    Full Interview with David Moscrop

David was one of the first person’s I thought of when I thought about making Man V/s Machine because I wanted someone to talk about the weird political climate that was happening online and he didn’t disappoint. In this interview we talk about how we started on the internet since we’re about similar ages, as well as how gender plays into how we think about politics, as well as thinking about how we read the news. You can find his work here at https://www.davidmoscrop.com/ This podcast cannot be done without the support of Next Gen Men, which you can support by subscribing to our online community at nextgenmen.ca/joinYou can also subscribe to the Substack at https://theferdinand.substack.com/

Episode 5: The Age of Distortion (w/ David Moscrop)

There’s a common sentence you hear that the online world is not real. That whatever happens in social media is not real. This is factually incorrect, everything that happens online is part of the world world whether we like it or not. and if we take his statement at face value, this can be dangerous. Our social lives revolve around the technology we have, s well as our business, our careers, our families, and the shape of what we think about the world. All of it revolves around what happens online. This can lead to healthy communities or dangerous ideas. There’s a blend here. A distortion.David Moscrop, political commentator and writer of the book "Too Dumb for Democracy" is here to help us through the muck. Research: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S2352250X1930065Xhttps://dourish.com/classes/readings/Slater-SocialRelationshipsIdentity.pdfhttps://www.cbc.ca/news/world/photoshop-ai-generated-images-1.6859130https://arstechnica.com/staff/2016/12/stop-pretending-theres-a-difference-between-online-and-real-life/(Critical Ignoring Paper  -https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/09637214221121570 , https://theconversation.com/when-critical-thinking-isnt-enough-to-beat-information-overload-we-need-to-learn-critical-ignoring-198549) HBR - Social Media explained - https://hbr.org/2011/06/secrets-of-social-media-reveal (Why do people post)https://everyonesocial.com/blog/the-psychology-of-how-and-why-we-share/https://archive.ph/Q7Dn6https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7588715/David Moscrop: https://www.davidmoscrop.com/p/how-to-read-the-news This podcast cannot be done without the support of Next Gen Men, which you can support by subscribing to our online community at nextgenmen.ca/joinYou can also subscribe to the Substack at https://theferdinand.substack.com/

Episode 4 - The Group Chat - Is it all toxic or is it healthy?

When we think of an all male group chat, does your mind wander to places of toxicity, misogyny and overall bad behavior? or does it go to a place where people find a community, where guys lift each other up, and police their language?Well it can be both.Let’s explore how the group chat is today’s digital third place, and how men and boys have found toxicity or a healthy community in themRESEARCH: https://slate.com/human-interest/2023/05/male-mental-health-mens-group-chats.htmlhttps://www.reddit.com/r/MensLib/comments/135u9pv/the_unexpected_wholesomeness_of_the_male_group/ (MensLib reddit) https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Constance-Steinkuehler/publication/228622890_Digital_literacies_for_the_disengaged_Creating_after_school_contexts_to_support_boys%27_game-based_literacy_skills/links/5b80ec84a6fdcc5f8b65944d/Digital-literacies-for-the-disengaged-Creating-after-school-contexts-to-support-boys-game-based-literacy-skills.pdfhttps://d1wqtxts1xzle7.cloudfront.net/38676179/Volume_2__Issue_2_Full_Issue.pdf?1441473367=&response-content-disposition=inline%3B+filename%3DVolume_2_Issue_2_September_2015.pdf&Expires=1708493753&Signature=HOfLxSvmQYZSDuiSJ1TdVaAEurSvJ8KY9Xhhs4SA1HVGqT4gAzu~Tws3if31EIubAuyl7WLz62YrvCGEHtfIScgebKu8ivoE3mT~5EkfFKCmGUyhy-ziPBcAE6BRz-B9iKnxo9mh3sdnfjRdt1Mfw5Dw2-8cJk277WwjMvE0t8UM7nD0E4ZtaWy0uu-a1X~~ZXySZ4vEcCgODh2cABKGInzoWSeVPdsrluV-vR6o-fONsRQ6C-7hbhsrxPFexGOcyXx2NUi2CA36wti3fZ1oIdLyAum6BBF1LsjRlRtcFCbp9~6c9s4M1h9b57sq8KhaDNBy1pVBj3DKt8ZdS0DcPA__&Key-Pair-Id=APKAJLOHF5GGSLRBV4ZA#page=9https://www.insidehook.com/internet/10-things-to-start-doing-differently-in-your-all-male-group-chats https://thetab.com/uk/2021/02/19/toxic-male-group-chats-190149https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2lPptNghyIhttps://www.lexology.com/library/detail.aspx?g=46677c8e-7bd0-4210-a297-ba0cd0ffe624https://www.tprochnow.com/project/onlinegaming/  This podcast cannot be done without the support of Next Gen Men, which you can support by subscribing to our online community at nextgenmen.ca/joinYou can also subscribe to the Substack at https://theferdinand.substack.com/

Bonus Episode: Iliana Depounti and AI Companion Bots

Today on Modern Manhood, a bonus episode for you with Iliana Depounti who is a researcher out of the University of Loughborough. She was one of the main writers of the research around Replika, an AI companion chat bot. Ever since I thought about doing a season on tech I wanted to do an episode on AI companionship, because it’s so god darn interesting in regards to how people, especially guys operate on the internet. And to the broader themes of relationships in general. And I had so many questions for Iliana, and so many quotes that I could’ve put in the episode. So this is the reason why I wanted to release the full interview.  We not only go through Replika, but the different tropes the user liked, also why people may be interested in using the AI bot, and what women liked from their AI companion bot. So enjoy my conversation with Iliana Depounti, on Modern Manhood: Man v/s Machine This podcast cannot be done without the support of Next Gen Men, which you can support by subscribing to our online community at nextgenmen.ca/joinYou can also subscribe to the Substack at https://theferdinand.substack.com/

Full interview w/ Paris Marx - Bonus Episode

On today’s Modern Manhood, it’s a bonus episode that we’ll do after each regular episode of the season, where we’ll release most of the interview with our guest from the episode. This time it’s with Paris Marx. Paris is a Canadian based writer, podcaster, and leftist opinion maker, who I first heard of from his podcast “Tech Won’t Save Us.” Right now he runs the newsletter “Disconnect.” Paris has always been a person with a critical eye on the world of tech news, understanding that not every promise of rainbows and sunshine coming from the optimists of tech comes to pass. And if it does, it usually comes at the expense of other people, ideas, and culture. On this conversation, we'll talk about Elon Musk, Uber, AI, and all the tech bros. Bonus - Reddit's Mens Lib Discussion

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new season of Modern Manhood, where we're going to go through important sections of history and talk about the men's movements that were important during those times. However before we do that, I wanted to share a discussion I did back in April with the awesome people in Reddit's Men's Lib. There's a lot of people who joined and asked questions which not only talks about the history of the men's movement, but of masculinity in it's own modern discourse. It was a great discussion and I hope you enjoy it. And why is it important to keep vigilant. Plus we also talk about sports and why cheering for any type of sports can seem like a non ethical breach. Episode 5: Failing at Sex Ed

No body that I know had a good first Sex Ed talk. How did we as a society mess this up so much? How did we take a very fundamental part of human life, our sexuality, and teach it like we were scared of it. Or treat it like a side dressing when in many cases it’s the main meal. This is especially true for young men, who at about the age of 10 are starting to think about their own sexuality. We break this down with experts Shafia Zaloom and Dr David Bell. Cold Takes Talks The MET Gala, AOC, and Men's Fashion

The MetGala happened and we saw the looks the controversy, the dresses and the styles. Looking at this event, it reminds us of the conversations we had in the Inner Circle about fashion, about pink shoes, and dresses, and maybe how men's fashion (and fashion in general) can be restrictive. Or is it? What makes it restrictive? Is this a fashion problem or a men's problem? Or both? Let's dig in to the controversies (AOC, Cara Delavigne), the fashion, and the world around us. Bonus Episode: The Parents of Modern Manhood

The last few episodes of Modern Manhood has focused a lot around how young children are. So I knew to make these last few episodes we had to get a lot of the voices of parents, people who are excited to be expecting children, or are in the midst of parenting. And of course they had some amazing insights, and we got a lot of tape. So much so that we had to cut a lot of it for our main episodes, but I knew it was too good to never be revealed. So this an episode all about some of the amazing pieces of knowledge like co-parenting, online life, gay couples parenting, and the age old question, do I even want kids? The Way of the Superior Sham: The Problem of the Spiritualization of Masculinity

Spiritualists and spiritualist groups will have their say in most of men's conversations. Groups who use spiritual practices and wildman Jungian archetypes to try to solve this notion of the broken man. We give them too leeway, and we don’t critique them enough. Because these groups for decades have been defending an idea of gender essentialism and use ideas that have been shown to be ideologically biased, sexist, and naive of what we think of as the modern man.
