RIP Space Ghost: George Lowe Reads Coast to Coast Fanfic

It's with a heavy heart that we report that Space Ghost is no longer getting enough oxygen. On March 2nd, George Lowe, voice of Space Ghost, and all-around delightful weirdo, became a true ghost. He joins C. Martin Croker, voice of Zorak and Moltar in Valhalla. We never did any podcasts with either of them, but back in 2014 we recorded an episode of Nerdy Show Live with George Lowe where we read some Space Ghost Coast to Coast fanfic. George Lowe reads as Space Ghost, Cat as Zorak, Hex and Moltar, Doug as the announcer, and Jonna as Lou Ferrigno. "But wait", you might say to yourself, "I've never seen/ heard any such show!" Right you are. Nerdy Show Live was our short-lived experiment in doing panel show-style video programs in front of a live audience. This particular Nerdy Show Live was delightful in-person, but disastrous insofar as recording - as you'll hear. Long story short: we weren't in control of our audio engineering and what we ended up with is an unusable mess. However, in memory of George Lowe and C. Martin Croker, we've done what we can to salvage the best bit of that hot mess in a somewhat-listenable form.Listenable enough, perhaps, that hopefully you can have a laugh and think on the gloriously surreal late nights with Tad, Zorak, Moltar, Brak, and the rest of the gang. Pixelh8's Hard Reset

Nerdy Show doesn’t have a monopoly on going dormant for years at a time - why, twelve years ago, legendary chiptunes artist, Pixelh8, stepped away from music. He turned from pioneering musician to pioneering educator and founded The Creative Computing Club. But no sonic wizard stays entombed forever! Pixelh8 is back! His new record, Hard Reset, is out now, further new projects await, and we've dusted off Nerdy Show to give this old pal a warm welcome home.In this episode Cat and Jess travel with PixelH8 trough his new album, track by track, and learn crazy tales like how his first acting gig, on the set of a Tollywood movie, led to him programming a song on decommissioned missile hardware. We'll also discuss the how’s and whys of his departure from music and everything that happened in between, the various eras of chiptune music, his work reclaiming computer chips from dying consoles to build new instruments, spending six hours to make an anime sound on the NES, and much more.LINKS:Listen to the companion PixelH8 episode on "MOTHER," She WroteListen to Pixelh8's Hard ResetPixelh8 on TikTok | Instagram | PatreonPixelh8's BandcampHard Reset on CD (UK only)The Creative Computing Club Hosted on Acast. David Byrne Shares True Stories From "True Stories"

In this archival interview from 2018, Cat speaks with Talking Heads' David Byrne about the Criterion Collection re-release of his 1986 film, True Stories and the first ever edition of that film's complete soundtrack. The film was Byrne's directorial debut and as it plainly puts it right at the start is "about a bunch of people in Virgil, Texas."The film is part zany, slice of life comedy, part anthropological study - processed through the music of Talking Heads and projected through a loving, art house lens. Cat and Byrne discuss how this remarkable portrait of 80s America came together and other unexpected art.For links and more info, head to the main episode page:https://nerdyshow.com/2020/09/nerdy-show-david-byrne-shares-true-stories-from-true-stories Hosted on Acast. Come See Us at PodTales! Oct 20th, Cambridge, MA

We're going to PodTales a festival of audio drama and audio fiction. It's free, it's in Cambridge, MA, and it's on October 20th. More info here: https://podtales.org/ We've got a table (A5/6 in the Mt. Absalom room) and several panels including this one at 2PM: "Living in the Moment: Writing Through Improvisation" in The Hephaestus (Second Floor). Hosted by Cap and featuring Hem "Volonda" Cleveland (The Lucky Die, Dark Dice) Natasha Haverty & Brendan Pelsue (We Are Not These People), Sean Howard (Civilized, Alba Salix: Royal Physician, The End of Time and Other Bothers). The first storytellers didn't sit around plotting – they lived in the moment and collaborated with others to tell taller tales! Our panel shares the secrets of wielding spontaneity and collaboration as tools for creating unprecedented drama, laughs, and realism in your stories - as well as how to craft recording environments to enhance and manipulate your cast's performances, how to plot without a script, and how to elevate improvised material to audio excellence with scripted revisions and cinematic production. Get Off My Books

Presently the production house known as Nerdy Show is in the midst of some massive movements. After the release of The Call of Cthulhu Mystery Program series 2, Cap and Doug dove right into a new major project for Lightning Dogs (still TBA) - so, after a long day of recording stuff they can't talk about quite yet, and no time to assemble a proper episode of Nerdy Show, they grabbed a friend and piled into the studio for a free-wheeling conversation to catch you up on things and hopefully entertain and delight.Who is this mystery friend? Cap and Doug are joined by Eleanor Edwards, co-host of Consequence Podcast Network's The Fifth Dimension: A Twilight Zone Podcast, and Cap's partner of 16 years who's been behind-the-scenes this entire time, but hasn't truly graced us with her presence until now. Crazy! Well at the very least we'll always stay true to what you've come to expect from us for the past decade: surreal tangents and strange comedy. In this episode - Cap, La Valle, and Doug team up for a creative experiment in which Cap plays a high-powered Hollywood executive type taking pitches from hapless writers.Which of these absurd ideas will get green lit for production? Whose hopes and dreams will get eaten alive by the Hollywood monster? But all that's just a prelude to the main event! In preparation for an upcoming collaborative art project, Cap dusts off some fan fiction they wrote with Local-Shop in which their favorite pretentious art ladies of the 90s meet: Judy Funnie (from Nickelodeon/ Disney's Doug) and Maude Lebowski (from The Big Lebowski). Indulge in Cap's all too thorough knowledge of Doug continuity as we explore Judy's undocumented time at Vole University and Maude's continued interest in work that's strongly vaginal. ALL CAPS: The Aquabats! Super Show! N€€d$ Right€ou$ Comrad€$

PREVIOUSLY! ON NERDY SHOW... The gang had a good laugh about skeleton soup. But enough of that. Let's get serious... SERIOUSLY AWESOME.In lieu of a regularly scheduled episode, you're getting an over-indulgence of your host with the most, Cap. It's no surprise they've got a lot of things on their mind, but there's one thing of paramount importance. The fate of the world might hang in the balance: The Return of The Aquabats! Super Show! It's a super rad television show about America's hardest working superhero band - totes appropes for kids and lounge lizards alike. It's not like anything else on TV, and that's why Big TV slammed its gold-ringed hand and exiled Super Show to Nowheresville. But there's a chance, friends. A chance that if enough Righteous Comrades band together and sacrifice their piggybanks to the altar of Crowdfundius, the Greek god of hopes and dreams, that The Aquabats might have a super-successful Kickstarter that'll bring back the greatest show since sliced bread AND make some dope records too!So... long story short... Microsode: Mario Paint and Beyond - 90s Creative Games with Jazzy Boho

Once upon a time there was a short-lived era of gaming based specifically around empowering the user to create. The era of Mario Paint - a console game that came with a mouse, explained how to interface with your VCR, and had full illustration, music, and animation suites... all for the Super Nintendo. It's the best-known, but it wasn't alone. In this episode, Cat, Brandon, and Jon team up with Fangamer's Jazzy Boho to discuss the obscure genre of creative games. Interview: Christy Karacas' Ballmastrz: 9009

In the distant future there is only THE GAME. Do you have what it takes to pulverize all the other mutants, magical girls, cyborgs, and wasteoidz? Can you master the ballz?Enter: Ballmastrz: 9009, the new series from Superjail's Christy Karacas. Whereas Superjail's animation drank deep from the acid-laced waters of 60s and 70s Western animation, this new series pulls heavy from the anime well. But of course, that's not all. There's also Jodorowsky, giallo films, every dystopian sports project ever, and other peculiar pop culture ephemera in the mix. Microsode: Independent Sci-Fi / Fantasy Publishing with Alyson Grauer

Here at Nerdy Show, we know how to make our stories come to life by taking matters into our own hands with audio dramas and comic books... but what about books? That's right, prose - sentences, paragraphs, chapters - strung into bound volumes be they physical or digital; how do you break into that scene? To help us solve this quandary, Cap and Bad Storytellers / Ghostbusters: Resurrection's Josh LaForge are joined by Alyson Grauer of the RPG podcast Warda. She's got experiences to share about breaking into independent sci-fi / fantasy publishing, in both novels and short stories, along with advice on leveling up your writing game and her personal tale of social networking her way to print. For links and more info, head to the main episode page:https://nerdyshow.com/2018/03/nerdy-show-microsode-independent-sci-fi-fantasy-publishingLearn more about your ad choices. Episode 304 :: Peculiar Science

There IS such thing as a tesseract. A notion we take for granted here in the 21st century, but one that in 1962 made some waves - especially when it was the central focus of a children's book. Madeline L'Engle's sci-fi classic, A Wrinkle in Time, for all its hard sci-fi mixed with metaphysical fantasy, has been near-impossible to adapt in its 50+ years - but can the full weight of Disney's special effects budget and the powers of Oprah finally make some science magic happen? We've got opinions! And that's not all!Join Cap, Trench, boR, and Jon as we discuss sci-fi anime and TV you may have already watched, odd films you might not have, and some baffling new explorations in science: VR murder in the court room, vortexes on Jupiter, and Alexa laughing manically when she hears a ghost. For links and more info, head to the main episode page:Learn more about your ad choices. Microsode: Westerns

What makes a "Western"? Is it the arid landscape of 1800s America? Is it the hats? Or is it something more? ...Some kind of "true grit", if you will, that gets into the boots of a story and chafes at the characters' collective psyches? In this listener-requested Microsode we might not be able to provide answers to the Big Questions in this Big Country, but we'll certainly dole out as many musings as we can muster.Join Cap and 2/3rds of the Ghostbusters: Resurrection cast: Doug, Briggs, La Forge, and Poole for a rootin' tootin' travelogue through the world of Westerns. We've got advice on where to start if you want to dive into the genre, some off-kilter observations, and advice on what to watch in every era that spurs have hit the silver screen. For links and more info, head to the main episode page:https://nerdyshow.com/2018/03/nerdy-show-westerns/Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 303 :: As Mute As It Gets

Time to get serious folks. Sometimes a single piece of pop culture sweeps in and sidelines an entire discussion - brushing aside all the idle chatter of the latest video game whatnot, ill-advised parody erotica, and dreams of a virtual future where theme park rides never die. Yeah, that stuff is here too. But mostly in this episode we talk about Duncan Jones' sci-fi film, Mute.Join Cap, boR, Brandon, and NeoFaust as they discuss why this sidestep sequel to Moon is one of the most cyberpunk stories to make it to film. But all is not well in the neon-drenched streets of near-future Berlin: though luminaries like legendary author William Gibson love it, Mute is getting gutted in the reviews. We share spoiler-free highs and lows of the movie and take the toxic climate of online criticism to task. There might not be hacking, razorgirls, and explosions, but if you're looking for a seedy underbelly to skulk in while wearing mirrorshades, well... this might be the film you're looking for.For links and more info, head to the main episode page:https://nerdyshow.com/2018/02/nerdy-show-303-as-mute-as-it-gets/Learn more about your ad choices.
