Description: This episode features an interview from Oriana's archive - a 2016 discussion with feminist art foremother Martha Wilson whose audacious work explores appearance and subjectivity through self-representation, both live and to camera. Wilson's important work provocatively teases out the relationship between the personal, the institutional and the political to question gendered double standards. Making art in the context of the 1970s when Wilson first started, entailed acting as if she had the confidence to take on the identity of artist, despite creativity being misunderstood to be a male-only pursuit. Galvanised by her detractors instead of discouraged, Wilson's method of faking it to make it, as Oriana points out, is similar to a therapeutic tactic called 'shame attacking'. Therefore, the two discuss the potential for critical, feminist performance art to breed confidence, that is, if artists commit, as Wilson has done, to being anything but pleasant.  Martha Wilson is a pioneering feminist artist and gallery director, who over the past five decades created innovative photographic and video works that explore her female subjectivity through role-playing, costume transformations, and “invasions” of other people’s personae. Description: Artist Chinasa Vivian Ezugha discusses the performance piece Because of Hair, which was a springboard to her career as a performance artist and an activist. The piece entailed covering her face with a hair mask she had constructed as a sculptural object that, when worn, functioned as a catalyst for interpersonal and affective exchange, prompting myriad and often disturbingly violent reactions. Because of Hair reflects Ezugha's understanding of the politics of hair from her perspective as an Igbo woman living in Britain and also prompted her to make new work about the Biafran war, which deeply impacted her family. In other words, the interview explores how self-exposing performance art not only overlaps the personal with the political but also fosters the artist's confidence to have a political voice. This interview was carried out in 2017 as part of Oriana's research for her Phd on risky self-disclosure in performance art. Description: This episode is a double feature as it includes not one but two interviews Oriana carried out with the performance artist Hannah Ballou. Last year, Oriana spoke with Ballou after she had just completed filming Goo:Ga II, itself a sequel to her 2015 feminist live art comedy show Goo: Ga I, which playfully subverted the gender reveal party and announced the sex of her first child, a much-desired daughter. As Ballou explains, she always wanted to do a follow-up show. But due to Covid, Goo:Ga II had to be staged in an empty theatre for the camera. The hilarity of the first performance continues in the film sequel as a heavily pregnant Ballou, accompanied by her now 5-year old daughter in matching leopard-print bikinis, takes us through a vibrant dance routine, replete with a giant yoga ball that Ballou vogues with, making a spectacle of her bump, Meghan Markle-style. The mood swiftly changes though, as we learn that the gender binary paradigm is the least of this fetus' problems since being diagnosed with a very rare heart anomaly. The mood of Goo ga II darkens as Ballou grapples to keep hope at bay, not knowing if the pregnancy will come to term. It's a film that will literally make you laugh and cry. Oriana's follow-up interview with Ballou, which took place recently, i.e. 7 months after the first, finds Ballou with the relief of her baby boy alive and thriving, and with a string of upcoming film screenings to plug. Nina Power: What do men want?

Description: In this episode, I speak with philosopher Nina Power, author of One-Dimensional Woman (2009) whose upcoming book playfully asks "What do men want?" in a nod to Freud's famous question. In this discussion, Power sheds light on her research into the manosphere, in addition to touching upon her experience of being cancelled for her views on sex and gender. My main focus, however, was to find out if and how her research on men might relate to and expand on a past live episode of The O Show entitled "Time's up, penis down: Masculinity, sexuality and #metoo", which explores the ethics of desire and the shaming of men. As the conversation unfolds, Power decries the male suicide rate as a collective stain on our morality and sheds light on the appeal of Jordan Peterson. Political battles including the so-called 'battle of the sexes' (or should it be genders?) are all too often approached as zero-sum games with winners and losers. Seeking to undermine this tendency and find new solutions to shared problems is imperative, especially in light of the extreme polarisation in our contemporary moment. But it's impossible to make this move without actually talking to people with whom you disagree. In addition to this being a topic Power and I address, it also serves to explain my rationale, if you're wondering why I'm talking to someone who has been labelled a terf (trans exclusionary radical feminist). Fairytales, transgression and chasing waterfalls with Season Butler

In that initial discussion, they spoke about the racial empathy bias, climate change and Bill Cosby, each of which has played a key part in Butler’s work.
