Ongekend Onrecht

The childcare benefit scandal or 'toeslagenaffaire' has left its mark on the entire Dutch population. But do we actually talk enough with the disadvantaged parents instead of about them? We talk with Batya Brown (35) and Nassima Elidrissi (41) about their specific positions as women of colour in the scandal that revealed institutional racism within the Dutch tax authorities. Ongekend Onrecht: The story of Nassima and Batya

The childcare benefit scandal or 'toeslagenaffaire' has left its mark on the entire Dutch population. What was the role of the media in this scandal? And how is this perceived by those who were actually disadvantaged? We talked with Nassima Elidrissi (41) and Batya Brown (35), two incredible mothers from Rotterdam who were wrongfully left with huge debts. The scandal exposed the institutionalised racism within the Dutch tax administrations. We talk with Batya and Nassima about their specific positions as women of colour.  Illustration by Marie van der Donk. This production is by order of the course ‘Communicating Inequality in the City’ of International Bachelor Communication and Media at EUR. Created by Fenna Nijeboer, Serena van den Boogerd, Romy Zhang and Lara de Vleeschhouwer *Edit: the term “well-educated” was coined in our explanation in the podcast. However: “well” is subjective. We meant to say academically educated. Apologies for the inconvenience.
