Noel's Sketchpad

by Noel Lairson

I record things nearly every day: guitar solos, pop songs, experimental electronic music, oddly out-of-tune soundscapes; little composition snippets of every variety, really. And some of it's actually interesting to hear, even though it clearly will never be "released" "commericially", whatever THAT means in this day and age. Most artists carry around some kind of sketchpad full of works in progress; they may not be done, but they're still cool to look at. This is my sketchpad - enjoy.

Back in the Saddle with an archival track and a maddening tuning!

  5. Episode 10 - The Slave Driver; DJ Power & Associates

Synthesizers and E-Bows and fretless guitars, oh my! Also: a short attention-span hop around my music collection!

  6. Episode 9 - Tryptic & Branes

In which Noel goes acoustic, does a false start, and talks about the silly tuning he uses.

Kind of a dream. Everything keeps changing around the edges, and the ego comes and goes. There's some disturbing sights, but you don't really want to wake up.

  12. Episode 3 - Skrewdriver

NOW we separate the men from the boys. Real-time improvisation with guitar and Ableton Live as a looping device. If you lost your guitar noise, you might want to check here - it could have gotten mixed with mine.

  13. Roofie Colada

A wee bit of a dance number. Very wee.

  14. Achilles & Tortoise

I rip off Henry Kaisar's ripoff of Derek Bailey by talking about the show while playing random acoustic gibberish, then turn it over to a long dual-improvisation titled 'Achilles & Tortoise'
