Mindfulness Matters for Creators: Insights from Dara Alix ”Mental Health Expert”
Growing a garden in your mind can be a powerful tool for cultivating positivity, resilience, and inner peace. When we tend to our thoughts and emotions with the same care and attention that we give to a garden, we can create a rich and abundant inner landscape that nourishes our well-being and supports our growth. enjoy a conversation with my friend Dara Alix Licensed mental health counselor and nutritionist expert just as a garden can be overrun with weeds that choke out the plants we want to thrive, our minds can be filled with negative thoughts and emotions that can hinder our mental and emotional health. To grow a garden in your mind without weeds, it's essential to practice mindfulness and cultivate a positive mindset. One way to do this is to become aware of your thoughts and emotions and examine them with curiosity and compassion. When a negative thought arises, don't judge it or push it away, but simply acknowledge it and observe how it makes you feel. Then, ask yourself if the thought is helpful or unhelpful and whether it aligns with your values and goals. If the thought is unhelpful or doesn't align with your values, try to reframe it in a more positive light. For example, if you find yourself thinking "I'm not good enough," you could reframe it as "I'm doing my best, and that's enough." Over time, this practice can help you cultivate a more positive and resilient mindset and create a garden in your mind that's free from weeds. In addition to mindfulness and positive thinking, it's also essential to take care of your body and nurture healthy habits. Just as a garden needs water, sunlight, and nutrients to thrive, your mind and body need proper rest, nutrition, and exercise to function at their best. By cultivating a healthy and positive mindset and taking care of your body,you creative process you can create a garden in your mind that's rich, abundant, and free from weeds. With time and patience, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor and reap the benefits of a healthy and resilient mind.

While many people are hustling to map out their resolutions & goals, I am starting a slightly different trend. There is no pressure. No strict rules. No deadlines. No shame or guilt. It works for where I’m at. I hope you’ll join me! I am dedicating small moments each day to implement simple practices that will bring out my most authentic self. I’ve already started in 2021 (no rules remember?) and have found it transformational! Take which practices work best for you and put them into, well, practice! As often as you’re able to, for as long as you’re able. I’m cheering you on!!! Practice #1 VISION Whenever we find ourselves in a situation that stumps us in some way; we can practice asking ourselves “What do I want this to look like?”. Beginning with the end in mind helps us craft a plan that is most authentic to us, physically, emotionally, and mentally. Ask yourself: 1. What is my ideal outcome for this situation? 2. What steps do I need to take to achieve that? 3. Which step next? 4. Is there an internal belief or mindset that I need to adjust to achieve this? There are certain things which are out of our control yet there are just as many things within our control, including our responses. It’s not only about changing external circumstances but also examining any internal beliefs, mindsets and attitudes that can possibly shift to better support us. It may be time to let go of the habitual mindset “it is what it is” and begin practicing “it can be what I want”. Change is possible! Practice #2 PAUSING We live in a society of instant everything! While often convenient, we have unfortunately conditioned ourselves to also be instantaneous, especially in our reactions. This can cause conflict within ourselves and with others. By practicing pausing, we create a space (even if it’s only a moment) allowing our minds and hearts a chance to process the situation before we act. One way I found helpful to practice this is to press my thumb and middle finger together. In my mind it’s like pressing my very own pause button. This is a cue for me to take a breath and ask myself one or two quick questions such as: . What is really triggering me? Is that the best thing to say? Do I honestly have the time, energy, or resources to say yes to this? Is what’s being said the truth or merely opinion? Do I have all the information? What’s the worst that will happen if I don’t engage? By creating that pause, I find that I am responding from a place that’s more authentic and less stressful! I do not do this in every single situation, that is unrealistic. This is a practice. This takes time, intention, and consistency. Start with one situation a day where you consciously pause. See how it feels. What was different than in times past in similar situations? As you start experiencing the benefits, I hope you’ll build upon this practice. Here is a little bit about his story: - Sam Maxwell is a jack of all trades, from painting to writing to designing, creativity is his strong suit. Although he works with many mediums, his favorite by far is shoes. From childhood, he had a deep appreciation for fashion and design, seeing it as a form of art. One day, he decided to create something of his own. With a thrifted pair of shoes and some paint, he first pair of custom made shoes was born! - When Sam began his work with shoes, he relied very heavily on his faith to guide him. Whether it be the color scheme or type of shoe to use, he allows the voice of God to guide him and bring something beautiful and new. - One of my favorite moments during this podcast was when he tells about prophesying to his seventh grade class. A little Bit about our amazing guess Elliot Schweickert! At GNS we believe that to make something great we have to forget the pressure of perfectionism. Mistakes lead us to discovery in life and in art. Run on sentences show us our deepest thoughts. Accidental spills can breathe life into an old design. We are committed to living full, messy lives. These are the ideas our mistakes have led us to. Have you ever felt like you will never be enough? That no matter how much you work to clean up and perfect, you will never be adequate? You’ll take off and then crash and burn. You’ll leap and then bite it. You’ll try to fly, feel like you’re doing ok, and then realize you’ve actually been falling the whole time and that you suck at life. I’m so sorry. Me too! I’ve struggled with some fairly big, public leaps that felt like I came out with a mouthful of dirt. Failure. What a horrible word. What a constant, scary, dreadful companion. The disappointment of a great idea that came out… iffy at best, has paralyzed me many times. I created massive worlds inside my head, and when the end result was not nearly anywhere close to what I had hoped, I disappeared. I packed up the plans, I shelved the enthusiasm and I went about normal, realistic life. But it’s killing me. And somewhere inside of you I hope normal is killing you too. There is genius inside all of us waiting to be recognized. I’m convinced it will never reach daylight if it has to be perfect before it’s seen. Imperfection is terrifying, but I believe that the mess of our mistakes is still worth it. This blog will be a collection of my thoughts, dreams, and experiences. It won’t be perfect, but it will be my best. Genius isn’t always spelled correctly, but it needs to be written all the same. Some people dream of one day opening their own bakery – just not Greg Franklin. "I failed home ec," he says with a laugh. "I never liked baking or cooking at all." While looking for a hobby about five years ago, though, he was scrolling through Facebook when a photo of a cheesecake caught his eye. Intrigued, he bought all the necessary ingredients and equipment (including the wrong pan), baked a cheesecake and promptly burned the whole thing. But he stuck with it. Franklin continued baking, giving most of his cheesecakes away for free. When he wanted some extra cash to buy a new lawnmower, though, he started selling the cakes around town. One customer requested mini cheesecakes for a birthday party; when Franklin ended up with extra batter, he made extra and posted about them on Facebook. Within 45 minutes, he was sold out. Crème brulee is the most popular flavor. A little over 3 years ago, perspective on life was getting to the next paycheck and surrounding yourself with friends, love, and drinking life away. But perspective suckerpunched my routine and forcefully crushed my everyday life. Having stage 4 cancer takes you to the front of the line to have your conversation with death. I still remember my conversation with the doctor after the surgery and giving me the “talk”. It wasn’t a regular visit to the doctor, “take 2 pills and get plenty of rest and you’ll be feeling better in no time”. No time was now NOW time. The message was ‘make’ the most of your time. Lately, I was spending most of my time doing than making. ‘Doing’ feels robotic, non-conscious effort, thoughtless. I want to make, create, generate, think! I feel its time to ‘make’ a change. My PWAT family is #1! I felt all the support and love from my PWAT family when I went through my hardest days. My wife, friends, relatives, and PWAT family is a reminder of being blessed. Don’t know where I would be without y’all. My next step is being a creative entrepreneur. I will be able to make/plan my days. Make/create designs. Make/produce art. Make/ construct strategic marketing for my brand. Bottom line, I’m creating and that’s what I’m making of time, my time. Interview with karen Holmes-"Don't die with the gifts inside of you"
Maybe my writing it's not just for me....... Interview with Karen Holmes...here is some of her writing! How often do you really respond for the moment? How often do your responses or reactions accurately reflect what is happening right now, right this second, as opposed to being a response that is carrying baggage from the past (even twenty minutes ago!) or a reaction that is weighed down by anxieties over the future? I think about this a lot as it relates to my parenting. I find that I often respond and react out of fear for the future or anger from the past. Sometimes my kids will do something and I cannot get them under control. My mind will flash forward ten years to them as rebellious teenagers, storming out of the house, me left worried and scared because our relationships are ruined and I have no idea where my children have gone. Then I have to pull myself back into the present, and really see these frowny little three and five year old faces looking up at me. I have to remember to not borrow trouble, for today has enough trouble of its own. I have to remember to not worry about tomorrow, to not let my heart be anxious for the future, to rest in the grace and mercies hidden in this moment and be the best mom I can be right now. I’m not perfect at it. This afternoon, I was still feeling stressed about something that happened this morning. My kids were acting out and I yelled at them; the knot in my stomach unraveling as it went curling around my poor boys. I have to remember that God is there, too – in my past. He is unfettered by time, unconstrained by our simple human attempts to measure our lives. I don’t need to worry about what happened this morning because God’s hand is in it. I cannot go back and do anything now! What good is it to dwell on something that is already over and done? In this area, especially, I want to stretch my fingers, open my hands, let things go. I don’t want to live perpetually in the past, letting the thoughts and feelings of hours, days, years ago continually leak into my life. I want my responses and my reactions to be appropriate to the matter that is right in front of me. My family, especially my unsuspecting, innocent children, deserve to know that whatever I say to them is measured out for the moment – not a landslide from the past threatening to devour them, or some yet unrealized black cloud of the future hanging above their heads. While I believe there is wisdom and a biblical foundation in planning for the future and paying attention to your past, Jesus calls us to react and respond to the present moment. “Don’t worry about your life, what you’ll eat or what you’ll drink, or about your body, what you’ll wear…. Who among you by worrying can add a single moment to your life?” (Matthew 6:24, 27). Not only can we not add any moments, but we can actively lose out on moments (that may not ever even exist!) when we focus our thoughts too far ahead or too far back.
