Music at Madden’s Podcast #038 “The Dangerous Harpist & The Secret Melodies of Trees” with Ursula Burns
Welcome to another episode of Music at Madden’s Podcast with me, Lynette Fay.This week I’m joined by acclaimed harpist Ursula Burns, also known as The Dangerous Harpist, for a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation that moves between music, history, storytelling, and the natural world.Ursula shares the remarkable story behind Dougie MacLean’s iconic song Caledonia, and its unexpected connection to her own family in Lamhóid, offering a deeply personal insight into a song that has resonated across generations. We hear how Ursula quite literally fell into life as a harpist—touring with her mother before being handed a harp and quickly carving out her own path, leading to recording, touring, and developing a completely unique voice on the instrument. There’s a rich discussion around the cultural history of the harp, and how harpists were once seen as social commentators—voices of their time—something Ursula feels has been lost, but is still deeply relevant today. Her own playing, shaped by an unconventional background including circus performance, brings a fresh and distinctive energy to the tradition.Ursula also speaks about her beautiful album The Secret Melodies of Trees, exploring her connection to nature and the inspiration behind the music, as well as her current work on a powerful project centred on the life and legacy of Gráinne Mhaol—Grace O’Malley—the legendary Irish historical figure.A captivating conversation filled with music, history, and heart.

Music at Madden’s #033 | Dani Larkin on Songwriting, Folk Traditions & Finding Your Voice
Fresh from a visit to St Brigid’s shrine in Faughart on St Brigid’s Day, Armagh singer–songwriter Dani Larkin joins Lynette Fay in the snug at Madden’s for a conversation that feels both rooted and quietly rebellious.Proudly from the border village of Madden, Dani speaks about the strange freedom that can come from growing up on the edge - a place where, as she puts it, there’s a certain lawlessness that leaves space for imagination and creativity to roam. Along the way we discover a few surprises too… including Dani’s past life playing camogie for Co Armagh, (She played county!) and she offers her services as a support act for Westlife! At the heart of the conversation is Dani’s new album Next of Kin, the long-awaited follow-up to her debut Notes to a Maiden Warrior. Five years in the making, the record forms part of a trilogy that begins in darkness before moving toward light - music intended as a companion through the different stages of our lives. Music at Madden’s #032 – Ye Vagabonds | Recording Live, Favourite Albums & Why Meaning Matters
In Episode 32 of Music at Madden’s, we’re joined in the snug by acclaimed Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds — brothers Diarmuid and Brían Mac Gloinn from County Carlow — alongside band member Alain McFadden for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about collaboration, identity and meaningful music. The Carlow brothers reflect on how their upbringing shaped their love of traditional song, and they speak beautifully about their deep connection to Arranmore Island — a place that has profoundly influenced their musical spirit and sense of community. That island connection, they explain, feeds directly into the emotional core of their songwriting and harmony work.We dive into their collaboration with Boygenius, and what it meant to work alongside artists from a different musical landscape while still staying rooted in tradition. They also discuss the recording of their latest album, All Tied Together, and their commitment to capturing performances live in the room — prioritising presence, feel and honesty over studio perfection. With Alain contributing to the broader band dynamic, they share how important it is to let songs breathe and exist in real time.A particularly moving part of the conversation centres on what success actually means to them. While they touch on being name-dropped by actor Paul Mescal as his favourite band, they’re clear that awards and industry recognition pale in comparison to the moments when someone approaches them at the merch stall to say how deeply a song has resonated. For Ye Vagabonds, that human connection is everything. They also chat about their favourite albums of all time — the records that shaped their songwriting, harmony approach and philosophy around making music that lasts.Sponsors Jameson's Whiskeyhttps://www.jamesonwhiskey.com/en-gb/

Music At Madden’s Podcast #024 “Kitchen Table Sessions” with the McKenna Family
Welcome to another episode of Music At Madden’s Podcast with me, Lynette Fay.This week, the snug goes on the road — swapping Madden’s Bar in Belfast for Canavan’s of Garvaghy, County Tyrone, as Music At Madden’s records its first ever live episode at the inaugural Tyrone Tradfest. And for a Christmas special, there could only be one family around the table.Joined by Mary and Martin McKenna and their remarkable musical clan, this episode feels less like a podcast and more like Christmas Day at the kitchen table — full of tunes, yarns, slagging, and stories that spiral gloriously out of control. We talk about raising seven children steeped in traditional music; long car journeys to classes and fleadhs; sleeping bags, scaffolding, and sessions; and the quiet philosophy that shaped it all — no pressure, no expectations, just a deep love of music and community. There are tales of missed pickups, naked babies at the fleadh, Japanese sessions in caravans, alarm clocks that don’t work, siblings who definitely exaggerate stories, and a family dynamic where you have to be able to give the abuse as well as take it.At the heart of it all is something deeper: how traditional music builds families, friendships, and entire communities — across counties, borders, and generations. We also hear about the McKenna siblings’ upcoming debut album, recorded on their own terms, and why now feels like the right moment for it to arrive.Warm, hilarious, chaotic, and deeply moving — this is a celebration of tradition, family, and the people who keep the music alive.

Music at Madden’s Podcast #023 “Chunky Tunes & The Long Road to an Album” with Chunky Business
Welcome to a new episode of Music at Madden’s Podcast with me, Lynette Fay.This week in the snug, Lynette is joined by Chunky Business — accordion player Gary Curley and banjo player Stephen ‘Banjo’ McKee — for a joyful, wide-ranging conversation full of music, mishaps, and mighty tunes. The pair chat about their decade-long musical partnership, the meaning behind the word “chunky”, and finally getting their long-awaited debut album recorded — despite a run of unbelievable setbacks including double jaw surgery, a broken leg, and a nearly-lost finger. They talk about recording the album in Gary’s home studio, built by his father, and how sessions, friendship, and plenty of craic helped shape the finished sound.Gary and Stephen reflect on growing up in musical households, the importance of family and community in the traditional music scene, and how sessions around kitchen tables, local pubs, and county borders helped form their styles. From County Fermanagh to Armagh Pipers Club, university years, London sessions, and long drives for tunes, they explore how tradition is passed on — not just through music, but through people. There’s plenty of humour along the way too, from spicy fajitas fuelling one-take recordings, to banjo injuries, box-playing rivalries, and the realities of a long-distance musical relationship.A warm, funny, and deeply human episode about perseverance, place, and the joy of playing music together — recorded, as always, in the heart of Madden’s Bar.SponsorsBoatyard DistilleryInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/boatyarddistillery/Website: https://boatyarddistillery.com/Ardara Distillery – Ardara Malt WhiskeyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ardaradistillery/Website: https://sliabhliagdistillers.com/ardara-distillery/

Music At Maddens Podcast #022 “Chaos, Craic & Granny’s Songs” with The Mulhollands
Welcome to another episode of Music At Maddens Podcast with me, Lynette Fay.This week in the snug, Lynette welcomes The Mulhollands — or, as they affectionately call themselves, the Mullhooligans — a family whose music is only matched by their mischief. From the moment they sit down, the craic is flying: the slagging starts, the childhood stories spill out, and within minutes it feels like we’ve been transported straight to their kitchen table in Ballyheifer. We talk about growing up in a house where four instruments were always being played at once — often in different rooms, to different tunes — while the TV blared and cousins ran in and out. They share memories of Comhaltas classes, banjos discovered by accident, bodhráns accidentally driven over (and somehow surviving), late-night runs to summer schools, and the chaos that seemed to follow them everywhere they went. But at the heart of all that laughter is something deeply touching. The Mulhollands speak beautifully about their granny — the woman who fed them, minded them, clapped gently along to every tune, and held their musical world together. Her favourite song, The Braes of Moneymore, now carries a new weight since her passing, and the family reflect on the privilege of having played for her right up until the end. It’s clear that so much of their music, their humour, and their closeness comes from her.We explore the joy they find in singing together, the unspoken blend siblings can create, and how music has shaped their identity — through GAA pitches, Comhaltas halls, Pipers Club nights, competitions won, and friendships forged across counties.Full of mayhem, warmth, and the kind of storytelling only a tight-knit family can bring, this episode will have you laughing out loud one moment and swallowing a lump in your throat the next.If you love family harmonies, fast wit, and the kind of memories that make songs last a lifetime, you’re in for a treat.New episodes every Monday.SponsorsBoatyard DistilleryInstagram: / boatyarddistillery Website: https://boatyarddistillery.com/Ardara Distillery – Ardara Malt WhiskeyInstagram: / ardaradistillery Website: https://sliabhliagdistillers.com/arda...

Music At Maddens Podcast #020 “Trad Meets Truth” with Clare Sands
Welcome to a new episode of Music At Maddens Podcast with me, Lynette Fay.This week in the snug, Lynette welcomes Clare SandsA sixth-generation fiddler, bilingual singer, and fearless creative whose stories stretch from Cave Hill to the Bosphorus.Known for her boundary-crossing artistry and deep connection to place, Claire brings a voice that blends the mythic with the modern, where folklore, language, and activism meet melody. We talk about fearlessness as a practice, not a personality trait; about how the sea, woods, and wild places keep her compass steady; and about the quiet ritual of breaking bread before pressing record.Claire reflects on the rare creative kinship she shared with the late Manchán Magan, the power of old words in new songs, and how macaronic songwriting, weaving Irish and English, lets her unlock the emotional double meanings hidden in both. From Donegal cabins to Wicklow woods, from swimming the Asia-to-Europe strait to raise funds for Palestine, to crafting songs that carry community as much as melody, Claire’s world is one where music holds both grief and grace. We also face the hard truths of being an artist today, AI voice theft, streaming struggles, and the cost of speaking up, and why, for Claire, the answer is always community over isolation. If you care about Irish traditional music, language revival, creative courage, and songs that speak truth to power, this episode will stay with you long after it ends.New episodes every Monday.Maddens BarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/maddensbarbelfast_home_of_trad/Hatch BelfastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/belfasthatch/?hl=enAvalon GuitarsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/avalonguitarsofficial/Website: https://www.avalonguitars.com/Smithwicks Irish AleInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/smithwicks_ireland/Website: https://www.smithwicksexperience.com/

Welcome to a new episode of Music At Maddens Podcast with me, Lynette Fay.This week we welcome Trú to the podcast. This week in the snug, Lynette sits down with TrúA boundary-breaking vocal trio bringing new life to Ulster song through harmony, heart, and fearless storytelling.Formed out of Anúna, their sound blends choral precision with rock texture and emotional weight, guided by one question: why should this song be sung today? They trace their journey from learning to breathe as one voice to finding their “fresh ears” third member whose outsider perspective became their compass, less about reverence for the canon, more about making the old pulse again. We talk about learning Irish as adults and the shock of a language that suddenly fits, cultural agency that says inheritance isn’t the only passport, and writing “The Swan,” a spare, devastating original shaped by a Basque lullaby and the ache of losing a parent. From Newry ballads and aisling poetry to Scottish walking songs, from fundraising for Ukraine to dedicating “Rebel Song” to Palestine, Trú’s music turns heritage into something living, political, and deeply human. If you love Irish song, harmony that hits the spine, and stories that ask hard questions of tradition, this one will stay with you.Enjoy!New episodes every Monday.Maddens BarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/maddensbarbelfast_home_of_trad/Hatch BelfastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/belfasthatch/?hl=enAvalon GuitarsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/avalonguitarsofficial/Website: https://www.avalonguitars.com/Smithwicks Irish AleInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/smithwicks_ireland/Website: https://www.smithwicksexperience.com/

Tá suim as cuimse ag Fergus O’Hare sa cheol, san amhránaíocht ach go háirithe. Is iomaí ‘folk club’ atá curtha ar bun aige sa chathair fríd na blianta. Labhraíonn sé faoi chumhacht an cheoil le daoine a thabhairt le chéile, cuimhní cinn ar laetha ollscoile agus an tábhacht a bhaineann leis an Ghaeilge a labhairt agus a chur chun cinn.As the biggest celebration of the Irish language and indigenous arts returns to Belfast for the first time in 30 years, one of Belfast’s pioneers of language, community and music, Fergus O’Hare is our guest this week on the podcast. With his love of traditional songs, Fergus has been at the helm of many folk clubs in the city over the years. He talks about the power of music to bring people together, memories of music at university in Dublin and the importance and power of speaking and preserving Irish and indigenous languages. This week’s podcast is mostly in the Irish language.Enjoy!New episodes every Monday.Maddens BarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/maddensbarbelfast_home_of_trad/Hatch BelfastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/belfasthatch/?hl=enAvalon GuitarsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/avalonguitarsofficial/Website: https://www.avalonguitars.com/Smithwicks Irish AleInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/smithwicks_ireland/Website: https://www.smithwicksexperience.com/

Music At Maddens Podcast #016 - Slides, Smiles, And Sleeves with Greta Curtin
Welcome to a new episode of Music At Maddens Podcast with me, Lynette Fay.This week we welcome Greta Curtin to the podcast. This week in the snug, Lynette welcomes concertina player Greta Curtin for a lively tour of Slíabh Luachra style and the stories that shaped her music.Growing up in Brosna on the Kerry–Limerick–Cork border, Greta went from a TV fiddle that became a concertina to big mixed classes, sessions, and festivals that turned shyness into voice and community. She talks polkas and slides, how a tune like “Maggie in the Woods” can turn into “Mary in the Woods” a half hour up the road, choosing gigs over kitchen shifts, teaching in a music school, and watching her students become the next wave. In her work as a special needs assistant, music is a bridge: sometimes a hallway guitar, sometimes just the right pause, always a way to help a child feel seen.We also dive into the Patrick O’Keeffe Festival in Castleisland: a session trail from morning into morning, album launches, archives, and a youth award that invites players from Donegal to Dublin to learn a Slíabh Luachra set with care. With a nod to Brosna football pride, quiet All-Ireland wins, and the occasional bout of imposter syndrome, this is a warm, witty portrait of tradition that’s brilliantly alive.Enjoy!New episodes every Monday.Maddens BarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/maddensbarbelfast_home_of_trad/Hatch BelfastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/belfasthatch/?hl=enAvalon GuitarsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/avalonguitarsofficial/Website: https://www.avalonguitars.com/Smithwicks Irish AleInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/smithwicks_ireland/Website: https://www.smithwicksexperience.com/

Music At Maddens Podcast #006 - Fiddles, Family & Finding Your Voice with Sinéad McKenna
Welcome to a new episode of Music At Maddens Podcast with me, Lynette Fay.This week we welcome Sinéad McKenna to the podcast.Nestled in the rolling hills of the Clogher Valley, where County Tyrone meets Monaghan, a most unusual musical incubator took shape - a converted chapel where the McKenna family raised seven children, each one a musician. Fiddle player, singer and composer Sinead McKenna takes us on a captivating journey through this extraordinary upbringing, where tunes and songs were as natural as breathing. From first picking up the fiddle under her parents' gentle encouragement to playing at festivals and sessions across Ireland, Sinead reveals how deeply the musical traditions of her borderland home have shaped her artistic voice. The conversation weaves through cherished memories of learning from older musicians who carried tunes learned by ear from radio broadcasts, and how these experiences instilled in her a profound respect for the stories behind the music. The path from family sessions to acclaimed performer wasn't without challenges. Moving to Belfast meant stepping out from behind the protective circle of her brothers at sessions, finding her own voice as both musician and performer. The pandemic period became unexpectedly transformative, rekindling Sinead's appreciation for musical community and spurring her creative development through projects like the Duncairn Collective. With disarming honesty, Sinead shares the vulnerability she felt while creating her debut album, describing herself as "such a bluffer" navigating the unfamiliar territories of promotion and business. This authenticity extends to her evolving stage presence, where initial nervousness has blossomed into confident storytelling and connection. As Sinead prepares for international performances in France and Japan, her story reminds us that tradition isn't merely preserved - it's constantly renewed through the authentic voices of those who carry it forward.
