Longevity, Inheritance Issues, Record Keeping Software 8-18-26

On our August 18, 2026 News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging Club podcast episode, Elizabeth Magallon Fleury presented an article regarding "heirs' property," where real estate passed down without clear titles can lead to legal complications and forced sales. Related to this, partition sales allow speculators to buy fractional ownership and trigger court-ordered sales at low prices. The Uniform Partition of Heirs Property Act legislation in many states aims to protect these rights. Ray Gordon noted that large landholdings often face issues when multiple descendants cannot agree on how to dispose of the property.Benjamin Surmi discovered an interesting segment of a report generated by who.filed. The report revealed that of $101.5 million in aging-related funding, $87.5 million went toward software for record-keeping rather than direct care. As an example from the report, Roger Labs (which markets its home-health AI platform as Roger) uses ambient listening during patient visits to help clinicians complete OASIS assessments and other documentation.Ray Gordon provided us with details on cellular rejuvenation and epigenetic reprogramming research, touching on Altos Labs, Yamanaka Factors, David Sinclair and Life Biosciences.Presented by Elizabeth Magallon Fleury, CAPS, Life's Encore Planning NY Times 8-1-26 Heir’s Property and Other Real Estate Inheritance Issues by Martha C. Advertising to 60 Plus, Senior Living Marketing, Geriatric ER 8-11-26

Linda Sherman began our August 11, 2026 News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging Club podcast episode with a discussion of the Global Wellness Institute's report on advertising to older adults, highlighting the industry's failure to effectively target the 60+ demographic. In our discussion we mentioned that perhaps there is ageism in the advertising agencies, even at the top. One key finding of the report is the suggestion for brands to focus on experiences rather than aging issues.Interesting thought from Ellen Khalifa suggesting that a surge of input from those of us over 55 putting content into the reach of AI LLMs might create a shift that changes our importance for attention.Benjamin Surmi presented “ghost” trends in senior housing marketing. Always great to get Benjamin’s senior living perspective because his experience is so deep. Debbie Howard brought us geriatric emergency departments, which reduce hospital admissions and costs by 39% and 38%, respectively, and save Medicare up to $3,000 per visit. The team stressed the importance of better training and representation for older adults in healthcare settings. Benjamin Surmi shared with us his warning to families as they begin their journey of having a loved one in memory care or even senior living that they must accompany or provide an advocate caregiver to accompany their loved one if they need to go to the ER. They should never be in an ER alone.Presented by Linda Sherman, former CEO/CMO, multinational subsidiaries in Japan; Managing Editor, Boomer Tech TalkGlobal Wellness Institute July 2026 Report on Advertising Perspectives on Aging Well campaigns led by Dave McCaughanhttps://www.internationalistmagazine.com/the-audience-marketing-forgot-to-put-in-the-brief/The ReportDave McCaughan followed up with: "This report was one of a series and was indeed focused on creative directors from ad agencies. As a number told me when I pushed them .. if clients do not give them briefs to target over 60s they don't get paid so one big issue is getting actual clients to both understand targeting over 60s is of real value and also to provide better briefs to their agencies including better information about people over 60."Presented by Benjamin Surmi, Social Gerontologist and Senior Living Expert, VP Arvo.care, Advisor to Koelsch Communities   Senior Housing News Marketing Trends 8-10-26 by Austin Montgomeryhttps://seniorhousingnews.com/2026/08/10/how-senior-living-ghost-trends-are-shaping-the-future/Presented by Debbie Howard, Caregiver Advocate, Co-founder, Living BestNY Times 7-25-26 Geriatric Emergency Departmentshttps://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/25/well/geriatric-emergency-departments.html“Since 2017, the American College of Emergency Physicians has accredited 624 such geriatric emergency departments across the United States, including 73 in Veterans Affairs medical centers. “A fairly exponential rate of growth,” said Dr. Kevin Biese, the emergency doctor who directs the Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative.”ACEP’s Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) programFind every GEDA Accredited Emergency DepartmentDiscussion hosted with commentary by: Managing Editor Boomer Tech Talk, Rethinking Aging Club podcasts founder, executive producer and co-host Linda Sherman with co-hosts Ray Gordon, architect, urban planner and futurist, Tech Reporter on Boomer Tech Talk; and Debbie Howard, caregiver advocate and co-founder, Tokyo-based AgeTech platform Living Best.BoomerTechTalk.com episode page 8-11-26 LinkedIn Show PostWe record News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging Club podcasts live on Tuesdays. GLP-1s and Aging, Dementia Training, Bidets 8-4-26

For our 8-4-26 News for the Ages episode, we discussed the use of GLP-1 drugs for weight loss in older adults, noting that over 12% of Americans are on these drugs, with potential side effects like muscle loss and dehydration. The Trump administration's new Medicare program sets the cost of three weight loss drugs at $50 a month, affecting 38.9% of older adults. Older adults are underrepresented in clinical trials for GLP-1 drugs, which affects the evidence available for their use. Ellen suggests that lifestyle interventions should be the first line of obesity management for older adults and personalized approaches are important. We covered a study on the financial benefits of dementia-competent hospitals. Benjamin Surmi explained that many training programs are constrained by hospital systems and lack follow-up and mentoring. He suggested that organizational changes are necessary for training programs to be effective and emphasized the importance of embedding training into the workday and providing ongoing support for staff.Lastly, the benefits of bidets for hygiene and health were discussed, emphasizing their role in reducing UTIs and environmental impact.Presented by Ellen Khalifa, Habits Coach for Healthspan and Wellspan Scientific American: America is embarking on a risky experiment with GLP-1s and aging 7-19-26  by Liz Seegert (edited by Claire Cameron) https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/america-is-embarking-on-a-risky-experiment-with-glp-1s-and-aging/ Apple News Plus access: https://apple.news/AaOlllpklR-uq1Nmnu9RK2wLiz Seegert was a guest on our August 6, 2026 Rethinking Aging Club podcast honoring National Wellness Month"Hypotension" is low blood pressure.Presented by Benjamin Surmi, Social Gerontologist and Senior Living Expert, VP Arvo.care, Advisor to Koelsch Communities   Global Journal of Medical Research (GJMR Volume 26 issue K2) 2026M. Family Caregiving, Women's Strength Training, Dementia Resident Clashes 7-28-26

In our July 28, 2026 News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging Club podcast episode Elizabeth Magallon Fleury shared insights from a New York Times article on the emotional and financial toll of family caregiving, highlighting the need for better planning and communication. “Millions of Americans are stepping into one of the hardest roles they'll ever take on, caring for their aging parents. Times Opinion interviewed dozens of family caregivers across the country to paint a portrait of the American elder care crisis.”Ellen Khalifa presented a Medical News Today article on the benefits of strength training for women, noting that adding two hours of strength training weekly can reduce heart attack risk by 44%. This article doesn't specifically mention aging, but we do know that the risk of cardiovascular disease rises sharply for postmenopausal women.Benjamin Surmi discussed the issue of violence among dementia residents in care facilities, emphasizing the need for systemic changes and better-designed living environments. Assisted Living Residents Evicted When New Owner Drops Medicaid, Medicare to Cover New Osteoporosis Test, Baby Boomer Divorces 7-21-26

In our July 21, 2026 News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging Club podcast episode, Benjamin Surmi talked about the challenges faced by assisted living residents when facilities drop Medicaid when an acquisition happens. The gap between Medicaid coverage and costs borne by the facility is a factor, forcing skilled nursing facilities (Nursing Homes) to be the choice when a move must be made.  Ellen Khalifa presented the new Medicare-covered BCT test for bone health, which evaluates bone quality and fracture risk.Elizabeth Magallon Fleury addressed the financial and inheritance complications arising from baby boomer divorces, noting that women are disproportionately affected. Presented by Benjamin Surmi, Social Gerontologist and Senior Living Expert, VP Arvo.care, Advisor to Koelsch Communities University Star San Marcos 7-9-26 Assisted Living Residents Evicted after Facility Drops Medicaid by Peyton Tillhttps://universitystar.com/35875/news/assisted-living-residents-evicted-after-facility-drops-medicaid/Linkedin discussionThe University Star, also known as The Star, is the student-run news organization at Texas State University and one of the oldest publications in the state. Geriatric Oral Health, Caregiving Ethics, Aging in Place Renovations 7-14-26

For our July 14, 2026, News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging Club, we were particularly interested in Ellen Khalifa’s white paper article on barriers to geriatric oral health such as cognitive impairments, financial constraints, and lack of transportation. Oral health is something we don’t cover often, but it is very important. Ellen wanted Dr. Zalan Alam, a speaker we have on occasion, to join us for this and “Dr. Zalam” kindly joined us at his 11pm in the UK. Dr. Zalan Alam emphasized the link between oral hygiene and cardiovascular health. Benjamin Surmi shared an article on ethical dilemmas in dementia care as adult children struggle with getting parents to take better care of themselves, advocating for professional guidance. Elizabeth Magallon Fleury discussed the benefits and challenges of aging in place, including home modifications and financial considerations. Note we have provided links to resources Elizabeth mentioned, including GoGoGrandparent and Lyft Silver. The discussion also touched on the importance of holistic healthcare and the role of third-party professionals in elder care.Linda Sherman, Debbie Howard and Ray Gordon offered commentary.Presented by Ellen Khalifa, Habits Coach for Healthspan and Wellspan  Cureus White Paper Barriers to Geriatric Oral Healthhttps://www.cureus.com/articles/393664-barriers-to-geriatric-oral-health-a-multifaceted-public-health-issue#!/Murali A, Muddappa S C, Rajan R R, et al. Caregiving a Parent Who Abused You, Longevity and Immunity 6-30-26

The News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging club episode recorded June 30, 2026 tackled a heavy topic first. Debbie Howard presented an article by Katie Engelhart, which highlighted the challenges faced by caregivers who were abused by the parents they cared for, particularly those with dementia. The article revealed that at least 20% of U.S. caregivers have been physically, mentally, or sexually abused by their parents. Debbie emphasized the complexities of dementia, including the difficulty of distinguishing between past abuse and new behaviors. Our discussion also touched on the financial and emotional burdens of caregiving, the importance of planning, and the potential benefits of mental health services and trusts for caregivers. Ellen Khalifa presented an article on longevity and immunity, focusing on the Buck Institute's research on extending health spans and the importance of a healthy immune system and nutrition. Because Debbie's article had a lot to do with caring for people with dementia we also talked about documents that need to be prepared:A good estate/elder-law plan for dementia often includes four layers:- Durable Financial Power of Attorney*Gives someone authority to pay bills, access accounts, hire caregivers, pay for home modifications, pay care managers, and arrange long-term care.- Advance Health Care Directive / Health Care Power of AttorneyNames the person who can make medical decisions when you cannot. The National Institute on Aging describes this as naming a health care proxy to make decisions if you cannot communicate.- Living Will / Dementia-specific care instructionsThis expresses what kind of care you want or do not want, especially around quality of life, feeding, hospitalization, comfort care, and end-of-life wishes. Alzheimer’s Association describes advance directives as documents that record treatment and care preferences, including end-of-life wishes.- Revocable Living Trust, if appropriateThis can let a successor trustee manage assets for your benefit if you become incapacitated. It is especially useful when there are homes, investments, or complex assets.Alzheimer's Association planning adviceBarak Gaster's dementia directive from 2018Powers of Attorney AARP 2021*Durable Financial Power of AttorneyThis lets you name a trusted person - often an adult child - to manage your money and pay for your care if you become mentally incapacitated. “Durable” means it continues to work after incapacity, including severe cognitive decline or dementia. AARP specifically notes that durable POA can help families avoid court intervention when someone has severe cognitive decline such as late-stage dementia. The document should be drafted to say clearly that your agent may use your funds for your care, comfort, housing, safety, transportation, in-home help, care management, assisted living, memory care, and other support. It can also say whether family members may be paid for caregiving - but that part should be done carefully.Kaishauna Guidry, MD, hospice expert and author in our audience commented: ‘There’s often issues obtaining 2 capacity letters to invoke the POA. I deal with this all of the time. A family recently had a bad day in court because an NP filled out the paperwork. Lay people need to understand that these legalities require a physician. The healthcare systemThe healthcare system has trained the public to use the term "provider," which is confusing to patients and familiesThere are also dueling siblings that can complicate these matters. Fighting Dementia Stereotypes, GLP1 Biological Aging Study, Aging in Place, 6-23-26

This News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging Club episode was recorded in June, which is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. We were glad to be able to include this important article from the Guardian about people living with dementia in early stages rallying to get better media representations and treatment. They have formed or become active in organizations like the Young Dementia Network, Dementia Alliance International, Deep (the Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project). All of them are “experts by experience," and many are actively involved in research projects such as Living Well With Dementia. Benjamin Surmi, who has extensive experience in the memory care world reported for our discussion.Ellen Khalifa, a peer educator for GLP-1s, presented two studies showing that semaglutide slowed biological aging in HIV patients by 9%. The original study was done in the UK and published in The Lancet, then UC San Diego ran the data through epigenetic clocks.Elizabeth Magallon Fleury's report focused on one of the challenges of aging in place, the fact that older homeowners often stay put due to financial and housing availability constraints. Ray Gordon, who is an architect and urban planner, commented on the need for innovative housing solutions, including modular and panelized construction, to address the housing shortage. They also discussed the potential of 3D printing for affordable housing.Presented by Benjamin Surmi, Social Gerontologist and Senior Living Expert, VP Arvo.care, Advisor to Koelsch Communities The Guardian 6-9-26 People Living with Dementia Are Fighting Against Damaging Stereotypes and Demanding Proper Medical Support  by Anne Karpfhttps://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/jun/09/dementia-rebels-diagnosed-determined-change-peoples-mindsLinda Sherman referred to the 2014 film Still Alice where Julianne Moore plays Alice Howland, a linguistics professor diagnosed with Alzheimer's. AARP July 2025 Family Caregiver Report, Respecting Physical Labor Staff in Senior Living 7-29-25

We discussed AARP's new report released in July on caregiving in the U.S. for 2025. The report highlights the need for policy changes, including federal tax credits, paid family leave, and better training for caregivers. The discussion also touched on the importance of treating caregiving as a respected profession and the potential role of immigration in addressing caregiving shortages.Linda Sherman pointed out that the AARP report data did not show youth caregivers, an issue illuminated in Bradley Cooper’s recent PBS Caregiving documentary. The July 2025 AARP family caregiving report eliminates anyone under 18 from its tables and puts 18 to 49 into one segment. The latest statistics we can find on caregiving youth are from this December 2023 Report on Caregiving Youth from The Caregiving Youth Research Collaborative. Presented by Debbie Howard, Aging Matters InternationalAARP 7-24-25 Caregiving in the US 2025 by AARP & National Alliance for Caregivinghttps://www.aarp.org/pri/topics/ltss/family-caregiving/caregiving-in-the-us-2025/The report: https://www.aarp.org/content/dam/aarp/ppi/topics/ltss/family-caregiving/caregiving-in-us-2025.doi.10.26419-2fppi.00373.001.pdf AARP 7-24-25 AARP-NAC Report Finds 45% Increase in Americans Providing Care by Paul Wynn Study reveals 63 million Americans are now family caregivers, facing rising stress, health risks and financial strainhttps://www.aarp.org/caregiving/basics/caregiving-in-us-survey-2025/7-24-25 The 19th News Number of family caregivers is surging by Barbara RodriguezNew report shows they’re managing financial risks, poor health and isolation.https://19thnews.org/2025/07/family-caregivers-surging-aarpWe referenced we heard about the report from Sherri Snelling’s 7-25-25 LinkedIn posthttps://www.linkedin.com/posts/sherrisnelling_cgus2025-longevityventure-activity-7354570701191700482-nMAyRelated discussion kicked off by Benjamin Surmi on Treating Physical Labor Workers in Care Settings with Respect.Benjamin mentioned the Teton AI tool as being helpful in senior living settings.
