Native Land Pod

In the spirit of the last stanza of the Black National Anthem, we rise from the past, rooted deeply in the soil of ancestral struggles, to build a home, to claim our space. On Native Land Pod, Angela Rye, Bakari Sellers, and Andrew Gillum guide us through the political landscape, wielding insights and unapologetic analysis, unraveling the threads that connect Black Americans and marginalized communities to a place they courageously call home.In each episode, Angela, Bakari, and Andrew embark on a journey of reflection, taking stock of the news of the week and the country's road to the polls.Join us each week as we navigate the dance between past and present, weaving a narrative of hope, empowerment, and the unyielding strength that defines the journey to reclaim 'Native Land.' This isn't just news analysis; it's a movement, a conversation, and a testament to the power of those who dare to rebuild and redefine the meaning of home.  Talk to us:Angela Rye @angelaryeAndrew Gillum @an

Is Integration Costing Black America Its Power?

On episode 131 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers field a listener question about whether it's worth voting when the ballot offers no candidate who actually represents her. It’s an especially potent question in light of redistricting, the recent Supreme Court gutting of the Voting Rights Act, and the chaos of states redrawing maps in the middle of an election cycle. FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS: GOP Rep. Jen Kiggans laughed and said "yes, yes to that" while a radio host told Hakeem Jeffries to "get your cotton-picking hands off of Virginia." Kiggans later claimed she didn't hear the "cotton-picking" line. Jeffries is calling for her resignation. All six conservative Supreme Court justices attended Trump's state dinner honoring King Charles the night before the Louisiana voting rights decision dropped — a ruling that further guts the Voting Rights Act of 1965. A new study found that people who regularly engage with arts and culture — reading, listening to music, visiting museums — may biologically age slower. The effect may even equal regular exercise. A suit has been filed against OpenAI over ChatGPT's alleged role in the Florida State University shooting that killed two people.  Trump is calling Black women reporters names when asked questions he doesn’t like. The Quietest Coup in American History Is Happening Right Now ft. Elie Mystal

On episode 130 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by guest Elie Mystal.    Elie Mystal is an author, commentator, and the justice correspondent for The Nation. His fiery prose on the Supreme Court and legal issues writ large are unmatched, and in a seismic week for voting rights America, it’s a good time to welcome Elie home.    The Supreme Court has fast-tracked their recent ruling which gutted what remained of the Voting Rights Act. They are allowing Southern states to change their electoral maps BEFORE the midterm elections, which will almost certainly dilute Black voting power. Our SCOTUS expert, Elie Mystal, weighs in.  FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS:   1. Primary Results in Ohio and Indiana test President Trump’s influence on Republican Primaries.    2. The Detroit News caught a Michigan Senate candidate calling for intimidation at Detroit polling precincts.    3. Trump’s Medicaid cuts are becoming a reality in Nebraska, where they went into effect on May 1st. It will be the first test of how many people lose their insurance due to new work requirements.    4. Trump Praises the Confederate General, Robert E. Lee, and says that he almost won the Civil War.    5. South Carolina State University rescinded an invitation to SC’s Lt. Governor Pamela Evette to speak at graduation. In response, South Carolina Republican officials threatened to pull SCSU’s funding.    6. On Sunday, a federal judge reinstated New Orleans Court Clerk, Calvin Duncan. But then Louisiana won an appeal with the 5th US Circuit Court to keep Duncan out of office… for now. Calvin Duncan was democratically elected, winning 68% of the vote.    READ MORE:    Callais is a J6er: https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/bert-callais-plaintiff-case-gutted-voting-rights-act-election-conspiracist-jan-6/    Bakari on SCSU v. the Lt. Voting Rights Where? | Angela Rye SoloPod

The Supreme Court just fast-tracked its latest ruling striking down a key part of the Voting Rights Act, opening the door for southern states to redraw their electoral maps BEFORE the midterm elections. The new electoral maps will almost certainly dilute the voting power of southern Black Americans.    Want to ask Angela a question? A Love Letter to Black Women Surviving Betrayal | NLP Replay

The last decade of Tiffany Cross’ life has seen heartbreak and betrayal, moving through failed relationships at the same time her country turned its back on her. In her new book, Love, Me, Tiffany writes about how she came home to herself.    Tiffany’s book is a love letter to Black women in the struggle. She sees some of that struggle in the recent drama between basketball star Klay Thompson, and his (former) girlfriend, rapper Meg thee Stallion.    Join hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers, along with Tiffany Cross for this segment from episode #129 that aired on 04-30-26   If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all!    —--------- —--------- We want to hear from you! Who Deserves the Death Penalty? | MiniPod

Host Bakari Sellers knew he was against the death penalty–until white supremacist Dylann Roof killed 9 people at the African Methodist Episocpal Church in Charleston, South Carolina during a bible study.    According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Black Americans are 7.5 times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of murder than whites. The Equal Justice Initiative has shown that for every 8 people executed on death row, 1 is exonerated. At times, maybe death is justice, but the administration of that justice is problematic, particularly in a racist justice system.    Our hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari talk each other through complicated feelings around capital punishment.     Stay updated on James Broadnax’s case @justiceforjamesbroadnax on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justiceforjamesbroadnax/   If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! The New Terms & Conditions of Black Voting Rights ft. Tiffany Cross

On episode 129 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by the one-and-only TIFFANY CROSS!!    Renowned journalist, author, and former-NLP host, Tiffany Cross, rejoins the crew for a day to talk about the ongoing redistricting war AND tell us about her new book Love, Me.    The redistricting wars swung in the direction of Republicans at the Supreme Court this week. SCOTUS heard arguments in Louisiana v. Callais, and allowed Louisiana to redraw its electoral map, removing a majority Black district, and rewriting the Voting Rights Act. This bellwether case will probably inspire similar redistricting moves in other Southern states. Our hosts take a look at how this affects the midterms and Black representation in Congress.    The last decade of Tiffany Cross’ life has seen heartbreak and betrayal, moving through failed relationships at the same time her country turned its back on her. Her new book, Love, ME is a letter to Black women in a toxic country, career, and relationship. Find it wherever books are sold.  FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS   1.
