The Tragic Tale of Captain Horace Howland LIVE
A song I wrote for Nancy's Great-great-great Grandfather, Captain Horace Howland who went down on his ship.
-
Cinnamon X
Nancy and I applied for a Reality Show called "Jingles." This was the first audition - make up a jingle for the fake cereal "Cinnamon X." They loved it and we got called in for the next audition in person. For that we improvised a jingle for them. They loved that, too!

SongGifter Spots
In 2006, Nancy Howland Walker and I offered original songs for gifts. People would fill out a questionairre and I would write and record the songs, with Nancy filling in harmonies. When I had a radio show on WCPT Chicago, we made advertising spots for this business in various song styles. Here…

Stupid Things People Say
Written for the show "Journey to the Center of the Uterus." I asked Kathleen for a list of the stupid things people say to her around fertility and had a lot of fun composing it in this song. Great backup vocals by Nancy Howland Walker.
-
No More
Written for "Journey to the Center of the Uterus." It didn't end up getting used. But it's a lovely statement about finding your strength in defeat.
-
Hoo-Ha Highway
This was written for Kathleen Puls-Andrade's one-woman show, "Journey to the Center of the Uterus" about her journey through the fertility fray while trying to get pregnant.
-
That's Just the Way It Is
This was an Anniversary song for my Cutie Pie. We began as friends, and our Love has grown and grown - we love each other more with each passing year. That's just the way it is with real love.
-
American Tune
This little ditty came to me in the 1990's and wouldn't go away. I could never put words to it but it lived as it was until I was searching for a theme to my radio show "Awakened America" which it fit perfectly.
-
Too Afraid To Answer
The archetypal choice that all of us face at one point or another. Ib this case the tragedy of letting oneself become a slave to fear. A choice too may suffer from.
-
Cold Light Of Day
This song was written as part of a one woman show entitled Journey To The Center of The Uterus. MOst of the songs were humorous except for this one which speaks of coming to terms and acceptance.
-
Texas Isn't Big Enough
Co-Written with Kenny Davis, a Texas Swing tune with a twist. Being two New York jewish boys, we were sick of hearing Texans boast (and this was before Bush) so we got the idea for the title. The rest came pretty easily except for the bridge which Kenny came up with and it knocked me out. It's...
-
One Man Rides Away
Have you ever heard Lorne Greene doing "Ringo"? This was my homage to that genre. It paints a pretty good picture and it's just fun. Yee Ha! This was written during my Marshall Dillon phase.
-
Leave It Unspoken
I am a big believer in an economy of words. To me the quieter you say something, the more powerful it is. Try looking into a beautiful womans eyes if you don't believe me. This song was built around that second chord in the verse progression. Other than that it's a standard country song.
-
Her Heart Is Made Of Flint
This one was just true. The image struck me as so true and the rest of the song wrote itself around that idea. This one features my Chet Atkins autographed Gibson that I hocked in a moment of despair and stupidity. Sorry Chet. I am very proud of the lyric on this one.
-
You Made Your Bed
Another one written with my pal Hodge Cook. See the song opens with a guy actually making a bed! Heh! Heh! Get It? For a Nashville tune it's actually pretty good.
-
Between Friends
Co-write with Donna Beck Michael, this pretty little ditty is a sweet tale about love that grows up unexpectedly and suddenly. Really love that has had a chance to mature in the soil of friendship is at once the scariest and the best.
-
Sweet Temptation
Some things are bad for you but you want them anyway. Some things you want so bad you can't say no when you should. Long story short, I should've resisted but I didn't. I got cavities.
-
Same Old Dog
Written with my friend J.T. Bear and recorded at his home studio in Nashville. I played bass and programmed the drums. The Guitarist is Dean Hall (son of Tom T.) who is a killer guitarist with tremendous feet. (His sneakers are my regular clown shoes which I wear on gigs) This song is a bit of…

Dear Heart
Written while recuperating from a heart attack and triple bypass surgery, you can see why I was looking for this.
-
In Their Eyes
(For Craig and Melody) Co-written with Hodge Cook, this one is for my babies who are now in their twenties and thrilled to be referred to as my babies.
-
Ghost Of A Chance
It's the week after the 2004 election. I spent 20 hours in the rain and cold at a polling place in Pittsburgh and witnessed first hand the underhanded tactics employed by the Cheater In Chief. I still can't believe that Son Of A Bitch stole another election but I was clear it would not have been...
-
Deeper Than This
This is a pretty little romantic sketch. I love the idea that the biggest things in our lives are symbolized by very little mundane things. Hence the images of ordinary run of the mill stuff that means so much more.
-
Love From A Stone
Another Hodge Cook Co-write. We were both going through seperation/divorce issues at this time, hence the "Go Away Liitle Girl" attitude. I also really wanted to see how far I could go with a non rhyming rhyme so I put it in the payoff line of the Chorus. I take odd pleasure in that. You don't...

He Turns The Page
Life goes by. It seems to speed up as you get older. I have found that it is best to live in the now. Most people don't do that and end up like the man in this song having nothing but pictures in the end. I co wrote this with a young lady named Lee. Unfortunately I don't remember her last name…

Looks Like I'm In...
Just Fun. I love those old balladeers and the songs of that era. This was an homage written with Hodge Cook. This was a chance to play with lyrics.
-
Window Box
This song, co-written with Hodge Cook, is one of my all time favorites. It's a word picture I wrote at a time when things were stinking pretty badly but there was a spark of hope and I wanted to write a song about that. The point is, winter is always followed by spring. I used to love singing…

If You're In Chains
I belonged to a wonderful race relations group in Nashville. I wrote this one for them. This is one of Nancy's favorites. I am very proud of the imagery of the burning tree.
-
It Aint Your Train
I was reading "A Return To Love" by Marianne Williamson and there was this great line in there; "If It didn't stop at the station, it wasn't your train." Well, I thought, not only is that a great philosophy but it has a train in it, hence, it could be a Country song. Unlike my 15 minute songs…

Aren't We Children
I sat in my home studio for three hours trying to write something and came up with nothing. Suddenly I looked up and said to G-d, "I haven't written one for you in a while. Would you like me to?" Ten Minutes later "Aren't We Children" was finished. I love this song and what it says. I also like…

All Roads Lead Home
Wherever you go, there you are. It doesn't matter what route you take, your own true nature is always the destination. What is your own true nature? Ask the Buddha. If he answers you, kill him.
-
Always
This is a beautiful song that expresses wonderfully my belief that love, once given, is eternal. Relationships change but the love has a life of its own that goes on no matter what we do. I realize that in my life I love all the people I have ever loved, even those who I hated for a time. The…

Can't Outsmart My Heart
I wrote this one with Corey Hite, who is also singing in the recording. I absolutely love her voice. I hope she's still out there somewhere singing the blues. That's a lot of soul for a blonde blue eyed Christian girl from Minnesota. That's also me on Bass and drum machine with Dean Hall (Tom T....
-
Miles and Miles Away
I wrote this one on a Greyhound Bus going back to Long Island after my first trip to Nashville. Can you tell I was reluctant to go home? This was recorded with Four In The Morning and was my first recording playing bass.
-
Sank Like A Stone
Co-written with Richard Bach with whom I had to fight for inclusion of the line, "Everything was double, so I was twice as alone." I just remember laughing a lot with Rich while writing this one. Performed by Four In The Morning.
-
Keep It Country
So how did a jewish boy from NYC end up in Nashville writing country music? Honest to G-d I don't know but I did play country music in the tri-state area for a spell. My two bands were Marshall Dillon and the Deputies (yes I worked under the name Marshall Dillon) and Four In The Morning (which is...
-
Sure As Sunrise
Maybe it's because I was a bass player but I have always loved the drop D tuning. This is one of my mellow drop D songs about romance and the certainty that no matter what happens to a relationship, the love is real.
-
When It Comes To My Baby
I have always secretly had the desire to be a lounge singer. Hodge and I co-wrote this one as an homage to crooners and balladeers of a bygone era. I love the feel of this one.
-
In A Single Tear
My first Co-write with Hodge Cook. Chuck Neese owns the publishing and paid for this demo. I just liked the idea of a tiny thing like a tear containing so much. Note the bridging of the word tear leading into the actual bridge. I fell in love with that device and it shows up in a few of my songs....
-
The Point Of No Returning
Written just after I left about my wife of thirteen years. As it turned out it was best for all involved (we are great friends now), but at the time I was concerned about whether I was going to regret it. Luckily, it turned out much better than the song. Sometimes leaving is the right thing but…

Guilty By Suspicion
Technically I was not guilty when I wrote this but in point of fact I was only technically innocent. Even so it turned out to be a good song and for those of you out there who really are being unjustly suspected I hope it helps. As of now I am one of you but at the time...oy! I was guilty in my...
