SPECIAL EPISODE: Steve Nevey
In this special episode we sit down with Steve Nevey, Executive Director of Washington State Ferries. After Steve joined a Chevron cadet program at 16 he went to sea on tankers and then cruise ships, and worked his way up at Holland America on a path that was supposed to end in a captain's chair and instead ended in an office in Seattle. He walks us through how he arrived at Washington State Ferries a year and a half into the pandemic, what he found when he got there, and the work of rebuilding the licensed deck workforce. We also get into the aging fleet, the three new hybrid-electric ferries now under construction for 2030, what riders misunderstand about how the system, and some of his most exciting days on the job.

In this special episode Sara & Patrick sit down to catch everyone up on what's been happening at the Marine Exchange! Patrick just returned from Helsinki, where he spoke at the 15th Annual World Congress of Oceans and toured Fintraffic, Finland's national vessel and cargo traffic command center. He shares what that trip means for PortLink, our new digital information platform, and what the vessel movement data is already starting to reveal. We also cover the 2026 Annual Meeting on September 24 and Patrick's upcoming role as incoming chair of the National Harbor Safety Committee Steering Team.

SPECIAL EPISODE: International Transport Workers' Federation
In this special episode we sit down with International Transport Workers' Federation staff Ryan Brazeau, ITF's West Coast Coordinator, and Dr. Asif Altaf, ITF's Global and Wellness Program Coordinator. They walk us through what a port call actually looks like for the crew — 29-day shore passes, Jones Act waivers, months at anchorage, the Strait of Hormuz — and the human cost underneath all of it. Thank you Ryan and Asif for discussing some hard topics openly with us and for the work you do for our seafarers around the world.
