A week before Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy take some festival trips, they have nine reviews for you over Labor Day weekend. There is so much physical media this week that Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski moved some of it to next week’s show. (You can still get them now.) Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski have the latest and greatest in physical media this week which includes a few personal favorites as well as not one, but two of the films they lobbied for on their “Why Is This Not On Blu-Ray?” shows. (TWIST: There are actually three – even without the songs.) The show includes a cameo from Odysseus from over a decade ago, one of John Ford’s lesser efforts and a wartime film with Gregory Peck. Peter was happy to see a strange Bogart film get the upgrade as was Erik with one of the best political satires ever and James L. Brooks’ infamous non-musical. A bit of a super-sized week of physical media (box sets will do that to you) but one worthy of appreciation and curiosity. Thankfully there are a number of very economical (in length) classics from the film noir era to appreciate. If you don’t already know one of the big plot twists of the ’70s sci-fi era you get your chance. You get one of the best films from the respective careers of Mario Bava and Elvis Presley. There is some early Wes Craven and late Tobe Hooper. Rock Hudson and Doris Day’s classic rom-com gets an upgrade. A brat packer become a serial killer (no, not Andrew McCarthy). WE GOT ONE of our Why-Is-This-Not-On-Blu-Ray titles, a classic farce from the 1980s. Plus, Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill is edited into one singular complete vision. Despite the news that Sony is no longer producing physical discs for its Playstation consoles, Blu-rays are not going anywhere. This week in physical media, Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski look at John Waters getting the Criterion treatment. There are a pair of middle-of-the-road (at best) upgrades for Adam Sandler as well as a film with his Bulletproof co-star. James Garner and Bruce Willis in a Hollywood western murder mystery misfire but thankfully Clint Eastwood is also here to save the day. After a week off, Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski return to catch you all up on the world of physical media. This week there are war films and after-war films, both with Gene Hackman. Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski take you through another week in physical media and it’s a pretty great week. The pair debate the legacy of a “prescient” media satire with the late, great Robert Duvall.
