Honoring Joel “H Train” Hunt with the Mission in Flight Award
In this special episode of Oscar Mike Radio, I had the honorof presenting the second annual Mission and Flight Award to Joel Hunt, better known as “H Train,” founder of Military Broadcast Radio. This award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond in ervice to the veteran community, and Joel embodies that mission every day.Joel leads a network of approximately 20 veteran podcasthosts, operates a Roku TV channel, and continues to mentor veteran creators who are finding their voice in media. What makes his work even more remarkable isthat he does it all on a tight budget, driven by passion and purpose rather than resources.During the episode, I reflected on Joel’s resilience usingwhat I call the “duck” metaphor. To Joel, the duck is calm and steady on the surface, while working tirelessly beneath. That image perfectly captures how Joel continues to push forward, adapt, and support others no matter what the obstacles. His dedication to elevating veteran voices and building aplatform for storytelling has made a lasting impact across the military and podcasting communities. With this recognition, Joel joins Richard Sherman as arecipient of the Mission and Flight Award and earns a place on the Oscar Mike Radio Wall of Heroes.Joel, thank you for everything you do for veterans andcreators alike. In part three of my Oscar Mike Radio series on J.J.Millett, I sit down with his aunt, Emily Wheeler, to share a story that demands attention and action. Emily describes J.J. as a kind, respectful Army National Guard veteran who served in Afghanistan and later battled PTSD after returning home.We talked about the moment everything changed. Oscar Mike Radio – Special Edition – Joseph “JJ’ Millett – Part 2
In this emotional episode of Oscar Mike Radio, I sit down with Elizabeth Dubois, a homeland security expert and cousin of Army National Guard veteran JJ Millet. We share a deeply emotional and urgent conversation about JJ’s case, where he now faces domestic terrorism charges after a psychiatric crisis triggered by medication prescribed by the VA.Elizabeth gently guides me through what truly happened: how JJ made the brave choice to call the 988-crisis line, voluntarily surrender his weapons, and seek help. Actions like these, to us, show someone desperately in need of support, not punishment. We also confront the painful reality of his personal therapeutic journals being wrongly labeled as a “manifesto,” and what that dangerous mischaracterization could mean, not just for JJ, but for every veteran who might hesitate to reach out for help out of fear of being criminalized.JJ and Elizabeth are united in their message. This is not just about JJ’s story; it’s about ensuring that no veteran feels alone or afraid when seeking help. It’s about accountability, compassion, and the devastating consequences when the system fails to protect those who served. You can make a difference by sharing JJ’s story and raising your voice for help. JJ, you are not alone.

Oscar Mike Radio – Special Edition – Joseph “JJ’ Millett – Part 1
This episode of Oscar Mike Radio is one of the most personaland emotional conversations I’ve had.I sat down with Courtney Millett to talk about her brother,Joseph “JJ” Millett, not as a headline, not as a court case, but as a human being. A brother. A veteran. Someone who served his country and then came home carrying wounds most people will never see.Courtney opens her heart about JJ’s military service, hisbattle with PTSD, and the moment everything changed. What should have been a cry for help turned into something far more painful for their family:confusion, fear, and the shock of watching a mental health crisis treated like a crime instead of a call for compassion. This episode isn’t just JJ’s story. It’s about every veteranwho feels like they must suffer in silence. It’s about families who are trying to hold everything together while watching someone they love struggle. And it’s about the urgent need to respond to mental health with understanding, support, and humanity, and not punishment. If you listen to one episode that reminds you how powerfulempathy can be, let it be this one.We are JJ Strong. And JJ — you are not alone.

Their passion and insight reminded me of the importance of keeping these stories alive for future generations. 📚 “Earn It” — Leadership, Legacy, and Lessons One of the key parts of our discussion focused on the book Earn It, which chronicles the life and philosophy of Command Sergeant Major of the Army William “Bill” Gates. Through this book, readers gain an authentic look at leadership, mentorship, and what it truly means to serve with integrity as an NCO. We discussed how the principles of “Earn It” reflect the values that continue to shape the Army today, from personal accountability and education to resilience and loyalty. These lessons reach far beyond the military; they apply to anyone striving to lead with honor.🪖 The Mission of the NCO Historical Society - The NCO Historical Society exists to collect and share the stories of past and present NCOs — the backbone of the U.S. Army. During our conversation, Colonel Martin and CSM Elder shared how the Society preserves history through oral storytelling, publications, education, and outreach programs. Oscar Mike Radio – 464 - Andrew McCawley – NECHV
As I said at the start of this show, The New England Center and Home for Veterans have had a profound impact on my life. At the time, it was the New England Shelter and Home for Veterans. I wasn’t homeless, but I needed something that said I had technical acumen, even though my Marine Corps MOS could only be done by a small percentage of people. I got a hand up when I needed it, and giving back to the New England Center and Home for Veterans seemed like a matter of course. For this episode, I talked to Andrew “Andy” McCawley, CEO of the New England Center and Home for Veterans. We discussed the progress and ongoing challenges in addressing veteran homelessness, highlighting the center’s evolution from a shelter to a provider of comprehensive services supporting independent living. Andy shared insights on prevention efforts, the importance of community support, and details about the 23rd Annual Leave No One Behind Gala, featuring NASA astronaut Captain Sunita Williams as keynote speaker. My desire is that this conversation inspires you to learn more about the Center’s mission to assist veterans in overcoming complex challenges and achieving stability with dignity. “Every Veteran in a Victory”.
