Old and in the Way Podcast In the mid-1970s, three legendary Bay Area artists — Alton Kelley, Pat Ryan, and Dave Sheridan — ignited a creative spark that became The Artista Gang. What began as a loose circle of friends and collaborators around the Marin and Sausalito art scenes evolved into one of the most colorfully mythic art collectives of its time — part poster movement, part social happening, part family. At the center of it all was Alton Kelley, the visionary designer best known for his psychedelic rock posters for the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Jefferson Airplane. Within the Artista circle, Kelley was affectionately called “El Presidente.” His humor, aesthetic discipline, and love of hot-rod and car-club culture inspired the idea of the “gang” — artists with satin jackets, a dragon logo, and a shared irreverence for creative boundaries.

My interview with the Fim's creator and Director. Shaped is a film about surfboard shapers a critical aspect of surfing is the board's design. Not an easy task as every board and every surfer is different. Most professional surfers ride custom made boards. I MCed the Tiburon International Film Festival for 10 years and interviewed various filmmakers and celebrities from 2001 to 2012.

After graduating from high school in 1970, Lorin moved to Marin and has lived in Mill Valley for the past 38 years. At that time Lorin and his brother Chris formed ‘The Rowan Brothers’. Within a year they were signed by Clive Davis on Columbia Records and recorded their first album. Lorin and Chris then teamed up with brother Peter as “The Rowans” and were signed by David Geffen to record three albums on Warner/Asylum; ‘The Rowans’, ‘Sibling Rivalry’ and ‘Jubilation’ respectively. The country-rock arrangements featured their sterling three-part harmonies. In the 80’s, Lorin and his partner Jimmy Dillon formed a local San Francisco rock-reggae group called “The Edge”. They recorded several independent releases and packed the local club scene. They often shared the bill with Huey Lewis and The News. During his career as a musician and composer, Andrew had three platinum albums and two hit singles. His songs have been used in numerous major motion picture soundtracks and documentaries. Kurt "Crowbar" Kangas has taken over the reins of the Bay Area's Artista Gang. The Artista Gang was created by renowned artists Alton Kelley, Pat Ryan, and David Sheridan back in the late 70s. The thinking back then was to create a gang of artists and their friends. Throw unbelievable parties. And, what a great way to meet women... what? Way before the whole "Me Too" thing kicked in, at the height of what historians referred to as the sexual revolution/liberation era, the Artista threw some incredible parties. Yep, we're to blame (not really). But, interesting times...and the Artista Gang lives on. Just some of the names of some of the Artista's members included Journey, the Grateful Dead, Norton Buffalo, Jerry Garcia (Kelley was an Artist for the Dead), Huey Lewis, Steve Miller Band, and just too many other celebs to include here.

Saunders was born in 1955 in San Francisco to a musical family.[1] His keyboardist father, Merl Saunders, got him started at an early age. He began singing at the age of five and played piano from age eight. Herbie Hancock and Sly Stone were among Saunders’ early teachers. Stone gave Saunders an organ at the age of ten. At age fourteen he began playing the bass. While growing up he was exposed to musicians including Eddie Moore, Jimmy Smith, Stanley Turrentine, Sonny Rollins, Dewey Redmen, George Duke, Al Jarreau, Bole Sete, and John Handy. Saunders received one of his first piano lessons from Herbie Hancock. He was awarded a fellowship at the prestigious San Francisco Conservatory of Music for piano.[2] His first Fender bass guitar was a gift from Tom Fogerty, brother of John Fogerty and rhythm guitarist for Creedence Clearwater Revival. He graduated from the Conservatory of Music in San Francisco. He received an Emmy at 14 years old with his father for the children's special Soul Is, a PBS documentary featuring Black poetry accompanied by Saunders on the bass. In the mid-eighties, I did standup as a comedy duo that introduced me to the world of stand-up comedy in San Francisco. Before embarking on going it alone I took some acting classes at College of Marin while bartending at the Punch Line in San Francisco.  This is one of my earlier performances and it's a little rough, ok it's really rough,  but I had a good time going up in front of multiple cameras and an audience.
