Federal Judge to Hold Hearing for Alleged Palisades Fire ArsonistJonathan Rinderknecht, 29, accused of starting the Palisades fire that killed 12 and caused over $50 billion in damage, has a federal court hearing today. The judge is expected to rule on what evidence will be admissible at his summer trial. He has pleaded not guilty. El Niño Summer May Supercharge Mosquitoes Carrying DenguePublic health officials warn that a warm winter and looming El Niño summer could supercharge mosquito populations in the Santa Monica Mountains. Invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carried locally transmitted dengue fever in Southern California for the first time last summer. Residents are urged to clear standing water. Schiff Says Trump's Iran War Threatens California BeachesU.S. Senator Adam Schiff toured offshore oil platforms in Ventura and Santa Barbara, warning that the Trump administration's pro-oil policies and war with Iran threaten California's coast. Schiff said the administration is paying a Morro Bay wind project to convert to oil and risks another catastrophic spill. He called the Iran attack illegal under U.S. law. California Voters May Be Asked to Repeal Jungle PrimaryDemocratic consultant Steven Maviglio has filed petitions to put repeal of California's top-two "jungle primary" on the 2028 ballot. The move follows concerns that five Democrats could split the vote and let two Republicans advance from this spring's gubernatorial primary. If approved, the change would first apply in 2030. Malibu Elementary's Word of the Year Is 'Vocabulary'Malibu Elementary School principal Sally Winnes told the Santa Monica-Malibu School Board that her campus is focused on building academic and domain-specific vocabulary across every subject. The Point Dume school has also replaced its failing 65-year-old water system, added new sewer lines, and installed a generator to end power outages.
