Intersections
All the tracks in this Dj set have been produced by a small group of music makers. I refer to Jus Ed, Dj QU, Aybee, Levon Vincent and Fred P. Producers, who belong to the restricted elite of those who who were able to create a style which has become the Standard of this type of music. Each of them with his own unique peculiarity and sound identity and yet have something in common with the each other: deep and evocative sound, inclination to alternate soft and involving landscapes with disturbing and pulsating atmosphere. Music which goes simultaneously to the two extremes of the spectrum: white light and darkness. Probably it is not a coincidence that these artists have collaborated on various recordings. I like to think that the growth each of them had in terms of his art has been at least partially evoked by these magic moments of exchange and sharing. In maths, an intersection is the overlapping area of two distinct sets. A place which content is shared. This sharing generates a new reality, which is a daughter of the two sets and yet is different from these two. If we think that a dj set is the moment of time in which each preceding track intersects with the coming one, to share a piece of itself in order to become something else, everything gains even more clarity. Ps. One track comes from Omar S. The exception that proves the rule ;) Picture: “The model of intersection of nature and culture in the context of creative musical processes”. Taken from Conference Paper: “Musical Materials and Compositional Practices at the Intersection of Natural and Cultural Constraints”. 21 Jazz Funk Greats
Many times I have promised myself to make a DJ set dedicated to the music that accompanies me while relaxing, having dinner with my wife and friends or simply while having a drink at home, and now also during my leisure time with my daughter. Finally, I resisted to the temptation of a “classic” techno-house dj set and here I am. In the 70s, some Afroamerican jazz musicians, following the orthodox and pure music path up to that moment, decided to open themselves, a bit for pleasure and a bit for need, towards new sounds already embraced by their community: Soul and Funk. A new style got born, a style that was able to mix the intellectual pulse of Jazz with the street rhythm of Funk and the intimate spirituality of Soul. Rhythm always on the front side with keyboards, guitars and wind instruments signing adventurous paths. Complex and, at the same time, damn simple music! Instinct for intellectuals. The opposite sides attracting one another. As James Blood Ulmer says “Jazz is the Teacher, Funk is the Preacher”. This is It. Ps. The cover is a game. I used the one of the historical Throbbing Gristle’s album as the title was simply perfect for my purposes: had to add one more number as the pieces I have chosen are 21 and substitute the faces of the band members with some of the godfathers of the Jazz Funk: Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers e James Senese, great saxophonist and an absolute idol for us Italians.

Waiting for the Rainbow
During this period, when I stay closed among the four walls of my home, Time gave me the possibility to magnify my parameters and units of measurement. Everything has become longer, more available, more possible. This how my new dj set came to live. Almost three hours of an interrupted sound flow. It’s strange. Despite my intention was to create a 1.5h dj set imprinted on jazz, the further I was going into the selection of different tracks, the clearer the House imprinting was. Sounds like Latin Caribbean, Disco, Deep, Funk, Blues, Afro, Jazz, Soul sneaked in – all of them representing different facets of House Music. It is hard to build something that works out well, that is various, yet stays organic and coherent and lasts more than the classical 90 min dj set. The greatest Djs play also 10h sets, yet I am not a great Dj. The popular and famous Djs play 1h and then it’s time to go to bed. Enough, otherwise the trick will be discovered. Yet I am not even famous, even less - popular. Nonetheless, I know Music and I love it. It might be you won’t be able to “drink this cocktail” at one shot. Maybe you will need to sip it gradually. On the other hand, listening and re-listening it, I have realized that it works well both all at once and in pieces. That’s thanks to its various souls. I wanted to be that way. Almost exhausting at times. Exactly like this quarantine – sometimes exhausting, and yet inspirational and full of new opportunities. As the future itself. Waiting for the storm to end. Waiting for the new life. Waiting for the rainbow. PS. I swear the next dj set will be jazz

Songs about Faith, Love & Second Chances
It is not true that life gives you only a chance. Who says this, is a liar. First chance is never recognized and you realize that It was there, only when you have just missed it. It is useful only to prepare yourself to grab the Second one. Keep walking man… Picture: “The Dove”; collage technique by African-American artist Romare Bearden. He worked with many types of media including cartoons and oils. He was also a soldier, a songwriter and a philanthropist.

Other Music
Deep House is a term that has been so overused to become an empty box. A generic container which comprises any type of sound and atmosphere. Actually, Its real meaning is all here. Infinite voyage from Surface to Depth. Consciousness becomes glare and memory, echo. Other Music.

Medicine Man Blues
I am a medicine man, I do a medicine dance. i am a medicine man, I sing a medicine chant. i am a medicine man, I have a medicine tale. Oh baby baby, don't be so troubled. I got bricks to make you strong. Oh baby baby, don’t feel so bad. I got flowers to heal your wounds. Oh baby baby, don’t look so sad. I got blues to make the devils go. Text is inspired by Bobby McFerrin’s song “Medicine Man”. Photo is from Exhibition Ancestral Blues - The State of L3. Author: Felipe Peres Calheiros; Title: Representação Imagética de Iemanjá. It has nothing to do with the Medicine Man itself. It just caught me for the man’s presence so calm and elegant, and yet, bizarre and unconventional.

138 Square Miles
Detroit is not only the city where Techno was born. it is also the place where some of the most beautiful pages of the contemporary House Music have been written. Detroit’s House music has the most Soul sound ever. It is the most dirty and lo-fi that has ever been heard. It is Black in its pure essence. It is all but commercial. One day I will visit this awkward city and shall be walking among its Art Deco buildings and in its streets. I will cross its low houses neighbors, photographing the ruins of the american dream. For now, with great modesty and respect, i dedicate the dj set to Theo, Moody and the others from The D, immense masters and continuous source of inspiration. The dj set is named after the book of Julia Reyes Taubman. The picture, painted by artist Sydney G. James, comes from a mural that is the centerpiece of“The Detroit Grind” exhibition.

Something in the Sky
Mario lives at Pilastro and has a quiet life. Every day the alarm rings at 6.00, a strong and decisive ring, able to erase any memory of what he has dreamt about and drop him right into everyday reality. A kiss to his daughter, who still sleeps serenely in the bunk bed… a smile to his wife, the beloved Giovanna, who prepares the breakfast with care and devotion. Milk, coffee, biscuits or cake, whatever. A caress on the hand, before the shower and the usual “see you in the evening”. He jumps into the car singing softly the song of the day. Mario loves singing as it makes him feel good and allows him to face another work day with the right mood. Each day one song. Sometimes new, sometimes drawn out of his immense repertoire created over the years. Inserts the key and the deafening engine responds at once. A curve to the right, the standard straight way and then the sequence of small bends which as usual give him the opportunity to concentrate just as much as necessary in order to sweep away the last signs of the night sleep. Here he is on his way, running towards a new, and yet umpteenth, day of his life. The cars are already lined up at the petrol station at the entrance to orbital road. The “Hitchhiker's bar” is already full as ever….”what a funny name!” Mario thinks while reading the gaudy sign. Life passes by. Without big claims. Without big surprises. Everything is ok. Suddenly like a flash... Mario gets dazzled and instinctively pushes the brake and slows down. Looks up and stares at something in the sky…

Timespace
There will be an Age when humans will build pyramids and towers. When wizards and alchemists will transform the substance and forge the iron. There was a Past when Aba Adem Akinlana, son of Aftab Aganju, grandson of Danesh Enam Fareh, took off from Mpemba Kasi Space Center and got his footprint on Planet G’s Trappist-1 Solar System. There will be a Time when you will be born. We are all moving bodies across the absolute elsewhere. All possible alternate histories and futures are real. Timespace.

Still Life
Still life is a genre of photography used for the "depiction" of inanimate subject matter, typically a small group of objects which may be either natural or man-made. Steady, fixed, immovable. Eternal, essential, archetypical. This is not old school. This is not new school. This is not a genre. This is not a current. This is not a style. This is drum and bass. This is beat and silence. Wind instrument and percussion. A sign on canvas. Nothing more. Nothing less.

STROBOSCOPIC aka MainstreamDestroysMusicalAlternatives
Optical Phenomenon that occurs when a rapidly moving body is periodically illuminated by a lamp with a frequency lower than the speed of the object. In this case, the movement is perceived lower then the real one or, even, inverted. This dj set is part of the NASA project “Behavioral Adaptation Under Absence of Gravity and Deprived Conditions”. It has been developed to support the astronauts to manage potential experiences of stress and sensory deprivation during the space missions. Heartfelt thanks to Phd’s Professors Omar Hoffman, Morpheus Mills, Colin McBean and “ours” Italo Merck Johnson for their fundamental suggestions and incessant incitements. Nothing would have happened without them.

Devotion
We live in a unique and relentless Present Unaware of the Years and Remembrance. Ignorant creators of our Future. We walk in the space, unconscious about lives that have crossed it, imprinting indelible lines on rough boards made of stone. Blurry figures and feeble echoes of who used to be Human once. Let Peace be with you, Ancestors of ours, perfect guides towards Modernity. This DJ set has been inspired by: - John Talabot and his Hivern Discs, which has almost completely captured my listening time during this summer. The first 30 minutes are a pure and simple homage to his 2013 Dj Kicks; - the square in Marzamemi, which I would love to see entirely empty and silent again, at least once. - all the places in the world, whose beauty reveals us, almost like in a live- recording, the pure circularity of Time.

Tony Vella Substantia Nigra
A CLASSIC ! Tony's Substantia Nigra comes back for good! Often we hear people debating about “culture”. Sometimes, appropriately. Many times, without consciousness. Concerning house music, I think that culture means “tripping accross styles, having clearly in mind which are the roots , which directions are taking the branches, trying to follow the path of the sap that feeds the whole tree”. A sort of “high level energy”. What the doctors call, “Substantia Nigra”.

Ritual
Trance is our perception of reality, but at a very deep level. A significant part of the spiritual path is recognizing and understanding trance states and learning how to direct them toward the more divine octaves of perception. As we trance-form, we transform, we perceive our reality in new ways. And we see ourselves in new ways as a result. There are times when we feel transformed from matter into pure energy; when we can step outside of time and observe it moving so slowly, and step back in; when we can do the physically impossible; when we can anticipate “accents” we have never heard and hit them perfectly; when we experience a sense of timelessness, a sense of connection to the “otherworldly”, when we experience abilities and behaviors beyond the social or physical norms, reduced sensitivity to pain, exhilaration or ecstasy, feelings of transformation within the self. A sense of the ineffable, of catharsis, of increased creativity; and, if a group experience, a sense of “community”. What we experience is a particular state of Trance: It is the Dance.

The Blues - A Tribute
A Mony mia ispirazione, amore, paziente e saggia compagna. This is my personal point of arrival and, as such, a point of departure for the next itineraries. A tribute to an artist and a precise musical mood. It arises with a question, which continuously repeated throughout the play, finds an answer only at the end of the road ....... Although, in reality, the whole opera is simply a confirmation of what is already clear. We are what we have gone through. To my patient and wise Mony.... my inspiration and love.

Tony Vella A Summer Night Until Sunrise
August 2015. Sicily. I came back home at 4:30 am after a night spent together with my closest friends. My wife was tired. i told her “Good night baby, I will come in a minute”. ..... I was half drunk and inspired. My house is really close to the sea. Less than 30 metres. I opened the window and started recording a new dj set. This one. The last song ended while the sun was rising for the new day. A new day of a fantastic summer. “Get up, Honey! It’ s time to go to the Sea..” :-) Agosto 2015. Sicilia.
