SCN's 15th Anniversary: a convo w/Anthony Wills (Kilchoman) Revisited/Remixed
In celebration of Single Cask Nation's 15th anniversary, Joshua and Jason revisit a conversation they had with Anthony Wills, Owner and Managing Director of Kilchoman Distillery. When Single Cask Nation launched, the first three casks of whisky bottled were from Arran, BenRiach, and Kilchoman. We here at SCN HQ consider ourselves incredibly lucky to have been the only independent bottlers to have legally bottled a cask of Kilchoman independently. The boys discuss this and other things as a new introduction to this older episode, one of their favorite conversations to date. Joshua and Jason consider themselves incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to travel all over the world to interview some of the most interesting people within the whisky-making industry (and each guest is as interesting as the next). Few, however, are able answer things as candidly as the good Anthony Wills does in this episode. It's his distillery so he gets to do things and talk the way he likes. We like this. We are thankful for this. So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Extra! Extra!! Padcost listener "Tomnamurchan" challenges the J-Team to a Blind Tasting!
There are few things the Joshua, Jason, and Jess love more than interaction with their listeners. Tom J. (aka "Tomnamurchan") is one of the more interactive listeners. He’s always sending questions, letting the team know when he’s enjoyed an episode or a new bottling. On top of that, he’s just a genuinely nice person. A while back he sent over some samples to be tasted blindly, and while they were in Scotland, the J‑Team tasted those whiskies and recorded the blind tasting. Joshua also brought in an insanely special pour to blind-taste Jason and Jess. Will the J‑Team get these whiskies right? Will they get them wrong? There’s only one way to find out. Thanks again to Tom for sending the samples. You are appreciated more than you know. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. Joshua sits down with Vince Lucca of Powdermen Spirits Co.
A few episodes ago Jason asked Joshua if there were any distilleries of note in his home state of Connecticut (the pizza capitol of the world) and Joshua named just a few, one of them being Powdermen Spirits Co. Located in Simsbury CT, Vince Lucca is producing delicious (and award winning) bourbon at Powdermen Spirits Co. and he's doing it in a way that's very unique; in a way that may have some hesitate or -- gasp -- say nay! Listen up nay sayers (and neigh sayers!), you need to listen to Joshua's conversation with Vince and hear and learn about his process because it's unlike anything you may have heard of before, and while it may not be traditional, it's making some damn fine whisky. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Extra! Extra!! Virginia Distillery Co Celebrates 10 years. J&J taste their new Gingerbread Stout Cask whisky!
10 years of distillation -- what a milestone for Virginia Distillery Company and for American Single Malt writ large! Joshua and Jason discuss these 10 years but talk, too, about their relationship with the company that goes back 15+ years ago, before the distillery started producing their own spirits. The duo also taste through VDC's new Gingerbread Stout Cask Matured release. Add to this, Joshua discovers that there's a difference between a "Snickerdoodle" cookie and a "Snickers" cookie, which he had been calling, in his head, a "Snickerdoodle" because it actually resembles a Snickers bar. It gets very controversial, people. The good news is, Joshua has shared his in-house "Hatton's-Snickers-Doodle" recipe below which is *delicious*. See below, and try it at home! We'd love to hear your thoughts! Hatton's Snickers-Doodles: 1 cup Unsalted Butter (softened) 1 cup Brown Sugar (tightly packed) 1/2 cup Sugar 2 large Eggs 1 teaspoon Vanilla 2 1/4 cups Flour 3/4 teaspoon Baking Soda 1 teaspoon Salt 2 cups Torrone Nougut (finely chopped) 1 cup Milk Chocolate Chips Method Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar, and sugar until light and fluffy and pale yellow in color. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla. Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt. Fold in chocolate chips and Torrone Nougat. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges start to become a light golden color. Let cool for at least 10-15 minutes before removing from the baking sheet. Put a cookie in your mouth and eat it. Repeat. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. Getting Über Geeky about Clynelish Distillery with Ewan Morgan of Diageo
Ok, whisky geeks, this is why you subscribe the One Nation Under Whisky Padcost. It's in depth whisky conversation like this. Jason and Ewan go so far down the Clynelish rabbit hole, discussing science, flavor, and even mythology, that as they venture down the rabbit hole they bypass Alice and all the inhabitants of Wonderland. It's wonderful. Note: This episode is on YouTube and there's a powerpoint presentation in there that is SO INCREDIBLY worth seeing. Ewan has only ever shown this powerpoint once before and it's the most amazing, in depth thing you'll ever see. If you love Clynelish get ready to understand why you love it so much (and then start to love it even more). Pablo Goldbarg of Catador Itinerante, Independent Bottler of World Whiskies
Independent Bottling tends to have a sharp focus on Scotch whiskies, specifically single malt. There are a few notable bottlers that focus solely on American Spirits (Lost Lantern and Crowded Barrel come to mind here) but there's no independent bottler that focuses solely on World Whiskies. Well, not until now. Meet Pablo Goldbarg of Catador Itinerante, an independent bottler who does just that. He's also a long time friend of Joshua and Jason. Here's to a great conversation and a lot of laughs* *apologies to the Spanish speaking community for Joshua's terrible attempts at speaking your language. Extra! Extra!! J&J Discuss Indian Tariffs on Scotch Whisky Dropping from 150% to 75%
Joshua & Jason discuss the fact that India dropped its tariffs on Scotch whisky from 150% to 75% with the aim to drop them down to 40% over the next 10 years. This is a boon to the Scotch whisky industry especially during these slower times. Also, the boys discuss a question that popped up on the internet: “What's the best age to bottle Scotch whisky at?” Sure, it’s a somewhat ridiculous, highly subjective, question but they tackle it nonetheless because not all heroes wear capes! ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Christopher "Seabass" Sebastian of Blind Barrels (and beloved padcost listener)
Man-o-Manschewitz, such a brilliant conversation between Jason and Christopher "Seabass" Sebastian of Blind Barrels! Seabass is a friend, a longtime padcost listener, the receiver of our very first listener nickname (wethinks??), a whisky curator for Blind Barrels, and a helluva good guy. The conversation, the history behind Blind Barrels, the fact that Seabass has 87 children, and the blind tasting between Jason and Seabass... It all makes for a wonderful episode. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. A Much Needed J&J Catch Up (Ketchup?)!
So far, 2025 has been a year of travel for both Joshua and Jason, and the type of travel that has had them separate from one another. For a couple of guys who tend to be tied to the hip, it's been a wee bit strange. Now, we've been teasing the launch of a very big episode, a much anticipated episode, and we promise you, that will be coming soon (like, this season soon!), but for now the boys wanted to have a catch up, breathe a little, and just share some stories. FYI: There is a YouTube version of this episode should you wish to listen with your eyeballs. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving.
