OTHELLO ANALYSIS BY KISII UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

EPISODE TOPIC: OTHELLO – JEALOUSY, MANIPULATION, TRUST AND TRAGEDYWilliam Shakespeare’s Othello is one of the most powerful tragedies ever written about love, trust, jealousy, manipulation, insecurity and betrayal. Although the play was written centuries ago, its themes remain remarkably relevant to modern society. Through the tragic story of Othello, Desdemona and Iago, Shakespeare examines how a person can be psychologically manipulated until suspicion becomes stronger than truth.THE CHARACTER OF OTHELLOOthello is a complex character. He is courageous, respected and powerful, but emotionally vulnerable. His greatest weakness is not his military ability but his inability to withstand manipulation once doubt enters his mind.Othello initially trusts Desdemona completely. However, Iago understands Othello’s insecurities and gradually convinces him that Desdemona may be unfaithful. Instead of seeking the truth directly, Othello allows suspicion to grow. This makes Othello a tragic hero. His downfall comes not because he lacks strength, but because his emotional weaknesses are exploited by another person.THE CHARACTER OF IAGOIago is one of Shakespeare’s most psychologically dangerous villains. He does not destroy people through physical strength. He destroys them through information, suggestion, deception and manipulation.Iago rarely tells Othello everything directly. Instead, he makes suggestions that encourage Othello to reach his own conclusions. This is what makes his manipulation so powerful.Iago understands that suspicion can be more destructive than an obvious lie. Once Othello begins to suspect Desdemona, almost everything he sees becomes evidence against her.Iago therefore represents the danger of manipulation, misinformation and psychological control.DESDEMONA AND THE TRAGEDY OF TRUSTDesdemona represents love, loyalty and innocence, but her innocence cannot protect her from a system of suspicion created by Iago. Her tragedy demonstrates that being truthful does not always protect a person from false accusations. Desdemona repeatedly tries to defend herself, but Othello has already allowed jealousy to overpower his judgment. Her relationship with Othello also raises questions about communication. If Othello had openly discussed his fears with Desdemona and listened to her explanation, the tragedy might have been avoided.JEALOUSY AS A DESTRUCTIVE FORCEOne of the most important themes in Othello is jealousy.Jealousy begins as an emotion but becomes destructive when it is combined with insecurity, suspicion and a lack of communication. Othello moves from loving Desdemona to doubting her, then to monitoring her, accusing her and eventually destroying the person he loves.Shakespeare demonstrates that jealousy does not require facts to survive. Sometimes suspicion itself becomes enough. This is highly relevant in modern society, particularly in relationships affected by rumours, social media, private messages, misunderstandings and unverified information.THE POWER OF MANIPULATIONIago's greatest weapon is not a sword. It is psychology. He studies the weaknesses of the people around him and uses those weaknesses against them. His manipulation demonstrates how dangerous misinformation can become when it is delivered by someone who understands exactly what another person fears.OTHELLO AS A TRAGIC HEROOthello fits the model of the tragic hero because he possesses admirable qualities but has a fatal weakness that contributes to his destruction. He is respected, courageous and capable of great love. However, his insecurity and susceptibility to manipulation gradually overcome his judgment. His tragedy becomes even more painful because he eventually recognizes the truth when it is too late.
