Patrick Burris was a lifelong offender who never should have been released from prison. When he was unable to adjust to life outside of incarceration, he went on a murderous killing spree in Gaffney in 2009. On May 25, 1989, 10-year-old Cora Lee Hamby left her home in Statesville and walked to a nearby grocery store to buy candy. She never made it home, and her deceased body was discovered a few days later on the shores of Lake Norman. Eyewitnesses said they saw Cora get into a car with three adults in the parking lot of the grocery store. Investigators zeroed in on a suspect in town, but he was never officially charged with the murder. When 36-year-old Gayle McCaffrey went missing from West Ashley, South Carolina in 2012, her family knew she wouldn't have willingly abandoned her children. Her husband Bob's description of an argument beteen the couple that night also concerned them and investigators. While Bob McCaffrey served time for obstruction of justice charges related to his wife's disappearance, he never stood trial for murder as her body was never found. Now, he's been arrested for a 1990 cold case in New Jersey, where a 27-year-old woman went missing from her home and was later found murdered. On April 26, 2005, Raven Abaroa returned home from a recreational soccer game to find his 25-year-old wife, Janet, murdered in their home. Their six-month-old infant son was unharmed in a nearby bedroom. Police quickly announced they didn't think the murder was a random attack, and Raven Abaroa's misdeeds as an employee and a husband would lead to his arrest for murder five years later. In the summer of 2004, an inmate in prison for armed robbery and kidnapping escaped from the Brown Creek Correctional Institution in Anson County. Authorities searched the surrounding area and Charlotte, but there was no sign of "The Roofman" for months, until a masked robber attempted to rob employees at a Toys R Us on Independence Boulevard in Charlotte. There, police discovered Jeffrey Manchester had been living undetected among the community for more than six months. When North Carolina resident Stacy Hawks learned about this unsolved murder in her community, she used her research to explore the possibilities of what happened to the young woman in her historical fiction novel, "Dividing Ridge."
