Bobby running solo this week while Miss Ray is in Florida, and JD is away on family business. For the past 12 years Bobby learned how to live on the inside of prison, and learning to live on the outside has been more challenging and stressful than he ever imagined. From Florida to a Michigan prison: the hardships of maintaining a relationship with someone in prison. Due to physical separation, high costs, limited emotional intimacy, logistical barriers, societal stigma, and stress, maintaining prison relationships are always challenging. Bobby shares the importance of having a strong relationship beyond prison walls. Relationships with strong ties reduce recidivism, aid rehabilitation, provide crucial support, and promote successful reintegration for the incarcerated person. Beyond The Bars is a series of stories, as told by a former inmate, highlighting one of failures of mass incarceration - prison gangs.  Stories he wasn't able to share - until now - an eye opening, riveting peek behind the razor wire.  Part 1 is now available.Overcrowding, inadequate management of prisons, and lack of resources (nationwide) creates an environment where the "convict code" (informal rules for survival) is insufficient for safety. Where lack of effective rehabilitation, social isolation, and influence can take hold of people entering the prison system causing them to focus on in-prison survival rather than self-improvement. When people are thrown away to fend for themselves, without institutional support, they're forced to find ways to survive, and unfortunately gangs are there to fill that void. The fight for justice, even with the best intentions, can overlook the people it's trying to save. Bobby shares an article about an artist, who was asked by a department of corrections, to provide artwork for its facilities. In a well meaning attempt to highlight the failures of mass incarceration, the artist refused the offer. A close call at the prison phone kiosk is a reminder of the lack of phone-line integrity with the newer inmates. Bobby shares how prison affects his OCD and what he's learned about it during his 12 years behind bars, and what topic to talk about on his last episode in prison. He also mentions Leo Stanley, America's Dr. Frankenstein, who experimented with testicular transplants on inmates from 1913 - 1951. He took testicles from dead civilians and transplanted them in inmates believing it would stop criminal behavior. He also injected ground-up testicles into the abdomens of inmates as a less invasive procedure. Bobby and Co-host JD are back this week and dive into how easy it is to imagine you'd never end up in prison. "There but for the grace of God go I." Have you ever had that extra beer, or glass of wine, and got behind the wheel? There's a difference between intended violent criminal actions, and accidents, but the media and general population don't always make that distinction.Also, imagine a daily existence where regulations are presented as absolute, but make no sense at all because the very structure of prison life makes them nearly impossible to live by. It creates an atmosphere where in order to survive in prison you have to decide which rules warrant breaking. It teaches inmates that not all rules are necessary to follow. That's bad for everyone when that carries over to the outside world. Society needs prisons, but the way they're created actually makes things worse. You wouldn't cut your arm off to treat arthritis. Bobby, just weeks away from his parole hearing, shares the anxieties and hopes swirling within him, and the culmination of 12 years spent preparing for this chance is finally here.
