Episode 273: Evil Dead Burn!!!
Steve and Sean are flying solo this week, no guest, just the boys catching up and diving into Evil Dead Burn. We open with our July travels then get into the news: remembering Sam Neill, the new Nightmare on Elm Street remake landing at Paramount Primal, and David Howard Thornton joining Behind the Mask 2: The Return of Leslie Vernon. Then it's a full breakdown of Evil Dead Burn, Sébastien Vaniček's entry in the franchise and the first chapter of the new trilogy kicked off after Evil Dead Rise. We get into what we expected walking in, how the Deadite work compares to Rise, the practical effects and eye work, whether the film leans too far into action over horror in spots, and where Burn actually lands once you rewatch the entire franchise back to back. We close out with our full Evil Dead rankings, and yes, we disagree. We are the things that were and shall be again!!! Sooo... COME HANG OUT!!! Episode 269: The Making of "Leviticus" with Adrian Chiarella
In this week’s episode, we got to chat with Adrian Chiarella, writer and director of the Australian supernatural horror film Leviticus, hitting theaters this Friday, June 19. Adrian is an award-winning filmmaker who gained acclaim with Dwarf Planet and his television work, and Leviticus marks his feature directorial debut. We dove into Adrian’s background as an editor and how that has shaped his perspective and work now as a director. Adrian also shared how, as a queer teenager, he turned to horror films and connected with their themes of otherness and identity, and how those influences ultimately found their way into Leviticus. He shared his experience casting and working with the film’s actors, one of whom appeared in Talk to Me, and how they built their chemistry both on and off set (apparently playing Fortnight together works great.) We also talked A Nightmare on Elm Street, Frank Ocean, and Cure. It was a fascinating conversation with plenty of behind-the-scenes stories along the way. Episode 268: Getting Lost in the Backrooms
This week, the two of us decided to dive straight into one of the most talked-about and highly anticipated horror films of the year: The Backrooms. What began as a single unsettling image posted online anonymously has now evolved into an A24 feature film, already amassing over $200 million worldwide. We break down the origins of The Backrooms and how it's evolved over the years, from its roots on 4chan and the rise of liminal horror to becoming a viral YouTube sensation created by a teenager before eventually being picked up by A24. We discuss what worked, what didn't, what disappointed us, and what we hoped to see from the adaptation. And despite moments that genuinely impressed us, we found ourselves grappling with why some of the horror elements that worked so well online didn't translate nearly as well onto the big screen. We also chatted about creepypastas, filming found footage, and Slender Man, and why some horror concepts might be more effective online than they are in theaters. If you've seen the film and have thoughts of your own, this is a great convo to dive into, so ... COME HANG OUT!!! We also spent plenty of time talking about John Denver, UFOs, roadside attractions, and other paranormal mysteries. Episode 262: Psychoanalyze Me!
This week, we did something new. It's just us, no guests. We're calling this segment "Pscyhoanalyze Me," and the whole idea is simple: you can learn a lot about someone by their movie picks. So, in this episode, we put that to the test. We're talking first-date horror picks, villains we'd (maybe?) defend, hot monsters, and what film we'd want playing on our deathbed. Along the way, we're throwing out questions that are personality-revealing and really get you thinking. If you're down for some wild questions (and maybe trying to answer them yourself), this episode is fun, introspective, and just a little unhinged. So ... COME HANG OUT!!! This week we’re joined by writer/director Ian Tuason, whose new A24 horror film Undertone is creeping into theaters March 13. The film plays with a deceptively simple question: what if the scariest thing in a movie isn’t what you see… but what you hear later? We talk with Ian about building tension through sound, the eerie psychology of playback and EVP recordings, and why something as innocent as a children’s song can suddenly feel sinister when it’s heard through fresh ears. He also tells us about filming the movie in his own childhood home, the challenge of creating tension with minimal visuals, and the trust it takes to let actors experiment when they’re carrying so much of the film. Episode 249: Don't Tell Larry... With Filmmaker Greg Porper
This week we’re joined by award winning filmmaker Greg Porper, writer, director, and producer of the darkly funny indie feature Don’t Tell Larry, now streaming on Amazon Prime and Apple TV. We talk about the film’s evolution from a scrappy web series into a feature, finding the right tone for a workplace comedy that slowly spirals into something more stressful and unsettling, and how a small lie can snowball into complete chaos.Greg breaks down the real world inspiration behind Larry...that coworker thats just a bit off and no one wants to deal with and how performances from Kiel Kennedy, Patty Guggenheim, Kenneth Mosley, and Ed Begley Jr. helped shape the film in unexpected ways. We also dig into casting surprises, comedic timing, and the blurry line between comedy and horror where laughter turns nervous; tension builds without release and the movie refuses to let you off the hook. Along the way Greg shares stories from the DIY side of production, lessons learned making an indie film right now and what’s next for him after Don’t Tell Larry. And as usual before the chat we catch up on some horror news and afterward we wrap things up with our Mostly Horror Recommendations of the Week sooo...COME HANG OUT!!! Macon Blair on Directing The Toxic Avenger, Monster Movies, and the Magic of a Guy in a Suit
Writer, director, producer, and actor Macon Blair joins us this week to talk about his fascinating career, and his bold new take on a cult classic: the unrated remake of The Toxic Avenger (in theaters August 29).You’ve seen Macon on screen in films like Blue Ruin, Green Room, Thunder Road, and even Oppenheimer. He also won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize with his directorial debut I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, starring Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood. Now, he’s back with a gooey genre shift...reimagining Lloyd Kaufman’s radioactive hero for a new generation while honoring the messy, subversive spirit of Troma. We dig into Macon’s creative path from Murder Party with Jeremy Saulnier all the way to working with Elijah Wood and Peter Dinklage on this bonkers new Toxie. Along the way, we talk about practical effects (yes, intestines are involved), absurd kills that didn’t make the cut, the challenges of redesigning an iconic monster, and why The Toxic Avenger might actually be the perfect antidote to the Marvel-ification of movies.and of course we ask the important question… when can we expect 2oxic 2venger: Toxie vs Dracula vs the Unicorn’s Horn in Space? If you love cult cinema, superhero parodies, or just a good old fashioned over the top practical effect, you don’t want to miss this conversation sooo... Horror Hangout with Gigi Leal: Ice Cube’s War of the Worlds Chaos & Henry Zebrowski’s UFO Project
This week on Mostly Horror, we’re kicking back with horror influencer Gigi Leal (@RoomforScream) for a proper Horror Hangout. We start with the question on everyone’s mind: what exactly is going on with this new War of the Worlds movie starring Ice Cube? It’s a screen-life take on the H.G. Wells classic, dropped on Prime Video in July, and somehow managed to land a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Depending on who you ask, it’s either a chaotic disaster full of bad CGI and shameless product placement or a campy mess worth watching with friends. Then Sean talks about the thing he’s actually excited for: Last Podcast on the Left’s Henry Zebrowski is working on an alien comedy called UFO: Unbelievably Friendly Organisms. Details are scarce, but the title alone already has us sold. From there, Gigi brings some sharp horror hot takes, we trade recommendations you’ll want to add to your watchlist immediately, and end up covering everything from comfort horror to movies that make you want to scream into the void.If you’re into horror news, spicy opinions, and finding your next favorite creepy flick, this one’s for you sooo...COME HANG OUT!!!
