Twelve years ago four freshman high school students brainstroming in the Florida Keys, wanted to benefit our Indian River Lagoon-Estuary. They were enamored with the clear blue water of the Keys. Today Lines in the Lagoon keeps benfitting our local waterway. Sophmores Chloe Nye and Chandler Higdon join host Lori Davis. ORCA, Ocean Restoration and Conservation Association is the non-profit overseeing the health of the lagoon and is the benficiary of profits from Lines in the Lagoon. To date, nearly $20,000 is raised annually. 

November's ballot in Florida is looking at Amendment 3 being a strong part of voter's mindset. The amendment deals with exemptions and property taxes. Many people think if the amendment goes through services and education bottom lines will be affected. This isn't necessarily accurate. IF the Homestead is adopted the mileage rates can be increased instead, and that will keep the actual property tax amounts no different. The same amount of tax money will be collected. There is a lot of money on the table, and the idea is for municipalities to be more accountable and efficient with the money they have to appropriate. 

Our Vero Beach airport is flying high! Breeze, American and JetBlue Airlines supply non-stop service to some popular cities, including Boston and Raleigh, NC. In the coming weeks, the townfolk are invited to voice their opinion on some expansion ideas now being discussed. A new food vendor has been added to the airport and outside seating accommodations as well. 

Our Indian River Lagoon is a precious addition to our lifestyle. Facing environmental problems in 2011, we have learned so much about seagrass's impact on keeping the lagoon healthy and vibrant. One person can help keep the lagoon thriving. Use a car wash instead of washing your car in the driveway, or wash it on your lawn. Plant native flowers and trees - less impact on nature. Being aware of how precious the lagoon is, is a first start.

Talking with local residents and asking why they moved specifically to Vero Beach has raised many good answers and insights. Trying to keep Vero "Vero" is what most people treasure about this town. But what does that mean -- exactly? We want good growth. That means corraling the onslaught of spread, strip malls, and too much off-putting snags. Height restrictions have kept the small town feel. And many, many novel industries have leant the small town feel ongoing.

Fundraisers help keep the mission moving forward and helping people meet their needs. A former packing house turned resource center helps the nealry 800 people who enter the facility each day.

Our local ELC has so many neat programs. Kayak and paddle board rentals, pontoon boat excursions, and many other features are available during their 7 day a week schedule. Educate and empower at the ELC. So many opportubities for volunteers, locals, tourists, families and children to enjoy! 

Preventing, protection, mitigation and management is what the Emergency Mnagement Department is here for. This year's hurricane names have been released. Getting a plan of action that's specific to you/your family is key. Fuel up your car, get cash, water, LP gas, 7 days of food supplies, a generator and whatever else needed. Remember, emergency service will not be available during high wind hurricane time frames for the safety of the first responders. If you're in 'Mandatory Evacuation' please heed these warnings.

RISE Modern Wellness is sponsoring a fund raiser for Dancing With The Stars Justin Stolaj on May 2. Healthy Start provides care and supplies to moms and babies during pregnancy and beyond. Dancing With The Stars fund raiser is their biggest event of the year! 

It's the annual fundraiser for Healthy Start Coalition that benefits mom's and babies in IRC. This year there are 10 dancers and 10 dance coaches competing. in the IRC Dancing With The Stars. May 16 is the night to be at Riverside Theatre watching this dance spectacular!

It's Loggerhead Year! Join the 2-Mile Tipsy Turtle Fun Run that supports the Coastal Connection mission to keep the turtles coming back, nesting, and hatching more eggs. Turtles return to the place where they were born. Last year's nest count was nearly 10,000. 

Local youth experience the majic of learning music. For the past 23 years, this program has influenced, guided, and enthralled the youth of our commuity.

April 15th is THE day for baseball in Vero Beach! It's general admission, so get your tickets and get to Holman Stadium early. Any child wearing a jersey will be able to get on the field ,pre-game. It's a huge fundraiser for the United Way and their community programs..Included in those programs is VITA - the free income tax preperation available by apoointment at various locations. Bungalow Home Co. has two local showrooms beachside. One is specific for outdoor furniture, the other indoor. They feature many design firms, styles, price points and have high-end if you want high-end. Design services are available for your home, your bookcases, even an end table. How beautiful is that!

It's time to train the person that has a canine. Canine companion Jarrett Adcock lets us know how to manage your canine which is kind of like teaching a child. Barking dogs, dog that poop or pee in the house, crating the dog and much more goes into a well-trained dog. 

It's the busiest, best fundraiser of the year for St. Edward's School. A weekend extravganza, a must-attend! All proceeds go to the school and it's programs. 

The United Way is the gatekeeper for local organizations. Their programs are facilitated by volunteers who are on board to make that decision of where the money actually goes. Who benefits is their job. Using volunteers helps build a stronger community effort and involvement. Both St. Paddle's Day and CRP (Citizens' Review Process) are current programs looking for sponsorship. 

This year, it's 20,000 pairs of socks donated. The 8th Annual Sock Drive has multiplied year after year into the best success for our homeless, unhoused, and lower income people who appreciate the effort to keep their feet fantastic. 

Frog legs alligator tail, carnival rides, crafts, beer and a frogtastic time be had at the 35th annual festival. Susan Adams is president of the festivities which benefit Fellsmere's local youth sport programs. And inside information lets us know that the annual t-shirt is a collector's item. Each year there's a different design!

Doctor Melissa Dean overcame so much with faith and so much intervention from people who told her, "You shouldn't be here!" Turning her life into giving back and helping people came about because people gave her hope. Many of those people started out as strangers. One policeman stood by her time and again and 20 years later he contacted her to receive her good news and shared that he was glad to've known her because now he was dealing with his own daughter's disintegrating life.  

It's the 8th Annual Sock Drive! This year's goal is 20,000 pairs of socks. To date 35,000 pairs of socks have been collected and distributed to homelss people. Founder Barry Shapiro is continually surprised by the generosity of people helping people. Donate socks via Amazon as well. What an easy way to get involved. 

Elizabeth D. Kennedy & Co. founder Elizabeth Kennedy has maintained Vero Beach's party scene for 40+ years. From blue chesse puffs to turkey tetrazinni folks flock in for takeout and are privvy to fashinable parties galore.

Family history, being your own advocate, and preventative testing are major factors to be mindful of for breast cancer as well as other cancers. Dr. Nancy Baker and Tracey Zudans talk about family history and their own missions to keep educated about thwarting cancer.
