The Homeschool Library You Already Own

I’m the mother of 15, so I’ve never had time to mess around or extra money laying around just waiting to be spent on flashy books that may never be used.(I think I see you nodding.)So, I got a little excited years ago when I finally decided to go back to the “old paths”; to the old times when real education happened in one-room school houses (which closely resembled our own motley crew of assorted children). And the excitement has never waned, so if I seem a little zealous in this post, I beg your pardon in advance! Here goes:If you are able to view this post on a computer, a tablet, or a phone, then you have access to a complete homeschool curriculum you don’t have to wait for and may not have to pay for.Seriously, you and your children can begin experiencing an upgrade to excellent education starting TODAY!In this post I am going to be discussing with you the specific ways you can use modern materials and technology of today with the most amazing materials of the past to create the ultimate learning plan for you and your children.👉 Visit momdelights.com  Here's the link to the planner on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3X8RAcR  I'm trying out Substack. Picking and Choosing History Curriculum

Why do some history books make children come alive with curiosity… while others feel like lifeless drudgery that everyone forgets five minutes later?Today we are going to talk about what actually makes a history resource worth your time. Not the hype. Not the endless teacher guides and activity books. Not the pressure to “cover everything.”Just the simple elements that make history meaningful, memorable, and fascinating.I’m going to share some of my favorite homeschool history resources—from textbooks and reference books to living books, documentaries, lectures, and fascinating rabbit trails—and also explain why some resources work beautifully while others quietly kill a child’s interest in learning. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by all the curriculum choices out there, or wondered how to make history come alive in your homeschool without burnout, I think this conversation will encourage you tremendously. There are so many resources to choose from out there! Here is my humble attempt to cull the best that I know of, but I know many of you have also come across some amazing ones. Please feel free to share in the comments below.I think this time we will focus on everything but historical fiction, which will take some time, and next time we will focus on historical fiction and all the ways you can go about using it.Before I begin, I want to emphasize that, as you are doing your research for materials, don’t be lured in by the hype!Like I always try and emphasize, learning should be simple. Most curriculum has been geared first for the classroom, then modified slightly in an attempt to be of service to homeschoolers. While we appreciate this accommodation, I have found most teacher’s texts, answer books, and activity books to be unnecessary. If you apply these simple ideas to whatever you are studying, you won’t need to bother with all the extras:* Reading aloud and/or self reading* Discussion* Rabbit trailing* Notebooking* Other activities as they come along naturally and organicallyHere is a quick list that I hope will spark your creativity.First, let’s talk about reference books. These are sometimes referred to as “spines,” because they give structure as we go about enjoying gaining knowledge about our world, whether past or present. You could say these books add in the “Chronos” (and the ones with the Biblical worldview even include some of the Kairos). Here are just a few:* A Manual of Ancient History by M. E. Thalheimer. This book was originally written in 1872, before all the craziness had completely set in. It includes the Biblical narrative along-side with the rest of the events of world history, all the way up through Roman history. It is pretty dry reading, but a great reference for adding understanding on different topics.* Textbooks from major Christian homeschool publishers. These are great because they not only give you a spine to help draw all things together, they also are written from a Christian perspective. My advice is to purchase these second-hand, since you will not be needing any of the answers or teacher’s directions (unless you want to have them). Also, if you get the high school level books, they will be a better reference and include more information. Here is a short list of publishers and titles which seem to be pretty reliable:* Streams of Civilization books 1 and 2. This is a great treatment of the subject and you can find older versions easily. Also, these books include some information on more modern history as well.* Abeka and Bob Jones University have come up with some interesting high school history textbooks that you can purchase used quite easily. These also, depending on the edition, can cover information on the 21st century.* Master Books has some good series, although they haven’t been out long enough to be bought at a less expensive price.3. Other reference books. These are not always from a Biblical perspective, but they do add interesting illustrations, maps, and other information into the mix. I know there are about a million of these out there, so I will only list a few that I have actual experience with:* DK history books and atlases (affiliate)* Usborne history books (affiliate)* National Geographic histories and atlases (affiliate)Now let’s talk about Charlotte Mason “living book” history narrations. These are the ones which follow the Chronos but include the Kairos in an engaging narrative fashion.1. The Story of the World series. I have to mention this one because it is so popular, but it does not receive my endorsement. I haven’t used these books myself, but my daughter, Rebekkah, has with her children . She tells me they contain mistakes and biased viewpoints that are not necessarily Christian at all. Here is the opinion of one of my listeners on this series:We couldn’t get through the first book. My kids felt it was ‘yucky’ and disturbing with the emphasis on legends and myths and Egyptology. Very ‘classical’ with emphasis on all things Greek. Missed SO much of creation account, timeline from Adam to flood, Noah’s sons and their tribes, Tower of Babel and the turning y she migration of different people groups, etc. Like reading a public-school textbook with a meager smattering of Biblical accounts, which were squished right next to cultural myths. Blah(This is purely opinion, so if you have found a way to make these books work, no judgement here.)2. Charles C. Coffin books. We have covered these in previous posts, but I believe they are worth a mention here. All from a positive, Christian perspective, and all written in an engaging, narrative manner.3. The Light and the Glory (affiliate) and From Sea to Shining Sea. These are so interesting they had me engaged for a number of days when I purchased them. This is the thoroughly Christian history of the United States you always wanted to know, but could never find a good source for. Written in a narrative manner, it may be above the heads of your younger children, but worth the read for middle school level and above.4. This Country of Ours and other books by H. E. Marshall. These are overviews which were written when it wasn’t against the rules to mention God and faith. They would also be Charlotte Mason-approved.5. The Mystery of History (affiliate). This is the series I would suggest could replace The Story of the World. The books themselves are quite in demand, so there aren’t any really cheap ones out there. One thing to keep in mind is that you won’t need the extra helps and activities, which will reduce the cost of using these materials. Also, this series is chronological as opposed to thematic, meaning you won’t find a section dedicated just to Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome, as the narrative includes the overlap between the two, and also with other cultures along the way.6. Laurie White’s King Alfred’s English (affiliate). This is a thin book, but one of the most interesting history books my children and I have ever enjoyed together. It is basically a history of the English language, which doesn’t only help with history itself, but also with language, as it gives us the reasons why English is both easier and more difficult than other world languages. She also has a website with all sorts of printables and other resources called The Shorter Word.Next, let’s talk about the “fun” resources and extra stuff that we can add into the mix. I am going to put in just a few, but I know you mommies out there have plenty more!* Talks, website, etc. From William Federer. Mr. Federer is a dear Christian man who has spent most of his life studying and analyzing history from a Biblical view point. His lectures are so chock full of enlightening information that you have to listen to them a number of times to catch it all. His books are also interesting to read and share.* Compass Classroom. This is a homeschool curriculum company which houses numerous of its history lectures right here on YouTube, and you can access them for free.* How the States God Their Shapes (affiliate). This is a series done around 2011 that looks at US history from a different angle, but covers a lot of fascinating information. You can find a cropped version for free on YouTube, you can purchase the set, or you can watch it where it is currently streaming.* The Greatest Stories Never Told (affiliate) series by Rick Breyer. Our children found these at the library and they were hooked! I think in some ways these silly books are what lit the fire in them to know more about history. I don’t appreciate the bias or everything that is shared in these, but the stories shared certainly pique one’s interest in finding out more!* Answers in Genesis. I know we tend to think of this ministry as dealing with creation science, but I have found it is replete with all sorts of history as well, and always from a Biblical perspective. They offer most of their books free to read online, as well, which is a real boon.* Wall Builders. The founding father-son pair of this ministry, David and Tim Barton, say they have the largest private collection of original documents and other articles from the founding of our country in the United States. They also have their own channel here on YouTube where they present not only American History from a Biblical perspective, but commentary on current events, political movements, etc.* Christian History Magazine. This is such an amazing resource! It is basically a monthly magazine that runs entirely on donations, and which you can access freely online. The work is well-researched and written and the illustrations and layout are amazing. In the past I was able to download, print, and bind a number of the issues for use in our homeschooling. Among our favorites are issues on JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis, but there are so many more!* How the Church Fostered Science and Technology* Plagues and Epidemics (from 2020)* Faith in Foxholes* Francis Asbury; Pioneer of Methodism* CharlemagneAnd on and on...Now, that’s a lot of information! I’m going to be sharing more on different types of novels, etc. in my next post, so be ready! This is a public episode. The Vintage History Book That Changed My Mind

If you and your children hate history, I've got a remedy! There is a book that will rewire your thinking and give you a reason to love the subject as you never have before: The Story of Liberty by Charles C. Coffin. This is not a textbook (heaven forbid!); it's an engaging narrative which will draw you in and send you on lovely adventures with your children. Coffin will not only teach you events and people, he will teach you the reasons behind all of it, and how you can view the rest of history through a hopeful Biblical lens. Kids Ace Pop Culture but Miss Meaning; Here’s Why

Why do kids today know all the details of pop culture, but struggle to have interest in anything worthwhile? I believe it's because conventional schooling has stripped hope out of the curriculum. This is why young people spend so much time distracting themselves. They are trying to drown out the despondent voices in the backs of their minds. In this episode, we’re diving into the third pillar of excellent education: content—and why it must be rooted in truth, purpose, and hope if it’s going to nourish the hearts and minds of our children. This is part of our ongoing series on the Four Pillars of Excellent Education: 1. Gaining favor with God and man 2. The tools and skills of learning 3. Content (what we cover today) 4. Application If we get this third pillar wrong, everything else begins to collapse. But when we restore it, we give our children something the world cannot offer: Hope. In upcoming episodes, we’ll begin getting practical—sharing simple, proven ways to help you and your children explore history, science, and the arts with depth, joy, and lasting meaning.👉 Visit momdelights.com  Here's the link to the planner on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3X8RAcR  I'm trying out Substack. Mastering Math Without Fear

Based on a widely-circulated graduation test from 1895, children of the past routinely mastered arithmetic without overwhelm, expensive curriculum, or years of frustration. So what changed? In this episode we break down a radically simple, time-tested approach to teaching math that actually works which I've discovered teaching our 15 children. You’ll discover why waiting for readiness matters, how basic arithmetic can be learned faster than you think, and how to replace confusion with clarity using practical, proven methods. If math in your homeschool has felt heavy, complicated, or discouraging—this might completely change your perspective. Our Vintage Reading Program

So much harm has been done through our modern educational system. So many people are not being taught the basics. Even students who graduate with honors have trouble comprehending texts beyond the seventh-grade level. Why is this?Because our education system has been gradually dumbing us all down, and it has been deliberate. But we don’t have to become silenced victims; we can take things into our own hands and take part in the current learning revival right in the comfort of our own homes.Today I would like to share some specific ways I discovered to take back the minds of our children by concentrating on the basic skills of reading and writing so they will be prepared for any and all other learning.👉 Visit momdelights.com  Here's the link to the planner on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3X8RAcR  I'm trying out Substack. Going Back to Simple Education For a Strong Homeschool Foundation

In 2025, the United States spent 6 percent of the Gross Domestic Product on education. Since the total GDP was 30.62 trillion dollars, that means the amount we laid out for education in America was a whopping $1,837,280,000,000! (That’s a lot of paychecks for a lot of people needing to make their mortgage payments, which means this has become a large part of our economy.)Schooling in America not only eats up money, it eats up time. It takes six to eight hours a day for 180 days a year, for 13 or more years. And yet, Johnny still can’t read or write. We’re not spending money on an education system; we’re funding an indoctrination system bent on stripping us of our mores and dumbing us down. But it wasn’t always this way. There was a time when people demanded excellent education because they were heavily invested in the outcome of their communities and their government. Here is the link to the playlist:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stZi7zjI194&list=PLxbcoXQo3QiwDyqe_-ydHgglei-dukGxb&index=2👉 Visit momdelights.com  Here's the link to the planner on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3X8RAcR  I'm trying out Substack. Why I Decided to Put God First

This world does not need more educated idiots. What is an “educated idiot” you ask?In a sense specific to our age, it is someone who jumps through all the academic hoops to become “approved” by globalist culture so they can go on to support the work of internationalism. In a more general sense, it is a person who grows up to accept and promote the lie that the intellect is supreme over all other portions of living beings (and it is often used as the deciding factor for sentience; as in, “I think, therefore I am”).When I was a little girl, this was represented in movies and TV shows by the super-evolved alien with a huge head as big as a beach ball, only uglier.Supposedly, the heads of all advanced aliens grew so huge because they were used more; as in how a muscle gets bigger when it is exercised more.It was disturbing enough to cause nightmares.I’m sorry folks, but I’m not raising that.My children will be capable of thinking clearly and solving complex problems, not because I trained them to use their minds more, but because their minds were renewed along with the rest of their soul as a part of their body, soul, and spirit.Yes, I’m talking here about the renewal that happens when we meditate on God’s Word with minds which have been transformed by being born again of the Spirit.----------------------------👉 Visit momdelights.com  Here's the link to the planner on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3X8RAcR  I'm trying out Substack. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit momdelights.substack.com  Lately, we’ve been discussing how to have your best homeschool year yet, and we’ve been concentrating on the four pillars of learning, which are:* Gaining favor with God and man* The tools and skills of learning (reading, writing, arithmetic, etc.)* Content (history, science and the like)* Application of all of the above in real lifeToday, specifically, we are talking about the first pillar: Gaining Favor with God and Man.In case you were wondering where I came up with this title for the first pillar, it’s from the description of how Jesus grew up:And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.Luke 2:52_______________I just can’t help it. Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to me, and God’s Word is the most profound, life-changing book I have ever come across. And Jesus is not only the most important person in my life; He is the most important person in history. On February 4, 2020, a man by the name of J. Warner Wallace conducted a Google Books search listing the persons in history with the most books written about them. Here are the top 10 results:* Jesus Christ (109,000,000)* George Washington ( 58,400,000)* Plato (27, 800,000)* Aristotle (21,000,000)* John Milton (20,800,000)* 6. William Shakespeare (18,700,000)* Charles Dickens (16,200,000)* Buddha (13,300,000/Martin Luther (13,300,000)* Gandhi (12,600,000)* Abraham Lincoln (9,340,000)But there is more. The arrival of Jesus on this earth has been the pivotal event on which we’ve decided to count history; with all years before that counting down to His appearance, and all years since counting forward. The abbreviation B.C. stands for “Before Christ,” and the abbreviation A. D. stands for Anno Domini, directly translated as “Year of our Lord,” indicating Jesus’ ruling as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.(Of course, social engineers and academics couldn’t allow this, so they have tried to rename both as “Before Common Era and Common Era—but we all know that’s a bunch of baloney. What does “Common Era” denote, anyways? Does anyone know? Does anyone even care to investigate?)Jesus Christ is not only the most written about figure in the history of the world, He is also the most portrayed in art, most discussed, and most argued over.Even though He never traveled more than 70 miles from where He was born; even though He never authored a single paper or book; He is the most influential person in all of history. And the Bible is the most quoted book in all the literature of the world. It also happens to be the most sold in the world as well.Even according to msm.com, a news agency not considered to be supportive of Christianity, the Bible is considered, “the foundation of Western Literary Consciousness.”Since all of this is true, why don’t we consider of paramount importance to study the Bible and to connect with the Author of life?I think it is because we have falsely believed we could separate knowledge from insight. You know, like Spock on Star Trek. Supposedly, he and other Vulcans were able to separate themselves from all emotion so that they could become totally “logical.”(As they said over and over in Dragnet, “Just the facts, ma’am.”)But facts without insight are not only dead; they are destructive.Let’s look at this from a Biblical perspective. In the Old Testament Hebrew, the word for insight is the same as the word for knowledge; the two ideas are inseparable from each other. When we read of Solomon’s insight for judging between the two harlots who were arguing over an infant, the same word is used as when God gave artisans the ability to craft items for the tabernacle, or when Solomon know all about the different creatures and trees of the natural world. It’s also the same word used for “wisdom” in the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. But this changes in the New Testament. In passages such as Romans 11:33, we see there is a different word for the two:O, the depth of the richesof the wisdom and knowledge of God!How unsearchable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways! The two words here are:Sophia: InsightAndGnosis: Knowledge. We see here there are two components, but both are present with God in His thinking. And this is what we want to promote in the lives of our children. There is no such thing as education that is without some sort of insight; even if that insight is devilish in its origin. No school on earth, no matter how “secular” can claim to be without prejudice. Even the exclusion of God in the curriculum is a philosophical bias, because it implies the underlying idea that God has nothing to do with anything of consequence in this life. When I first started out homeschooling, I wanted this to be the emphasis, but there were times when it was lost in all of our efforts to make sure we were covering all the areas of knowledge. Instead of being in the place of pre-eminence, it was simply a quick acknowledgement on our way to the better stuff.I hope this little talk today will help keep you from making the same mistake. Now, just how do we go about this? Do we need to buy some more curriculum, maybe subscribe to an online course or two?Well, you could certainly do that, but I don’t think it’s necessary.Remember, the best lessons go straight to the heart of the matter. It’s the same with inculcating the bible and knowledge of God into the hearts of children. The best, most direct way to learn about Him is to go straight to the Bible. Even young children can understand it—it’s truly amazing how open their hearts and minds are to the truth of God.You don’t have to do anything elaborate; simply read it aloud and talk about it. You can start with Genesis in the Old Testament, and Mark in the New.And don’t worry about things being broken up in chapter and verse. Read it as the narrative it is, with natural breaks accordingly.I know many of us don’t feel comfortable doing this, because we aren’t that familiar with the Bible ourselves. Don’t let this deter you! You will be learning right along with your children. When you come across something you don’t quite understand, just pause at that place and look it up together.* Also, enjoy looking into the different aspects of each passage, such as the author, the setting, etc.* If you like, you could add a notebooking page, perhaps with a key verse for emphasis or to memorize. You could require some copywork as well. As our children aged we required a whole passage to be copied daily.* You could also include something visual, as in some sort of art or watching a movie on a particular story.* If you are going through one of the wisdom books or some of the sayings of Jesus, you could do some role-playing and act out how to put the Word of God into daily practice. One example of this would be how to solve conflicts that often arise in sibling relationships according to the Golden Rule. We’ve had a lot of fun with this over the years as our children know how to ham it up. I’ve learned laughter to be one of the best aids in learning! There are also good books you could add into this mix. Over the years my husband and I have read aloud tomes such as Hinds Feet on High Places, Pilgrim’s Progress, various Christian biographies, and devotional works such as Brother Lawrence’s Practicing the Presence of God.We have also enjoyed obeying what the scripture says about “singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs” by singing hymns and other worship songs together a cappella. Of course, there are karaoke tracks on YouTube for just about any hymn you would like to sing as well. And then there is prayer. It’s so easy to hurry this part up to get to the rest of the day, but this can be such a mistake. If we don’t include the Holy Spirit, we aren’t going to get the best from our learning time, so why not invite Him in the midst of it? Why not sit and meditate on God; to express worship through thanksgiving and open up the day for Him to lead and protect? It’s also a great place for everyone to lay their burdens down, as well as a place to practice charity by praying for those outside the family. And, even though we make a special space for concentrating on the things of God, we should never stop there. Our goal should be to develop the tendency to see all things in life through a Biblical lens.History, geography, science, literature; everything as coming from, through, and to Him.For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.Romans 11:36Now, I have to admit I didn’t always know how to do this, and I’m still discovering more and more ways.Thankfully, in our information age, you can find numerous helps in this regard. Answers in Genesis is a site I highly recommend you mine for loads of articles, books, etc. that will be a great help.Lastly, I would like to leave you with this thought.Gaining a good enough education to get through college doesn’t take that long. As I’ve demonstrated in previous podcasts on YouTube, it can be done in three or four years.K-12 in Three YearsInstead of chasing after the worldly goal of education to job to hopelessness, we need to be taking advantage of the short window we have of influence in our children’s lives and point them to God.Then, as they navigate throughout the rest of their journey on earth, they will have a “default” to fall back on. Even if they reject Jesus initially, at least they will know the truth about Him deep in their psyches. This will be the place they can return to when they finally realize all else is rubbish. But do this with caution. While we want to introduce our children to God and His ways, we must also act like our loving Father in heaven and never mandate or transgress their wills. We introduce and we encourage, but we respect their volition, just as God respects ours.Otherwise, we are not practicing Christianity, we are practicing paganism.I hope this has encouraged you today. I hope you are going to have some wonderful adventures in the Word of God beginning this next week ( I know many of you already do this in your homeschooling—share below some of the creative things you have done with your children—I know we’d love to hear about them!).Next, we’re going to go deeply into the second pillar of a good homeschooling education: the tools (or skills) of learning. I think you’ll love it! This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit momdelights.substack.com

The Lazy Genius Way to Homeschool

Did you know that the first compulsory education law, passed in 1852 in Massachusetts, only required children from the ages of eight to fourteen to be in school for 12 weeks in the year, with only six of these being sequential?Did you also know that students of that time enjoyed a literacy rate far above that of our modern day? We’ve been trained to believe educating takes six to eight concentrated hours of academics every day for five days every week for 40 weeks out of the year. That’s not true at all. No school in the world is actively “schooling” for eight hours each day. They are mostly shuffling for at least three or four of those hours; which includes getting to school, standing in lines, taking roll call, moving from class-to-class, taking bathroom breaks, and eating lunch. And even when children are sitting at their desks, they are not being intensely educated. There is a lot of waiting; on the teacher to be finished disciplining other students, waiting for teacher to answer a question, etc.I remember well that, even in my very good school overseas with a graduating class of only 70 or so, out of each 50-minute class period, only about 30 minutes (if that) were spent on the actual subject. That ends up being only three hours max of input out of that long day (not including homework, of course). There are reasons for all of this shuffling which have nothing to do with helping children become well-educated and prepared for life as whole persons; and you will find these reasons are well-documented if you care to investigate. (If you really want to go on a rabbit trail from here, look into the reasons why the German people so easily embraced the Nazi Party. You can begin with a man by the name of Fichte; but you’ll need to go both backwards and forwards from that point in order to get the whole picture. Ahem…).But YOU don’t have to “shuffle.” You and your children can actually LEARN things.I hope you will stick with me for the entire series.👉 Visit momdelights.com  Here's the link to the planner on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3X8RAcR  I'm trying out Substack. How to Get Free From Public School Tyranny

Homeschooling is so simple, simple, simple.Recently, I was reading an article which showcases this idea. It went into great detail discussing whether the Socratic or the Charlotte Mason method was better for teaching literature, and I couldn’t help but think, “Why can’t we simply enjoy the book?”And here’s the truth I hope will set you free: You don’t need scholarly stacks of books and courses to understand how to educate your child.I’ve homeschooled our 15 children for over 36 years and done it all—from boxed curriculum to “unschooling.”Along the way I’ve learned that a truly educated person needs:1. Good relationships with God and man.2. Tools to learn anything he needs to learn in life as necessary.3. A developed taste for higher things and being familiar with as much information as possible.4. The ability to analyze and apply all of the above for the furthering of God’s Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. With these goals in mind, a parent/teacher could use almost any materials (except for those methods which murder original thought, such as textbooking or drilling useless trivia into young brains without any context). What hampers us is when we start setting specific goals for specific ages and stages in a child’s growing years.Instead of saying, “This child should know this by this age,” it should be, “This child should be so delighted with God, His creation, and those He loves that he is learning every second he is awake.”With this sort of mindset, the “scope and sequence” of schooling becomes too narrow and limiting.A truly educated person should never feel hampered by the dictates of others—he is a child of the King, and His Father has given him ALL things freely to enjoy!I love the ideals of Charlotte Mason and her respect of the child as a person. But when I start hearing that there must be “form one requirements” I gracefully bow out.We seem to enjoy dissecting and attempting to capture the essence of every positive experience in our lives. Perhaps we learned this tendency due to our consumer culture. We want to take joy and bottle it, package it, and send it out in trucks for mass distribution. But that’s not how genuine joy works. Certainly not the joy of learning and discovery. As we witness it in nature every day, God’s plan is about order in uniqueness and variation. Yes, there are similarities and patterns, but the variables within each are astronomical. No program available, with all the quarterly requirements, is going to be able to meet the needs of my specific child. His goal, every day, is to become the best he can be for that day; to learn as much as he is able, as an expression of God’s love in his life and the life of others. This may include doing math to learn how to design bridges someday, or it may not.It might mean reading Homer to understand Western culture, or even to study ancient civilizations to showcase their accomplishments and examine their downfalls (but not to revere or emulate failed social experiments formed from out of God-less minds). It may also mean sitting and painting while listening to Bach or jazz, or even playing with the baby or a new puppy.--------------------------------------------I have asked myself over and over just why we have felt the need to gather information and cook it down until it has lost all of its taste, then can it and serve it to children as required nutrition.I think it can be synopsized like this:There was a time when information was scarce. Too few books and too few readers of those books. Those who had access to information began to feel elevated and superior. Then they decided the masses were incapable of handling information correctly, so they formulated ways of keeping information from them—such as locking it all up in Latin where only the most learned scholars could access it. This included the Bible. But the printing press could not be stopped. People were reading and translating all of the hoarded knowledge. Even the poorest person could unlock the treasures in books if they could read. So, the elite and the scholarly devised plans to thwart the masses in their pursuit of knowledge—both secular and sacred. They did this in two ways:1. They promoted drivel which kept people occupied while trapping them in lower thinking.2. They used education methods aimed at keeping people from comprehending the “higher” information, and they did this mostly by dumbing people down.Hence, compulsory education was born. As it evolved, its original purpose has evolved into the malevolent form we enjoy today. There is a poignant picture of our current education model; the hobbled horse.“Hobbling” is when a horse has its front legs tethered together. This allows it to wander around a small area and graze without allowing it the freedom to take off at a gallop. This is the goal of the compulsory school model. It hobbles people. It keeps them controllable. It forces them to feed in a limited space without the freedom to run and seek their own patch of green grass to graze in.In our modern era information is no longer kept locked up. It is instantly available to us at the touch of a screen or the command of our voice, and yet, there is an inherent resistance to taking advantage of it.It’s as if we are horses hobbled from the time we were ponies, and we just can’t imagine ever galloping full-out.My dad spent some time training horses (among all the other things he experienced as a Western-style renaissance man). One day I overheard a conversation he was having with an old cowboy. This cowboy enjoyed taming wild horses—ones he captured on army land which ran free and often hampered the combat training going on there. He and my dad discussed all the different methods of taming, with one being leading a wild horse into a few feet of water before being mounted. The water restricted the horse’s movement and put the rider more in charge. The entire conversation was unique and fascinating, but one part stuck out in particular.Neither of them thought domestic horses were very bright. Sure, they were more easily trained, but they were also timid and nervous. When confronted with the sudden unknown, they were nearly useless.Tamed wild horses, on the other hand, were confident. When confronted with the unfamiliar, they knew how to analyze and adapt. This made them more reliable and useful.Unfortunately, most of us who homeschool have grown up domesticated. We have spent most of our lives being fenced in and hobbled. We have the ability to break out in a gallop, but we are too timid to try. We’ve been trained to need the security of the fence and the rope. We keep to our place and await orders. But we were meant to gallop and run as fast as we want, with our tails flicking and our manes flowing. The only remedy is to look down and convince yourself that your legs are no longer tied together; you’re free. So, take advantage of that freedom! Dare to venture from the fence; dare to prance and trot and GALLOP!Go find your own pasture and enjoy nibbling on the sweet grass there. It’s OK to have a loose plan, but don’t be afraid to learn something, not because it’s on the list, but because it is interesting to you. Read books aloud and then talk about them together; maybe draw some pictures or go to the places the book mentions. You don’t have to do these things immediately—maybe days, or weeks, or years later.Develop tastes for grass in different pastures; different cultures and understandings. And as you find your freedom together with your children, they will develop the ability to think and adapt, so when they are tamed with the responsibilities of life, they will face difficulty with confidence and adapt accordingly—by God’s grace and for His pleasure.👉 Visit momdelights.com  Here's the link to the planner on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3X8RAcR  I'm trying out Substack. The Golden Key

You wake up feeling refreshed and ready for one of those instagram-perfect mornings where the house is quiet and you and your children sip tea and nibble on muffins by candle light while you read aloud Bible verses and poetry.Sigh.But then reality hits you.Your little ones come into your room whining, “Mommy, we’re hungry!” and you remember you FORGOT to buy more cereal and milk.So you scramble out of bed and waddle down to the kitchen, where you realize you’ll have to cook something. After rummaging about in the cupboards and fridge, you decide there are only enough ingredients available to make either pancakes or oatmeal, and pancakes appeal more to your stomach, so you get out a skillet and set it on the stove. While the oil is heating in the pan, you start mixing up your award-winning cinnamon flap jacks. As you pour your very first cake, your kids are standing around watching, their lips smacking with anticipation, and you feel a bit of triumph that you have been able to overcome and conquer in dire circumstances.Just then you realize—you don’t have a pancake flipper! There is that lovely pancake sizzling happily on the skillet, but in a second or two it will become hard and charred like a hockey puck if you don’t flip it—so the search is on.Everyone starts looking high and low, pulling out all the stuffings from the pantry and the cupboards, making more mess and increasing the chaos as you race against the clock.Just as you are about to give up hope, you remember that you put the spatula in the dishwasher the day before, but you forgot to turn it on.Frantically, you open the dishwasher and stand back as the smell overwhelms you for a moment. Then you reach in and grab the tool you need, slamming the door as quickly as possible. You reach for some dish washing liquid to scrub the spatula with, but realize the bottle is empty, so you have to scramble some more to find a full one.You look over to realize there is a bit of smoke rising from the pan—so you move the other dirty pans from off the other burners and place the pancake pan there so it will slow down the cooking process. Finally, your spatula is clean and dry, and you can flip the pancake, but, alas, the bottom is black, and so, instead of flipping it onto the plate of a desperately crying infant, you must throw it into the trash and start over again...with your children whining pitifully and pulling on your Pj’s.Does this sound familiar? If we’re honest, I think we’ve all been there are few times. It doesn’t matter how much enthusiasm you have, or how many wonderful purposes you’ve discovered, or what sorts of goals you have set; if you don’t have discipline, you will self-sabotage everything you set out to do.(Ask me how I know this!)____________________________________________________________________________We have been discussing what it means to have your best homeschool year yet, and we’ve covered these three elements so far:1. Enthusiasm2. Purposes3. Goals. If you’re new to Mom Delights, or you haven’t been around in a while, I believe it would bless you to go over the posts covering these elements, and if you are listening on YouTube the playlist will be linked in the notes.Today we are going to cover discipline of ourselves, our children, and how it affects our homeschooling lives. At the end we are going to talk about Charlotte Mason’s motto with her explanation, which I think you will find quite interesting. Now, to continue with the program…____________________________________________________________________________When you homeschool, there is so much freedom. You get to decide what you will learn, how you will learn it, in what order you will learn it.You get to tailor your learning to fit the needs of your child. You get to enjoy the natural flow of life. But, as with anything good, along with the enjoyment comes the responsibility. If you want breezy, happy days with your children, you must do the hard work of laying the foundation for them. You have to overcome your own tendencies to live out of control—in the ways you spend your money, the ways you eat, the ways you spend your time. You also have to train your children so they, also, can be in control of themselves. No, this is not psychology, this is simply common sense, and it comes out of the laws God placed in the earth from its very creation. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earthNow the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.Genesis 1: 1-2As you can see, God started with chaos, and out of it He made order. He is a God of order—as we witness in all of nature. It is a theme throughout His book that He sets all of nature in its place and keeps each element right where it should be; the stars in their courses, the seas and the waters under the earth from overflowing the earth. He has a purpose for all things, and it’s only when His creation steps out from His purposes that evil and sorrow result.Cancer is a good illustration of this. It is a process of good, healthy cells growing out of control and becoming chaotic, eventually sucking the life out of one’s entire body.Lack of discipline is a lot like that. When we are out of control, anything we try and do becomes chaotic, and it eventually sucks out the vitality of our existence. We can’t live well without discipline, and we can’t teach our children without it, either. The first place we apply discipline is with ourselves. Now, before you get out a club and start beating yourself over the head with self-loathing over your lack of self-discipline, I would like to share something with you.His grace. What is His grace? It is the ability He gives you to fulfill His requirements. It’s like pulling up to a road tollbooth and the attendant asking you for $3, and then the attendant paying the $3 for you.God requires us to be self-disciplined, but then He gives the ability to us. It’s included in the package of gifts we get when we walk by the Spirit:When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.Galatians 5:19-25It’s also mentioned here in 2 Timothy 1:7For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.It’s already in there; it’s part of you as a believer in Christ. You just have to activate it by living by renewing your mind and walking by the Spirit—by reforming your brain patterns via His Word and being sensitive to the voice of God as He leads you in your daily living. If you live this way, you may still have days when you must scramble to find something to eat for breakfast, but this will be a rare occurrence brought about by outside circumstances, not by your overindulgence or laziness.Instead of doom-scrolling, your time will be well-spent. You will feel better, you will look better, and you will be able to respond to the demands of your life more sweetly because you are not afraid of what could happen next. You will become like the Proverbs 31 woman:Strength and dignity are her clothing,And she smiles at the future.Proverbs 31:25As you become more disciplined, it will be easier to discipline your children. Instead of correcting in spurts, you will develop the strength of consistency.___________________________________________________________Now that we’ve dealt with you, let’s deal with your children. Now, I know there are many theories about child discipline floating around out there, and a lot of them have their merits. But most begin with bias, and come from some scientifically-controlled study done by clinicians with clip boards. Few, if any, ever consult with the soldiers in the trenches where the real work is being done, and even these are skewed by limited understanding and subjective observation. So, instead of trusting these, I have decided to do something radical; I have decided to consult the Owner’s Manual given to me by the Creator of us all—the Bible. This is what God has said about discipline:No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.Hebrews 12:11That’s what we want—in our desire to sit quietly in the morning with our children and sip tea, we are desiring the “peaceful harvest of right living,” but we have to go through the unpleasant times first. We have to plant the seeds of order if we want to live peacefully. And then there is the tilling and the weeding and the watering.Let’s consult with that entire section in Hebrews:And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said,“My child, don’t make light of the LORD’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you.For the LORD disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all. Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever? For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.Hebrews 12:5-12No matter what current trends may be, the Bible is clear; discipline is not optional when loving children, it is essential. And, it is unpleasant, even painful!I didn’t say this, God said it.While you and I may want to skip all the harshness and the work it takes to rear good children, these things are part of the whole picture.Children are born with certain base desires; they crave pleasure over pain. They don’t have any understanding how to regulate these base desires; they only know they want something and they will do whatever is necessary to get it. Sometimes they just want to want something without knowing what that something is.This is why they need parents. They need someone from the outside who can train them in knowing what is good and what is evil and how to seek one and avoid the other. They need to have someone tell them not to put scissors in the light socket, not to smack their baby sister, not to eat glue, not to cut their own hair, and a myriad of other things. And they need someone to be direct and straight with them; no hemming and hawing and making sure their feelings aren’t hurt.Because life is going to hurt, and they must be prepared to roll with the punches if they are going to survive.Your children need you to have a close relationship with them, yes, but not at the cost of keeping them from harm and teaching them how to control themselves.Proverbs is the place we find these precepts stated clearly:Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.Proverbs 13:24Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be party to his death.Proverbs 19:18A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.Proverbs 29:15Do not withhold discipline from a child; although you strike him with a rod, he will not die. / Strike him with a rod, and you will deliver his soul from Sheol.Proverbs 23:13-14Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will bring delight to your soul.Proverbs 29:17Now, I know that by sharing these things I am opening myself up to some dissenting comments, but please remember I did not write these verses, I am only repeating what God set down in His Word. And in case you thought these were all Old Testament sayings, here is one from the Book of Revelation 3:19:Those I love I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest and repent.I think it’s important here to insert this verse:All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness,2 Timothy 3:16When you are direct and strict with your children, you are not doing so to harm them, but to help them, even if they choose not to see it that way, even if they reject you for it.God is the best Parent ever to have existed and we, His children, reject Him every day. And yet, because of love, He continues to provide for us all, and He doesn’t altar truth just because we stamp our feet and raise our fists to heaven.Because I, the LORD, do not change, you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed. Yet from the days of your fathers, you have turned away from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Hosts.Malachi 3:6-7(Of course, this all means we gradually loosen our control of our children so they can live their own lives, just inserting this here to allay any misunderstandings.)_______________________________________________________So, I hope from all this we can see that:1. We need to be disciplined,2. Disciplining our children is not optional if we love them. And, with that, let’s talk about discipline and homeschooling.________________________________________________________________Do you remember those elements to successful homeschooling?1. Enthusiasm2. Purpose3. Goals.I hope now you see that all three require this most important element of discipline, because when our desires are out of control disorder keeps us from doing any of them.We can’t go out on nature walks if we can’t find our shoes. We can’t draw if we can’t find any pencils or paper. We can’t do fun experiments if we can’t even find baking soda or vinegar. Also, as you will recall, common sense shows us there are four main pillars to real learning:1. Gaining favor with God and man2. The tools of learning3. Content4. Application. And with these four pillars our relationship with God and others is the priority, and now I hope you see that self-discipline is in that first tier.If we don’t have discipline in our homeschooling, we don’t have character building, and we can’t teach our children how to get along with and bless others. They won’t be able to learn how to read, write, and do arithmetic, because every time they hit a rough spot and feel like they want to give up, they won’t know how to persevere. They won’t have any knowledge of anything worth-while, because we won’t make them sit through some boring things in order to get to the interesting things. They won’t have the ability to apply what they learn because they will be too lazy and weak._____________________________________________Charlotte Mason has said this about discipline:By ‘education is a discipline,’ we mean the discipline of habits, formed definitely and thoughtfully, whether habits of mind or body.A Philosophy of Education, p. xviiOf course, this comes from her oft quoted saying:Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life.I also appreciate her motto:I am,I ought,I can,I will.Which she explained on page 330 of her book Home Education:I am--we have the power of knowing ourselves.I ought--we have within us a moral judge, to whom we feel ourselves subject, and who points out and requires of us our duty.I can--we are conscious of power to do that which we perceive we ought to do.I will--we determine to exercise that power with a volition which is in itself a step in the execution of that which we will._________________________________________When we pursue discipline, we are not doing so at the expense of freedom of expression, but for the sake of it. Our children will be better able to have the freedom to express themselves in all of their interests if they first know how to keep from being hampered by their own bad habits. In what ways has homeschooling helped you and your children become more disciplined?Let me know in the comments section (if there is one for you). Letting God Hold the Homeschool Map

We are told that we need goals, that goals are a good thing.Attila the Hun had goals, as did Napoleon and Hitler. They had their five year and ten year plans, didn’t they? (Well, maybe not so much Attila, but definitely Napoleon and Hitler.)The folks meeting in Davos, Switzerland definitely have had their goals, such as diminishing the population and turning us all into drones—but I am so glad they will never become successful! This is going really, really out there, I know, but I think it makes a point for homeschooling. We need to have goals, and they need to be GOOD ones. This post is the third in a series on having your best homeschooling year yet. We are interested in covering these three concepts:* Enthusiasm—so that your children will be excited about learning for the rest of their lives.* Knowing your purpose—to listen and obey one step at a time.* Knowing your goals—to rear a child who is prepared for life as a whole person.A few posts ago we covered Enthusiasm, and that was so much fun! Then we covered Purpose--and that one got crazy!Today we are going to be talking about how to formulate good goals for homeschooling.First, we are going to be talking about the bad goals we have inherited, then we are going to be talking about how to develop good goals, both for the long term and the short term. Now, we’ve been trained to be worker bees in the huge factory we call an economy, so we can’t help but think in terms of work and productivity. In many ways this is a good thing, and I’ve talked before about how even God tells us in Proverbs to consider the ant. Ants definitely plan ahead, as they build up their homes and fill up their coffers in the summer to prepare for the lean times in the winter. But this is not the productivity we have been trained in.For those of us in the consumer class, we have been trained in this kind of productivity:* You go to school,* to get a good job,* to make more money,* to buy more things. If you have been elevated to the slightly higher level of management, it goes this way:* You go to school,* to get that degree which will boost you to manage others,* so that you can help your company make more money,* to produce the products,* so the people will work hard for your company,* to make more money,* so they will buy more things,* to keep your company going. Then, on the higher level of business leader, we have this train of thought:* You go to that good school,* to get that degree,* then you elbow your way up the ladder,* to gain that title,* so you can encourage more efficiency,* to keep those companies churning,* to keep people working and buying,* so you can keep the economy going. And at the top of the pyramid, we have this:* You go to that Ivy League school,* to get that clout,* to get you in the right circles,* to feel you are on top of the world looking down,* so you can formulate ways of manipulating industries,* and political bodies,* and entire countries,* to keep people from seeing,* that you are using them,* to build a world that completely ignores God,* to become god.At the center of it all is what we have been calling “education.”I know, we all thought that going to school was supposed to make us free, but it was hijacked many years ago and turned into a brainwashing machine (as I described in my last podcast—be sure and check it out if you haven’t already) to turn us into slaves for the goals of those at the very top.No matter how hard you examine the textbooks, you won’t find these doctrines stated directly anywhere. But if you pull back far enough, the pattern emerges. You begin to see clearly how the entire system, from the trip on the bus in the morning, to roll call for every class, to the grades and the teacher-parent conference, is meant to train our brains to think in terms of productivity for the machine. And, if you dig into the history of education, you find that it has all been done on purpose by well-meaning people who did not realize just how evil a few decisions made outside the fear of God can become. What we have ended up with is not learning, it is indoctrination and obedience training. This is why our goals as homeschoolers need to be overhauled. Our aims may well help industry and politics, but only as they perform the aims of God.Here is that prayer Jesus taught us with:In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.Matthew 6:9-13His Kingdom, on earth as it is in heaven. This is our ultimate goal.As believers who have submitted to God, His goals should become our goals in all things, including in education.Instead of having the main goal be consuming, encouraging consuming, or lording over others, character should be basic and foundational. So, when we sit down to make our homeschool plans for the next year, we keep the higher things in mind.Sure, it would seem more productive to stack up the worktexts and go through them methodically, or even to join one of those classical education co-ops which are bent on shoving facts into young minds without sharing with them the reasons why (so comfortable for our public schooled minds). But productive towards what end? Productive to become members of a heard, a hive, or an anthill, or, at the very best, to become the herder, the beekeeper, or the man who can crush the anthill with his boot.Instead, our homeschooling needs to be balanced like this:1. We put the development of character and eternal understanding as the priority. Not the last thing, not at the bottom, but as our priority.2. We put learning the tools of learning as second priority. This gives our children the power to learn and investigate beyond the curriculum of the machine. It includes reading, writing, and beyond numeracy.3. We give them information from the perspective of God as Benevolent Creator of all. We help them understand science, history, geography, politics and all they touch as being part of His plans for us. We take great delight in each area as we see His workings and His delight in His creation to bless us and give us all things freely to enjoy.4. We make sure and immerse our children in real life activities so they can develop connections between the spiritual, mental, emotional, and practical parts of their lives. Compulsory schooling has trained us all to compartmentalize; our working self has one part, our family self another, our spiritual self has 15 minutes in the morning and two hours on Sunday, etc. Our goal must be that our children have a seamless existence; that God is in all of it, and as we are led by the Spirit each facet of our lives is full of Him and His purposes. And we train them in excellence in all areas.* If they are developing character—with their whole hearts.* If they are reading or writing or ciphering—as students pleasing their Master.* If they are learning about mountains or whales in the ocean or the creation of energy via fusion—all with the wonder of an Intellect that created all and knows all.* And as they apply all of their character and all of their knowledge—all of it to the betterment of others and the glory of God.We purchase materials with this perspective in mind, and we plan our days and our months with these things in mind as well.At first, this sounds so ominous, I know. It sounds as if I am asking you to do more than you are capable of, and it is.You can’t homeschool this way without the leading of God. There is no way you, as your sweet little old mommy self, can develop goals that will keep you on track and keep your brain (and your heart) from blowing up all at the same time. You can’t do all this without developing your dependence on Him.He is your Guide, He is your Strength, He is your answer when you have hard questions. As I have homeschooled our 15 children, this is what it has been for me.Can I confess something to you here?I’ve owned a lot of different homeschool mommy planners over the years, and almost all of them have had spaces for “goals.” Guess what, I’ve never been able to fill them out. I think I tried once or twice, but I never could finish. This is because I homeschool the way I live each day; with God holding the map and giving me just enough directions for the next step and no more. That doesn’t mean I haven’t tried to step out further many, many times, but my efforts are so clumsy and silly that they don’t become successful.Always, always He brings me back to square one and I learn to lean and trust and rest.Yes, this is where we are going—to the genius of homeschooling this way.You have to have special ears for this, and a heart that has been softened. This will sound like nonsense otherwise. But, if you do have a soft heart that is sensitive to His leading, this will be the only logical conclusion. This is when we truly get to enjoy learning with our children; when we plan loosely and live each day knowing we have placed the ultimate outcome into His hands. His goals, His way, for His glory. My “goal” for my next post is to talk about Discipline. I believe this will be a lovely way of bringing everything together, don’t you? Also, I have been working on branding lately, and below you can see a draft of what I’ve been creating:What do you think? When You Hate Your Curriculum...

Whether last year was heavy or light, we can start this next year off with hope. Why? Because we have Jesus, and that makes all the difference.Today I would like to show you just how this year can be your best one yet. We will be talking about three keys that will unlock this gracious gift for you:* Enthusiasm—being so enthused with learning that it catches on with your kids.* Knowing Your Purpose—fighting for the Kingdom one child at a time.* Goals that inspire—ones that will carry you through the hard days.Implementing these three keys will help you open the gift of the Father’s great heart of hope for you in your role as mommy to your children.First, let’s talk about the importance of enthusiasm.I know what you’ve been led to think; that the most important things are shoving facts into brains and getting good grades. But those things are only peripherals. It’s really all about RELATIONSHIPS.This is the singular element you need to homeschool. It is more important than what books or methods you may choose.Relationships in all different directions; relationships between subjects, relationships between eras; relationships between the spiritual and the physical; relationships between actions and consequences; and, yes, relationships between people. In fact, the most impacting part of homeschooling is the relationship between the teacher and the pupil; the relationship between you and your children.Within this primary relationship flows the entire schema of your child’s education. No matter how hard we try and divorce ourselves from this fact, it is inevitable.Your child’s concept of reading, math, and learning in general will primarily be shaped by your attitude. Note that I did not say it would be shaped by your ability. To illustrate this, just think about the education of Dr. Ben Carson. His mother was unable to read, yet she fostered a love of reading and learning in her boys that helped her son attain to some of the greatest heights of medicine and government. It was her enthusiasm that made the difference, not her ability.Looking over my own past, I remember best the teachers who were enthusiastic about the subject they were teaching. The rest faded into my memory. There was one history teacher in particular I remember. He didn’t rely on the textbook, but he was excited about the founding fathers and spent most of the hour he had each day telling us story after story and enlightening us on the details of the events we were studying. This inspired me to look at origins of the United States differently and left an impression that followed me into homeschooling my own children.Sadly, he was replaced mid-term by a teacher who didn’t care. After barking out a few instructions about reading the next chapter and getting ready for the unit test, this replacement spent each class period at his desk behind a newspaper. He turned history hour into nap time.Just like most of us, when I first started teaching my children, I assumed it was all about shoving information into their minds. I also assumed the most efficient way to do this was with prepared curriculum. At first, the sparkle of all the new books was exhilarating. We stacked them up, flipped through them, even smelled them (am I the only one that enjoys the scent of printed material?).But, after the newness wore off, we were left with the tedium of reading canned information and filling in endless blanks with predictable information. The curious, creative part of us was being smothered by the procedural requirements of the material. What I could not stand was watching my dearest, most precious little boy sitting for hours with his chubby hand tucked under his chin as he scribbled in line after line in his workbooks. He was trying desperately to please me, so he was enduring the boredom, but he wasn’t happy.Thankfully, I started to research and explore other options. Via different periodicals, limited online research, and limited online encouragement, I was able to look past the curriculum to the roots of true learning.I ventured out beyond the scope and sequence of the typical school schedule and started tackling subjects that sparked my own interest. Before long, homeschooling was not a horrid bore; it was the most delightful part of the day. We all rushed through chores so we could sit around and feast on learning together.Inspiration sparked fires in each of our children that continue to warm and enthuse as they have gone on to be adults.More than good grades and good jobs, this should be the goal we adopt as we homeschool.Next, let’s talk about knowing your purpose.Do you know your purpose? Why are you doing this homeschooling thing, anyway? It’s OK if you are a bit confused about it. I think you could say I have been pretty ditsy at times myself (I’m a natural blonde, so it may just come with the territory). It used to be I was homeschooling for two main things:* To raise religious saints* To raise absolutely successful geniusesThese two purposes looked pretty good at first, but I soon found out their main flaw: it was all about ME.Oh yeah, it would be great for the kids to become devout intellectuals touted by the leaders of the world—it would make me look pretty good and vindicate me for homeschooling in the first place—but it would be wrong. It would be wrong because it wouldn’t be about:* God’s purposes.* The child’s purposes.Besides, what did I know about religious saints and successful geniuses? I had never met any, and I found the portrayals were not accurate at all.For one thing, religious saints usually are not religious, and they are rarely hailed in their own time. Typically, no one even knows about them until years after they have passed, and they mostly lived humble, unremarkable lives. For another thing, the term “successful genius” is an oxymoron. Those who are successful are rarely geniuses, and those who are geniuses are rarely successful. Also, geniuses tend to be paupers, and those who are successful tend to be immoral or aggravating to the point of taking success and leaving destruction in its wake. No, these purposes were only ego-stroking on my part.God’s purposes for each child are different, and He doesn’t always share them with me.What He does share, if I am listening, is the next step. So, my purpose is to listen, then obey. This is your purpose, too.As you deal with your child, and as you sit and try and make sense of what your child needs and when, you must develop your ability to be quiet and pay attention to that still, quiet voice within you. Ask God, and He will help you. It may not come to you all at once, and it may not occur to you as you are perusing a homeschool supply site.It may be that He gives you insight as you are stirring the gravy or folding the towels. It might be in the middle of the night with a dream. But if you ask in expectation, in faith, He’ll give you what you need. He will supply the purpose as you go along.Feeling unsure about this step? Just remember what Jesus said: “Only believe.” Relax into your faith with expectation and it will come, trust me.Thirdly, let’s discuss goals, which we have already partly addressed. What are our goals? In the world’s understanding, our goals should be something like graduating our children with all A’s.That’s the simplistic, surface way you’ve been taught to look at education. With this in mind, any old curriculum will do, just as long as you can shuffle your child through the grades so they get to graduation, then you can breathe a sigh of relief that your job is done.Hopefully, you can coax your child into going to college or pursuing some sort of career, and that will put the necessary feather in your cap.Homeschooling this way is basically the same system we opted out of, only with a few Bible verses thrown in.But what if there are higher goals? What if learning to read and write and do math is more about preparing them, not for college or a job, but for a whole life? Our existence is more than filling a space in a cubicle somewhere. It is about those relationships we talked about.Your child needs to know more than how to fill out a job application; he needs to know how to be respectful, kind, and to do good work even when no one is watching.Your child needs to know how to handle a boss who is nasty, a spouse who is disagreeable, a child who is whiny. They need to know what to do in an emergency situation, and how to diffuse someone who is out of control. They need to know what to do with boredom, depression, and happiness. If you keep the goal of growing a whole person in mind, it will solve a lot of your anxiety.Instead of seeing your child as either a success or failure based on pure academic performance, you will be able to accept them for their personal strengths and weaknesses and adjust accordingly. It will relegate academic performance to its proper place in the backseat of the car, or as the servant to the more important parts of one’s existence.Whether your child is three or thirteen, you can begin incorporating these three things as soon as you finish reading this post or listening to the podcast. To recap they are:* Enthusiasm—so that your children will be excited about learning for the rest of their lives.* Knowing your purpose—to listen and obey one step at a time.* Knowing your goals—to rear a child who is prepared for life as a whole person. With these precepts in mind, 2026 can become your best year yet!If this post has inspired you, there is more to come. In the Mom Delights community we go deeper than curriculum reviews into the why’s and wherefores of homeschooling. In the following weeks My intent is to go more in depth, beginning with the idea of enthusiasm, because without this vital key nothing else works. After expanding on these three main principles, I will show you a picture of how these principles can be applied in real life. Until then, be blessed in Jesus! This is a public episode. How Our Large Family Stays Organized by Cutting Clutter and Creating Peaceful Flows

Learn the simple system that helped my large family stay organized—stations and flows. Some of my children were naturally tidy, others… not so much! But through years of household projects (and a major downsize across states!) we discovered practical ways to manage clutter, save time, and create smoother daily routines. In this video, I share:  • What “stations” and “flows” are and why they transform a home  • Real examples from our baking station, injury-care station, and coffee bar  • How analyzing your home’s “flow” reduces stress and wasted time  • Why decluttering is essential—especially when raising a village  • The spiritual foundation behind my organizational lifestyle (Proverbs 16:9) If you’re overwhelmed by household chaos, or just want fresh ideas for simplifying your space, this final video in the “Seriously Organized” series will encourage and equip you. Here is the link to the introduction to this series:https://momdelights.com/index.php/2025/11/10/seriously-organized-finding-gods-order-in-my-chaotic-life-as-the-mom-of-15/👉 Visit momdelights.com  Here's the link to the planner on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3X8RAcR  I'm trying out Substack. How I Stay Organized with 15 Kids

None of us are given unlimited days on planet earth. It may be shocking to realize that a person who is 70 years old has only lived 25,500 days. That’s not a lot. Each day is precious, so I try not to be wasteful with my time. I try and put as much meaning in every hour as I can.One way I do this is to use blocks.Hi there, dear mommies, this is Sherry Hayes. I’m the interesting mom of 15 children who’s been homeschooling for over 36 years and I love sharing something that will add to your life. So, grab something to do, such as sorting through the piles of junk mail, and listen as we dive into the good life in Jesus! As I have discussed before in the introduction to this series on being seriously organized:I am the wife of one energetic, but retired, man; the mother of 15 children, the mother-in-law of eight spouses, and the grandmother of 20 grandchildren. All of these people need me in one way or another, even if only via concern and prayer, in different ways and at different times.Almost none of their needs are consistent or predictable. Their schedules are mostly erratic, and their needs vary according to age, availability, proximity, etc. And none of these variables are within my control. To sum things up: I rarely have an uneventful day.My life is like a flowing log drive; I am simply being carried along with the current, jumping from one log to another. However, there are areas which God has helped me build plans and routines, and I am sharing a few of them with you today. Also, as I stated before:I don’t share these things without a caveat. The caveat is this: These are the routines God has helped me create for my specific life situation.I suggest you take them more as an example or an inspiration, but never as direct application. If you do, you will end up a nail-biter, because you will have skipped the most vital part; relationship with Jesus.Walking with God, no matter how crazy that my look, is the fastest way to efficiency on our mission to love others and bring His Kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven.Any other way may bring about some worldly goal, but that goal may in turn lead people to hell. (The concentration camps in Nazi Germany were a model of efficiency.)Thank God, I’ll never be that successful at organizing my life.Today we are going to be tackling three areas of serious organizing:* Time blocking* Creating daily focus areas* CentralizingWhat do I mean when I say “blocks”?These are the natural spans of time in a day naturally suited for certain tasks. For instance, when I had young children at home it was natural to think of early mornings as time to spruce up for the day. Later in the morning we might think of making breakfast and doing morning chores, or having the “active” part of the morning. Then the hours before, during, and just after lunch were better for concentrated learning. The early afternoon was a spent in quiet and rest, and after this is I would send the youngest outside to expel their energy while some of us were getting the dinner ready. After dinner clean-up was family time, then nighttime routines and bed.Blocks are good because they:Keep things tidier. If we know we are supposed to be doing chores in the early morning hours, we can keep the school books put up. Then, when the chores are done, we can put away the cleaning supplies and appliances in their proper place to make room for the schoolbooks.Later, when it’s time to rest, we can put the school books away and tidy for the afternoon. When we don’t have boundaries like these set up, everything gets jumbled together in one chaotic mess! They help us have better focus. When we know we are only concentrating on one thing at a time, we can zoom in and concentrate. They give security to children.I’ll never forget the line in a movie where a young man, after drowing up in a dysfunctional, drug addict riddled neighborhood said he joined the army so he could know when dinner time was. There is so much in a child’s life that is new and unfamiliar. Knowing what time they can expect dinner, learning time, play time, and family time gives them some continuity and helps them feel more secure. When children feel secure, they are much less likely to experience emotional melt-downs and do bad things to get attention. They give security to adults. There is something comforting and restful about knowing what comes next in my day. No matter if my actual time schedule is thrown off, knowing that the next block of time will be for cooking, eating, and cleaning keeps me on track and allows me to use my brain for higher things, such as how to write this podcast script...Now, on to creating daily focuses. As I suggested in a past podcast, I have split up my home into zones, such as a kitchen/dining room zone, and then I assign each of these zones a day in which I focus on this particular area. This may mean I have a weekly, monthly, or yearly day when I spend my time and energy in that space. In older times, the focus days sometimes looked like this:* Sunday—Sabbath Day* Monday—Cleaning Day* Tuesday—Laundry Day* Wednesday—Hobby Day* Thursday—Shopping Day* Friday—Business Day* Saturday—Family DayHere is an example of how I assign my weekly focus areas:* Mondays are for extra cleaning in my kitchen and working on my online presence.* Tuesdays we work on the master suite and bathrooms.* Wednesdays are devoted to the basement and the laundry room.* Thursdays the focus is on putting away the laundry. This is the day I have set aside for online consulting or getting together with people outside the home.* Fridays are for cleaning the house generally for Saturday, then having some fun.* Saturdays are for resting and relaxing with my husband; a sabbath unto the Lord when I also enjoy fellowship with other believers (no, I’m not a Seventh Day Adventist—more on my denominational stance another time).* Sundays are when I have a loose schedule but try and catch up in any areas which have been missed throughout the week in preparation for the next week. Please note that there are a whole bunch of other things going on these days, such as helping with school work, shuffling people around, and regular cooking and cleaning.Thankfully, my dear husband takes care of the yards and the cars, unless there is something special I am aching to do.Also, when I get a bit of extra time I try and fit in a special project in each of the areas mentioned, such as cleaning out the fridge-door shelves and labeling them, which is something I did last week. Now, let’s discuss the idea of centralizing. What is centralizing? Well, it’s a variation on the theme of “a place for everything and everything in its place,” only with a slightly different emphasis. It started many years ago, when we lived in a huge house with lots of bedrooms and loads of shoes, socks, hats, scarves, coats, etc.The job of sorting out all of these items and putting them away in everyone’s rooms after an outing was so difficult that it never got done, which meant the next time we went out it took hours to find everything we needed. So, I came up with the idea of putting each type of thing in a centralized place.* For socks, we had a bin in the hall closet upstairs.* For shoes we had a space in the bottom of the front coat closet.* Coats were hung in that front closet.* Hats, gloves, and scarves were stored in bins on the top shelf of that closet. This is the system we used for over 17 years, and the system we modified slightly and still use today, only now I have two three-drawer storage units in the bottom of our coat closet, one for socks sorted into dark, white, and colored, and the other for scarves, hats, and gloves.Although we had four separate bathrooms at that time, we had one place to keep medicines and extra personal hygiene supplies. I even had a centralized place for hairbrushes and barrettes (remember, we have 11 girls). Some large families have used this principle to create a “family closet,” where all of the clothes are hung together to make laundry easier. We used a form of this for our last four little girls when we had a walk-in closet in our bedroom. The bottom clothing rack on one side was dedicated to their tiny outfits (we hang all of our clothing up on hangers except for pj’s and underwear). On each of our three floors I kept a centralized place for baby needs as well. How I miss caring for all of those tiny ones—our 15th baby is 16 now!My lifestyle of serious organization is based on the Biblical idea expressed in this verse:A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.Proverbs 16:9In case you were wondering, this does not mean that I never make plans or build routines. I could not live without these great helpers. There are two distinctives which make these part of my serious organizational lifestyle:* I allow God to help me build these plans and routines so that they flow with His plans.* I allow these plans and routines to be rerouted or forgotten altogether whenever is necessary, and I accept this with grace and expectation that God is going to help me keep on top of the log flow anyways. If you just stumbled upon this podcast, I hope you will take the time to watch the foundational recording which explains the scope and purpose of this series. You will find it linked in the description. In the future we will be covering even more portions of how I organized in a serious way, including creating stations and flows and purging.Until then, be sure and enjoy the freebies and other things on my website, momdelights.com, as well as on my Substack as Mom Delights. If you are interested, I have produced a planner which includes places for just about everything a large family mom would need. It is undated, which means it won’t be wasted even if you get off track for a while. I’ll put the link in the description below.Of course, there are lots of other things you can purchase which I have produced on Amazon which are helpful and, hopefully pretty as well. You will find those links below as well.Hope this has blessed you, have a great day in Jesus! Ways I Keep Organized as the Mom of 15

Are you like me—your mind full of a million ideas, swirling so fast you end up putting the cereal in the fridge and the milk in the cupboard? If so, chalkboarding might be your new best friend.Hi dear mommies! I’m Sherry Hayes—mom of 15, grandma of 20, and homeschooler for over 36 years—and today we’re continuing our journey into serious organization for real moms with real lives. In this episode, I’m sharing three of the systems God has helped me build:✨ Chalkboarding — how I use chalkboards and whiteboards in nearly every room to collect ideas, ease overwhelm, spark creativity, and communicate with my family.✨ Personal Care Rhythms — simple evening and morning routines that anchor me for whatever the day brings.✨ Zoning the Home — why breaking the house into manageable zones keeps everything from falling apart.I don’t share these as rules to follow, but as inspiration—because the heart of serious organization is walking with Jesus and letting Him shape your plans.“A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” — Proverbs 16:9📌 If you’re new, be sure to watch the foundational video linked below.📌 Explore freebies, planners, and helpful resources at momdelights.com.📌 Join me on Substack at Mom Delights for more encouragement and practical wisdom.Hope this blesses you—have a wonderful day in Jesus!👉 Visit momdelights.com  Foundations of serious organization podcast on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbEQXh9V8jcHere's the link to the planner on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3X8RAcR  I'm trying out Substack. How I Stay Organized as a Mom of 15: Delegating, Categorizing & Daily Routines

This is post no. 2 in our series on being “seriously” organized as the mom of 15.Remember our guiding verse?A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.Proverbs 16:9If you just stumbled upon this podcast, I hope you will take the time to watch the foundational recording which explains the scope and purpose of this series. You will find it linked in the description. In the future we will be covering even more portions of how I organized in a serious way, including “chalkboarding,” personal care, and zoning. If you are interested, I have produced a planner which includes places for just about everything a large family mom would need. It is undated, which means it won’t be wasted even if you get off track for a while. You can purchase this planner pre-printed on Amazon as well.Of course, there are lots of other things you can purchase which I have produced on Amazon which are helpful and, hopefully pretty. Some of them are linked on the Shop page on this webpage. This is a public episode. Modern Education Is a Sham | Rediscovering God’s Simple Plan for Learning

There are so many theories about education—and almost all of them are as dumb as rocks. Why? Because they’ve taken what God built into every human—the ability to learn and teach—and turned it into a business. Hi, I’m Sherry Hayes, mom of 15 and homeschooler for over 36 years. In this episode of Mom Delights, I’ll share how modern education became a self-serving system built on jargon and bureaucracy, and how we can return to something far simpler—and far more powerful. We’ll talk about:🌿 The truth behind “education theories” and why they fail📖 What real learning looks like: Observe, Think, Do🇺🇸 How early American education and the McGuffey Readers reflected biblical truth🧠 The inspiring story of George Washington Carver’s God-led genius🏡 Why homeschooling allows us to rediscover God’s original plan for learning✨ Download the free chart and companion guide mentioned in this video at momdelights.com https://momdelights.com/index.php/2025/10/12/modern-education-is-a-sham-rediscovering-gods-simple-plan-for-learning/Here is the link to the Homeschooling 101 playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi-jr9P7R1o&list=PLxbcoXQo3Qiy5eKASa0BO7prU0dgldPFK____________________________In case you were wondering... Why Anyone Can Teach: Recovering the Simplicity and Power of Early American Education

Learning isn’t complicated—and it never was. In this video, I share why American education thrived under the guidance of McGuffey and collapsed under the so-called reforms of Horace Mann. We’ll look at how real learning is simple, rooted in the Bible, and fueled by personal responsibility—not by state control or academic fads. I’ll also show you how to identify vintage materials that nourish your child’s soul instead of stuffing their minds with educational “candy.” If you’re looking for practical homeschooling wisdom that actually works, you’re in the right place. ✨ Visit my website for free resources and tools to support your homeschool journey:https://momdelights.com/index.php/blog/Here is the link to the Homeschooling 101 playlist:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi-jr9P7R1o&list=PLxbcoXQo3Qiy5eKASa0BO7prU0dgldPFK ____________________________Interested in supporting the work of Mom Delights? What Real Learning Looks Like: A Homeschool Mom's Framework After 36 Years

In today’s episode, I’m pulling back the curtain on what “real” learning looks like after 36 years of homeschooling my 15 children. We’ve journeyed through the philosophies of Charlotte Mason, Ruth Beechick, Raymond Moore, John Holt, and more—but now it’s time to ask: How do we put all of this into practice? I’ll walk you through a 30,000-foot view of a four-part framework that changed everything for our family: A child’s relationship with God and man Tools for learning (the basics done well) Content (truth-driven and interest-based) Practical skills (the stuff of real life) We’ll also talk about why mimicking public education leads to burnout, how to stay focused in a sea of choices, and how to homeschool with purpose, not just curriculum. Whether you’re just starting out or have been at this a while, this episode will help you reset and refocus on what really matters. Let’s do this—together. For a free printable of this outline, be sure and visit the blog post for this episode on my website: This is a public episode. The Missing Element in Classical Education: Rediscovering the Delight of Heart-Led Learning

Are you convinced classical education is good—but still feel something’s missing? After homeschooling 15 children over 36 years, I’ve discovered a deeper, richer way of learning—one that engages not just the mind, but the heart. In today’s video, I explore the concept of “heart-thinking,” drawn from Scripture, science, and real-life moments that can only happen at home. We’ll talk about: Why true learning involves more than just intellect What the Bible says about “delight” and how it relates to education How even the most reluctant learner can be transformed by joy Why some of the most powerful teaching happens in everyday moments—kneading bread, reading aloud, or walking through the woods I’ll also share two of my favorite homeschooling books that beautifully express this philosophy. If you’ve been looking for a higher path in home education—one rooted in joy, relationship, and God’s design—you’ll find encouragement and practical insight here. 📚 Resources Mentioned:  – A Biblical Home Education by Ruth Beechick  – Charlotte Mason Companion by Karen Andreola  – Mother Culture by Karen Andreola  – More on John Taylor Gatto in the playlist below ✨ Visit my website for free resources and tools to support your homeschool journey: https://momdelights.com/index.php/blog/🔔 Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and turn on notifications so you don’t miss the upcoming videos where I’ll dive into the structure behind this “delight-filled” approach.  This is a public episode. Why I Would Not Use Classical Education | A Veteran Homeschool Mom’s Take

Classical Education is being praised by top conservatives, but after 36 years homeschooling my 15 children, I’ve learned it’s not the answer—and may even be harmful. In this video, I explain why I reject it, share historical insights, and offer practical, Christ-centered alternatives like Charlotte Mason, the Moore Formula, and Unschooling. How to Decide If You Can Afford a Big Family: Insights from a Mom of 15

In today’s episode, I answer one crucial question every parent faces when deciding on their family size: Can I afford more children? I break down the true cost of raising children, using the latest stats from the U.S. government, showing how much it costs to raise kids from birth to age 17—and how that stacks up against real-life family finances. With 15 children of our own, my husband and I have experienced both the highs and lows of parenthood and finances. Despite the staggering costs—over $4.6 million—we’ve learned that faith, trust, and God's provision have made all the difference in our journey. Throughout this episode, I’ll share stories of how our family managed during the leanest times, from homelessness to financial struggle, and how God's provision always met our needs. If you’re wondering whether you can afford a larger family, listen in as I offer my personal insights, challenges, and ultimate joy in raising a large family on a tight budget. We may not have had wealth, but our children have been priceless treasures in every way.For more content like this, along with loads of freebies, be sure and visit my website, MomDelights.com This is a public episode. Does Having Babies Make Logical Sense?

As a mom of 15, whenever I announced the births of our children as a product of our trust in God, someone would inevitably exclaim, "But God gave you a brain, too, so why don't you use it?" The implication was that having babies is not logical. But is it logical to have babies? I think so, and in this video I will give some reasons why preventing babies is harmful, both to individuals and to the society at large, while having babies benefits everyone. Receive a Child, Receive Jesus II Babies Unit Study for Mommies

We have been trained to see everything from a negative side-view. Governments, money, morality, social issues, standard of living. I believe that thinking and speaking with a dark foreboding expectation of the future sets things in motion so that our decisions begin creating the very things we say we dread. Our expectation of the future is causing us to build that future. However, the opposite is also true. If we can turn our gaze on Jesus, our expectations can be adjusted so they are positive. Hope of the future sets the ball rolling. When we believe everything is working for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purposes, our individual decisions begin to look different. We are falling into plans for a hopeful future, and, in doing so we are helping to create that future as an optimistic one.For more content like this, as well as loads of freebies, be sure and visit my website, MomDelights.com This is a public episode. Humans Are Earth's Greatest Resource II God Wants More People

"The material conditions of life will continue to get better for most people in most countries most of the time, indefinitely. Within a century or two, all nations and most of humanity will be at or above today’s Western living standards. I also speculate, however, that many people will continue to think and say that the conditions of life are getting worse." This is a quote by Julian Simon, an economist who fought against the lie of overpopulation. In his understanding, human beings are NOT a cancerous blight, but our greatest natural resource! Elon Musk God This Right II We Need More Babies II New Commonplace Book No. 2

There is no suggestion here that family or children (especially lots of children) will fulfill all dreams and solve all societal ills. I know first-hand that children are messy, smelly, and disruptive. They cost a lot, even if you cook from scratch and shop at Goodwill. Too often they take all of your loving care and throw it back in your face as a "thank you."But there is more. Much, much more. There is SO much more, in fact, that it would take a million podcasts to tell you about the exponential benefits of doing things God's way.Listen in to find out just some of them.
