In August of 1990, 21-year-old North Carolina resident Andy Atkinson had moved to Houston, Texas to stay with his grandmother for the summer. While there, he met a young woman named Cheryl Henry and the two began dating. When they didn't return home after a night out, their family members grew worried. They were discovered murdered the next day in a secluded area known for being a Lovers Lane. Investigators wondered if the murders were related to a series of other crimes that had taken place within the vicinity. Despite numerous tips, they didn't receive a solid lead until a DNA sample tied to another case helped pinpoint the killer 36 years later. In the summer of 2004, Vince Gilmer, a physician in Western North Carolina, murdered his 60-year-old father and left his body on the side of a country road in Virginia. When Dr. Benjamin Gilmer (no relation) arrived at Vince's former clinic to accept a new job, he began hearing stories about the former Dr. Gilmer. The now-incarcerated country doctor didn't seem like the type who would have committed a violent crime, especially against a family member, and Benjamin had questions. He shared what he learned about what was really ailing Vince Gilmer on NPR and a book he published in 2024. Renee shares Vince's medical diagnosis and where he is today. On May 25, 1989, 10-year-old Cora Lee Hamby left her home in Statesville and walked to a nearby grocery store to buy candy. She never made it home, and her deceased body was discovered a few days later on the shores of Lake Norman. Eyewitnesses said they saw Cora get into a car with three adults in the parking lot of the grocery store. Investigators zeroed in on a suspect in town, but he was never officially charged with the murder. On April 26, 2005, Raven Abaroa returned home from a recreational soccer game to find his 25-year-old wife, Janet, murdered in their home. Their six-month-old infant son was unharmed in a nearby bedroom. In the summer of 2004, an inmate in prison for armed robbery and kidnapping escaped from the Brown Creek Correctional Institution in Anson County. Authorities searched the surrounding area and Charlotte, but there was no sign of "The Roofman" for months, until a masked robber attempted to rob employees at a Toys R Us on Independence Boulevard in Charlotte. On the afternoon of Oct. 13, 2022, Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications received word of an active shooter on the streets of the Hedingham neighborhood in Raleigh. Within a few hours, five people were dead, including an off-duty police officer. The most disturbing detail was the age of the shooter--he was a 15-year-old local high school student who had begun his rampage by murdering his older brother. When North Carolina resident Stacy Hawks learned about this unsolved murder in her community, she used her research to explore the possibilities of what happened to the young woman in her historical fiction novel, "Dividing Ridge."
