Nanobrew - Small Business Shenanigans

Nanobrew (the Podcast) is hosted by Jason Wuerfel, owner/operator of Books & Brews, a combination used bookstore and nanobrewery in Indianapolis, Indiana. Join Jason and his trusty brewers Joel and Bryan as they give you an insight into what it's like to start a nanobrewery, give you small business tips, talk to interesting people, and have a few pints while chatting about books, brews, movies, games, and other topics.

  1. 96

    Matthew Mcconaughy's Greenlights

The gang is back! Holy hell I love this podcast so much! Thank you so much to Bryan, Lauren, and Pete for coming back and joining me on this crazy thing called Nanobrew: The Podcast.  On this episode, the gang talks about "manifesting" success along the lines of Matthew McConaughey's memoir "Greenlights." This episode has a little bit of everything - old business, new business, art in your face, beef of the week, and everything in between!

  2. 95

    Brass Monkey Review

Back in the day Murder Shoes Max leads "Reviews by a 21-year-old" for our review for Brass Monkey. Per the Funky Boss, "This tastes like something Jonah Hill would give a girl in Superbad."

  3. 94

How to Build a Second Life

This clip comes from Nanobrew's 6th episode ever back in 2015 with the super-original crew of Jason, Joel, and Bryan. In this throwback micro-content Jason describes one of the big motivators of the original concept that helped defined the Books & Brews business model.

  4. 93

    Unhappiness Isn't Sustainable

In this micro-content throwback clip, Jason tells the story of when he heard a speaker that would alter the course of his career. This clip is from the early days of Nanobrew: The Podcast circa 2015.

  5. 92

    Win Aggressive, Lose Aggressive

This micro-content throwback from 2014 highlights our concept "Doing business on the Nanoscale: Win Aggressive, Lose Aggressive." The net change is always positive. Shout out to Brad Sprauer one of the original supporters of Books & Brews that helped get us up and on our feet.

  6. 91

    The #1 Reason Entrepreneurs Fail

The gang is back talking about the #1 reason most entrepreneurs fail. We were pretty well behaved on this podcast until the beer started to kick in for the second half.

  7. 90

    Identity Crisis with Ugly Pete

The Funky Boss brings up an interesting topic of Timecop and Ugly Pete: who are we as people? How do we measure self worth? How do we judge ourselves? If people deny the way we identify ourselves does that lower our self worth?  This sounds very technical but most of the time it's fart jokes like you're used to with Nanobrew. Cheers!

  8. 89

    Unedited Training Jargon

Timecop and The Funky Boss welcome the Hoffmeister to the podcast to beef on people who say they want to be trained but actually....don't care (to put it lightly). If you're a round peg in a square hole? No amount of square training is going to make you a square. Move on, be happy, cut your losses, and stop being a crybaby about being a square world WHEN YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY A ROUND PEG.

  9. 88

    Throwback Episode - Employee Appreciation

If you hang in there until the end of this episode you get to hear Jason cry his eyes out talking about how much he loves and appreciates his employees. Side note - he doesn't need to drink to get emotional but it helps. The back story is the gang forgets to eat lunch or dinner then proceeds to drinking way too much and sprawling, long-winded shenanigans pursue. We cut out a large portion of this podcast and it's still insanely long. I hope you get a few giggles and gives you some insight into the history of B&B and how much we love we what we do.

  10. 87

    Make Money, Money, Money!

Originally recorded in the summer of 2017 when Books & Brews was blasting off, the Funky Boss gives his #1 advice for starting a business and making a money, which is, to quote Timecop, "Ballin on a Budget!" This is the tip: 90/10 rule - 90% of your time brings money into the business, 10% of the time saving money. Listen for more ridiculous shenanigans, beat boxing, and a blast from the past.

  11. 86

This is Marketing by Seth Godin

On this episode of Nanobrew: The Podcast, the Funky Boss talks about the book, "This is Marketing," by Seth Godin, Timecop gives his review of the reality show Love at First Sight, and Burnsie comes by to once again beef on Pistol Pete. The gang also solves the question - who would win in a Celebrity Deathmatch: the Blue Man Group or the Jabbawockeez.

  12. 85

    Know Your Enemy!

The Funky Boss, Timecop, and Murder Shoes Max wax intellectual about business, life, movies, and hip hop, as per usual. Jason talks about how dumb people are making lots of money and how much business owners have no idea who their real competitors are.

  13. 84

    Radical Candor by Kim Scott

The dynamic duo of the Funky Boss and Timecop are back to chat about sci-fi movies, having radical candor, really bad dreams, and plenty of other small business shenanigans. Jason describes how learning to deal with owning a business while being a literal person is difficult.

  14. 83

The Shout Out Episode (Throwback #1)

Throwback episode from March 6th, 2016, where the original trio of the Funky Boss, Timecop, and Murder Shoes Max give shout outs to the guests that helped get Books & Brews reach the starting point of their explosive growth in 2016. Jason tells the story of taking regulars Guy, Pete, and Komal, to go see the Zionsville space that become B&B's 2nd location.

  15. 82

    The Boss is a Dick

The gang is back with the Funky Boss, Timecop, and Burnsie to discuss why the boss is always a dick.

  16. 81

Getting Drunk with Ben and Ugly Pete

Ben from Zionsville stops by and the Funky Boss and Timecop immediately derail any sense of coherent conversation (sorry, Ben). We do get a chance to be serious for a hot minute in the middle about charisma - and how most think it's a wasted stat in both D&D and life.  Oh boy, then Ben has to go and Ugly Pete comes on for the second half of the show. I had to cut a solid 30 minutes out because this went long as we are terrible people (sorry, mom).

  17. 80

    Having a Competitive Edge

Books & Brews Operations Specialist Tyler Danner drops by the podcast and discusses why it's important to have a competitive edge in life, business, and baseball (everyone drink)

  18. 79

    Sarah Burns Smokes Weed

Nanobrew: The Podcast's Reunion tour continues with our #2 most frequented guest ever, Sarah Burns, returns to the show to talk about Super Heroes, Disney movies, heavy metal, and Mexican candy. Shenanigans, bad words, beer, candy, Disney, Marvel, stuff. A Nanobrew classic.

  19. 78

    Nanobrew Reunion Show

The Best of Nanobrew - Beatboxing Intros

Back in 2015-2016 when we used to get -super- drunk every episode (sorry, mom) we would beatbox into every segment and always mix up the different styles (kind of). Here is just a small sample I put together to relive the glory days when things were much simpler around here! I hope you enjoy!
