'Better Days' is an electronic, deep, melodic house journey about hope. I remember this because I (very creatively) titled the track 'New Beginnings'. For the longest time, 'Better Days' was a bit chaotic – there was a lot of reverb, echoes and compression, but I liked the way it sounded. The idea of 'New Beginnings' was twofold for me. I completed this track in early 2020, which coincided with my moving to Melbourne to study my Master's degree. I remember my first day in Melbourne, recording everything to use as footage for the music video; alas, it never came to be seeing as how I ended up in and out of lockdown for two years. The title reflects that. We're in better days now. When I was in it, it didn't feel like there were any better days. It didn't feel like new beginnings. To be honest, it didn't feel like anything at all. But you realise, usually after the fact, that it's temporary. Better days are always ahead. The photo for 'Better Days' is from Federation Square, and is a picture of one of the steeples of Southern Cross Station. It was on a day where I was out with a friend of mine, walking and talking – it doesn't sound like much, but there was joy and laughter and stupid fun. Simple things. Things that reminded me that, yes, we are in better days now. 'Solace' is about love. It's about finding love in others, it's about accepting that love, and learning to love yourself when that love is no longer there. I re-watched The Good Place recently. The video (on YouTube) is ispired by Chidi's speech to Eleanor at the very end: 'Picture a wave. In the ocean. You can see it, measure it, its height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. And it's there. And you can see it, you know what it is. It's a wave. And then it crashes in the shore and it's gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be, for a little while. You know it's one conception of death for Buddhists: the wave returns to the ocean, where it came from and where it's supposed to be.' Love is something similar. You can try to hold on to the wave as much as you want, but sometimes the wave will stop being a wave. It doesn't mean the love is gone – it's just different now. It's okay to miss the wave and give it value. It's okay to want it again. You'll make peace with it all, in the end. We loved each other before the wave and we will love each other after it. Out now. Isolation is now available on all streaming platforms! I made 'Isolation' during the final lockdown in Melbourne in 2021. Even as I write this, I hear echoes of what I wrote for my previous release, 'The Space Between', which was created in a similar environment. I wanted to explore that feeling of repetition, that feeling of isolation and inertia, through the music I put together for this track. It's the way I've felt since coming to Melbourne; the irony of the situation being that I came here for a fresh start. There are a lot of elements that adhere to this idea of inertia. To name a few: the synth pad that drones through the track, the movement of the pluck, constantly stuck within its finite loop, speeding up, slowing down, always moving, never going anywhere. Yet, all is not lost. There is growth in repetition and isolation. One cannot fight the circumstances of change. One cannot control their environment, only their own self. One of the greatest things I learned in the last two years is to accept what I cannot change and deal with the situation at hand however I can. I have a lot more coming for 2022.
