Matt Stellingwerf - COMEDY! PART 1 If you enjoyed the show please consider tipping the team at busk.co/50175/tip Magicians Only is sponsored by the fabulous MagicOnTheGo.com This week is part one of a HUGE two parter on COMEDY, and so much more. I was recently working with a fabulous comedian by the name of Matt Stellingwerf, a young rising star from New Zealand and now killing it in the UK. We met in a very unusual place, and through our many conversations I realized that he had a very eloquent and creative view of comedy and magicians.. and I really thought you should hear about it. Quite often we like to call ourselves comedy magicians, but are we actually COMEDY magicians? Do we know how to write comedy? Do we understand the fundamentals of connecting comedy with an audience? There aren’t that many books or even discussions on the blending of these two art forms so allow me to add a little bit to the conversation. Or rather allow Matt. He has a lot to say about comedy, magicians, and the ever elusive crowd work. Time Travel? I don’t need to tell you that we are living in strange and exciting days. Amid the global shake up it’s easy to lose our way, to forget what inspired us to be artists, what made us follow that magical brick road. I felt that way recently, as I know many of my friends have. Then a minor miracle pulled me back. I had grabbed an old book from my library. One I had not read in quite a while. I was a kid again, I knew these words, these words were engraved on my soul. Suddenly I was transported back in time to the first time I read it. The first time the words hit me. The first time I was inspired to BE a magician. There it was, that excited little flutter in my stomach... What were/are your magical inspirations? I have so many: the opening chapters to ‘Greater Magic’, Milbourne Christopher’s ‘The Illustrated History of Magic’, Max Holden’s ‘Programs of Famous Magicians’ and a old dusty tome I grabbed from my bookcase, a little known book by Will Dexter called ‘Everybody’s Book of Magic’. Unusual, as it wasn’t really a book of tricks, but a TOUR of the London magic scene in the 1950's Everybody’s Book of Magic is beautifully written in an intimate tone that not only makes you feel like the author is talking to YOU, that he understands YOU, and somehow he gets you just as excited about the mysterious world of magic and magicians as the tricks themselves. My favourite is chapter 7, where Will takes the reader on a journey into the top secret underground sanctum of ‘The Magic Circle’. The special entrance way, the rooms, the people we meet, the conversations we overhear... Heady stuff. This chapter alone stuck with me for the rest of my life. This chapter inspired me to BE a magician. THIS CHAPTER is the one I will perform for you on this episode of Magicians Only Let the words wash over you, many of the people mentioned became legends. I wish you all nothing but inspiration. Let’s re-light that fire. Summary In this episode of Magicians Only, host Steve Valentine explores the enchanting world of magic, reflecting on his personal journey and the profound impact of magic literature, particularly the works of Will Dexter. He shares insights into the Magic Circle, a secretive society for magicians, and emphasizes the importance of community and storytelling in the art of magic. The episode culminates in a heartfelt reading from Dexter's book, highlighting the magic of inspiration and the bonds formed within the magic community. Takeaways The podcast celebrates the world of magic in various ways. Magic on the Go offers immersive learning experiences. Teaching can lead to new insights and improvements. The Magic Circle embodies a blend of camaraderie and secrecy. Will Dexter's writings had a significant impact on Steve's view of magic. Magic literature can create a sense of belonging for aspiring magicians. The importance of community in the magic world is emphasized. Magic is not just about tricks, but about storytelling and connection. The Magic Circle serves as a hub for magicians to share and learn. Inspiration can come from revisiting childhood influences. Hey all. So as you may or may not know I spent the beginning of last year performing a new version of my one man show, Life and Other Deceptions, at a fantastic theatre in Pittsburgh called LIBERTY MAGIC. The more I worked with the staff there, the more wisdom I heard. Not being magicians themselves, I realized that their attitudes, criticisms and ideas relating to magic, magicians and one person shows were pure gold, and unfiltered by politics or dogma and needed to be heard. So, I sat down with their Venue manager, Zoe Ruth, for an in-depth, and brutally honest interview about her experiences in running and booking Liberty Magic, and it was eye opening. Listen to this with an open mind and heart, understand that all we want is for magic and magicians to move forward, not stagnate, and you will gain an incredible amount from the interview. The advice on creating a show, taking notes and being authentic is probably the most important thing you’ll hear all year. This is Part One, enjoy :) SHOW NOTES: Keywords magic, theater, Liberty Magic, one-person show, Zoe Ruth, performance, storytelling, magic tricks, entertainment, show production, magic, performance, emotional journey, originality, stock lines, audience engagement, show cohesion, classic tricks, reimagining magic, unique voice Summary In this episode of Magicians Only, the host introduces the concept of magic as an art form, highlighting the unique venue Liberty Magic in Pittsburgh. The conversation features an interview with Zoe Ruth, the venue manager, who shares insights on the challenges and creative processes involved in producing one-person magic shows. The discussion emphasizes the importance of storytelling and thematic coherence in creating engaging performances that resonate with audiences. In this conversation, the speakers delve into the art of magic performance, emphasizing the importance of emotional engagement, originality, and the crafting of a cohesive show. They discuss the significance of understanding the audience's emotional journey, the need for magicians to present unique material, and the pitfalls of relying on overdone tricks and stock lines. The dialogue encourages performers to find their unique voice and to reimagine classic effects in innovative ways, ultimately enhancing the overall impact of their magic shows. Takeaways Magic is not just about tricks; it's about storytelling. Liberty Magic elevates the art of magic through its unique format. Creating a 90-minute show requires a different approach than shorter acts. Zoe Ruth brings a theater perspective to magic performance. Thematic coherence is crucial for audience engagement. Magicians need to explore personal narratives in their shows. The venue fosters a community of magic lovers. Successful shows often blend narrative with magic tricks. The challenge of creating a full evening show is significant. Magic tricks should serve a purpose in the narrative. Magic is a tool, and you must ask yourself why you use it. The emotional journey of the audience is crucial in a magic show. Crafting a cohesive show involves setting a path for the audience. Originality in magic is essential to stand out. Reimagining classic tricks can breathe new life into performances. Avoid overdone effects to keep your act fresh and engaging. Stock lines can dilute a magician's unique voice. Finding your unique voice enhances the authenticity of your performance. It's important to rewrite and personalize material to fit your character.
