S7 M2 Leaving it to Chance? Estate Planning and Healthcare Proxy Considerations

Topics that make us consider our mortality – such as estate planning and healthcare proxies – are things that many people don’t want to talk or think about. Unfortunately, leaving these things to chance – especially if you’re a solo ager – may result in situations that do not reflect our desires. Join Jess as she explores what happens when someone passes away without a will in Colorado, and what happens if you are not able to advocate for yourself in a medical setting, but don’t have a health care proxy. At the end of this episode, Jess will also provide some resources that make delving into these hidden chapters a little easier and less daunting. Resources Discussed in this Episode:The Conversation ProjectFinancial Empowerment CenterSunshine Home ShareEnd of Life Planning YouTube SeriesMoneyTalks 50+ is brought to you by ElderWatch: a 20+ year collaboration between AARP and the Colorado Attorney General's Office. S7 E1 Solo Aging

Solo Agers are individuals who live alone, and who do not have children – or, whose children are unwilling or unable to provide additional support. According to the US Census Bureau, there are approximately 22 million adults age 55+ who live alone, and an estimated 28% of them are childless. When we factor in adults 55+ who have children, but whose children are unwilling or unable to provide support, solo agers encompass about 34% of older adults in the United States. Given the growth of the solo aging community, as well as the current caregiver crisis in the United States, Jess invited AARP Research Director Laura Skufca to MoneyTalks 50+! Join Jess and Laura to learn more about recent research on Solo Agers, important considerations when it comes to being a successful Solo Ager, and some financial literacy topics and resources that are critical for this unique group.Resources Discussed in this Episode: Sarah Gebber – author of Essential Retirement Planning for Solo AgersAARP Retirement Calculator Home Fit guideLivability indexOther AARP CalculatorsVCC – Virtual Community CenterSenior PlanetFinancial Empowerment CenterDOROTArea Agencies on AgingMoneyTalks 50+ is brought to you by ElderWatch: a 20+ year collaboration between AARP and the Colorado Attorney General's Office.
