My Rhetorical Life

by Melissa

To Cicero, rhetoric it is about the development of five canons: invention, arrangement, elocution, memory, and delivery. When we develop these canons, we are developing as writers, thinkers, and communicators. And because writing is so much about connecting with ourselves, I developed these canons as a metaphor to look at my life as a writer. So join me as I journey back in and throughout time and share how I have developed my voice.

Episodes

  1. Genre Analysis Discussion on IEPs

In this episode, I interview a dear friend about the affordances and constraints of an Individualized Education Plan. We are discussing a genre analysis of IEPs and how effective they are in the classroom for gifted students.

  2. Failure is the new success.

In response to a college writing assignment, I reflect upon failing and find value and purpose. Sometimes it might just be better to lower the bar.

  3. In Conversation with Amanda, Joan, and Martha

In this episode Amanda and I tell about the two books we are currently reading. We invite the words of Joan Didion and Martha Beck to wash over us as we "stand under" or listen to what they have to say about writing, thinking, growing, and life.

  4. Listening to Amanda

Krista Radcliffe says, "We need to listen to the stories of others because people really learn from the sharing of experiences." So, here is my convesation with my dear friend. My hope is that you will hear a little of yourself in this conversation - or even a btter version of you - as you listen...

  5. Episode 5: Delivery

The final canon of rhetoric is known as delivery. This might mean writing a novel or a newspaper article. It is when your writing takes form and meets the world.

  6. Episode 4: Memory

Canon four looks at memory and the role of hearing other voices in our heads. We furnish our minds with great writing so we have a model to turn to for guidance.

  7. Episode 3: Style

In episode three I discuss elocution and how I found my style in the classroom. Writing of course plays a huge role in my classroom style.

  8. Episode 2: Arrangement

This canon of rhetoric is about becoming. Through reflection and movement, ideas can be moved to create a stronger text. In this section you will hear how writing helped me define my voice and become a teacher.
