A lot of people forget what a cultural phenomenon Top Gun was when it came out in 1986, in fact it was so popular that it created a whole industry of cheap crappy knock offs including a 1990 film that had the bright idea to make the movie about helicopters rather than fighter jets. Nevertheless, like all of the other rip offs, it was a box office dud and was forgotten almost immediately. So, join us as we strap on our tactical helmets and fight for ocular dominance as we watch Top Gun’s schlocky, idiot cousin: Fire Birds A cocky pilot faces personal tragedy in combat so he is sent to an elite flying school where he must put aside his ego and overcome his own insecurities for the betterment of his unit and become one of the best of the best in the US military while falling madly in love with a gorgeous fellow pilot. Wait, sorry that was Top Gun… actually… that’s the exact same plot of this movie. Never mind Fire Birds stars Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy award winning screen legend Tommy Lee Jones, Nic’s Guarding Tess nemesis and real life Marine Captain Dale Dye, the gorgeous love interest from Blade Runner and David Lynch’s Dune….and also Ray Finkle AKA Lieutenant Einhorn in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Sean Young and of course, the greatest, that’s right I said he is the greatest, HE IS THE GREATEST helicopter pilot to ever take on the South American Cartel, Academy Award winning actor Nicolas Kim Coppola better known as Nicolas Cage.

As we’ve seen in the past Nicolas Cage has an uncanny ability to literally disappear into a role like few actors are capable but usually if you stop a film like Pig, Adaptation or Dream Scenario you can still easily recognize him. But what happens when you cover all traces of Nicolas Cage with heavy prosthetics, ratchet the insanity up to 11 and turn him into the creepiest villain we’ve ever seen him play? We’ll find out as we take on the 2024 Ari Aster produced A24 horror film Longlegs A semi-psychic detective is tasked with solving a series of unexplainable murders committed by someone leaving cryptic letters at the scene while seemingly having no connection to the victims. What follows is a creepy lurid decent into the world of the occult, satanic ritual and, of course, murder. Longlegs stars former professional kiteboarder and It Follows star Maika Monroe, multi-hyphenate star of film, television and theater and Agents of Shield regular Blair Underwood, Orange is the New Black/Justified regular who made her acting debut as that creepy ass kid in David Lynch’s version of Dune Alicia Witt, and of course, a man we’d all unwittingly do the dark bidding of any day of the week, Academy Award winning actor who awakens the Mr. Downstairs in all of us Nicolas Kim Coppola better known as Nicolas Cage.

If you love Nicolas Cage like we do, then this is a great time to be a fan. We’re living in the middle of the third Nicolas Cage renaissance or the Ren-Nic-Sance as we call it. There was the indie darling Ren-Nic-Sance the culminated with Leaving Las Vegas, the action Ren-Nic-Sance that was kicked off by the holy trilogy of The Rock, Con Air and Face/Off and now we’re in what I’d like to call the “I’m Nic Cage and I do whatever I want because I’m Nic Cage” Ren-Nic-Sance. Films like Mandy, Pig and the Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent kicked off this era but Nic proved this renaissance was just getting started last year when he starred in the Ari Aster produced horror dramedy Dream Scenario A typical boring, college professor dad is suddenly thrust into the limelight when thousands of people around the world start inexplicably dreaming of him but what starts as a fun global experience quickly takes a dark turn when the dreams turn to nightmares and he has to navigate the consequences of his new unwanted fame. Dream Scenario stars “that guy from that thing” character actor Dylan Baker, Emmy award winning actress Julianne Nicholson, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt regular and an actress who can’t help but make most men prematurely ejaculate Dylan Gelula, the Ladies Man himself Tim Meadows, a guy who can’t seem to stop flirting with his cousin Michael Cera and of course, the man of all of our dreams, Academy Award winning actor Nicolas Kim Coppola better known as Nicolas Cage.

When we last left the world’s first family, The Croods were on their way to box office dominance and started a journey to find the perfect place to live. Unfortunately for the entire planet the continuation of their journey was pushed back due to development hell until the fall of 2020 which for some odd reason wasn’t a great time to be hanging out in movie theaters. Nevertheless The Croods managed to make another small fortune and learned to walk upright again just like the rest of us with The Croods: A New Age The Croods continue their hunt for a new home away from the sprawling hellscape they left behind in the first movie only to stumble upon a walled-in idyllic paradise but there’s just one problem, this new land is already inhabited by some insufferable hippies who see The Croods as a bunch of unevolved primitive cavemen and soon hatch a plan to give neanderthals the boot and steal Guy for themselves. The Croods: A New Age gives us one of the final performances from screen legend Cloris Leachman, newcomers to the franchise - the amazing Leslie Mann and everyone’s favorite Imp (George RR Martin’s words, not ours!) Peter Dinklage, Hollywood’s go-to when they need a snarky character Ryan Reynolds, Oscar winner Emma Stone and two-time nominee Catherine Keener, and of course the cave-dad we all wish we could get into a cuddle pile with, Academy Award winning actor Nicolas Kim Coppola better known as Nicolas Cage.

The last time Nicolas Cage did a Marvel movie we ended up with the disastrously awful 2011 film Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance, so in true Nic Cage fashion he followed up that blunder with a masterpiece. Spoilers, when you meet this kid, you’ll want to stomp him to death too. In 1989 Cary Elwes, Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson and Nicolas Cage were already bonified leading man Hollywood stars, so how in the name of God were they convinced to show up as bit characters in a horribly written cheesy as all hell 80’s “comedy” that feels like it was written by a horny 13 year old on acid? We’ll do our best to figure that out as we suffer through 90 minutes of wall to wall torture momentarily broken up by possibly Nicolas Cage’s most wacky over the top character of all time: Never On Tuesday Two doofuses slam into the only other car on a deserted highway on their way to California then ogle a smoking hot lesbian for the duration of the film while major Hollywood stars show up randomly to deliver the worst performances of their careers. They should have just called this “hey, you know how like women are hot? THE MOVIE”. Never On Tuesday stars a guy who grew up to look like he has to go door to door to explain that he touched an 8 year old once but it was a huge misunderstanding and eventually found his calling as the director of Friday Night Lights Peter Berg, a bit part actor who is probably best known as “satellite technician” in Iron Man 3 Andy Lauer, the poor women who has to spend the entirety of this film dodging the advances of the creepiest batch of assholes ever assembled in one film who is best known as Susan Ivanova on Babylon 5 Claudia Christian, AND for some inexplicable reason features cameos from Cary Elwes, Gilbert Gottfried, Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson and of course the only reason we’re watching this piece of crap Academy Award winning actor and weirdest Ferrari owner on Earth Nicolas Kim Coppola better known as Nicolas Cage.

You’d think if you were given Nicolas Cage, Tom Sizemore, Thomas Jane and one of the most fascinating tales to come from easily the most memorable war in history it would make for one hell of a movie and an absolute slam dunk at the box office. You’d think. Instead, we got a boring, pandering mess with some of the worst CGI since Sharknado, a critical and box office bomb that sunk the careers of everyone involved. With that in mind let’s all take some sea sickness pills, clutch your dismembered body parts tight and try not to kill yourselves till the end as we do our best to survive USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage As much as we wish we could just play Quint’s speech from Jaws here since it is a masterfully delivered synopsis of our story, it is far too powerful and captivating to accurately describe what happens in this movie. Instead we’ll keep it brief, unlike this unnecessarily long film, and say the USS Indianapolis is sent on a top secret mission to deliver parts for the atomic bomb but on their way home are sunk by a Japanese submarine and left to be feasted on by sharks for the next five days that seem to go on in real time as we all slowly die with them. USS Indianapolis: Men of Spirits of Courage New Orleans stars Nic’s Bringing Out the Dead co-star who really hops off the screen in this one: Tom Sizemore, the OG Punisher himself Thomas Jane, a character actor with over 40 years in the biz who is probably still best known as Ajax from the Warriors James Remar, a whole host of promising young actors whose careers were catastrophically destroyed by this film, and of course, the captain of this steaming pile of ship (get it) an Academy Award winning actor who should be court martialed for making us sit through this film Nicolas Kim Coppola better known as Nicolas Cage.

In the late 80’s, Nicolas Cage was sent a script about a male gigolo which he immediately fell in love with but sadly the script sat on the shelf for the next 15 years since no director wanted to touch it until Nic, at the height of his stardom, said, ‘you know what, screw it, why don’t I direct it myself’. So, grab yourself some protection as we take a long meandering look at the rarely explored world of male prostitution that only Nicolas Cage had the balls to direct: Sonny After returning home from the Army to early 80’s New Orleans, Sonny Philips tries to leave a life of male prostitution behind but after he can’t find a job he slowly returns to the seedy world he swore to leave behind thanks to his brothel owning mom and prostitute girlfriend. Sonny stars legendary character actor and Nic’s Wild at Heart co-star Harry Dean Stanton, American Pie, American Beauty and American Virgin star Mena Suvari (don’t ask us why she was in 4 movies that started with American in three years), two time Academy Award nominated English actress and world’s greatest mom Brenda Blethyn, another incredible character actor with over 220 credits to his name Seymour Cassel, and of course the director of this film and most colorful pimp on either side of the Mississippi Academy Award winning actor Nicolas Kim Coppola better known as Nicolas Cage.

One of our favorite things about doing this show is that we get to talk about the incredible hidden gems of Nicolas Cage’s career that most audiences have never heard of and there’s possibly no better example of that than a small budget indie post-western neo-noir film from 1993 that, despite being Nic’s highest rated film on Rotten Tomatoes, has been largely forgotten. So hop in the car, light a cigarette and ride along with us as we examine the little masterpiece that is Red Rock West. A down on his luck ex-marine goes in search of work in the Podunk town of Red Rock, Wyoming only to be mistaken as a hitman sent to kill a man’s wife. What follows is a tale of desperation, betrayal, sex and of course murder. Red Rock West stars one of the greatest actors ever to live and an absolute treat anytime he’s on screen Dennis Hopper, Twin Peaks star and bombshell Lara Flynn Boyle, legendary country singer Dwight Yoakam, an amazing character actor who seemed to show up in everything during the 80’s and 90’s JT Walsh, and of course, a man who knows how to get himself into sticky situations Academy Award winning actor Nicolas Kim Coppola better known as Nicolas Cage.

Francis Ford Coppola was already a legend in 1986 having made a slew of cinematic masterpieces like Apocalypse Now and the first two Godfather films so it’s not a shock that he was slightly pissed when he cast his nephew Nic in one of his films and he rewarded one of the most celebrated Director’s ever to live by turning his character into a live action cartoon character. What happens when you take a classic story from 1843 everyone has already heard a thousand times, pay a warehouse full of animators to painstakingly hand draw the animation in the era of Pixar box office dominance and toss two obnoxious mice doing their best Mr. Bean impression over half of the film? As a boy, Nicolas Cage grew up watching Nosferatu, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and of course the original Dracula with his dad Augustus so being able to play the dark lord on screen had always been a lifelong dream. In Hollywood you’d better believe if you make $350 million on a vaguely original idea you’re getting a sequel, so it’s no shock that Disney brought back the team from 2004’s National Treasure in 2007 for another history inspired treasure hunting adventure. Unfortunately, as is often the case with sequels, the follow up basically copy and pasted the script from the first movie, changed a few locations, slapped on a new coat a paint and called it good since who wants to mess with a great formula. And it absolutely worked, leading to the highest grossing film of Nicolas Cage’s career at that point. So join us as we breakdown the cookie cutter sequel to National Treasure: National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Why make a follow up to a controversial film that even director Werner Herzog didn’t think should be named after it since they share little to nothing in common? So, get ready for a bumpy drug filled romp through the streets of post-Katrina New Orleans as we breakdown an unnecessary follow up with a ridiculously long name: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. After a back injury, “good cop turned bad” Terrence McDonagh is having a rough go of it. His painkiller addiction has spiraled out of control, he owes money all over town and the only person who can pull him back from the edge of destruction is his prostitute girlfriend. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans reteams Nic with his Ghost Rider sweetheart Eva Mendes, stars two-time Academy nominee Michael Shannon, Pimp My Ride’s Xzibit, the always great in other things besides this movie Jennifer Colidge, the legendary and severely underutilized Val Kilmer and, the only man I want visiting my grandma in a nursing home, Academy Award winning actor, Nicolas Kim Coppola better known as Nicolas Cage.

ke two actors who can chew scenery like nobody’s business and team them up with one of the most over the top directors to ever film a guy jumping through the air whilst fire two guns in slowmo whilst going ahhh and what do you get? Face/Off features the face of a man you can tell just by the way he walks he’s a woman’s man John Travolta, son of legendary Director John Cassavetes and the guy who would go on to direct The Notebook: Nick Cassavetes, three time Academy Award nominee Joan Allen, the always scintillating Gina Gershon as well as Margaret Cho for a couple scene because why not and, Academy Award winning actor and the only face that could pull off the many ridiculous faces in Face/Off, Nicolas Kim Coppola better known as Nicolas Cage.

Paul Schrader had Dying of the Light ripped away from him by a greedy studio desperately trying to recoup the $5 million dollars they gave him to make something even moderately coherent. But Paul Schrader would not be denied.
