How an Active Duty Army Major Built an Award-Winning Bourbon Brand
Welcome to Season 2 Episode 18 of the “Militarily Speaking” podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi VickeryIn this episode of Militarily Speaking, we talk with Major Cole Hanna, co-founder of H.K. Young Bourbon Company, about building an award-winning Kentucky bourbon brand while continuing to serve on active duty. Cole shares how military leadership shaped his approach to entrepreneurship, why H.K. Young committed to toasted barrel finished bourbon, and what military members should know before starting a business of their own.“Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are.How an Active-Duty Army Major Built an Award-Winning Bourbon BrandMilitary service and entrepreneurship may look like very different careers, but Major Cole Hanna has found plenty of overlap between the two.Cole remains on active duty while also helping lead H.K. Young Bourbon Company, a Kentucky bourbon brand he co-founded with Tyler Young and Spencer Kalijan. The company has built its identity around toasted barrel finished bourbon and has already earned recognition from major spirits competitions. For Cole, the journey from military officer to entrepreneur has required many of the same skills he uses in uniform: strategic thinking, communication, risk management, discipline and knowing how to build the right team. From Bourbon Hobby to H.K. Young Bourbon CompanyCole’s interest in bourbon began after he was stationed at Fort Campbell. Living near Kentucky introduced him to the bourbon industry, but it was the community surrounding it that really captured his interest. That eventually led him to start the Clarksville Bourbon Society, which grew from a group of bourbon enthusiasts into a nonprofit organization with thousands of members. Over time, Cole began thinking about turning his interest in bourbon into a business.Finding a Niche in a Crowded Bourbon IndustryCole and his partners knew they were entering an increasingly crowded bourbon market.Instead of trying to launch another brand that looked like everything already on store shelves, they wanted H.K. Young to have a clear identity. They found it in toasted barrel finishing.H.K. Young works with bourbon sourced from respected Kentucky producers including Bardstown Bourbon Company and Green River before using proprietary blending and finishing methods to develop its products. The company describes itself as the toasted barrel finish bourbon company. That focus has helped create a recognizable position for the brand while giving the founders room to continue developing different products within the same overall identity. The company is trying to build something that can remain relevant five, 10 or 15 years from now.Building a Brand Takes More Than a Great ProductH.K. Young has expanded into multiple states and can also ship to many customers through online sales, but every new market brings new regulations, distribution relationships and sales challenges.Cole says entrepreneurs sometimes assume that getting picked up by a distributor means the hard part is over. A product still must move through the distributor, onto retail shelves and ultimately into a customer’s hands. That requires consistent work in the market.H.K. Young uses social media, online influencers, retail displays, awards and other marketing efforts, but Cole says nothing completely replaces having people physically in stores, talking with retailers and allowing customers to experience the product. For entrepreneurs, the broader lesson is simple: launching the business is not the finish line. You still have to earn the customer.Military Skills Can Translate Into Business LeadershipCole’s military career has taken him through several different roles, including becoming a Foreign Area Officer and studying Russian through the Defense Language Institute. He currently serves with U.S. Army Europe and Africa, working in a role that requires strategic communication and interaction with senior military leaders and international partners. Many of those experiences have influenced the way he approaches H.K. Young. Risk management is one example. Military leaders constantly have to assess risk, reduce what they can and make decisions despite uncertainty. Entrepreneurs face many of the same challenges. Cole also points to communication, discipline, strategic thinking and work ethic as skills that translate well into business.Military experience can also teach another valuable lesson: you do not have to personally know everything. Sometimes success comes from knowing who to call.Build Your Entrepreneurial Network and Find a MentorFor service members thinking about starting a business, Cole’s strongest advice is to build a network. His own business benefited from several years of relationships within the bourbon industry before H.K. Young ever launched. That network gave him access to people who understood different parts of the business. Military members may already have a larger network than they realize after years of assignments, units and professional relationships.Experienced entrepreneurs can often identify problems before they become expensive mistakes.Do Your Market Research Before You CommitCole encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to study the market before launching. That market research helped H.K. Young recognize an opportunity around toasted barrel finishing.Rather than trying to compete with every bourbon brand in every category, the company built a more focused identity. For military members transitioning into entrepreneurship, that same discipline can help determine whether an idea is simply interesting or whether it has a realistic place in the market. The Right Team Can Balance Your WeaknessesH.K. Young is led by three founders with different strengths. Cole describes himself as having a relatively high tolerance for risk. Spencer, who handles much of the company’s financial side, has a lower risk tolerance. Tyler has taken on much of the work surrounding the company’s plans to establish a physical location in downtown Hopkinsville, Kentucky.Their different skills allow each founder to focus on the areas where they can contribute the most. Building a strong team does not mean surrounding yourself with people who think exactly like you. Sometimes the best team is made up of people whose strengths compensate for each other’s weaknesses.Staying Connected to Hopkinsville and the CommunityH.K. Young’s connection to Hopkinsville is built into its identity. The company’s logo features three tobacco leaves representing its three founders while also referencing Hopkinsville’s history as part of Kentucky’s Black Patch tobacco region. The team is also working toward opening a physical H.K. Young location in downtown Hopkinsville. That local connection reflects the same community-minded approach Cole developed through the Clarksville Bourbon Society.Giving back has remained important throughout his military entrepreneurial journey. Cole sees supporting the community less as a business strategy and more as something people should simply do when they have the ability to help.Newest Release for H.K. Young: Extinct SpiritsHe and his team are developing a company called Extinct Spirits, which combines spirits releases with original artwork featuring extinct animals. The concept is designed around storytelling while also giving back, with a portion of sales intended to support wildlife restoration and conservation efforts.Cole says the team is targeting a September launch. The project gives him another way to combine entrepreneurship with the philanthropic mindset that has been part of his bourbon journey from the beginning.Balancing Active Duty and EntrepreneurshipRunning a growing business would be demanding enough on its own. Cole does it while remaining on active duty overseas. The time difference can occasionally work in his favor. By the time colleagues and business partners in the United States start their workday, he has already completed much of his military day. Then the H.K. Young work begins. Cole says evenings can be spent on calls, emails and business decisions until it is finally time to sleep. Beyond that, there is not much about military entrepreneurship that resembles a predictable 9-to-5 schedule.A Special Offer for Militarily Speaking ListenersDuring the episode, Cole offered Militarily Speaking listeners 25% off through H.K. Young Bourb...

The Free College Resource Every Veteran Should Know About
Welcome to Season 2 Episode 17 of the “Militarily Speaking” podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi VickeryIn this episode of Militarily Speaking, we talk with Sydney Mathis, CEO of Service to School, about helping active-duty service members and veterans turn their military experience and education benefits into meaningful college opportunities. They discuss Service to School’s free college admissions support, VetLink partner schools, veteran-to-veteran mentorship and how military students can find the right path from service to higher education.“Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are.The Free College Resource Every Veteran Should Know AboutTransitioning from military service can create an unfamiliar question: What comes next? For many veterans and active-duty service members, higher education is part of the answer. The GI Bill and other military education benefits can make college financially possible, but choosing the right school, navigating an admissions process designed largely for traditional students and translating years of military experience into an application can still be difficult. That is where Service to School comes in.Led by CEO Sydney Mathis, Service to School is a national nonprofit that helps active-duty service members and veterans pursue undergraduate and graduate education. Its support can begin long before a service member leaves active duty and continue through the application process and into college. The goal is not simply helping veterans get into a school. It is helping them understand what educational opportunities are available, identify schools that fit their goals and use the benefits they earned through military service in a way that can create long-term opportunity. What Is Service to School?Service to School has spent approximately 15 years helping veterans and service members pursue higher education. The organization originally began with MBA students helping military officers apply to business school. As its founders became more familiar with the military education landscape, they saw an even larger opportunity to assist enlisted service members pursuing undergraduate degrees.Today, Service to School supports both undergraduate and graduate students.Service members can connect with the organization while still on active duty, as they prepare for a military transition or after becoming a veteran. That support can include guidance on selecting schools, navigating college admissions, developing application materials and connecting with mentors who have already made a similar journey. Most importantly for prospective students, Service to School provides its services at no cost. For Mathis, the mission is simple: veterans should have access to the educational opportunities they earned through their service.VetLink Helps Veterans See New College PossibilitiesOne of Service to School’s most prominent undergraduate programs is VetLink. The program connects enlisted service members and veterans with colleges and universities that have demonstrated both strong academic outcomes and a commitment to supporting student veterans.Partner institutions include widely recognized universities such as Stanford, MIT, Harvard and Princeton, along with schools including Amherst, Williams, Wesleyan and Villanova. For some veterans, these may be schools they never imagined attending.Military service, however, can give applicants qualities colleges value. Leadership, maturity, teamwork, problem solving, discipline and significant life experience can distinguish student veterans from traditional applicants.VetLink helps veterans recognize those strengths and understand that highly competitive colleges may be realistic possibilities. The program also focuses on outcomes. Undergraduate VetLink partners must have at least a 70% six-year graduation rate. Mathis notes that only about 23% of GI Bill beneficiaries attend institutions with graduation rates above that threshold. For Service to School, helping veterans access higher education means thinking beyond admission. The organization wants military students attending schools where they have strong opportunities to graduate, build professional networks and prepare for their next career.Veteran-Friendly Colleges Need More Than a LabelGetting veterans onto a campus is only part of creating a successful student veteran experience.Service to School looks for VetLink partners that demonstrate a meaningful commitment to military students. Partner schools participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program and are expected to provide resources that help veterans succeed after enrollment. Those resources may look different from campus to campus. Some universities provide dedicated veteran centers. Others offer year-round housing, an important benefit for veterans and military families who may not have another home to return to when traditional campus housing closes during school breaks.Other institutions offer veteran-specific research opportunities, financial aid or programs such as fully funded study abroad experiences. The common factor is a willingness to go beyond simply saying veterans are welcome.By working directly with colleges, Service to School can also help institutions recognize policies that unintentionally create barriers for military students.College Admissions Were Not Designed Around Military LifeA traditional college applicant may move directly from high school into higher education. Their school counselor is readily available, their academic history is recent and the application process is designed around their experiences.A veteran may be applying under completely different circumstances. They may have graduated from high school years earlier. Their former counselor may no longer work there. They may have attended multiple colleges, accumulated military education credits, completed specialized training, deployed overseas and changed jobs or duty stations several times.Yet the same college application is often used for both students. That can leave veterans trying to fit years of military service into forms that were never designed around their experiences.Service to School works not only with veterans, but with higher education professionals to address those challenges. The organization helps admissions offices better understand military backgrounds, enlisted and officer experiences, military education credits and the wide variety of occupations that exist within the Armed Forces. That knowledge can help colleges remove unnecessary barriers while giving admissions teams a more complete understanding of what veteran applicants bring to campus.Veteran Mentorship Creates an Educational Battle BuddyProfessional college advising is one part of Service to School’s approach. Veteran-to-veteran mentorship is another.Service to School has more than 800 volunteer ambassadors, many of whom previously received support from the organization and now want to help the next generation of student veterans. These mentors can provide something that even an experienced admissions counselor cannot: firsthand perspective.A veteran who has already transitioned from military service into college understands many of the questions a new applicant may be asking. Am I really qualified for this school? Will I fit in with traditional college students? How do I explain my military experience? What if I have been out of the classroom for years?Mentors have confronted many of those same uncertainties.Mathis describes Service to School’s model as a three-pronged approach involving the student, a veteran mentor and a professional college advisor. The mentor can provide encouragement and firsthand experience, while the advisor contributes technical knowledge of admissions and the application process.Jodi compares the role to an educational battle buddy – someone who has been there before and can help a veteran navigate unfamiliar territory.Turn Military Experience Into an Admissions StrengthMilitary experience can be one of a veteran’s greatest strengths as an applicant, but only if an admissions officer understands it.Military acronyms, occupational specialties and job descriptions may make perfect sense within a unit while meaning very little to someone in a college admissions office. To help bridge that gap, Service to School developed the VetLink Addendum for undergraduate applicants.Mathis describes the tool as essentially a “demilitarized resume.”Veterans can use it to explain jobs, deployments, <a href="https://www.afbank.com/learn/media/podcast/militarily-speaking-pcs-survival-guide-episode-1-pcs-

This Military Spouse Marketplace Will Change How You Shop Small
Welcome to Season 2 Episode 16 of the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery In this episode of Militarily Speaking, we talk with Monica Fullerton, Founder & CEO of Spouse-ly, about building her online marketplace connecting shoppers with military spouse, service member, veteran, and first responder-owned businesses. They dive into how she aims to support military spouse-owned businesses and create income-generating opportunities that can move with military families. “Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. This Military Spouse Marketplace Will Change How You Shop Small Military spouses are often required to adapt quickly. A new duty station can mean finding a new home, rebuilding a local support system and restarting a career – all while supporting a service member and managing the needs of a family. For military spouse entrepreneurs, those moves can also disrupt customer relationships, professional networks and opportunities for growth. A business that depends heavily on one location may become difficult to maintain after the next Permanent Change of Station, or PCS, move. Monica Fullerton founded Spouse-ly to give military-connected entrepreneurs a more portable path forward. Her message for aspiring entrepreneurs is straightforward: There may never be a perfect time to begin. Progress starts when you take the first step. What Is Spouse-ly? Spouse-ly is an online marketplace featuring products and services from verified military-connected and first responder entrepreneurs. Fullerton describes the platform as a combination of an online handmade marketplace and a service-provider directory, but with a mission-driven focus. The platform includes businesses owned by military spouses, veterans, active-duty service members, Gold Star family members, or first responders. Customers can use the platform to shop small while knowing their purchases directly support military and first responder families. That mission is especially important within the military community, where frequent moves can make traditional business development difficult. Spouse-ly gives entrepreneurs a digital storefront that is not tied to one installation, city or state. When a military family receives new PCS orders, the business can continue serving customers online instead of rebuilding from the beginning at every duty station. Military Spouse Entrepreneurship Can Create Career Portability Military spouse employment challenges are not always caused by a lack of skill, education or ambition. In many cases, the difficulty comes from trying to maintain a career through repeated relocations. A military spouse may build professional momentum at one duty station, only to face another move a few years later. State licensing rules, limited local job markets, childcare needs and gaps in employment can all make traditional career paths harder to sustain. Entrepreneurship can provide another option. A portable business may allow a military spouse to continue working after a PCS move, allowing them to continue to build income without depending on the local job market. It also allows them to maintain customer relationships across duty stations, and create a schedule that works around deployments and family responsibilities. With this business model, military spouses can turn professional skills or creative interests into a source of income, while building a long-term professional identity despite frequent relocation. That does not mean entrepreneurship is easy. Starting a business requires planning, time and persistence. It may also require families to think differently about budgeting, savings and financial risk. Still, for many spouses, the opportunity to build a small business that can move with them is powerful. Spouse-ly Was Built from a Military Spouse’s Experience Monica’s motivation for launching Spouse-ly came partly from her own career journey. She had earned undergraduate and graduate degrees and envisioned a communications-focused career. After becoming a military spouse, however, she realized that the traditional career path she had imagined did not always fit the realities of military life. Rather than abandoning the interests and skills she had developed, she looked for a new way to use them. That experience became part of the foundation for Spouse-ly. The business allowed her to combine communications, marketing, e-commerce, partnership development and community building with a mission of helping other military-connected entrepreneurs succeed. Her story reflects an important lesson for military spouses: a career may change shape without losing its purpose. Skills developed in one field can often be transferred into another opportunity. A background in education, design, marketing, healthcare, consulting or administration may become the foundation for a portable business – even when the final result looks different from the original plan. Start with a Strong Business Foundation During the episode, Monica emphasizes that entrepreneurs should not rush past the early planning phase. A strong idea matters, but an idea alone is not a complete business strategy. Before investing heavily in products, branding or advertising, aspiring business owners should understand the market they intend to serve. Monica encourages new entrepreneurs to conduct market research, understand their purpose and build structure around the idea. The strategy may change as the business develops, but taking the time to establish a strong foundation can make future growth easier. This approach also supports military financial readiness. A new business can affect the household budget, particularly during the startup stage. Military families should understand what they can reasonably invest without undermining emergency savings or other financial priorities. Build a Small Business Around Authenticity She chose to share the process of building Spouse-ly rather than presenting only the polished final product. By inviting people into the story, she created a network of supporters who understood both the mission and the people behind it. That community became one of Spouse-ly’s greatest assets. Small businesses may not have the advertising budgets of large corporations, but they can still compete through personal connection, trust and a clear sense of purpose. Customers are often drawn to businesses because they believe in the founder, understand the mission or feel connected to the story behind the product. For military spouse entrepreneurs, their experiences can become part of that story. Adaptability, resilience, community involvement and the ability to rebuild after a PCS move are not weaknesses. They can help shape a brand customers find relatable and meaningful. Community Can Be a Business Advantage Spouse-ly is more than a website where vendors list products. Monica describes it as a community of entrepreneurs who support and champion one another. That community can help business owners overcome one of the most difficult parts of entrepreneurship: trying to figure everything out alone. Through a strong network, entrepreneurs may find advice from people at a similar stage, referrals and collaborative opportunities. This can help their business with everything from marketing support, to simple encouragement during slow periods. The network also connects people giving them access to mentors and strategic partners, and giving them greater visibility among mission-driven customers. The platform also helps connect military-connected businesses with corporate partners that want to support military spouse entrepreneurship. Those partnerships can fund new initiatives and expand opportunities for vendors while allowing Spouse-ly to keep its community fees relatively limited. For consumers, the model provides a simple way to support the military community. Instead of viewing a purchase as only a transaction, shoppers can choose a product or serv...

The #1 Reason Veterans Fall Through the Cracks With America's Warrior Partnership
Welcome to Season 2 Episode 15 of the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery In this episode of Militarily Speaking, we talk with Jim Lorraine, President and CEO of America’s Warrior Partnership (AWP), about how AWP partners with communities nationwide to improve veterans’ quality of life so suicide is not an option. Jim shares AWP’s origins, including early success reducing homeless veterans in the Augusta area from 159 to 7, and explains how AWP bridges local and national resources through relationship-based support, advocacy, and careful partner vetting. He discusses Operation Deep Dive with Duke University focused on deaths of despair, the Corporate Veteran Initiative for workplace outreach, and the “Know a Vet, Tell a Vet” QR program. The conversation covers outcomes tracking, hope-scale measurement, financial insecurity as a major driver, and AWP’s annual symposium. “Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are.The #1 Reason Veterans Fall Through the Cracks With America's Warrior PartnershipAfter serving 22 years in the Air Force and helping establish the U.S. Special Operations Command Care Coalition, Jim Lorraine recognized a recurring problem throughout the veteran community. There wasn't a shortage of organizations. There was a shortage of coordination.Communities often knew exactly which veterans needed help but lacked the specialized resources to assist them. National nonprofits had extensive programs but frequently struggled to identify the veterans who needed those services most. America's Warrior Partnership bridges that gap.Rather than duplicating existing programs, AWP partners with thousands of organizations across the country to connect veterans with housing assistance, employment services, healthcare, education, legal support, emergency assistance, and more. Once a veteran reaches out, AWP helps determine the root cause of their challenge and stays alongside them until they're connected with the right solution. It's a model built around one simple philosophy: Together, we can do better.Military Financial Readiness Is About More Than MoneyOne of the most eye-opening moments from the conversation centered around a surprising statistic. According to Jim, nearly 86% of veterans who screened positive for suicide risk were primarily facing financial insecurity, not mental health challenges alone.Financial stress often becomes the catalyst that impacts every other area of life:Missed mortgage or rent paymentsVehicle repairs that prevent someone from getting to workMedical expensesDifficulty navigating VA benefitsLoss of employmentMounting debtThis highlights why military financial readiness isn't simply about budgeting. It's about ensuring military families understand the benefits they've earned, know where to find help, and have trusted organizations available before financial problems become overwhelming. For service members preparing to leave the military, financial education should begin long before transition.Knowing about different services available to veterans can dramatically improve long-term financial stability. Organizations like Armed Forces Bank continue to emphasize military financial education because proactive planning often prevents future financial crises.Helping Veterans Navigate a Complex SystemOne challenge discussed throughout the episode is that many veterans simply don't know what's available to them. Some never enroll in VA healthcare. Others never apply for disability benefits. Some don't realize they qualify for education benefits years after leaving active duty.Jim shared multiple stories of veterans who unknowingly missed out on benefits that could have dramatically improved their lives simply because no one explained the process in a way they understood. That's why trusted veteran support organizations remain so important.Instead of expecting veterans to figure everything out themselves, organizations like America's Warrior Partnership walk alongside them, helping them navigate:Veteran benefitsEmployment opportunitiesHousing assistanceHealthcare enrollmentFinancial resourcesEducation benefitsCommunity servicesThe goal isn't simply solving today's problem. It's building long-term stability. Why Collaboration Produces Better ResultsOne of the biggest themes throughout the episode was collaboration. America's Warrior Partnership intentionally avoids trying to become everything to everyone. Instead, they focus on relationships. If another nonprofit specializes in employment, AWP connects veterans there. If an organization provides housing assistance, that's where the referral goes. If financial counseling is needed, veterans are connected with experts equipped to help. This collaborative approach reduces duplicated services while ensuring veterans receive specialized support from organizations that excel in their particular area. Rather than competing for attention, successful veteran organizations strengthen one another.Operation Deep Dive: Using Data to Save LivesOne of America's Warrior Partnership's most innovative initiatives is Operation Deep Dive. Developed in partnership with Duke University, the project analyzes years of military service records alongside state mortality data to better understand deaths of despair among veterans.Instead of relying solely on traditional suicide statistics, the research examines broader patterns, including:Overdose deathsSubstance abuseGeographic trendsMilitary occupationsService historyDemographic informationThe goal is simple: Identify veterans who may be at higher risk before tragedy occurs.Rather than applying one nationwide strategy, Operation Deep Dive helps communities develop targeted outreach based on local needs. It's another example of how data can improve outcomes while helping organizations better serve veterans and military families.Quality of Life Is the Real GoalThroughout the interview, Jim repeatedly emphasized that America's Warrior Partnership doesn't view itself as a suicide prevention organization. Instead, it focuses on improving quality of life. When veterans have stable housing, meaningful employment, access to healthcare, financial security, transportation, and supportive relationships, the likelihood of crisis decreases significantly. This holistic approach recognizes that every veteran's circumstances are different. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Helping one veteran may involve emergency financial assistance, helping another might involve VA enrollment, while someone else may simply need transportation to get back to work. Success comes from understanding each individual's story. How Military Families Can Prepare Before Problems AriseWhether you're still serving or already transitioning into civilian life, taking advantage of available resources early can make an enormous difference. Some proactive steps include:Learn about your VA healthcare eligibility before separation.Review your life insurance and retirement options.Understand your GI Bill benefits.Build an emergency savings fund.Maintain relationships within the military community.Partner with trusted financial institutions that understand military life.Reach out to veteran support organizations before small problems become major ones.Organizations like America's Warrior Partnership and Armed Forces Bank share a common goal: helping military families build stronger financial futures while ensuring veterans know they don't have to navigate life's challenges alone.Transitioning from military service isn't a single event – it's an ongoing journey. The good news is that veterans don't have to walk that journey by themselves. As Jim Lorraine explains, the strongest veteran support systems aren't built by one organization doing everything. They're built by communities working together, connecting veterans with the right people, the right resources, and the right opportunities at the right time.Whether you're looking for veteran fin...

The Organization Quietly Solving One of America's Biggest Veteran Housing Problems – Purple Heart Homes
Welcome to Season 2 Episode 14 of the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery In this episode of Militarily Speaking, we sit down with Paul Cockerham, Business Development Director for Purple Heart Homes, to discuss how their organization is transforming the lives of veterans through accessible housing, home repairs, and community support. For many veterans, coming home doesn't always mean returning to a home that meets their needs.Whether it's recovering from combat injuries, aging with service-connected disabilities, or facing financial hardships that make critical home repairs impossible, thousands of veterans across the country struggle to live safely and independently in their own homes. “Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. The Organization Quietly Solving One of America's Biggest Veteran Housing Problems – Purple Heart Homes Purple Heart Homes was born from one veteran helping another. After serving together during Operation Desert Storm, National Guard soldiers John Gallina and Dale Beatty experienced a life-changing event years later when both were severely injured during a route clearance mission in Iraq. Dale lost both of his legs, while John sustained traumatic brain and back injuries. When Dale returned home, his house simply wasn't built for someone with his new physical challenges. John, who worked as a custom home builder, rallied volunteers throughout his community to build his friend a fully accessible home. That single act of service inspired what would become Purple Heart Homes. Nearly two decades later, the organization continues honoring that same commitment by ensuring veterans have safe, accessible places to call home. Helping Veterans Stay Safe at Home Purple Heart Homes focuses on helping veterans remain independent by addressing housing challenges before they become crises. Their Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) program provides assistance for veterans who own their homes but can no longer safely live in them because of accessibility or maintenance issues. Projects may include: · Wheelchair ramps· ADA-compliant bathrooms· Wider doorways· Foundation repairs· Roof replacement· HVAC repairs· Other critical home repairs For many veterans, these improvements mean the difference between remaining at home or losing their independence. More Than Home Repairs for Veterans Purple Heart Homes also provides innovative housing solutions through its modular home program. Built in their manufacturing facility in North Carolina, these homes can provide permanent housing for veterans who own land or support other veteran-serving organizations that need on-site housing for their programs. Another unique initiative is the Veteran Home Opportunity Program (VHOP). Through donated homes from banks and private donors, Purple Heart Homes renovates properties to meet veterans' accessibility needs before making them available at significantly below market value. Veterans begin homeownership with substantial equity already built into the property, creating long-term financial stability. The National Mission of Purple Heart Homes What began with one accessible home has grown into a nationwide organization. Today, Purple Heart Homes: · Operates chapters across the United States and Puerto Rico· Completes more than 200 projects annually· Has completed more than 700 housing projects· Has served more than 4,000 veterans· Has positively impacted over 8,500 veterans, family members, and caregivers The organization's local chapters help ensure veterans continue receiving support long after construction crews leave. As Paul explains during the episode, the goal isn't simply completing a project – it's welcoming veterans into the Purple Heart Homes family. Housing Is the Foundation for Everything Else One of the most powerful discussions in this episode centers around the idea that safe housing serves as the foundation for every other type of support a veteran may need. Medical care. Mental health counseling. Financial counseling. Employment assistance. Community engagement. All of these become significantly more effective when veterans have a stable, accessible home where they can recover, recharge, and build their future. Paul describes housing as the "hub," with every other veteran service becoming a spoke extending outward. It's a simple concept with profound implications. Changing Lives One Veteran at a Time Purple Heart Homes met a Vietnam veteran who had quietly lived in an uninsulated storage shed for more than 20 years. Despite losing a limb, he had adapted to living without running water, heating, or air conditioning. After months of building trust, the organization convinced him to accept one of their modular homes. When he turned on the faucet for the first time, he paused and simply listened. "I haven't heard running water where I live in 22 years." Moments like these remind us that restoring dignity often begins with something many of us take for granted. Advocating for Veterans Beyond Housing Purple Heart Homes doesn't only build homes – they also advocate for better policies affecting veterans nationwide. The organization played a leading role in supporting federal legislation that corrected an issue preventing many disabled veterans from qualifying for certain housing assistance programs because of outdated income calculations. The change opened access to housing resources for thousands of veterans who previously fell through the cracks. It's another example of how meaningful change happens not only through direct service, but also through advocacy. How You Can Help Veterans Purple Heart Homes depends on volunteers, corporate partners, donors, and local communities to continue its mission. Whether you have construction experience or simply want to lend a helping hand, volunteers are always welcome. Businesses can also partner with the organization through sponsorships, donations, and community projects that directly improve veterans' lives. To learn more about Purple Heart Homes, volunteer opportunities, or available programs, visit purplehearthomesusa.org. Supporting Military Families Beyond Housing At Armed Forces Bank, we're proud to highlight organizations making a real difference for military families and veterans. Financial wellness and housing often go hand in hand. Whether you're preparing to purchase a home using a VA home loan, exploring options to refinance your mortgage, opening a military checking account, building long-term savings with a military savings account, or planning your next chapter after military service, having trusted financial resources can help create a stronger future. Together, organizations like Purple Heart Homes and Armed Forces Bank are committed to helping service members, veterans, and military families build stability, independence, and lasting success. Real Employment Opportunities for Military Veterans - And How to Access Them
Welcome to Season 2 Episode 11 of the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery In this episode of Militarily Speaking, we sit down with Tim Shaw and Colin Block, two leaders dedicated to helping veterans succeed after service. Their conversation centers on transitioning from military to civilian life, highlighting practical strategies, support programs, and the importance of financial readiness for veterans and military families. “Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. Real Employment Opportunities for Military Veterans – And How to Access Them Tim Shaw, a West Point graduate and co-founder of multiple veteran support organizations, and Colin Block, a Marine Corps veteran working with Vitrify, share their personal journeys and professional insights. Together, they offer guidance on navigating career changes, education pathways, and the broader challenges veterans face during transition. Their experiences underscore how preparation, community, and access to veteran financial resources can significantly impact long-term success after military service. The Importance of Networking and SkillBridge Colin emphasizes that networking is one of the most valuable tools for service members preparing to transition. Starting early, ideally two years before separation, allows veterans to plan intentionally for both employment and financial stability. The SkillBridge program plays a critical role in this process by connecting service members with internships and fellowships while still on active duty. This hands-on experience supports career exploration and contributes to overall military financial readiness by reducing uncertainty during transition. The Reserves as a Military Transition Path Tim shares his experience in the reserves and explains how it can serve as a stabilizing bridge between military and civilian life. For many veterans, reserve service provides continued income, healthcare options, and a sense of structure are important factors in financial planning for service members and their families during times of change. Service to School: Education as a Veteran Resource Service to School, one of the nonprofit organizations Tim co-founded, helps enlisted veterans access higher education at top universities. Through its TRAIN model – test preparation, resume reviews, application assistance, interviewing assistance, and networking – the program expands educational opportunities and strengthens long-term financial readiness for military families. Financial Preparedness: A Cornerstone of Veteran Transition Both Tim and Colin stress that military financial readiness is essential for a smooth transition. Veterans are encouraged to plan ahead for changes in income, benefits, and healthcare, and to build strong financial habits early in their careers. Financial preparation, they note, is just as important as career planning when transitioning from military to civilian life. Encouraging Veteran Employment Tim and Colin highlight why veterans are such valuable hires, pointing to their discipline, adaptability, and teamwork. They encourage employers to engage with veteran employment programs to strengthen their workforce while supporting those who have served. Veterans and employers interested in transition support and veteran employment opportunities are encouraged to explore TheMilVet, SkillBridge, Service to School, and other veteran support organizations discussed in this episode. With the right resources and planning, veterans can confidently build a strong future beyond the uniform. Tune in as they highlight the importance of giving back and the enduring bonds formed in military service. “Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. How the Air Warrior Courage Foundation Is Quietly Saving Military Families The Air Warrior Courage Foundation was founded on the core military principle of never leaving a wingman behind. What began as an effort to help a fellow airman in need has evolved into a nationwide support network offering financial assistance for veterans, disaster relief, and aid to wounded service members and families of the fallen. Bud emphasized that AWCF’s mission extends across branches, reinforcing a shared commitment to financial readiness for military families and ensuring no service member faces hardship alone. Whether supporting Air Force families or partnering with Navy Wounded Warrior programs, the foundation reflects the deep bond shared by those who serve. Programs That Strengthen Financial Readiness for Military Families One of the impactful initiatives discussed on the podcast is AWCF’s helping families with 529 education savings accounts for children of service members who die on active duty – an important step toward long-term financial security for military families. These programs reduce future financial strain while honoring the sacrifice of fallen heroes. AWCF also partners with ROTC and JROTC programs nationwide, supporting education pathways that lead to military service and stable careers. These efforts align closely with broader goals around financial education for military families and preparing the next generation for success. Rags and Bud shared moving stories of lives changed through AWCF support, including helping a young boy overcome a severe speech impediment – demonstrating how targeted assistance can transform futures beyond immediate financial relief. Transparency, Integrity, and Veteran-Focused Financial Stewardship A key theme throughout the episode was accountability. AWCF operates with strong financial oversight, ensuring donations are used responsibly and effectively. This transparency builds trust and mirrors the values of organizations dedicated to veteran financial resources and responsible nonprofit leadership. Bud also discussed AWCF’s growth strategy, including expanding digital outreach, strengthening partnerships, and increasing visibility at military and veteran-focused events – all aimed at reaching more families in need of trusted financial support and resources. Veterans Leading Veterans Forward As leadership transitions to a new generation, AWCF remains firmly guided by veterans who understand the realities of military life and transitioning from military to civilian life. Sam shared how this firsthand experience allows the foundation to proactively identify needs and provide meaningful support before crises escalate. Their work reflects a broader commitment to ensuring veterans and families have access to financial guidance, emergency assistance, and long-term stability – values that align closely with the mission of military banking and veteran-focused financial services. After transitioning from active duty, he moved into consulting, continuing to support the defense community. Eventually, he was recruited to lead AMBA, where his passion for military financial education and service-centered leadership came full circle. His professional path reflects the strategic decision-making that many veterans face when navigating military transition financial planning, showing how financial literacy and readiness play key roles in long-term success. The Role of AMBA AMBA is the only trade association dedicated exclusively to military banks – financial institutions that provide specialized banking support, products, and resources for military families. Today, AMBA represents 98 military-focused banks and 8 non-bank members committed to strengthening financial readiness for military families through safe, accessible, and dependable financial services. Under Moose’s leadership, AMBA advocates for programs that enhance military financial resources, promote secure digital banking options for service members, and support trusted military credit-building tools and responsible lending, including military loans and transition-friendly financial products. Challenges and Opportunities in Military Banking As Moose reflects on his early Army days, he highlights how the evolution of military banking – from in-person deposits to mobile banking – has created both new efficiencies and new risks. Technology, including AI, offers powerful opportunities for improving military financial tools, but it also demands stronger cybersecurity and responsible innovation. These issues were central topics at the latest AMBA Summit, where industry leaders explored how technological shifts impact military financial readiness, service member protections, and safe financial access worldwide. Military Family Financial Complexities Moose shared personal stories that underscore the financial complexities military families face – from frequent PCS moves to challenges securing stable military spouse employment, which is critical to building long-term military family financial support. Each relocation disrupts income, savings, and career paths, making strong banking partnerships and military financial resources essential. AMBA and its member banks work to address these issues through spouse hiring programs, tailored financial products, and education that empowers families to maintain financial stability through every transition. Best Practices for Supporting Military Families Throughout our conversation, Moose highlighted how banks can support the unique needs of military families by offering: · Targeted financial education for military families· Safe and accessible military checking and military savings accounts· Low-cost military loans and military credit-building programs· Tools that simplify military money management during deployments and PCS moves· Career opportunities for military spouses These best practices strengthen financial readiness across the military community, helping families stay prepared for both everyday expenses and unexpected challenges. Looking forward, AMBA is enhancing its digital presence, branding, and community partnerships to expand its reach and improve access to military financial education and trustworthy banking resources. Moose’s vision focuses on ensuring that every service member and veteran has access to safe, reliable financial options that support readiness and long-term well-being. The brand reflects discipline, durability, and self-mastery – qualities rooted in Robert's military background and aligned with the broader mission of encouraging military entrepreneurs to build purpose-driven businesses. The Financial Moves Every Military Family Needs to Make - Advice from Navy Mutual’s Heather Walrath
Welcome to Season 2 Episode 5 of the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery In this episode of Militarily Speaking, we sit down with Heather Walrath of Navy Mutual Aid Association to discuss military financial readiness, budgeting for PCS moves, and long-term planning for veterans and service members. Discover expert tips on saving money, improving credit, managing military loans, and preparing for life after service. Whether you’re new to the military or nearing retirement, this episode is your guide to smarter military banking and financial success. “Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. The Financial Moves Every Military Family Needs to Make - Advice from Navy Mutual’s Heather Walrath The Navy Mutual Aid Association is the oldest federally recognized veteran service organization in the U.S., founded to support naval officers and their families after the Battle of Little Bighorn. Today, it provides life insurance, financial counseling, and educational resources across all branches of the military. Heather’s role gives her a front-row seat to the financial challenges military families face, from navigating military benefits to planning for retirement. Her passion lies in empowering families through financial literacy – ensuring every military service member understands the full scope of benefits and options available to them. Building Military Financial Readiness from Day One Heather emphasizes that financial education for service members should begin as early as possible. Her mantra – “Save from day one” – encourages young service members to take advantage of military savings accounts, the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), and high-yield savings options offered by military-friendly banks like Armed Forces Bank. She also highlights how financial planning for military families can prevent issues that affect security clearances and leadership opportunities. By setting shared goals and having regular “money dates,” military couples can improve communication and maintain financial wellness during deployments or PCS moves. Overcoming Common Financial Challenges in Military Life From frequent relocations to managing unexpected expenses, Heather outlines how military families can improve financial readiness through emergency savings, smart budgeting, and ongoing financial education. Her stories underscore the real-world impact of military financial resources – including one about helping a widow recover unclaimed benefits, illustrating how financial literacy directly supports the military community’s well-being. Collaboration Between Banks and the Military Community Heather stresses the importance of partnerships between financial institutions and veteran organizations. By hosting workshops, sharing resources about VA home loans, military checking and savings accounts, and access loans, banks can play a key role in improving financial literacy among service members and veterans. These collaborations ensure veterans and military families have access to trusted tools that promote financial independence and support their transition to civilian life. Defining Financial Success for Military Families Heather defines financial success not as wealth, but as peace of mind – the confidence that comes from being prepared for emergencies, living within your means, and making informed financial choices. Her approach aligns with Armed Forces Bank: to provide financial tools and guidance that help service members, veterans, and their families thrive, no matter where military life takes them. Building Financial Independence in the Military Community Heather Walrath’s insights highlight the critical role of financial readiness in the military community. From understanding military benefits to creating long-term stability through financial education, her message is clear: financial empowerment starts with knowledge and proactive planning. 27% of Military Families Are Doing This With Their Money and Why It’s Risky – with Bruce McClary of NFCC
Welcome to Season 2 Episode 4 of the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery In this episode of Militarily Speaking, we talk with Bruce McClary, Senior Vice President of Media Relations and Membership for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). Financial readiness is an essential part of life for military families, who often face unique financial challenges due to deployments, relocations, and transitions between duty stations. Together with hosts Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery, they explore the latest trends, tools, and financial resources for service members designed to promote military financial wellness and education. “Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. 27% of Military Families Are Doing This With Their Money and Why It’s Risky – with Bruce McClary of NFCC Returning as the first-ever repeat guest on Militarily Speaking, Bruce McClary shares his extensive experience helping service members and veterans achieve financial stability. Through his work with the NFCC, Bruce champions veteran financial education and financial counseling programs that help military families reduce debt, improve credit, and build stronger money management habits. His work directly supports financial readiness for the military community, empowering service members to make informed decisions about their financial futures. Cryptocurrency and Military Financial Decisions One of the most eye-opening discussions centers around cryptocurrency and its growing role in military financial behavior. Surveys reveal that over a quarter of active-duty service members and military spouses have invested in cryptocurrency – double the national average. Bruce warns of the volatility and limited consumer protections in this market, emphasizing that financial education for service members must now include guidance on emerging investment trends. Programs like the NFCC’s financial counseling services play a crucial role in helping military members understand these risks and build responsible investment strategies. Bridging the Financial Communication Gap in Military Households Military families often face emotional and logistical challenges when it comes to managing money. Despite frequent financial discussions, more than half of military couples report that money management is a source of conflict. Bruce explains that improving financial literacy in military households requires practical tools—like budgeting checklists and step-by-step resources—to support better communication. Strengthening military financial readiness starts with helping families have productive, informed conversations about money. Addressing Payday Loans and Hidden Financial Traps Another major concern discussed is the continued use of payday loans and “buy now, pay later” services among service members. These short-term solutions can easily spiral into debt traps that undermine financial wellness for military families. Bruce urges the community to take advantage of trusted military banking partners and veteran financial assistance programs instead of predatory lenders. Resources like those provided by the NFCC and Armed Forces Bank can help service members avoid costly mistakes and build long-term financial security. Strengthening Financial Education for Service Members Bruce emphasizes the importance of collaboration between military banks, nonprofit organizations, and educators to expand access to financial education for veterans and service members. This partnership-driven approach ensures that every military family has the tools and knowledge to handle challenges such as debt management, savings strategies, and home or business financing. Improving military financial readiness not only strengthens individual families but also enhances overall community resilience. Get Support from the NFCC If you’re a service member, veteran, or military spouse seeking financial guidance, the NFCC offers certified financial counselors who specialize in veteran financial education and support. Visit www.nfcc.org or call 1-800-388-2227 to access free or low-cost counseling that helps with budgeting, debt reduction, and credit improvement. This episode of Militarily Speaking highlights the ongoing need for financial readiness in the military community. By increasing awareness, improving access to reliable resources, and prioritizing financial education for service members, families can take proactive steps toward a more secure and confident financial future. How a Teen's Piggy Bank Changed Soldier Communication Forever
Welcome to the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery. In this episode of “Militarily Speaking,” Tom and Jodi sit down with Rob Bergquist, co-founder and Executive Director of Cell Phones for Soldiers. Rob shares the inspiring journey of how he and his sister Brittany started the nonprofit organization at the ages of 12 and 13 to help military members stay connected with their families. Find out how they’re continuing to innovate and serve the military community through programs like Minutes that Matter, Helping Heroes Home, and future plans, including the launch of their Soldiers Mobile Program.“Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. Ep. 80 – How a Teen's Piggy Bank Changed Soldier Communication ForeverIn today's interconnected world, access to communication is a fundamental necessity. Yet, for many of our service members and veterans, this basic need can sometimes be out of reach. This episode brings us an inspiring story of how two young siblings turned a moment of empathy into a transformative movement with their nonprofit organization, Cell Phones for Soldiers. The Mission to Help Soldiers Call Home In 2004, Rob Bergquist and his sister Brittany were just 12 and 13 years old when they felt moved by the plight of a soldier burdened with an $8,000 phone bill upon returning from Iraq. Motivated by a personal connection—two cousins actively serving overseas—the siblings decided to act. What began as a small fundraiser with a modest $21 collected from their classmates blossomed into a nationwide initiative. Encouraged by supportive parents and a local bank that believed in their mission, Rob and Brittany quickly garnered $8,000 to pay off the soldier's debt. Their swift success catapulted them into the national spotlight, forming the foundation of Cell Phones for Soldiers. Expanding to Help More Service Members Initially focused on providing calling cards to service members, Cell Phones for Soldiers has since grown exponentially. Through innovative methods like recycling used cell phones and electronics, the organization has funded over 450 million minutes of free talk time for deployed troops. As technology evolved, so did the nonprofit. With increased connectivity becoming available globally, the demand for calling cards diminished, prompting the Bergquists to adapt their services. In 2012, they expanded their mission by establishing the Helping Heroes Home program, offering emergency assistance grants to veterans in need. More recently, the launch of Cell Phones for Soldiers Mobile furthers their reach, providing free smartphones and a year of service to veterans. This initiative aims to connect 30,000 veterans over the next three years, helping them access vital resources and maintain ties with loved ones during their transition to civilian life. Partnerships and Future Goals of Cell Phones for Soldiers Rob emphasizes the importance of partnerships in the organization’s success. Collaborations with third parties like logistics specialists that help manage the influx of donated phones, help ensure maximum resource efficiency. Additionally, partnering with local organizations and service officer networks allows Cell Phones for Soldiers to target veterans effectively and connect them with the right resources. Looking to the future, Rob is excited about the potential of a Cell Phones for Soldiers mobile app. This app will enhance the service by providing veterans with access to essential local resources at the touch of a button. Rob envisions a robust community of veterans supporting each other, with phone bills potentially contributing to the sustainability of this growing network. Family-Driven Dedication A testament to its widespread success is the unwavering family involvement from day one. Both Brittany and Rob have been pivotal in navigating the nonprofit’s course, celebrating their achievements and learning from challenges. As Rob reflects on his father's recent passing, he finds deep motivation in honoring his dad through ongoing service, emphasizing that every connected veteran is a tribute to his father's legacy. Get Involved with Cell Phones for Soldiers Cell Phones for Soldiers relies on support from individuals and corporations alike. Whether it’s donating an old phone, becoming a drop-off location, or fostering corporate partnerships for device turnover, every contribution makes a significant impact. As Rob often advises aspiring non-profiters, the key to their enduring success lies in staying focused on the mission while being willing to innovate and adapt. Rob and his family continue to inspire with their commitment to bridging gaps in communication for those who serve. With over two decades of service, Cell Phones for Soldiers stands as a beacon of support for veterans seeking to stay connected with those who matter most. As technology advances, so too will the creative solutions and profound impact of this family-run organization, ensuring that no veteran is ever left without a lifeline. Supporting Deployed Service Members with HeroBox
Welcome to the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery. In this episode of “Militarily Speaking,” Tom and Jodi talk with Katy Saunders, Program Director at HeroBox. Together they delve into HeroBox's mission to provide personalized care packages to deployed service members, their Hero Day events, and how individuals and organizations can support deployed military members.“Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. Ep. 78 – Supporting Deployed Service Members with HeroBoxIn a world where everyday challenges often obscure the sacrifices made by our service members, HeroBox emerges as a beacon of support and gratitude for those deployed overseas. HeroBox was founded with a mission to provide personalized care packages to deployed service members, bridging the gap between home and the frontlines. The initiative began when its founder noticed that a loved one, while deployed, needed a more tailored care package. Today, HeroBox has grown to support nearly a million deployed service members with the help of over 20,000 registered sponsors and countless Hero Day events. The Power of Personalization for Service Members A key element that sets HeroBox apart from other care package organizations is its emphasis on personalization. As described by Katy Saunders, donors can directly communicate with service members, ensuring that they receive items that cater to their specific needs and desires. Whether it's a request for gloves in cold regions or a servicemember’s favorite snacks, the personal touch can transform a care package from being merely a box of goods to a heartfelt reminder of home and support. Hero Day Events: Building Community Ties to Support the Troops Hero Day events are one of Katy's favorite aspects of her role, as they foster both community involvement and support for the troops. Corporations, businesses, and even classrooms can organize Hero Days to pack and send personalized care packages. The events act as team-building exercises while serving as meaningful contributors to HeroBox's mission. Spreading the Word and Growing the Impact Although HeroBox is relatively small, its impact is significant, thanks in part to word-of-mouth and community engagement. The team is dedicated to ensuring that every service member feels the appreciation and support of those at home. With plans to expand into supporting homeless veterans, HeroBox is poised to continue its mission of service and care. How You Can Help Deployed Military Members Katy shared that individuals and companies interested in supporting HeroBox can visit their user-friendly website (herobox.org) to get involved. Whether through financial donations or by organizing Hero Day events, every contribution helps extend their reach. The website provides various donation options, including sponsoring individual care packages or supplying essential items for multiple troops. HeroBox stands as a testament to the impact a small, dedicated organization can have on the lives of our military personnel. Welcome to the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery. In this episode of “Militarily Speaking,” Tom and Jodi have a heartfelt conversation with Jack Oehm, a retired FDNY Battalion Commander and current board member of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. This episode dives into Jack's contributions to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, its mission, and the impactful work being done, such as building smart homes for injured veterans and supporting the families of fallen first responders and Gold Star Families.“Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. Ep. 77 – The Astonishing Legacy of a 9/11 Firefighter and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation The episode kicks off with a discussion about the Tunnel to Towers Foundation's beginnings, closely tied to the events of September 11, 2001. Jack Oehm shares the harrowing yet inspiring story of firefighter Stephen Siller, who on that fateful day ran nearly two miles through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers with 60 pounds of gear on his back. Though Stephen lost his life in his heroic efforts, his legacy lives on through Tunnel to Towers. The Foundation was established by his family to honor not only him but all the victims of 9/11 and the brave souls who came to their aid. Honoring Their Sacrifice Jack paints a vivid picture of the Foundation's evolution from its grassroots beginnings, reflecting on its commitment to supporting communities affected by 9/11 and subsequent tragedies. One significant turning point was the decision to build the first "smart home" for quadruple amputee and fellow Staten Islander, Brendan Marrocco. This initiative was the start of a larger program that has since provided more than 200 smart homes to severely injured veterans. Building Smart Homes and More The creation of smart homes is just one facet of the Foundation's impactful work. These homes are designed to adapt to the needs of their occupants, offering a level of independence that many lost in service to their country. In 2023 alone, the Foundation plans to build 60 more smart homes, demonstrating a commitment to expanding their support. Paying Off Mortgages for Fallen Heroes Jack also discusses other pivotal programs such as their efforts to pay off mortgages for families of fallen first responders and Gold Star families. This support extends a lifeline to those who have lost loved ones in the line of duty, ensuring they have one less burden to bear during their time of grief. Helping Tunnel to Towers Foundation Throughout the podcast, the hosts and Jack emphasize how listeners can contribute, whether through participating in various fundraising events like golf outings and 5K runs or by donating directly to the Foundation. One of the most accessible ways to support is their $11 a month donation initiative, which significantly aids in continuing the Foundation's vital work. Looking Forward: A Commitment to Never Forget As the conversation winds down, Jack highlights the Foundation's latest ambitious endeavor: a program aimed at eradicating homelessness among veterans. It's a testament to their evolving mission, ensuring no veteran is left without a roof over their head. Ep. 66 How Operation Deploy Your Dress is Changing Military Life
Welcome to the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery. In this episode of “Militarily Speaking,” Tom and Jodi sit down with Yvonne Coombes, CEO, and co-founder of Operation Deploy Your Dress (ODYD), to discover the inspiring journey of how a simple dress swap at Fort Bliss turned into a national movement providing over 25,000 free formal gowns to military families. Learn about their 15th store opening at Fort Leavenworth, overcoming challenges of lacking permanent locations, and the dedication of volunteers. Yvonne shares insights on the role of community support, and the morale-boosting impact on military families.“Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are.Ep. 66 – How Operation Deploy Your Dress is Changing Military LifeThe seeds of Operation Deploy Your Dress were sown in December 2015 at Fort Bliss, Texas. What began as a casual conversation among military spouses quickly evolved into a transformative project. Initially planned as a two-day dress swap for unit spouses attending military balls, the initiative gathered unexpected momentum. The community's overwhelming support exceeded expectations, with a modest goal of 200 dresses rapidly expanding to a staggering 3,000.Yvonne recalls the serendipitous moment when the Garrison Commander offered a vacated gift shop as a space to house the growing collection of dresses. This pivotal moment set the foundation for what would become a global movement, highlighting the community's eagerness to support military families.Beyond Dresses: Building Military Community and SkillsOperation Deploy Your Dress is more than just about dresses; it’s about fostering military community and empowerment. From its inception, ODYD has worked to eliminate the stigma of receiving a free dress. The organization prides itself on inclusivity, offering formal attire to everyone from E1 spouses to four-star general spouses, with no rank restrictions. Moreover, ODYD provides military spouses with invaluable skills through volunteering. Running a dress shop demands inventory management, team leadership, and organizational skills, all of which are transferable to other professional opportunities. Many volunteers have leveraged their experience to secure employment, demonstrating the initiative's broader impact beyond the distribution of dresses.Military Installation Locations and ExpansionAs ODYD expands its reach, it navigates various challenges, from securing financial resources to navigating compliance in multiple states. Despite these hurdles, the organization perseveres, continually seeking new partners and exploring prospects to extend their support to additional military installations, including those of the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. The joy of witnessing lives transform keeps the ODYD team motivated. Yvonne shares a touching story of a new military spouse who, unable to afford a dress, stumbled upon an ODYD event and found a gown. The experience was a turning point, fostering connections and a sense of belonging within the military community.Looking AheadWith eyes set on future expansions, Yvonne remains tight-lipped about potential new sites (much to Tom's curiosity). However, the call for support is clear. The organization continuously invites more people to join the mission, whether through financial contributions, volunteering, or simply spreading the word.Do you have formal wear hanging in your closet, just waiting for a second life? Consider donating to Operation Deploy Your Dress! Visit their website at OperationDeployYourDress.org to learn how you can contribute, either by sending dresses directly or by getting involved in other meaningful ways.Military MinuteJodi introduces the Military Minute segment of the show, beginning by closing out last episode’s Military Minute.● Last episode’s Military Minute: What is the name of the structure that was built in the Pennsylvania field to commemorate the passengers on Flight 93?● Answer: Tower of Voices● This week’s Military Minute question: In what year did the military ball originate?● Watch for Facebook and Instagram posts about this episode.● Answer with the correct answer and you plus a charity of your choice can each win $50.● After a winning selection, Military Minute participants are eligible for another selection after 12 months. The current score sits on the cusp of Stage 6, "tightening the belt," implicating serious financial adjustments for many households.Bruce explained that consumers are increasingly relying on credit to manage their expenses, leading to a ‘brick wall scenario’ where debt becomes unmanageable. The Financial Stress Forecast helps predict such crises, enabling timely intervention and assistance.Financial Strain on Military FamiliesFinancial challenges significantly affect military families. The NFCC has observed through its partnerships and surveys, including a Harris Poll, that financial uncertainty and strain are rampant among service members.Military families often turn to non-traditional financial services like payday loans and cryptocurrency. Gig work is also common, with many military households supplementing income through side jobs. Financial discord is another prevalent issue, exacerbated by deployments and PCS moves which make it difficult for spouses to maintain consistent employment.Tackling Financial StressBruce offered sage advice: proactive steps in seeking financial counseling can mitigate the impacts of financial stress, especially in military households where debt issues can affect security clearances and career advancement. One of the standout features of the NFCC is its personalized approach to financial counseling. Ep. 61 – Reviving Patriotism: How The Grateful Nation Project is Honoring America's Fallen Heroes Tom kicks off the episode by introducing the guest of honor, Craig Du Mez. Jodi provides a warm welcome, sharing some background on Craig and the Grateful Nation Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to gathering, preserving, and sharing stories of fallen heroes. They create hero cards and online biographies for U.S. military service members who lost their lives while serving from the Revolutionary War to present day. A Grateful AdvocateCraig explains the mission of the Grateful Nation Project: to ensure that stories of sacrifice are never forgotten. He shares personal anecdotes and the motivation behind the initiative, including how the project began as a simple idea to hand out hero cards during Memorial Day parades and evolved into a comprehensive program involving both cards and detailed online biographies. Heartfelt Personal Stories Connecting Veterans and Their FamiliesCraig shares a touching interaction with a relative of Daniel Hawk, the first soldier killed in the Civil War. This cousin, living in the UK, reached out and expressed pride in their ancestor's service. Such anecdotes underscore the project's profound impact not only on American families but also families abroad. Educational IntegrationJodi brings up the innovative ways schools are incorporating the hero cards and narratives into their curricula. Craig mentions that the Grateful Nation Project offers flexible implementation strategies for schools. From simple one-off events to more integrated lessons involving research projects and presentations, schools can tailor the project to fit their educational needs. Feedback from teachers highlights the program's effectiveness. One teacher noted how their students were so engaged they didn't want to leave for lunch. This demonstrates the project's ability to make history personal and relatable for students, transforming abstract historical events into human stories of bravery and sacrifice. Donations and Volunteer SupportCraig sheds light on the critical role of donations, explaining how contributions are used to print and distribute hero cards, cover research costs, and support outreach efforts. He also encourages listeners to volunteer by engaging local schools and veterans' organizations, underscoring the need for community involvement to expand the project's reach. Declining PatriotismCraig discusses a concerning survey indicating a sharp decline in patriotism among younger generations. He attributes this to the diminished direct connection many Americans have with the military. By introducing real-life hero stories into schools, the Grateful Nation Project aims to rekindle a sense of patriotism and gratitude for the freedoms we often take for granted. Craig ends by highlighting the importance of honoring the fallen and ensuring their sacrifices are remembered. By educating the younger generation and fostering a sense of gratitude, the Grateful Nation Project hopes to create a truly grateful nation where the memories of fallen heroes are preserved and cherished. Ep. 59 How Nature Heals War-Torn Minds: Warrior Expeditions with Sean Gobin
Welcome to the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery. In this episode of “Militarily Speaking,” Tom and Jodi are joined by Sean Gobin, founder and Executive Director of Warrior Expeditions. This veteran-focused nonprofit leverages the healing power of nature to help military servicemen and women transition back to civilian life through long-distance outdoor expeditions. “Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are.Ep. 59 – How Nature Heals War-Torn Minds: Warrior Expeditions with Sean Gobin The episode opens with an enthusiastic welcome to Sean Gobin, who founded Warrior Expeditions as a way to assist veterans in processing their wartime experiences. Sean is a United States Marine Corps veteran who served for 12 years and has firsthand experience of the challenges faced by veterans during their transition to civilian life. The Inspiration Behind Warrior Expeditions After returning from deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Sean hiked the Appalachian Trail. This experience helped him process his wartime experiences, inspiring him to create a nonprofit organization to offer similar opportunities to other veterans. His venture has been particularly successful, combining outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and paddling with community support. The Healing Power of Nature for Veterans Sean outlines three key components that make outdoor therapy impactful: 1. Time and Space in Nature: Long expeditions give veterans much-needed time and space to process and decompress from their wartime experiences.2. Camaraderie: Veterans often undertake these journeys with others who have similar experiences, fostering a supportive community.3. Community Support: Regular interactions with local communities along the trail help re-establish veterans' faith in humanity, which can often be shaken by their experiences during deployments. Focus on Continuous Exposure to Nature Sean emphasizes how the length of these expeditions—ranging from three to six months—provides significant therapeutic benefits. He contrasts this with shorter-duration programs, pointing out that long-term engagement with nature allows for deeper emotional processing and healing. Outfitting Veterans with Gear and Support Warrior Expeditions provide veterans with all the gear and support they need for their expeditions.
