The #1 Thing That Will Cause Failure in Your MA School & What to Do About it
Making excuses is never a good thing. Not just in any martial arts, but it’s also bad for business, career, and personal relationships. On today’s episode of the Martial Arts Business Podcast, Gordon urges you to have a winner’s mindset and stop making excuses. You may be having some hard times, but you’re not the only one. Even successful people have challenges to face. They’ve made mistakes and had failures for sure. But, what differentiates these successful people from you? They do what’s need to be done and don’t make excuses. They acknowledged that it won’t be easy, they put time and energy and started exploring the possibilities. So, time to start listening to learn more from Gordon! KEY TAKEAWAYS You can’t make excuses. Everyone has challenges. Everyone is diverse. The ones who don’t take NO for an answer and the ones who find a way to have the attitude. “I’m not gonna create excuses, I’m gonna find solutions.” The hardest thing to do is look within. Look at yourself, be honest and truthful. Ask yourself: Why am I making excuses? Where am I creating barriers to success? Some people come from nothing but still manage to be successful. It’s because they don’t create excuses. It’s easier to point at others or the society in making excuses. Everyone experiences challenges, adversity and hardships. They are part of life. Ask yourself how to be better. If you do this, your true power is unleashed. Once you create an excuse, you cut off the ability to stop thinking about the possibility. Everything’s possible. People who create excuses stay exactly where they are. What do I need to get to the next level? Remember 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There’s no successful person in the world that has more time than you do. Ask: Where do I waste time? How can I create more space? How do I stop distractions? Have the winner’s mentality. There’s no Limit, It’s Yours
There is no limit!Too many people settle for second best, settle for mediocre and settle for average. I was one of these people too. I didn't believe in myself enough and I didn't believe it was possible. Discover how to break through these barriers and achieve anything you want in life. KEY TAKEAWAYS The only person in the way of achieving success with your business is yourself. You are your own limit. Our limits are created by the people around us, our surroundings and our experiences in life. It's not the reality though. If everyone lived their lives as they were born pure, you would go and achieve absolutely everything and anything because you have no barriers. We must always work on ourselves and our beliefs. Constantly working on our barriers. They're not real, they've been created. The only limit we impose is upon ourselves.Never settle for what you think you can achieve. Always go the extra mile. Always go further than you ever think you can. I absolutely believe that every single person is born with this genius to go out and change the world. It's the fears that hold us back. Don't ever believe that crap! It's not real. It's not your reality unless you make it your reality. Always be aiming for something in life. You have to keep growing every second. We feel alive when we grow, when we're moving towards something. If you sit still, you rot away. Always be moving forwards but don't be a busy fool. What are you projecting in your business, every day, every week, every month? Where's my projections, what can I see, where do I want to go? Without that, you have no path to success. Many people don't project their business. They don't know where they're going. Take the right actions. You've got to know what you're doing. It's so important that you know your purpose, what you're doing, why you're doing it and the action steps towards that. When you work harder on yourself and you become a better person, you'll attract better things into your life.I.e. better staff, better customers, better students, it's so important that people miss this, especially in the martial arts. It's always down to you! Once you accept that, it's one of the greatest powers in the world. We point the finger, blame the staff, blame the customers, blame the students. Blame the government and blame society. Look internally, it's the one thing you have control of. Analyse yourself and work harder on yourself than you do at your job. It's imperative that you do that, I'm always working on myself. It took a long time to get a person sitting in front of you here. "I'm going to do whatever it takes to succeed and I'm never going to quit until I get there." It's such a powerful formula and it's so easy. Think big and take action. Will what your doing today get you towards your goal? Know what you want, then go and get it. It's how we achieve things in life. Be accountable. Put your back against the wall. Then you have to do it. It now has to be done. You have no choice and that's a good thing. Do the things you want to do now. Don't end up regretting it years down the line. You're born for greatness. Be thankful for life and give thanks. You are your limit. You were born pure and magnificent. Go and achieve everything that you deserve in your business. BEST MOMENTS I used to get knocked down and feel inadequate when I was younger. No wonder that by the time I was in my mid-twenties, I had such a negative belief in myself. I didn't like who I was, how I sounded, I didn't like looking at myself. I didn't like anything about myself! It took me so long to believe that there's no limit to what you can achieve. I didn't believe I could win a world title and become the person I am today. It took years. Never settle for a No.Never settle for a Mediocre. You're more than that! The 3 B's: Be honest with yourself.Ask yourself honestly. How can I be better? What can I do differently? What do I need to work on? How could I have said it better? Always analyse yourself! Be kind to yourself. If you want to grow and move forwards, you've also got to be kind to yourself. Otherwise you'll stagnate in a hole of negativity. Be kind to yourself. Love yourself. Be happy with your faults. Be happy with what you have. Gratitude is so important. Be grateful for everyone that you've got. It'll help you stay on focus and stay on point. Most businesses can't just rely on word of mouth. Word of mouth is good if you have a great strategy. Video testimonials are the number one strategy. This way, you can really feel what the person's saying. You can see they're real. Lots of people struggle with videos. They won't struggle if they have a good incentive. Write down everyone in your dojo that you've helped in a certain or specific way. Write the names of everybody whose pain you've helped solve. You'll find there's loads of people, and most would be happy to share with a bit of a nudge and a bit of incentive. Video testimonials can be worth to your business £10k+.It can bring you thousands of students because people buy what other people say and recommend. Write down the specific pains you've helped for different people. You will find there is a wide variety. Set up a basic structure: Where were they? What was their pain? What was their journey like? Where are they now? Why would you recommend G-Force? Offer them something cool and think long-term. A video testimonial is like third-party verification and they're very powerful. It could be a hoody or a fifty-pound voucher. Once you've got it, you've got it. Use video testimonials as ads on Facebook.Show how other people overcame the same pain as your potential clients by using your services and products, it'll make them way more likely to convert. Repurpose the testimonial.Send the audio to a transcriber and they'll write the testimonial out in text for you. You can use that copy on Facebook as well, like a case study. Use it on your websites, in emails, it's so versatile. When people praise your services, think how you get that on video. Tell them you'll only use a video that they'll like, no pressure, nice and simple. Make it a strategy that you always ask for your customers' feedback. Ask them to write reviews. You could automate the system too by sending your clients written communications asking whether they're enjoying the class and if they'd write a review about it, send you an email or post on social media about it. BEST MOMENTS Knowledge is not power.Applied knowledge is magnificent. You can go places when you apply the knowledge you learn. Make it an essential part of your strategy to get all of your testimonials down on film.Use them as a massive part of your marketing campaign. Pre Framing essentials for your MA Schools
In this episode, martial arts expert Gordon Burcham discusses the importance of educating and pre-framing parents of martial arts students, to ensure the ‘pick up, put down’ mentality of children doesn’t hinder their development in the martial arts world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Kids Don’t Quit, Parents Give Up: With a wide variety of opportunities for children, why are adults getting lazy with their children? Parents make up excuses as to why they have to stop their children doing martial arts because of the ‘pick up and put down’ mentality that exist in parents minds when faced with the many opportunities available to their children. Martial arts is not a month or two, it’s a lifelong journey. It often takes years and years for a child to complete their journey through martial arts, however parents rarely know this at the start. Martial arts are so important for development and adults need educating on the longevity of martial arts to ensure their child has all the opportunity to excel. Gordon believes that martial arts are the number one activity for kids. Welcome Meetings: 5 or 10 minute welcome meetings pre-frame parents on martial arts when their child enrols. Many parents don’t understand the transformation process and it’s important to communicate with parents so they understand the journey. These meetings can be one-to-one sit down meetings or group meetings with multiple parents at the same time. It’s here you can educate and pre-frame these parents on the journey of martials arts. Never Quitting! So often children will attempt to negotiate their way out of a hobby, maybe after a few weeks or maybe after a few years. When a child first picks up martial arts, it’s going to be hot and they’re going to love it however, kids these days pick up and put down far too easily. Those that have gone through the journey know how important martial arts is and can explain how many children have gone through the ups and downs of the sport and are now black belt instructors and winners in life. Ethos: A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins! Pre-Framing: Constantly communicating with parents, seeing where they are on their journey in classes and one-on-one is a fantastic way of gaining retention from students. Re-affirm the importance of never quitting every few weeks and sticking at it. Children are young and positive reinforcement to keep the student engaged is very important. BEST MOMENTS The ‘Funny’ Stage:If you’re child is feeling disengaged with martial arts and suggesting they want to quit the sport during one of the low points on their journey, talk to Sensei and figure out how to inspire and get them back into the classes. When they’re low, we’ve got to dig them up and when they’re high we’ve got to keep pushing them up! Praise Your Children! Affirm to parents that they must praise their kids, big them up – don’t bring them down. Educate parents that isn’t not always a competition, it’s about the journey. As a martial arts school, it’s important we affirm (us as teachers and they as parents) in classes that we are there to help them on their own journey through martial arts. Conversation for Conversion
Rapport building and asking great questions. This is absolutely huge when converting prospects from an enquiry into an actual prospect and then into a join-up. This is a skillset that I've been nurturing, especially in the last two or three years. These skills shared today will enhance your conversions, help you with your staff, members and anyone who comes to your centre. KEY TAKEAWAYS Any business is essentially a relationship business. What you're doing is that people buy people, they're buying the relationship that they have and they buy from people they like. When people are scrolling through their social media accounts quickly and stop and take time on your advert, you're blessed. If they take the time to comment, then they've seen their pain in your advert and see the solution with you. Strike up great communications on feed and messages.Build rapport, use the seven points of contact. When you meet someone for the first time, there's always a barrier. When you ask open ended questions and get a conversion going, you start to relax and your shoulders drop. You open up more. If a customer asks you, "How much is it?" You can answer by saying "Thank you for your enquiry. For me to help you the most effectively, can I ask you, what interested you in this program?" This way you can get a conversation flowing and mirror their needs back to them and serve them better. How, Why, What, Where, When & Which. They're all you need. It's crazy, but that's all you need in your conversation. Avoid asking closed ended questions as you will receive short answers. If you have 3 different payment options, go through them."This is our leisure package, this one you can save £120 by paying for 6 months, then there's the premium package with everything included. Which package suits you best?" Listen to every single prospect, serve them and give them what they want, you'll convert those people. Ask people within your centre through a poll or survey what they want, you'll get a great retention rate too. BEST MOMENTS Rapport building is absolutely and massively important when you want to run a business. You must learn to ask questions and listen. The exchange of money for a product or service is to solve a pain in some way. People aren't good at martial arts if they don't need martial arts. People don't get a haircut if they don't need one, etc. VALUABLE RESOURCES Facebook Business Gordon’s Book Gordon’s Website ABOUT THE HOST Gordon Burcham has been training, teaching, and working in the Martial Arts industry for nearly twenty-five years.
