Chemistry, Compatibility, and Connection Aren’t the Same Thing
That rush you feel when someone texts back fast, laughs at your jokes, and fires up your body can be real, and still not be real connection. In this episode, I continue my series on Loving Differently the Next Time Around. I make the distinction between chemistry, compatibility, and emotional connection, because getting them mixed up is one of the quickest ways to repeat the same relationship cycle after a breakup or divorce.I share a coaching story about “Troy,” a man who chased attraction for decades and left when the initial high faded. Only to repeat it again and again.I also take you through five ways to build real connection beyond the initial attraction and chemistry. If you’re dating after divorce, rebuilding confidence, or trying to stop confusing intensity with love, this is a roadmap to choosing differently. What Are You Really Looking For in Your Next Relationship?
After breakup or divorce, loneliness can make getting almost any attention feel like “the answer,” but that’s exactly how smart, good men end up repeating the same relationship patterns with a different person. I'm opening season six with a new series called Loving Differently the Next Time Around. In this episode, I slow things down by asking: what are you really looking for in your next relationship, and what are you hoping it will give you?I talk about the trap of dating to get relief after divorce or a breakup, and why preferences and attraction are real, but not all you need. I share a coaching story about “Sam,” who had a detailed list of what he wanted in a woman, yet couldn’t describe what he wanted the relationship itself to feel like. I offer a practical framework to help you get clarity in what you want in a relationship. I help you get clear about how you want to feel in your next relationship, get specific about what your relationship looks like in everyday life, and letting your values guide your choices. You’ll leave with a simple exercise you can do. The Confidence That Comes From Being an Emotionally Healthy Man
Confidence can look strong on the outside while you’re falling apart on the inside. In this episode, I talk about the kind of confidence that doesn’t need to announce itself, doesn’t depend on a relationship status, and doesn’t fall apart the moment you get rejected or life changes. That’s the confidence that comes from being an emotionally healthy man, and it’s the finale of my Living as an Emotionally Healthy Man series.I share a personal story from a time where I had every reason to doubt myself, and a decision that led me back into dating with a quieter, more grounded confidence, and ultimately into a marriage built on real connection rather than managing an image of myself. I share a coaching story about “Toby,” who comes in wanting dating tricks and leaves with something better: self-awareness, emotional availability, and the realization that confidence grows when you stop believing you have to impress someone to be worthy of love. You’ll also get practical steps on how you can create a deeper sense of confidence in yourself starting today. Emotionally Healthy Men Set Different Boundaries
In this episode, I talk about the real purpose of healthy boundaries and why they are not walls, threats, or rules for someone else. A boundary is taking ownership of your emotions: naming what you feel, what you need, what you are willing to do, and what you are not willing to do, so you can stay honest in relationship without losing yourself.I share about my early struggles with boundaries, and a story about a friend who had horrible boundaries in his relationships, and how he constantly tried to manage his partner’s moods so much that he gave up his plans, hobbies, and self-respect to keep the peace. You’ll get practical, clear language you can use right away, plus simple scripts for your every day preferences, time alone, and when conversations get heated so you can start to set boundaries differently. The Difference Between Reacting and Responding
The moment you feel criticized, dismissed, or disrespected, your body can go from zero to sixty before your mind knows what happened. That’s the difference between reacting and responding, and it’s one of the biggest skills emotionally healthy men build when they want better relationships after a breakup or divorce. I explain why a reaction is often automatic, defensive, and shaped by the past, while a response is still honest and direct but chosen on purpose. I share a story about a heated men’s workshop I attended, where two guys get triggered for totally different reasons and what they learned from it. I share my own story that demonstrates even if you react at first, you can still respond and repair afterward. I also revisit the PATH framework from the last episode with practical language you can use in real conflict to help you with responding instead of reacting, and how to repair if you do react. What Emotionally Healthy Men Do When They Get Triggered
Triggers happen. They don’t just suddenly stop showing up, but we can stop letting them run our relationships. In this episode, I talk about what a trigger really is, why your body can react before your mind can think, and how old experiences like abandonment, criticism, loss, or unpredictability can show up as defensiveness, shutdown, or anger in the present.I share my own journey of how childhood trauma shaped my reactions in relationships and why getting help changed everything. Then I tell "Keith's" story. His biggest trigger was being told what to do. When he finally connected the dots between his controlling mother and how he reacted in relationships, it made all the difference. From there, I offer the acronym PATH you can use today to help you when you get emotionally triggered... and you will be triggered. We ALL do! Why Emotionally Healthy Men Don't Need to Win Every Argument
The urge to “win” an argument can feel like strength, but it often leaves a relationship weaker. In this episode, I address a conflict pattern I’ve lived myself and I see it all the time in men who are rebuilding after breakup or divorce: the need to be right, get the last word, and prove a point, even when the cost is losing connection.I about why this happens, and share "Tarik's" story where his constant correcting seemed small, but to his partner landed as embarrassment and control, creating loneliness in the relationship. From there, I walk through the mindset shifts emotionally healthy men use to disagree differently. If you want better communication, deeper intimacy, and healthier relationships, check out the, Why Emotionally Healthy Men Don't Need to Win Every Argument episode. The Small Things Emotionally Healthy Men Do Differently
When most men think about changing themselves, they imagine making a huge breakthrough. A life-changing book. A powerful therapy session.A major realization. Those moments certainly matter. But after years of coaching—and doing my own inner work—I've learned something different. The men who create healthier relationships aren't usually doing extraordinary things. They're doing ordinary things...a little differently. In this week's episode of the Men on the Path to Love podcast, I introduce a brand-new series: Living as an Emotionally Healthy ManIn this episode, I share:Why emotional health shows up in ordinary moments—not extraordinary ones.My own journey through three divorces, therapy, and the deeper work that transformed my life. Why so many men give up on change too soon. The neuroscience behind why old patterns return—and why that doesn't mean you've failed. The small daily habits that create lasting change in your relationships. If you've ever wondered whether real change is actually possible... I hope this episode reminds you that it is. Not because change happens overnight. But because small, intentional choices—repeated consistently—have the power to change your life. Becoming a Safe Man
If you’ve ever thought, “I’m a good man. I provide. I don't hit or yell. So why does my partner still shut down around me?” this conversation goes straight to the uncomfortable answer: emotional safety is not the same as having good intentions. In this episode, I’m closing out my series on becoming the man capable of a healthy relationship by unpacking what it means to be a safe man in relationship. I talk about what emotional safety actually feels like from the other side, and how a man can be nonviolent and still be emotionally unsafe through defensiveness, control, interruption, or conflict avoidance. I share a personal wake up call from couples therapy that forced me to see myself more honestly, and a coaching story about “CJ” and “Nina” where one pattern changed everything. Then I offer a clear path forward using practical relationship tools you can start using to create emotional safety in your current or future relationships. The Relationship Skills Most Men Realize They Need After It’s Too Late
Most of us were taught how to provide, perform, and push through. Almost nobody taught us the relationship skills that keep love alive when things get tense. In this episode, I share the truth I learned the hard way: love is powerful, but love alone does not create a healthy relationship. Skills do. And if you don’t learn them, you could end up losing something you truly wanted to keep. You’ll hear the story of a man I’ll call Marcus, who comes to me focused on one goal: save his relationship. You'll hear how as Marcus practiced new relationship skills, something unexpected happened. I break down practical tools that help to build trust and deepen connection over time. The Emotional Habits That Quietly Destroy Relationships
Most relationships don’t fall apart from one explosive moment. They fade from the slow drip of emotional habits we repeat every day without noticing: getting defensive, shutting down, using anger as the only safe emotion, trying to be in control, and avoiding vulnerability. In this episode, I dig into the patterns that quietly erode trust, emotional safety, and real intimacy, especially for men who were never taught the emotional skills that healthy love requires.I share a story from my own path and a coaching story about “Marty,” a good man who wanted commitment but kept losing relationships fast. You'll hear how once he connected the dots of his emotional habits, and did the work, he could start building new relationship patterns that actually support love.I also ground this in research and give you clear examples you can recognize in your own life. I lay out a simple framework to move forward with awareness, curiosity instead of shame, and doing the work with practice and support. If you want better communication, deeper connection, and a healthier relationship after breakup or divorce, check out The Emotional Habits That Quietly Destroy Relationships, episode.Send us Fan MailSupport the showEmail: [email protected] Guide: 5 Steps to Understand Why Your Last Relationship Didn't WorkFree Guide: 7 Standards Every Man Needs Before Dating AgainWebsite: https://menonthepathtolove.com/Support The Show: Click HereFacebook: Bill SimpsonInstagram:@MenOnThePathtoLoveLinkedIn: Bill SimpsonSubstack: @billsimpson44

The Hidden Difference Between Attention, Validation, and Real Connection
Attention can look like affection, sound like commitment, and feel like chemistry, yet still leave you lonely. In this episode, I talk about the hidden difference between attention, validation, and real connection, especially for men rebuilding their lives and relationships after a breakup or divorce. If you’ve ever taken flirtation, or being “wanted” as proof that someone is emotionally available, this episode will help you see what’s really happening and why it matters.I share a personal turning point from my radio career, when constant attention from women forced me to ask a brutal question: were they attracted to me or to the image? I also introduce a client I call Chase, a guy who could “conquer” attention and hookups but kept falling into the same emptiness afterward, and what he did about it. Why Self-Awareness Is More Attractive Than Confidence
Confidence can get you noticed, but it can’t hold a relationship together on its own. There's something quieter and far more powerful: self-awareness. When you can honestly see your patterns, your blind spots, and the impact you have on other people, you stop chasing chemistry and start building emotional safety, trust, and lasting connection. In this episode, I share what kicked off my own self-awareness journey, and tell "Paul's" story, a confident, stylish “ladies’ man” who had no problem attracting women but couldn’t keep a relationship past a few months. The turning point wasn’t gaining more swag. It was learning self-awareness.You’ll also walk away with six practical ways you can start to build self-awareness in your dating life and relationships. The Version of You That Created Your Last Relationship Can’t Create Your Next One
In this week's episode, I start a new series for men rebuilding after breakup or divorce with one clear message: the version of you that created your last relationship can’t create your next one.I talk about why so many men were never taught the core relationship skills that actually sustain healthy love. This distinction is important. Because understanding what healthy relationships look like is one thing…Becoming the version of yourself capable of creating and sustaining one is another.I share something that changed my life after my third divorce. I also share the story of an old high school friend “Howard,” who reached out to me years later after multiple failed relationships and divorces, and how a deep conversation about what it really takes to create a healthier relationship, changed his trajectory on his path to love. I explore:Why old emotional patterns recreate old outcomesThe difference between intention and real transformationEmotional maturity and accountabilitySurvival mode vs intentional relationshipsWhy healing requires more than just wanting something differentCheck out The Version of You That Created Your Last Relationship Can’t Create Your Next One, episode.Send us Fan MailSupport the showEmail: [email protected] Guide: 5 Steps to Understand Why Your Last Relationship Didn't WorkFree Guide: 7 Standards Every Man Needs Before Dating AgainWebsite: https://menonthepathtolove.com/Support The Show: Click HereFacebook: Bill SimpsonInstagram:@MenOnThePathtoLoveLinkedIn: Bill SimpsonSubstack: @billsimpson44

Why Healthy Relationships Can Feel Uncomfortable at First
Calm can be the most confusing thing you feel after years of chaotic love. When you are used to butterflies, chasing, mixed signals, and emotional highs and lows, a healthy relationship can show up as discomfort instead of relief. In this episode, I’m closing out my series on building a healthy relationship with the part that surprises a lot of men: healthy relationships can feel unfamiliar before it feels safe.I share my own experience of meeting my wife and realizing that the absence of an emotional roller coaster didn’t mean something was missing. What showed up instead was peace, consistency, and the freedom to be myself without performing to stay connected. I also share “Nate's” story, a man who kept mistaking intensity for chemistry and left relationships once the early sexual intensity faded or conflict showed up. And how when he meets a grounded, kind woman, he called it “boring” until we name the real issueI offer some clear signs to look for to see if you may be in a healthy relationship even if it feels uncomfortable. What Men Were Taught About Strength That Hurts Relationships
You can be tough, capable, and respected and still feel lost when it comes to relationships. I’m talking about the gap between the version of “strength” we were taught growing up versus the kind of strength a healthy relationship actually needs. In this episode, I unpack the old rules many men inherit. I also share “Rico's” story, a strong man who knew exactly how to survive a tough life in prison but had a hard time being vulnerable with a partner, and how learning what true strength is changed everything. You’ll walk away with a clear picture of what strength looks like in real life. How to Handle Conflict Without Destroying Your Connection
Conflict doesn’t end most relationships, the way we handle it does. When a hard conversation turns into shutdown, defensiveness, or a fight to “win,” connection starts to erode even if the love is still there. In this episode, I talk about a healthier way to move through conflict without losing trust, safety, and intimacy.I share a personal pattern I lived for years: marathon talks that went in circles and left both of us drained. Then I tell the story of “Drew,” a client who was deeply triggered by trust wounds after being cheated on, and how his pain showed up as tone, accusation, and anger. And how once we named what was really happening... everything changed. You’ll also get practical relationship tools you can use right away to handle your conflicts in a way that actually builds connection instead of destroying it.Check out the How to Handle Conflict Without Destroying Your Connection, episode.Send us Fan MailSupport the showEmail: [email protected] Guide: 5 Steps to Understand Why Your Last Relationship Didn't WorkFree Guide: 7 Standards Every Man Needs Before Dating AgainWebsite: https://menonthepathtolove.com/Support The Show: Click HereFacebook: Bill SimpsonInstagram:@MenOnThePathtoLoveLinkedIn: Bill SimpsonSubstack: @billsimpson44

Emotional Safety: The Skill That Changes Everything
The fastest way to kill connection isn’t a lack of attraction or even a bad argument. It’s when your partner stops feeling emotionally safe with you. When that happens, they share less, ask for less, and slowly protect themselves, even if they still love you. In this episode, I break down the relationship skill that changed everything for me: emotional safety. You'll hear how creating emotional safety transformed me and those I work with. I share "Donovan's" story about how a fight over his driving turned into an analogy that was awake up call to create emotional safety in his marriageYou’ll get practical tools you can use today to help you create emotional safety in your relationships, and how asking your partner this question can reset everything: “Do you feel emotionally safe being honest with me?” Check out the Emotional Safety: The Skill That Changes Everything, episode.Send us Fan MailSupport the showEmail: [email protected] Guide: 5 Steps to Understand Why Your Last Relationship Didn't WorkFree Guide: 7 Standards Every Man Needs Before Dating AgainWebsite: https://menonthepathtolove.com/Support The Show: Click HereFacebook: Bill SimpsonInstagram:@MenOnThePathtoLoveLinkedIn: Bill SimpsonSubstack: @billsimpson44

How to Communicate Without Shutting Down or Blowing Up
The moment your partner gets upset, do you go quiet and shut down, or do you get loud, blow up, and go on the attack? That split second matters more than whatever you’re fighting about. In this episode, I unpack why so many men default to shutting down or blowing up when emotions get tense, and how those reactions quietly erode trust, intimacy, and emotional connection even when you care deeply about the relationship.I share my own experience of shutting down and "Kendre's" story of how he would blow up, and how you can choose to do neither one. The 5 Foundations of a Healthy Relationship (That Most Men Aren’t Taught)
You can be loyal, hardworking, and determined and still feel lost in relationships. If relationships haven't worked out for you, it may not be because you’re “bad at love” but because nobody ever taught you the foundations that make a relationship feel safe, steady, and connected. In this episode, I share the five core pillars I had to learn the hard way after years of trial and error, including three divorces. I walk you through each of these pillars: trust, open communication, mutual respect, commitment, and emotional and physical intimacy, using simple examples you can apply immediately. Why You Still Repeat Relationship Patterns—Even After Doing the Work
Your relationship patterns don’t come back because you “didn’t do the work.” They come back because the work gets real the moment your nervous system feels threatened and wants what's familiar. In this episode, I get into why awareness doesn’t always translate into new behavior, especially in emotionally charged and stressful situations. And, why you might default to fixing, shutting down, withdrawing, or defending yourself even when you genuinely want deeper love and connection. I share “Jason's" story, who after doing the work still fell into his pattern of trying to fix the problem instead of really hearing and feeling his partner. Once he understood the reason why we often repeat patterns even after having awareness, and what he could do about it, is when everything changed. You’ll also walk away with practical strategies for creating change where it counts and a powerful reminder that if a pattern keeps showing up, it may be trying to teach you something you haven’t fully seen yet. Most relationship advice tells men to communicate better, choose better, or “heal” so the next relationship finally works. In this episode, I'm going to take it a little deeper: What if the reason your last relationship didn’t work isn’t just about what happened between you and her or your partner…but about who you were being in the relationship? If you’re rebuilding after a breakup or divorce, this is the crossroads where learning turns into transformation. The Space Between Relationships: Where Real Growth Begins
One of the most dangerous lies men tell themselves after a breakup or divorce is to “move on” as fast as possible. I’ve coached enough men and lived enough of my own story to know this: when you skip the space between relationships, you don’t skip the pain, you just postpone it and usually repeat it.In this episode, I walk through why that in-between time is where real breakup or divorce recovery happens. Rebound or Rebuild? Why Rushing Into the Next Relationship Keeps Men Stuck
Chemistry after a breakup can feel like oxygen. It can also be the fastest way to repeat the same relationship pattern only with a new face. Why Breakups or Divorce Show Us Our Deepest Relationship Patterns
I'm starting a "mini-series" on this podcast about rebuilding after breakup or divorce. A breakup or divorce can feel like the end of your story, but it can also be the first moment you see what’s been running the script all along. In this episode, I talk about why breakups and divorce often expose the patterns we can’t see while we’re in the relationship dynamic, and how once you're out of that dynamic, clarity can become the turning point for real healing. I share my own experience rebuilding after multiple divorces and the relationship pattern I didn’t recognize for years. The Father Wound: How It Shapes Men in Relationships
What if the blueprint you learned from your dad is still running your love relationships? In this episode, I talk about attachment, and the often-hidden father wound, and why so many men become fixers, over-givers, or emotionally distant without realizing they’re reenacting old pain unconsciously handed down by their fathers. I share about my own father wound and how learning about my attachment style and taking action to heal, changed everything. I offer straight talk for men ready to feel safe in relationship without losing themselves, and for partners who want to understand the patterns beneath silence, over-functioning, or hot-and-cold behavior. Independent or Emotionally Distant? What Men Need to Understand
Have you (or someone you know) ever thought about how being independent shows strength because you didn't need anyone? And yet wondered why relationships didn't work out? In this episode, I explore the thin line between healthy self-reliance and quiet emotional distance, and then show how small, shifts can turn “I don't need anybody” into real intimacy without losing yourself. I share "Ted’s" journey—from escaping an abusive home as a teenager to excelling in the military and tech—and how being "independent" kept him from finding true intimacy and commitment in relationship. Strength or Checking Out: The Hidden Cost of Emotional Avoidance in Relationship
Emotional avoidance often looks like strength from the outside—calm voice, in control, not bothered, no drama. In this episode, I reveal why that steadiness can quietly turn into distance, how it sucks the life out of intimacy, and what it takes to show up in a way your partner can actually feel. I share the moment of honest feedback that made me aware that I wasn't emotionally available, and I share "Clifton’s" story from “I’m fine” to being emotionally present. I give you tools you can use today to expand your emotional vocabulary; catch the urge to run and stay five minutes longer; and listen without having to solve the problem. I challenge the old definition of strength and replace it with a new one—staying present under pressure without losing yourself.
