knowledge to your own struggles then it is to offer to a patient." - Doctor Mary Lacey Join Wren and the incredible Doctor Mary Lacey, a behavioral health psychologist who is joining Living Our Breast Lives to gift us with all her beautiful knowledge and professional advice regarding mental health and what that experience might be like for someone diagnosed with breast cancer, early or late stage. Post Traumatic Growth: Can Suffering Have Transformative Power?

Most, if not all of us, have heard of Post-Traumatic Stress, but have you ever heard of Post-Traumatic Growth? Did you know that positive psychological change can be experienced as a result of the struggle with highly challenging life circumstances? People who endure psychological struggle following adversity can often see positive growth afterwards. This episode will prove that suffering can, in fact, have transformative power! On this powerful and enlightening episode, Wren and Brittany will talk about Post-Traumatic Growth, and it's five categories on the self-reporting scale (1. appreciation of life, 2. relationships with others, 3. new possibilities in life, 4. personal strength, 5. spiritual change) and whether they believe they have achieved or not. Post Traumatic Growth is the process of adapting while in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress. PTG is capable of changing one's personality as a whole. It's an enlightened mental state and only comes about if there's trauma. "When transformational coping is negative, one is likely to succumb to stress and revert to depression and worry. However, if the transformational coping is positive, it invites a surge of survival instincts, a higher level of recovery, and an increased inner strength to sale through the adversity."After listening to this episode, have you or someone you know experienced Post Traumatic Growth? Not You, Too! - Time for the Mothers to Share Cancer Journeys, too!

Ever wonder what it's like for both a mother and daughter to experience and navigate a breast cancer diagnosis at the same time? What about when both thirty-five year old daughters are the ones with Stage Four Metastatic Breast Cancer and their mothers are the ones with Stage 1 breast cancer, and Wren’s mother who’s also been living with Metastatic Ovarian Cancer for the last eight years.Join Wren and Brittany as they share two inspirational, yet very deep and educational conversations had with both their mothers who were also diagnosed with breast cancer, but early stage breast cancer. We always talk about how unbelievably different an early stage diagnosis is from a late stage diagnosis; but you never think you’ll have to share that very complicated space with a person whom you love most. One example is listening to how Brittany and her mom navigate and talk about the difficulty of “ringing the bell” as an early stager completing treatment when a late stager with MBC will never complete treatment or have the opportunity to ring that bell. Listen how Brittany and her mother talk about how important open communication is, along with the sensitivity levels that are needed when supporting one another on these very different journeys. “We were each a cheerleader for one another, but at the same time, you could tell we were on two entirely different teams. We have two separate journeys here, but we have to respect each others journeys and the different hardships they each bring”The very different perspectives are severely eye opening for anyone listening, and we are so grateful that our mothers graciously offered to join us on the podcast! Wren and her mother’s shared experience of living with a lifelong diagnosis is what allows them to lean on one another in times of need. It’s a very crucial conversation involving the importance of advocacy and what you can do to advocate for yourself, especially having the BRCA mutation. It's not necessarily the mother/daughter shared experience the four women had been longing for, but you'll be amazed at the level of physical/ emotional/ psychological/ and spiritual strength you feel when listening to both of these very different conversations. Having a positive attitude, being able to find laughter in the most uncomfortable of situations, and ultimately, having unconditional faith and belief in God is what will see you through this.

    The Unpredictability of Cancer

Join Wren & Brittany for this very emotional, YET highly educational episode as they discuss the fear behind having to possibly change treatment lines due to progression, the outrage in understanding that not every MBC Thriver will qualify for the available treatments readily on the market, and the fear behind making friendships in the MBC community when there's so much loss. Listen to Brittany as she shares details about her most recent scans and personal journey, and listen to the two very different perspectives as Wren and Brittany continue to discuss the unpredictability of Metastatic Breast Cancer and how important a sisterhood really is when dealing with the rollercoaster of emotions this disease continuously brings.

    Through a Different Lens - Wren’s Husband

Try not to get emotional as you listen to Wren's husband, Danny, get vulnerable as he talks openly about this journey they are on together! Get a better understanding from the caretakers point of view! We all know its never easy for the people we love to see us go through something as treacherous as a cancer diagnosis, so today's episode is meant to shed light on the bravery and hardship one's partner might face while experiencing a life altering situation with the person they love most. It's easy to get caught up and forget to acknowledge the person standing right next to you, the person who loves you most, the person who has never left your side. So, to all partners, spouses, family members, and caretakers, please know you are loved and very much appreciated!
