Ep 91: GLP-1s and Running - Fueling, Muscle Loss, and the Bigger Picture, with Dietician, Ann Kent & Dr. Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

GLP-1 medications seem to be everywhere right now. From conversations in the physicians' lounge to social media feeds, these medications have become a major part of the discussion around weight, health, and wellness, but what do runners need to know about training while taking a GLP-1? In this episode, I sit down with registered dietitian Ann Kent to discuss how GLP-1 medications work, who may benefit from them, and the unique challenges they can create for runners and athletes. We explore how these medications affect appetite, fueling, recovery, muscle mass, and performance. We also discuss the importance of strength training, recognizing signs of underfueling, and knowing when it's time to talk with your healthcare team about adjusting your medication. Most importantly, we dive into the bigger conversation around body image, diet culture, and the reminder that pursuing health should never mean ignoring your body's need for nourishment. In This Episode We Discuss: What GLP-1 medications are and how they work Why these medications were originally developed for diabetes management Who may be an appropriate candidate for a GLP-1 Why runners have unique nutritional considerations while taking these medications The connection between GLP-1s, weight loss, and muscle loss Why strength training is so important while on these medications Protein and calorie goals for active individuals Common signs of underfueling and malnutrition Body image, diet culture, and disordered eating concerns Why weight loss alone isn't always a marker of improved health Key Takeaways Hunger is a normal biological signal, not something to eliminate completely. If your appetite is so suppressed that you can go all day without eating, it's worth discussing your medication dose with your healthcare provider. Strength training and adequate protein intake are critical for preserving muscle mass while losing weight. Runners on GLP-1 medications need to be especially intentional about fueling and recovery. Weight loss does not automatically equal health. You deserve nourishment at every body size. Ep 90: Heat, Humidity, & Expectations - A Smarter Way to Train, with Dr. Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

Summer running can challenge your body and your mind. For many runners, especially high-achieving athletes and women physicians, summer running can bring frustration when paces slow or workouts feel harder than expected.  In this replay episode, I’m revisiting one of the most practical and important conversations from the Mindful Marathon archives about how to train safely, confidently, and compassionately in the heat and humidity. This episode is your reminder that adapting to conditions is part of training wisely. Whether you’re preparing for a fall race, rebuilding consistency, or simply trying to make summer running feel more manageable, this episode will help you adjust your training with intention instead of judgment. Inside this episode, we discuss: Why running in the heat feels harder and what your body is doing to keep you cool How heat and humidity impact pace, heart rate, and perceived effort Why slowing down in the summer is not a sign of weakness, but smart training Tips for hydration, electrolytes, and estimating your sweat rate What to wear and when to run to stay safer and more comfortable The warning signs of heat-related illness and when it’s time to stop How heat acclimatization can actually improve your fitness for fall racing Why training by effort and not pace is important for safety and consistency Every summer mile builds resilience both physically and mentally. What’s one adjustment you’re making to your summer running routine? DM me or email your questions about training in the heat. I’d love to hear from you and feature your question in a future episode. Ep 89: Mindfulness Moments - Softening the Inner Critic, with Coach Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

Welcome to another installment of Mindfulness Moments on the Mindful Marathon Podcast. In this episode, we’re exploring something many runners and high-achieving women know well which is the inner critic. That voice that tells us we should be doing more, we’re falling behind, we’re not doing enough, or that rest must be earned. For many women physicians and professionals, self-criticism and hypervigilance were reinforced for years in training and in work environments where the avoidance of failure felt necessary for success. While those patterns may have helped us achieve, they can also leave us exhausted, anxious, and disconnected from ourselves. This episode is an invitation to pause. Together, we explore common patterns of self-critical thinking in runners and high-achievers, why the inner critic develops in the first place, how mindfulness can help us observe thoughts without immediately believing them, and a guided meditation designed to help you soften self-judgment and reconnect with self-compassion. This practice can be used on an easy run or walk, during moments of stress, or before bed when your mind feels especially busy. The goal is not to eliminate difficult thoughts but to create a little more space around them. You can care deeply about your goals and still speak to yourself with kindness. Ep 88: Healing the Athlete Within - A Conversation About Anorexia, Running, and Recovery, with Dr. Jillian Rigert & Dr. Michelle Quirk

In this deeply personal and vulnerable conversation, I sit down with my friend Dr. Jillian Rigert, to discuss her lived experience with anorexia nervosa, recovery, trauma, and running. Jillian shares the story behind her many career pivots, from military oral surgery to oral medicine, cancer care, coaching, and now training to become a marriage and family therapist with a focus on trauma. Together, we explore the complicated intersection of endurance sports and eating disorders, how running both fueled and helped her heal, and the ongoing work of rebuilding a compassionate relationship with movement, fueling, identity, and self-worth. We discuss: Anorexia nervosa and eating disorder recovery The overlap between endurance sports and disordered behaviors Trauma, shame, and identity loss Career transitions and perfectionism in medicine RED-S and the physical impact of underfueling Learning to run with self-compassion instead of punishment Recovery as a daily, intentional practice The importance of safe, validating support systems Jillian also speaks candidly about the realities of recovery that often remain invisible including body dysmorphia, intrusive thoughts, nervous system dysregulation, and the challenges of healing in a culture obsessed with productivity and thinness. This episode is a reminder that healing is rarely linear, and that strength can look like slowing down, asking for help, and choosing compassion over punishment. Please note that this episode includes discussion of anorexia nervosa, eating disorders, suicidality, hospitalization, trauma, and compulsive exercise. Please listen with care and prioritize your wellbeing. Ep 87: Friendship, Character Stops, & My Favorite 10-Miler Yet - runDisney Springtime Surprise 2026 Recap, with Coach Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

On this week’s episode of the Mindful Marathon Podcast, I’m recapping my weekend at runDisney’s Springtime Surprise Weekend 2026. In this episode, I share my best takeaways from the weekend including why an adults-only run-cation with running friends can feel so restorative, why we chose to skip the parks entirely this trip, how I approached race strategy differently for the 10k vs the 10-Miler, the mindset shift that finally allowed me to stop for character photos during a Disney race for the first time ever in ten years of running Disney, and why letting go of pace and productivity actually made the experience more meaningful and fun. Plus, we look ahead to runDisney's Wine & Dine Weekend this October. We discuss the upcoming Proof of Time deadline, why proof of time matters for corrals and race strategy, and upcoming Wine & Dine specific, Mindful Marathon training plans that are coming soon. Ep 86: Running with What We Carry - Finding Our Strength and Grace, with Coaches Gerald Collins & Michelle Quirk

In this episode, I sit down with fellow run coach Gerald Collins, founder of Run Rev Coaching and host of Stronger Than the Struggle, a podcast which explores the intersection of running, grief, and mental health. Gerald shares his deeply personal story of losing his mother and how that loss led him to running as a path back to purpose, connection, and healing. Together, we talk about how grief shows up in our lives and our running, and why movement can be a powerful tool for processing difficult emotions. This conversation is a reminder that grief is not linear, healing doesn’t follow a timeline, and that sometimes, showing up for even a few minutes is enough. What we talk about: Gerald’s journey from loss and depression to finding purpose through running Why physical activity can support mental health and where it fits alongside therapy  The role of community in healing  How grief can show up differently from day to day Redefining success in training during difficult seasons The power of small, sustainable changes, starting with just 5 minutes Letting go of “only” and “just” when we talk about our efforts A few key takeaways: “You never get over the person you lost. You learn to live without them.” The goal isn’t perfection but rather, consistency with grace. Training should fit into your life, not the other way around. Small wins count. Five minutes counts. It all adds up. Ep 85: Training for Longevity - Redefining Success in Fitness as We Age, with Dr. Tracy Asamoah & Dr. Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

How should our relationship with exercise evolve as we move through different stages of life? In this episode, I’m joined by physician, leadership coach, and consultant Dr. Tracy Asamoah to talk about how our fitness goals often shift as we age, especially for high-achieving professionals and women physicians. Dr. Asamoah shares her personal journey with exercise, from early motivations around appearance, to a deeper focus on longevity, strength, and aging well. We also explore how identity and habits shape our relationship with exercise, why consistency matters more than intensity, and how our goals naturally evolve as life circumstances change. If you’ve ever felt your motivation shift from chasing PRs to simply wanting to stay strong and healthy for decades to come, this conversation will resonate with you.   In this episode, we discuss: How our fitness motivations evolve over time The role of identity in exercise habits Consistency over perfection Exercise in midlife and beyond Fitness as a lifelong lifestyle Memorable takeaways from the episode include: Consistency is the foundation of sustainable fitness. Something is always better than nothing. Exercise goals naturally evolve as our lives and bodies change. Fitness in midlife becomes less about performance and more about longevity. Ep 84: Running a Marathon in Residency - Finding Flexibility in a Demanding Schedule, with Dr. Lily Stafford & Dr. Michelle Quirk

Residency is one of the busiest and most demanding seasons in a physician’s career. Long hours, unpredictable schedules, and emotional intensity can make it feel nearly impossible to maintain healthy habits, let alone train for a marathon. In this episode of the Mindful Marathon Podcast, I’m joined by pediatric resident Dr. Lily Stafford, who decided to take on the challenge of training for the Philadelphia Marathon during her second year of residency. Despite an ever-changing clinical schedule, Lily found a way to balance marathon training with the realities of residency. By focusing on flexibility instead of perfection, she was able to stay consistent with her training, and even run a personal record on race day. We talk about what it really looks like to train for a marathon while working long hospital hours, the mindset shifts that helped her stay on track, and the lessons she learned along the way. If you’re a busy physician, or anyone balancing a demanding career with running, this episode is a reminder that your training plan should support your life, not compete with it.  In this episode, we talk about: Why Lily decided to sign up for the Philadelphia Marathon during residency What marathon training actually looked like during busy clinical rotations Letting go of the idea of the “perfect” training plan How flexibility and mindset helped her stay consistent The role running played in supporting her mental health during residency Practical strategies for fitting runs into an unpredictable schedule What surprised her most about training during residency Advice for women physicians who want to keep running while navigating demanding careers If you would like to connect with Lily, you can find her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drlilystafford  Follow Coach Michelle on Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/Mindful.Marathon If you have questions about your own training, reach out on Coach Michelle's website, and let's explore working together for personalized support. https://mindful-marathon.com *** The information contained in this podcast is intended to serve as educational information and is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Ep 83: Running on Empty - How to Fuel Your Training the Right Way, with May Tran & Dr. Michelle Quirk

Many runners focus on the miles in their training plan but overlook the nutrition that supports those miles. In this episode of the Mindful Marathon Podcast, I’m joined by registered dietitian nutritionist May Tran, founder of All Year Nutrition. We talk about one of the most common challenges busy professionals face which is inconsistent fueling. When work schedules are unpredictable and life is full, it’s easy to unintentionally underfuel your training. May shares practical strategies to help runners shift their mindset around food, from eating around their workouts to fueling their bodies to support performance, recovery, and overall health. We also talk about how runners can build a more balanced and neutral relationship with food, and why consistency is the key. Whether you’re training for your first race or balancing miles with a demanding career, this episode will give you simple, realistic ways to support your running through better fueling. In this episode, we discuss: Common fueling patterns in busy runners and professionals Why many runners unintentionally underfuel during the day How to reframe eating as fuel for performance, not something you “earn” Practical strategies for consistent eating with an unpredictable schedule The role of carbohydrates for endurance athletes Why protein matters  Quick and easy post-run fueling options for busy mornings How a mindset of moderation and neutral nutrition supports a healthier relationship with food One simple step you can take this week to improve your fueling If you would like to connect with May, you can find her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/Allyearnutrition Check out her website: https://allyearnutrition.com/ Follow Coach Michelle on Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/Mindful.Marathon If you have questions about your own training, reach out on Coach Michelle's website, and let's explore working together for personalized support. https://mindful-marathon.com *** The information contained in this podcast is intended to serve as educational information and is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Ep 82: The Perfectionism Trap in Running - Why Your Training Plan Should Adapt to Your Schedule, Not the Other Way Around, with Dr. Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

Many physicians bring the same traits that help them succeed in medicine into their running: discipline, commitment, and a strong sense of responsibility. Give a physician runner a training plan, and they will often follow it almost perfectly. But sometimes those strengths can become a trap. In this episode, I explore the physician perfectionism trap in running and how the drive for consistency and high performance can sometimes lead runners to ignore signs of fatigue, feel discouraged after missing a workout, or hold themselves to unrealistic expectations. Running, like medicine, requires commitment. But unlike medicine, endurance training also requires flexibility, recovery, and the ability to adapt when life inevitably gets in the way. In this episode, we talk about how to recognize perfectionist tendencies in training and how to build a more sustainable, flexible approach to running. In this episode, we discuss: Why physicians and high-achieving professionals often bring perfectionist tendencies into running Why missing a run doesn’t derail your training The importance of paying attention to signals your body may need rest or recovery How unrealistic expectations can create unnecessary stress around training Why your training plan should adapt to your schedule and not the other way around Common reminders I give my athletes about consistency, recovery, and flexibility in training Running doesn’t require perfect training weeks to make meaningful progress. Often, the strongest runners are the ones who learn to adjust their training with curiosity, flexibility, and compassion for themselves.   If you are a woman physician and are interested in attending Coach Michelle's RestRx Retreat in Cape May, NJ this September, message her on Instagram or send her an email. Ep 81: Running Between Clinic, Call, and Family - Run Training for Doctors who Have No Time, with Dr. Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

Can busy physicians really train for a race? Between long clinic days, night shifts, weekends on call, and family responsibilities, many women physicians feel like running, or any consistent exercise, is nearly impossible to maintain. In this episode, I share my personal story of physician burnout and how running became a powerful tool for restoring balance, resilience, and space outside of medicine. I also discuss practical strategies I use with my physician athletes to help them train for races while navigating demanding and unpredictable schedules. If you’ve ever wondered whether race training is possible alongside a busy medical career, this episode is for you. In this episode, we talk about: My experience with physician burnout and how running helped me reconnect with myself outside of medicine Why traditional training plans often don’t work for physicians How time-efficient training can still build endurance and fitness The importance of flexible training plans when schedules change week to week Letting go of perfectionism and embracing a more mindful approach to running Real-life examples of how busy physicians successfully train for races   Running doesn’t have to compete with your career, your family, or your well-being. With the right approach, it can become a powerful way to support all three. If you enjoyed this episode, please consider sharing it with a colleague or fellow physician who might benefit from a more flexible approach to run training. Ep 80: Mindfulness Moments - Race Day Visualization, with Coach Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

Welcome to another Mindfulness Moment. These episodes feature a short practice you can return to whenever you want to feel more steady, prepared, and connected. In this episode, we’re focusing on race day visualization, a powerful tool to help you mentally and emotionally prepare for your next race. Race day often brings a mix of excitement, anticipation, and nerves. Visualization allows you to walk through the experience ahead of time, so when the moment arrives, it feels more familiar and grounded. This is not about imagining a “perfect” race. It’s about preparing your mind to respond with steadiness, confidence, and care, even when challenges arise. In this episode, you’ll be guided through: A pre-visualization writing exercise to help you imagine your race day in detail A guided visualization walking you from race morning to the finish line Sensory awareness prompts to anchor you in the moment (sights, sounds, physical sensations) Gentle strategies for navigating common race-day challenges with intention You can use this practice in the days leading up to your race, the night before, or even the morning of, as a way to center yourself. My hope is that this episode helps you feel a little more calm, a little more prepared, and a little more trusting of the work you’ve already done. Ep 76: The Struggle from Within - Running, Resilience, & Mental Health, with Qwazir James and Coach Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

Last year, I had the privilege of interviewing Qwazir James, as part of our Podcasthon episode featuring Students Run Philly Style. At the time, he was already thoughtful, driven, and deeply committed to running. This year, he came back on the podcast with something even more powerful: his story. Qwazir shares, with remarkable honesty, his experience navigating a difficult season in his life, seeking help from a psychiatrist and therapist, and learning that strength sometimes looks like asking for support. He opens up about how running became more than a sport.  At just 18 years old, he speaks with a depth of wisdom that will stop you in your tracks. This conversation is about: The courage it takes to ask for help The role of therapy and psychiatric care in mental wellness How movement, especially running, can support mental health Why sharing our stories matters And how young leaders are stepping up to make a difference As part of his senior project at Science Leadership Academy, Qwazir is serving as race director for the SLA Road to Glory 5k on Saturday, May 9th in Philadelphia. The race is free to register, with the hope that participants will donate on race day to support a mental health cause that Qwazir will announce soon. Ep 75: Stay Stronger, Run Longer - Why Runners Should Lift Heavy, with Dr. Esra Shermadou & Dr. Michelle Quirk

Many runners focus on mileage, but what about durability? In this episode of the Mindful Marathon Podcast, I’m joined by Dr. Esra Shermadou, board-certified family and obesity medicine physician and founder of Sakinah Health. She helps active adults build resilient, long-lasting bodies through evidence-based strength training, and she makes a compelling case for why runners should lift heavy. We discuss: *Why heavy lifting improves running economy and injury resilience *The 5 foundational strength exercises every runner should consider *How beginners can start safely and progress with confidence *How experienced lifters can train smarter alongside their running *Why strength training supports longevity and not just performance Strength training isn’t about getting bulky or chasing aesthetics. It’s about building a body that can handle the miles right now and for decades to come. If you’ve been unsure about lifting heavy, this episode will give you clarity and a practical place to start. Ep 74: What AI Can't See - The Human Side of Run Coaching, with Coach Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

AI-powered running apps and training plans are everywhere right now. With just a few clicks, you can enter your race goal, availability, and recent paces, and instantly get a training plan. It’s fast, inexpensive, and tempting. But in this solo episode, Coach Michelle shares why writing a training plan is actually the easiest part of her job, and why AI, no matter how advanced, can’t replace the human side of run coaching. In this episode, we explore: What AI-based training plans can and cannot do Why real coaching happens between the workouts, not just on the spreadsheet How life stress, illness, poor sleep, and emotional load affect training and why those signals are easy to miss with AI The injury and burnout risks of aggressive, context-blind progression Why accountability, empathy, and real-time feedback matter more than ever What a coach actually does beyond writing a plan This episode is about understanding the limits of algorithms and the irreplaceable value of human connection, judgment, and support in long-term, sustainable running. Reflection question for listeners: What’s the ONE thing a coach has done for you that AI never could? Ep 73: Rethinking the 20-Mile Long Run - What Matters in Marathon Training, with Coach Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

Do You Really Need a 20-Mile Long Run to Train for a Marathon? For decades, marathon training advice has centered around one idea: you must run 20 miles before race day. But is that actually true?  In this episode of the Mindful Marathon Podcast, we take a closer look at where the 20-mile long run came from, who it was designed for, and how to determine if you need to be running a 20-miler in training. You’ll learn how marathon fitness is built through consistent, cumulative training, and how a mindful, time-based approach can help you train smarter, reduce injury risk, and arrive at the start line confident and healthy. In this episode, we cover: The historical origins of the 20-mile long run and why it stuck Why time on feet matters more than distance for long runs How to train for 26.2 miles without ever running 20 in one go How to build mental confidence without chasing a “20-mile badge” When a 20-miler makes sense for your training, and when it doesn’t If you’ve ever felt anxious, behind, or “not marathon ready” because you didn’t hit 20 miles in training, this episode is for you. You don’t need to prove anything in training. You’re allowed to train in a way that supports your body and your life. Ep 72: Mindfulness Moments - Guided Visualization & Body Scan, with Coach Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

Welcome to Mindfulness Moments. This will be a recurring series  on the Mindful Marathon Podcast where Coach Michelle shares simple mindfulness practices you can return to whenever you desire. In this episode, you’ll be guided through two gentle practices designed to help you reconnect with your body and settle your nervous system, whether you’re on an easy run, out for a walk, or winding down before sleep. These practices are not about performance or fixing anything. They’re an invitation to slow down, notice, and breathe, especially during times when life feels heavy or overwhelming. In this episode, you’ll experience: A guided reflection you can use during a time-based run or run/walk, allowing effort and presence to lead instead of pace or distance A guided body scan you can practice while moving slowly or lying down, helping to release tension and support rest You can return to these practices anytime: When your mind feels busy When your body feels tense When you want to move with more awareness Or when you simply need a pause Running and movement can be a refuge, a way to come back into your body and to protect your peace. My hope is that these Mindfulness Moments offer you a small pocket of calm you can carry into the rest of your day. *** Coach Michelle practices a variety of mindfulness techniques with her 1 on 1 clients, and also at her retreats. Ep 71: Running by Time - Training Your Body Without Grading Yourself, with Dr. Michelle Quirk of Mindful Marathon

What if running didn’t come with a scorecard? In this episode of the Mindful Marathon Podcast, physician and run coach Michelle Quirk explores running by time instead of distance and why this approach can be especially helpful for women physicians and busy professional women who are used to tracking, measuring, and grading themselves. Running by time can reduce comparison, support beginners, and help experienced runners reconnect with effort, intuition, and presence, without abandoning progress. This episode invites you to step out of evaluation mode and let training become a relationship with your body, not an exam. In this episode: What it means to run by time instead of miles Why high-achieving women often turn running into another place to self-evaluate How time-based running supports beginner runners Why experienced runners benefit from stepping away from constant metrics How effort-based running improves sustainability and enjoyment Simple ways to include time-based runs in your training Who is this episode for? Ep 69: Running with Asthma - What Every Runner Needs to Know to Breathe Easier, with Dr. Gina Dapul-Hidalgo & Dr. Michelle Quirk

Asthma is common among runners, yet it’s often misunderstood, minimized, or feared. In this episode of the Mindful Marathon Podcast, I’m joined by board-certified allergist Dr. Gina Dapul-Hidalgo to break down what asthma really means for runners and how athletes can train safely, confidently, and successfully. We discuss the physiology of asthma and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, common symptoms runners often normalize, and what “well-controlled asthma” actually looks like in real life. Dr. Gina shares practical guidance on training adaptations, inhaler use, identifying red flags, and why an individualized asthma action plan is essential for active runners. We also explore the mental and emotional side of asthma: fear, trust, and how past flare-ups can shape an athlete’s relationship with their body. This is a reassuring, empowering conversation for runners with asthma, and the coaches, clinicians, and supporters who care for them. Dr. Dapul-Hidalgo, affectionately known as Dr. Gina is a board-certified adult and pediatric allergist and the founder and CEO of the Family Center for Allergy and Asthma in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Ep 60: Fueling for Performance - Nourishing the Runner's Body & Mind, with Sarah Skobeloff

In this episode of the Mindful Marathon Podcast, Coach Michelle welcomes Sarah Skobeloff, a registered dietitian specializing in sports performance and ADHD, for a conversation that every runner needs to hear. Together, they unpack what it truly means to fuel for performance, and how common diet culture messages can hold us back from running and feeling our best. They dive into the science and mindfulness behind proper nutrition for endurance training, and how intentional meal planning can make the difference between burnout and balance. You’ll also hear how under-fueling (often unintentionally) can contribute to fatigue, poor recovery, and increased risk of injury. Michelle and Sarah tackle a number of hot topics including: Why carbs are essential for women runners (and why “cutting carbs” often leads to fatigue and injury) The downside of fasted cardio and “training for fat burn” How focusing only on protein can leave you under-fueled The problem with trying to train for a race while losing weight How to approach nutrition without guilt or rigidity They also explore the unique challenges women physicians face,  from unpredictable schedules to perfectionism, and how a mindful, flexible approach to fueling can help you feel more energized, resilient, and at peace with your body. Whether you’re training for your next race or simply trying to find balance amid a busy call schedule, this conversation will remind you that fueling your body well is not indulgent. It’s essential self-care. Ep 56: Movement & Rest - Creating a Prescription that Works for You

In this episode of the podcast, I’m sharing reflections from my recent Mindful Movement Retreat, where a small group of incredible women physicians stepped away from their busy lives to exhale, rest, and reconnect with themselves. We jogged and walked by the beach, practiced yoga, experienced a sound bowl session and yoga nidra, and most importantly, gave ourselves permission to pause. So often we’re told to push harder, do more, and stay on the treadmill (literally and figuratively). But sustainable health and joy come from balancing movement with intentional rest. In this episode, we’ll explore: Why rest is just as vital as movement for performance, health, and self-care How to notice when you need to slow down, and how to actually do it Simple reflection prompts you can use to design your own “movement + rest” prescription If you’ve ever struggled to find that balance, this episode will give you a gentler, more mindful way forward. You’ll learn: Why running in the heat feels harder and how your body works to cool you down When and what to wear to stay cool and protected How to hydrate before, during, and after your runs (including how to estimate your sweat rate) The signs of heat-related illness, and when it’s time to stop or seek help What heat acclimatization actually does in your body (and why it makes your fall races feel easier!) Why it’s okay to slow down and how to train smart by effort, not pace Every summer mile builds mental strength. You’ve got this! What’s one thing you’re going to try on your next run? DM me or email your questions about running in the heat. I’d love to feature them in a future episode. And if you enjoyed this episode, I’d be so grateful if you left a quick review. It helps more runners find the show and join our mindful running community. *** To work with Coach Michelle, head to her website and click on Contact Me: https://www.mindful-marathon.com Learn more about the Mindful Movement Retreat at https://www.mindful-marathon.com/capemayretreat and use discount code PODCAST100 for $100 off Follow Mindful Marathon on Social Media: https://www.instagram.com/Mindful.Marathon https://www.facebook.com/MindfulMarathon *** The information contained in this podcast is intended to serve as educational information and is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
