I'm a big fan of Plant43, so I chose him as the latest artist in my tribute series. I host an event every Sunday in San Francisco called UNPLUG, and I spun this live for the opening hour as people were trickling into the club. Since I only had an hour, I was only able to squeeze in a certain amount of tracks, but his extensive catalogue is a must to check out in its entirety. Plant43 Bio: First inspired by Kraftwerk in the mid 80′s, Emile Facey aka Plant43 was hooked on electro from an early age. In 1998 he got involved with promoting electro events in London and soon after started writing music as Plant43. His first vinyl release came in 2006 on the much-missed Ai Records. Several 12’s and the well-received “Burning Decay” album in 2010 alongside other releases on Semantica Records, AC Records (acidlab.de), Bleep43 Recordings and the stellar Future Massive label have highlighted his singular and ambiguous style of sinewy electro. I noticed that one of my favorite Electro producers Nullptr wasn’t getting nearly enough attention (which he very much deserves), so I decided to spin an hour of his music to pay tribute to him in the hopes of exposing his tracks to more people. Bio: Eddie Symons aka Nullptr aka Bovaflux is an electro producer and DJ, label boss of [d]-tached records and co-promoter of Cambridge-based electro night Motherchip Connexion. Eddie's entrance into the electro scene came with his debut release Optical as Nullptr on the highly regarded Detroit Underground label. Since then he has gone on to put out an ever expanding catalogue of forward thinking electro with labels like SolarOneMusic, Fundamental, Fanzine as well as a string of releases with CPU records. I wanted to show some love to the king of Cyberpunk, EXTRA TERRA, so I dedicated one of my live sets to him. I only had an hour, so I could only squeeze in 29 of his tracks, but he has so many more bangers that I couldn't fit in. I opened for the Hi I'm Ghost and HVDES co-headline show at DNA Lounge in San Francisco under my Nebakaneza alias (The voice you hear in the beginning is the DJ before me taking a picture with the crowd). For the last few years, I've been trying my hardest to expose this city to more Midtempo Bass sets, as no one else in this area seems to be doing so. Our city still books all the big headliners who are known for Midtempo, or at least have produced a few tracks, like HVDES, Rezz, Whipped Cream, Blanke, 1788-L, One True God, Zabo, Kloud, Street Fever, Social Kid, Tokyo Rose, Lazerpunk, LICK, Zomboy, Eptic, and so many more, but for some strange reason, when it comes to the supporting DJs, promoters suddenly act like it's some weird music that they've never heard of, and are skeptical about booking Midtempo openers. When I finally convince promoters to just trust me with my 20 years of experience, I end up making the crowds go absolutely nuts. This set was spun on two CDJs, with quantize/sync turned OFF. We were both born in the 80’s, so we didn't really start listening to music until the 90's, and she was shocked that I knew all this soft rock that came out before I was born. People often ask how I went from Dubstep to Synthwave. These are tracks that I feel connect the two genres, although this mix is neither Synthwave, nor Dubstep. L-Wiz is a duo consisting of Claes Rosén and Ola Näslund from Nynäshamn Sweden (Stockholm). They started producing dubstep in the early 2000's and in 2003, Caspa signed them as the first artists on his Dub Police label. The debut album on Dub Police was a huge success. They continued to release hit records on labels such as: Baredubs, Destructive Recordings, Sonic Boom, Red Volume, Dub Thiefs, Kapsize, Universal Music, and eventually their own label: All Out Dubstep. Some of their biggest infuences are other Dubstep producers like Anti Social ent, Kromestar, Joker, Clouds, Coki ,Benga, Skream as well as many house and funk artists. Welcome to part 2 in the Dubstep Dedication Series, exploring the music of JAFU. Jafu is the master of chilled out beats. The amount of detail he puts into each song may sound minimal, but it is layered in such a manner that even the slightest tick comes through with such force. The devil is in the details with this kid and it shows. His tribal yet soothing sound can put you in a trance and he softens the impact of the drop by toning down the one beat, on many tracks, and lets the melodies come in on the two. His music may not be fit for DJs to rock a dance floor, but his brilliance shines brighter than some of the most well known producers. Apparently he’s still a teenager, so he was dropping shit like this when he was only 15 or 16. It’s crazy to think that such a young kid can produce such deep and sultry tracks, while most kids his age need to flex their muscle (or lack thereof) with aggressive and agitating sounds. He hasn’t been putting out much lately, but I really hope the weight of this industry doesn’t crush his spirits. These 30 minute mini mixes will be artist spotlights, focusing on musicians that inspire me. Volume 1 features: Aeolho. Aeolho’s music captures a revolutionary sound in Dubstep music. Dubstep needed to evolve to stay relevant, and this neuro style was picking up a lot of steam. Had Aeolho and this particular sound caught on in the mainstream Dubstep world, I think it could have opened Dubstep up and created a revival in the genre. His sounds are dark and heavy like The Others, yet bouncy and funky like Swindle. It has a deep intellectual vibe, yet is still danceable.
