LBPD Guest Hour: Michael Twitty and Soul Food Month.
Michael W. Twitty is an acclaimed culinary historian, independent scholar, and living history interpreter specializing in African American foodways and the culinary traditions of Africa and its Diaspora. He is known for reconstructing historic Southern cuisine as prepared by enslaved African American cooks using period ingredients, cooking methods, and food traditions. Twitty founded Afroculinaria, one of the first major platforms dedicated to preserving historic Black food culture, and has worked with institutions including the Smithsonian, Colonial Williamsburg, Monticello, and Oxford University. His award-winning book, The Cooking Gene, earned two James Beard Awards, and he was named a TED Fellow in 2016. He joins us to discuss the importance of Soul Food in Maryland. LBPD Guest Hour: The Science of Reading
This episode explores the neuroscience of reading, unpacking how the brain learns to transform written symbols into meaningful language. We talk about why reading is a taught skill rather than an automatic one, and what brain research reveals about how children and adults develop reading networks over time. Dr. Donald (DJ) Bolger is an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland in the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology in the College of Education, where he directs the Laboratory for the Neurodevelopment of Reading and Language. He also co-directs the Maryland Initiative for Literacy and Equity, a joint institute with Morgan State University that bridges research and practice in literacy across PK-12 education and communities. For over 20 years, Dr. Bolger has studied reading and language achievement with typically developing children as well as neurodiverse learners and those with learning disabilities including dyslexia and autism spectrum disorder using behavioral and functional neuroimaging methods. His research also extends to the role of executive functioning and working memory in learning and the intersection of language and math development. Dr. Bolger has a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh’s Learning Research and Development Center.

LBPD Guest Hour: Stress with Dr. Briley
This episode features Dr. Josh Briley, a licensed clinical psychologist with more than twenty years of experience and a Fellow of the American Institute of Stress. Dr. Briley specializes in trauma-informed care, compassion fatigue, and stress management, and has trained first responders, health care professionals, and community groups across the country. His work with the Bureau of Prisons and the Veterans Health Administration provides deep insight into the mental health needs of men, and he is a strong advocate for men’s mental health. He also brings expertise in cranial electrotherapy stimulation and Integrated Behavioral Health, guiding providers and patients in innovative approaches to managing anxiety, insomnia, and pain.Stress remains a critical topic during the winter holidays. It is not a personal failure; it is a biological response that every person experiences. On Saturday, June 14th, at 10 AM, the Technology User Group(TUG) had two guest speakers. First was RebeccaRosenberg, an engineer, and the Founder and CEO of ReBokehVision Technologies, Inc. Creator of the ReBokeh See YourWorld app, she taled about its functionality and future plans.This app is designed for people with low vision, allowing them toenhance their visual experiences in real-time using theirsmartphone cameras. It offers customizable filters to adjustcontrast, color, brightness, and other visual elements, helpingusers see more clearly.Next, Michael Battista from HumanWare talked about the Prodigi software for Windows. The paid software features adjustable magnification, text-to-speech, and customizable contrast modes. The software is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly, allowing individuals to personalize their experiences.

Pro Bono Counseling® (PBC) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation founded with the goal of connecting uninsured and under-insured low-income Marylanders with compassionate and qualified mental health professionals who provide care on a volunteer basis at no cost. Roxanne Melgar, LCSW-C, serves as Interim Executive Director of Pro Bono Counseling, bringing over two decades of experience as a volunteer therapist with the organization. She currently guides the organization through its leadership transition while ensuring continuity of services. Previously, she worked as a program and clinical director at TurnAround and So Others Might Eat and plays a key role in PBC’s Terapias Initiative for Spanish speakers (Pro Bono Counseling Announces Interim Executive Director - Pro Bono Counseling).

LBPD TUG: Columbia Lighthouse and Maryland Accessible Telecommunications
First, the Columbia Lighthouse of Maryland will highlight programs available in those Maryland counties located near Washington, D.C. As part of this discussion, we will hear about updates to Columbia Lighthouse’s services that have occurred since their last presentation. Following Columbia Lighthouse, we will have a presentation by Diane DuCharm on the Maryland Accessible Telecommunications Program, covering free cell phones, complimentary equipment, and how to obtain these items. Furthermore, the Maryland Accessible Telecommunications Program has also undergone some modifications, which Diane will share with the group.

LBPD Guest Hour: Dr. Vicky Wong
February is Low Vision Awareness Month, and we've partnered with Dr. Vicky Wong to discuss the importance of low-vision tools and services. Dr. Vicky Wong is a highly accomplished optometrist at Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care. A graduate with distinction from Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry and a member of the Golden Key Honor Society, she completed an ocular disease residency at the Lexington VA Medical Center with a focus on low vision. Dr. Wong specializes in primary eye care, particularly myopia control and dry eye management, and is an active member of the American Optometric Association, contributing to the Vision Rehabilitation Section. She also serves as Chief Medical Officer of the Myopia Institute and writes patient education content for IntroWellness. In addition to her professional roles, Dr. Wong is President of the Maryland Optometric Association’s first all-female Board and a founding member of Young ODs of America. Outside of work, she enjoys food, volleyball, and time with her family, including her two children and Pomeranian Maddox.

The Commission's mission is to ensure opportunity for all by enforcing Maryland's laws against discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, and state contracts, providing educational outreach services related to these provisions, and promoting and improving civil rights in Maryland. Interviewed was Clevland Horton, Executive Director. Horton earned an associate's degree from the Community College of Baltimore County and a bachelor's degree and MBA from the University of Baltimore. He is a member of the Coalition Opposed to Violence and Extremism, serves on the Maryland Advisory Council on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and is committed to serving and protecting the rights of all Marylanders.
