Is Integration Costing Black America Its Power?

On episode 131 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers field a listener question about whether it's worth voting when the ballot offers no candidate who actually represents her. It’s an especially potent question in light of redistricting, the recent Supreme Court gutting of the Voting Rights Act, and the chaos of states redrawing maps in the middle of an election cycle. FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS: GOP Rep. Jen Kiggans laughed and said "yes, yes to that" while a radio host told Hakeem Jeffries to "get your cotton-picking hands off of Virginia." Kiggans later claimed she didn't hear the "cotton-picking" line. Jeffries is calling for her resignation. All six conservative Supreme Court justices attended Trump's state dinner honoring King Charles the night before the Louisiana voting rights decision dropped — a ruling that further guts the Voting Rights Act of 1965. A new study found that people who regularly engage with arts and culture — reading, listening to music, visiting museums — may biologically age slower. The effect may even equal regular exercise. A suit has been filed against OpenAI over ChatGPT's alleged role in the Florida State University shooting that killed two people.  Trump is calling Black women reporters names when asked questions he doesn’t like. First he called Rachel Scott of ABC a “b**ch” and then he called Akayla Gardner of MS NOW a “dumb person.” How does one even respond? Also, please join the All Roads Lead to the South event in Montgomery this Saturday! More information can be found here.   MORE:  Read the federal civil complaint for the above OpenAI lawsuit. The Quietest Coup in American History Is Happening Right Now ft. Elie Mystal

On episode 130 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by guest Elie Mystal.    Elie Mystal is an author, commentator, and the justice correspondent for The Nation. His fiery prose on the Supreme Court and legal issues writ large are unmatched, and in a seismic week for voting rights America, it’s a good time to welcome Elie home.    The Supreme Court has fast-tracked their recent ruling which gutted what remained of the Voting Rights Act. They are allowing Southern states to change their electoral maps BEFORE the midterm elections, which will almost certainly dilute Black voting power. Our SCOTUS expert, Elie Mystal, weighs in.  FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS:   1. Primary Results in Ohio and Indiana test President Trump’s influence on Republican Primaries.    2. The Detroit News caught a Michigan Senate candidate calling for intimidation at Detroit polling precincts.    3. Trump’s Medicaid cuts are becoming a reality in Nebraska, where they went into effect on May 1st. It will be the first test of how many people lose their insurance due to new work requirements.    4. Trump Praises the Confederate General, Robert E. Lee, and says that he almost won the Civil War.    5. South Carolina State University rescinded an invitation to SC’s Lt. Governor Pamela Evette to speak at graduation. In response, South Carolina Republican officials threatened to pull SCSU’s funding.    6. On Sunday, a federal judge reinstated New Orleans Court Clerk, Calvin Duncan. But then Louisiana won an appeal with the 5th US Circuit Court to keep Duncan out of office… for now. A Love Letter to Black Women Surviving Betrayal | NLP Replay

The last decade of Tiffany Cross’ life has seen heartbreak and betrayal, moving through failed relationships at the same time her country turned its back on her. In her new book, Love, Me, Tiffany writes about how she came home to herself.    Tiffany’s book is a love letter to Black women in the struggle. She sees some of that struggle in the recent drama between basketball star Klay Thompson, and his (former) girlfriend, rapper Meg thee Stallion.    Join hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers, along with Tiffany Cross for this segment from episode #129 that aired on 04-30-26   If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all!    —--------- —--------- We want to hear from you! Who Deserves the Death Penalty? | MiniPod

Host Bakari Sellers knew he was against the death penalty–until white supremacist Dylann Roof killed 9 people at the African Methodist Episocpal Church in Charleston, South Carolina during a bible study.    According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Black Americans are 7.5 times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of murder than whites. The Equal Justice Initiative has shown that for every 8 people executed on death row, 1 is exonerated. At times, maybe death is justice, but the administration of that justice is problematic, particularly in a racist justice system.    Our hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari talk each other through complicated feelings around capital punishment.     Stay updated on James Broadnax’s case @justiceforjamesbroadnax on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justiceforjamesbroadnax/   If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! The New Terms & Conditions of Black Voting Rights ft. Tiffany Cross

On episode 129 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by the one-and-only TIFFANY CROSS!!    Renowned journalist, author, and former-NLP host, Tiffany Cross, rejoins the crew for a day to talk about the ongoing redistricting war AND tell us about her new book Love, Me.    The redistricting wars swung in the direction of Republicans at the Supreme Court this week. SCOTUS heard arguments in Louisiana v. Callais, and allowed Louisiana to redraw its electoral map, removing a majority Black district, and rewriting the Voting Rights Act. This bellwether case will probably inspire similar redistricting moves in other Southern states. Our hosts take a look at how this affects the midterms and Black representation in Congress.    The last decade of Tiffany Cross’ life has seen heartbreak and betrayal, moving through failed relationships at the same time her country turned its back on her. Her new book, Love, ME is a letter to Black women in a toxic country, career, and relationship. Find it wherever books are sold.  FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS   1. Pursuing Justice for Big Sam ft. DJ Quicksilva | Angela Rye SoloPod

Baltimore County Police Officer Derek Hadel was called to do a wellness check on Samuel “Big Sam” Brown last month. The encounter ended with the officer knocking Brown into the pavement, causing severe brain damage, and eventually death. Officer Hadel is under investigation for police misconduct.    It turns out this isn’t the first time Officer Hadel has been investigated for misconduct. In 2023, he crashed a police car in a “preventable at-fault” incident, but maintained his employment.    Host Angela Rye’s guest for today is DJ Quicksilva. Big Sam was Quicksilva’s tour manager and is running the Justice For Big Sam campaign.    CALL THE BALTIMORE ATTORNEY GENERAL, ask them to press charges on Officer Hadel: (410) 576-7070   READ MORE:    https://www.thebanner.com/community/local-news/baltimore-county-police-samuel-brown-derek-hadel-7J5XF3EWBVHKRAZGYQWD7NRE4A/ Want to ask Angela a question? Easter Came with War Threats | Angela Rye SoloPod

President Trump has made headlines across the world for doubling down on threats to “send Iran back to the stone age” and bomb ALL of their infrastructure: railways, powerplants, bridges, etc. Destroying civilian infrastructure is a war crime according to the Geneva Conventions (which apparently doesn’t mean anything anymore).    Even Conservatives like Tucker Carlson, Majorie Taylor Green, and nut-case-in-chief Alex Jones have expressed alarm at Trump’s threats. In today's episode, host Angela Rye takes us on a journey into the mirror world of conservative media, to see how they’re responding to Trump's war with Iran.    Iran has promised to retaliate against attacks on its infrastructure by attacking the oil and water infrastructure of neighboring gulf countries, which would likely cause a global humanitarian and economic catastrophe.     Want to ask Angela a question? Far-right strategist and conspiracy-podcast host, Steph Bannon, has said the quiet part out loud: ICE is being groomed to police the polls. The viral propaganda that Bannon pushes has empowered folks like CA Sheriff Chad Bianco to pursue phony election investigations; he’s confiscated hundreds of thousands of ballots that will be used to produce more conspiracy content, and boost the sheriff’s gubernatorial campaign.     Meanwhile, Republicans struggle to pass the SAVE Act, which would curtail millions of Americans' right to vote, and the Supreme Court seems ready to put restrictions on mail-in ballots. It’s a xenophobic reinterpretation of so-called “Voter ID” laws which conservatives have pushed for decades to reduce the voting power of mostly poor and minority communities. They believe that high voter turnout in elections benefits Democrats.    The Senate is debating the SAVE act today, it’s already passed through the House.    Mandatory Disclaimer: there is no evidence of non-citizens voting at a scale large enough to impact U.S. elections.    Want to ask Angela a question? Did Iran Just Activate Their Sleeper Cells? | Bakari Sellers SoloPod

On this week’s SoloPod, the United States lied about its involvement with the bombing of a girl’s school in Iran. Why Trump Wants War with Iran | NLP Replay

President Trump made his case for war with Iran during his State of the Union Address on Tuesday. He said we “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capability in strikes last summer, but we need to go back to obliterate it again, or they’ll shoot a missile at the US (it doesn’t make sense). In any case, the US has assembled its largest strike force in the Middle East since the build-up to the Iraq war.    Join hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers, along with guest-host Reecie Colbert, for this segment from episode #120 that aired on 02-26-26    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! The N-Word at BAFTA | MiniPod

John Davidson has tourettes, specifically “coprolalia,” a kind of vocal tic that causes a person to compulsively say socially inappropriate things. His condition exploded into public consciousness, first with a movie based on John Davidson’s life, and then again when John shouted the N-word at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo at the BAFTA movie awards.    The unfortunate incident has elicited outrage from defenders of racial justice and the disabled community alike. Many folks online are putting the blame in the wrong place (and there is a place to put it). We can hold understanding for disabilities AND acknowledge the harm this language causes the Black community.    Our guest, Jumaane D. Williams, was the first person with tourettes to hold public office. He has served as Public Advocate since 2019, and as Council Member for the 45th District in Brooklyn beginning in 2010. He has passed more legislation than all previous Public Advocates combined.    Join our hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers, along with guest-host Reecie Colbert.   If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    Welcome home y’all!  —--------- We want to hear from you! I Am Somebody: Remembering Reverend Jesse Jackson feat. Jamal Bryant

On episode 119 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers team up with guest-host Dr. Reverend Jamal Bryant.    Pastor Bryant held a groundbreaking joint sermon recently with his wife, Karri Bryant, for Valentines day. They cracked jokes and shared their wisdom for how to make a relationship last, which we’ll pass on to you. Then Pastor Bryant holds space for us as we remember another reverend, Jesse Jackson, who passed away Tuesday, February 17th.    FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS:   Early voting sites are being removed from North Carolina Universities, disenfranchising Black students.   The SAVE Act heads to the Senate, the “Voter ID Law” threatens voting rights.    DHS Secretary Kristi Noem says DHS Will Help “Secure” Elections.    The Olympic Village has run out of the 10,000 condoms it supples to athletes.    Five Black surgeons lead the trauma unit at the prestigious Johns Hopkins hospital for the first time.    We dedicate the majority of our show today to Reverend Jesse Jackson. Reverend Jackson had a knack for showing up wherever Black folks were organizing; he showed up for our hosts multiple times to offer his support and mentorship. We’ll hear their personal stories about the reverend and more from his fabled life: Reverend Jackson grew up in poverty before rising through the church to carry on the work of MLK Jr., his mentor. He ran for president in the 80’s (which set the stage for Obama), championed progressive causes that were far ahead of his time, and created broad political alliances that last to this day.
