During the COVID-19 lockdowns, to deal with isolation and lack of live theatre, we started gathering some of our favourite people every Tuesday & Saturday night to read scripts over Zoom. We read all 38 Shakespeare plays in six months. Then we kept going. Before we announce the winners of our 2024 Critics’ Pick Awards, we’re proud to present our annual Nominee Interview Series.   I saw 40 plays at the 2024 Toronto Fringe Festival and my very favourite was a deeply strange clown two-hander about Albertan rats. Creative, heartfelt, and executed brilliantly, Rat Academy is a perfect example of why it’s important to take risks at the theatre, or at least at the Fringe. Specializing in intimate and complex musical theatre, Bowtie produced two of the nominated shows in this year’s Critics’ Pick Awards. In addition to Taylor Long’s nomination for their spring production of Falsettos, Bowtie scored two nods for their ambitious fall show Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Outstanding Production and Outstanding Performance for Jessie James). In this episode, we took on Molière's timeless takedown of religious hypocrisy Tartuffe.

To help cope with isolation during COVID-19 quarantines, we brought together a group of theatre lovers to perform cold readings of some of our favourite scripts over Zoom. We began with the complete works of Shakespeare then expanded, eventually tackling nearly 100 different texts over the course of two years. Corona Cold Reads, along with Corona Movie Club, kept us sane through the pandemic and fostered a sense of community when we couldn’t actively participate in our local ones.   Up next is a little mini-season featuring a few classics from the French theatrical canon (in English translation of course). To begin, we chose the sublime Cyrano de Bergerac, often thought of as the greatest piece of French theatre. The runtime is epic, the cast is sprawling, the story is not to be missed. We finished work on the Nominee Interview Series even though the live event for our yearly Critics’ Pick Awards had to be cancelled (we’ve still got trophies to give out, eventually). We started the Corona Movie Club to help curb our boredom and constant need to talk about movies with other human beings. I’m even watching network procedurals and actually writing about them.   But what we all really need is comfort. We need our favourite things and our favourite people and right now those are hard to come by so we have to do everything we can to bring them together whenever possible. Our solution was to gather some of our favourite people every Saturday night throughout quarantine to read scripts over Zoom. We read all 38 Shakespeare plays in six months. Then we kept going. We decided to create mini-seasons featuring highlights from the canons of major writers across generations, plus a few bonus episodes thrown in. There’s a lot more to come, so stay tuned.   After our Twentieth Century Classics season, we decided to take on an ambitious two-part coda in the form of Tony Kusher’s seminal Angels in America. About the Favourites Series: One of our favourite things is to listen to our favourite people talk about their favourite things. In this series, we’ll be inviting some awesome guest contributors to talk to or about their favourite people in art and entertainment. We hope you love it as much as our guests love the art and artists they’re here to talk about.   About this Episode: There are a decent number of ubiquitous faces in Toronto theatre- actors and producers and artistic directors you’re bound to be familiar with if you frequent the city’s main venues. But those of us who see upwards of a hundred shows a year, for us its the audience mainstays who become the faces we look for. If you see a lot of theatre in Toronto, there is simply no way you’ve never sat in an audience alongside Barbara Fingerote. She’s the city’s most devoted aficionado with an encyclopedic memory and an open mind to check out pretty much anything gracing the city’s stages. Perched contentedly in her usual spot in the front row, when she isn’t volunteering with front of house, Barbara is the most constant presence in the Toronto theatre community so we don’t feel it’s a stretch to call her the scene’s biggest fan.   She’s one of our favourite people to talk about theatre with so we thought she’d be the perfect person to host her own episode of the Favourites Series. When we made our way through the 8-play Henriad back in May 2020, we took a goofy detour around Henry the 4th Part 2. It was my birthday so we celebrated by chopping up all the roles and inviting dozens more friends to join the cast. We had 90 readers, a drinking game, and a ton of fun, but it didn’t result in a particularly coherent recording of the play to place in the rest of our full canon. So we’re giving it another go with a bit more gravitas and as close to our original Henriad casting as possible. These are crazy times and we’ve all taken on a bunch of new projects as we socially isolate in order to help stop the spread of Covid-19.   We’re donating where we can, we’re cleaning the pantry, we’re organizing the 2300+ title dvd library. We finished work on the Nominee Interview Series even though the live event for our yearly Critics’ Pick Awards had to be cancelled (we’ve still got trophies to give out, eventually). We started the Corona Movie Club to help curb our boredom and constant need to talk about movies with other human beings. I’m even watching network procedurals and actually writing about them.   But what we all really need is comfort. We need our favourite things and our favourite people and right now those are hard to come by so we have to do everything we can to bring them together whenever possible. Our solution was to gather some of our favourite people every Saturday night throughout quarantine to read scripts over Zoom. We read all 38 Shakespeare plays in six months. Then we kept going. We decided to create mini-seasons featuring highlights from the canons of major writers across generations, plus a few bonus episodes thrown in.
