I remember how I felt when I became old enough to vote. Nervous, Anxious, Energetic. Standing in line at the polls at my university, it was an exciting moment. I was finally able to fulfill my civic duty. But in America, to this day, we treat communities of color, especially Black citizens differently at the ballot box. What should be a constitutional right for all to express their voice in the running of our nation is instead hindered by the systematic voter suppression caused by both the legacy of disenfranchisement laws and new discriminatory policies by the GOP. But today’s episode of Do You Know discusses a moment of physical voter suppression involving the use of violent, physical force to stop Black people from voting. A moment where white terrorists like the KKK clashed against prominent Black community activists in a town called Ocoee. This is the Ocoee Massacre of 1920. On February 19, 1942 Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 after the tragic Pearl Harbor attack. Over 110,000 Japanese-Americans were forced into concentration camps. Today, we had the chance to speak with Yukio Shimomura, one of the survivors from these camps. Our conversation focuses on the recent hate crimes happening around the United States against the Asian community and patriotism in a time of injustice. A 19-year old Black man, named Dick Rowland strides down Main Street. Once an orphan with his two sisters, Rowland was adopted by his current family and raised by them in Tulsa. He played basketball at the local Booker T. Washington high school, before he dropped out to begin work as a shoe-shiner at a parlor on Main Street. But right now, Rowland feels the call of nature. He exits the parlor and walks into a multi-story complex called the Drexel Building whose top floor bathroom is the only approved restroom for black workers on Main Street. Operating the elevator is a 17 year old white teenager named Sarah Page. She watches Rowland enter. Rowland had used this elevator before. And Page had operated this elevator for Rowland in the past. This was a routine interaction. Something they had done before and should have continued doing without incident. But what happens next, will change both their lives and Tulsa, Oklahoma forever. In America, democracy is seen as the bedrock of our nation. It girds the very foundation of our constitution: to have elected leaders, not monarchical kings or queens. We accept the results of fair elections and we uphold the peaceful transition of power. But what if we didn’t? What if we attempted to violently replace leaders we didn’t like? But, of course,  we saw this actually attempted from white supremacists on January 6th, 2021 who stormed the U.S Capitol. Imagine what would have happened if they had succeeded? Unfortunately, the descendants of those who live in Wilmington, North Carolina don’t have to imagine. Because in 1898, white supremacists did violently attempt a coup to take down their city’s government; simply for electing black politicians to office. And, they succeeded.
