OM Backroads: Ep. 111. The origins of the Cleveland Mafia.

Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. Before the bombings, power struggles, and notorious crime bosses that would make Cleveland infamous, there was a small but determined network of Italian immigrants building a criminal empire in the shadows. In this episode, we explore the origins of the Cleveland Mafia, tracing its roots from the late 19th and early 20th centuries as immigrant communities established themselves in Northeast Ohio. Discover how early organized crime figures Joe Leonard and Joe Morello leveraged gambling, bootlegging, extortion, and political connections to create the foundation of what would become one of America's most influential Mafia families. We'll uncover the key personalities, pivotal events, and social conditions that allowed the Cleveland crime syndicate to emerge and grow. From the challenges faced by immigrant neighborhoods to the rise of Prohibition-era opportunities, this episode reveals how the Cleveland underworld evolved from a loose collection of street gangs into a structured criminal organization that would shape the city's history for decades. Join us as we examine the origins of the Cleveland Mafia and the beginnings of a story that would leave a lasting mark on both organized crime and Cleveland itself. Tune in and found out! OM Backroads: Ep. 110. Weird UFO stories with Ohio ties

Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. Did you ever look up in the sky and see something weird, something you can't explain? In this episode we have 3 stories about unexplained things in the night sky. Our first story explores the efforts of a group of St. Joe High School students from Cleveland, Ohio who figured out a way to listen to and track the Soviet satellite, Sputnik, even before our own military. They then created a device from a slide rule and a globe to assist in their efforts. Their efforts landed the boys on TV stations, newspapers, magazines then a visit by the FBI who promptly confiscated all their recorded tapes. Tune in and find out what happened next! Our next story we look at astronomer Jerry Ehman in 1977 using the Ohio State University Big Ear radio telescope. His volunteer job was to simply examine marks on an endless scroll of paper searching for anomalies, outlying marks indicating signals from out space. These signals may show something or someone trying to make contact us here on earth. On this particular day, in review of the data, the signal was so strong he made a notation "WOW" indicating the unusual signal that he had never seen before. This weird and strong signal was so strange, it caused arguments and discussion that continue to this day. Find out what happened and what people think the signal may or may not be. Our final story is about a mystery. A mystery that may or not exist at all. Its yjr infamous Hangar 18 at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Some people think that the aliens that were rumored to have been recovered from a UFO crash at the infamous Roswell, NM crash. Were these alien bodies taken there? Who's allowed there? What really goes on there? Tune in and found out!
