    Groundswell's Glorious Festival Vibes

This week's round-up from the Groundswell Agriculture festival. I share my reflections, pick out one of my fave talks of the show and welcome a new member in this week's vlog from Agri-TechE.⛺ 😎 A more considered set of conversations at Groundswell this year - and Happy 10th Birthday to the Festival. Even the Secretary of State Emma Reynolds loved it!🫶 Inspired by the session by Pasture for Life about data capture and hard metrics not always collecting and quantifying what farmers instinctively see, sense and feel. "A lack of data doesn't necessarily mean that something isn't true." A nice segue into the theme for our own #REAP2026 conference in November!🫵 Lots of talk about the ADOPT programme (FYI Chris Lyons is your Go-To Person at Innovate UK about all things ADOPT) - this really is the way for farmers to de-risk their decisions to embrace new innovation. Great session chaired by Tom MacMillan with Lindsay Roome, Simon Pearson MBE and Bryony Gittins. 🪟 Window 1 opened of the new Sustainable Farming Incentive round. Brace yourself for the mad scramble!📣 Welcome to a new member BionemaUk  Group Limited - Groundswell was a perfect setting for the discussions about the technologies they develop and manufacture for biocontrol in agriculture.....Plus we recorded some podcasts and did some filming which we'll be dropping over the next few weeks, but special thanks to:David Linton | Cristóbal Uauy | Sarah Evered | Russell Batten | Louise PennAlso a shout out to the amazing little Agri-TechE team - Kate Brunswick | Becky Dodds | Kristina Kalinina | Deryn Gant | Sophie Butler | Laura BouvetNews, trends, and breakthroughs shaping the future of farming, brought to you by Agri-TechE. Oak before ash, we're in for a splash 🌦️

Forecasting the weather, crop performance and pest and disease outbreaks has been peppered with rhyming slogans and old wives’ tales (DM me to discover the one about the right time to drill sugar beet - too rude for the vlog!). This week the Agri-TechE round-up is from a sugar beet field, talking about the top tech being used by British Beet Research Organisation (BBRO) to bring some science to the slogans, using AI and smart traps to detect and predict beet moth and Cerospera (leaf spot). Also this week:🖱️ Working alongside Apple  and IBM  as part of the University of East Anglia School of Computing Sciences Industry Advisory Board – what does our sector need for new computing graduates to be “Employment Ready?”🛜 An opportunity to learn about the private 5G network trial connecting up smart devices across an entire farming estate in Gloucestershire – join the Open Day where we are partnering with Overbury Enterprises. ☣️ Chemical risk management through software as a service – learning more about farmer and agronomist empowerment (within regulatory rules) from Kate Bromfield. 💷 The funding ceiling for the farmer-led ADOPT R&D grants has gone up to £200,000. Peonies & Pangenomes

We’ve all wilted and dried out in the UK heatwave this week… imagine the impact on those growing high value, short-season crops such as #peonies? How much of their marketable crop was a peony grower left with this week? Answer in the video…..👏 Big thanks to the team at Niab for a great event, where we talked precision breeding, and learning how crop #genetics might influence the microbial communities living around plant roots, and airborne detection of yellow rust. 🧬 Learning what a pangenome is and why understanding the one for wheat can unlock greater breeding insights, thanks to the work underway by Rachel Rusholme Pilcher at the Earlham Institute.🦠 With the rise of microbial crop products, what are the rules about patenting #biologicals? Ian MacLeod of J A Kemp is on hand to guide you through it.📣 The next in the series of #AgriChat has landed, where I discuss the importance of an independent national capability around spray technology research and validation with Philip Carpenter of DE SANGOSSE . 🗞️ And a newsletter landed - did you receive yours/ We had lots of policy updates in this one!News, trends, and breakthroughs shaping the future of farming, brought to you by Agri-TechE. UK Land Use Framework Launched

Friday round up from Agri-TechE - in a week that has seen the launch of the UK’s Land Use Framework and our hosting of the big ARISE programme delegates from North and South America. This week:- The Farming Minister was at the University of Reading to talk about the report around land use for food production, nature recovery, housing, energy production, communities and amenities. Good to see a focus on domestic food production but the "More With Less" message is writ large......agriculture is going to have to be even more productive. - The 6 month ARISE programme culminated in a UK visit for the delegates at the Norwich Research Park, Lincoln Institute for Agri-Food Technology and WMG, University of Warwick. A great showcase of different innovation ecosystems in the UK - we wish we had time to visit all the UK has to offer. - The Innovation Summit was hosted at Niab and featured more than 80 partnering meetings (yes, 80!) between the ARISE delegates and our community, as well as talks about cross-border funding for research, innovation and collaboration. Closing with a fantastic insight into Dyson Farming Research by Richard Meredith.....the longest post-talk queue we have ever seen of people wanting to talk to him afterwards! Big shout out to the ARISE delegation from some excellent global institutions, including Embrapa, the Yield Lab LATAM, the Yield Lab Institute, Washington University in St Louis, Taylor Geospatial, Donald Danforth Plant Science Centre, agcenter, Universidad Austral, Tecnologico de Monterrey, CREA, as well as Agritierra and Earthbase, and Newcastle University and Harper Adams University.News, trends, and breakthroughs shaping the future of farming, brought to you by Agri-TechE. Down Under at evokeAG

This week's Agri-TechE round-up come from high above the Yarra river, hot (literally) from the AgriFutures evokeAG conference in Melbourne, Australia. 🫶 Aligning mindsets with some utter legends in global #agritech, in particular the awesome Brendan O'Connell; Peter Wren-Hilton; Meg Lovegrove and Rob Hulme. 💡 Being inspired by the keynote address by Andrew Bate, farmer and founder of SwarmFarm Robotics - check out my blog on our website with thoughts about agri-tech R & D.....(as well as E, A and S). And while we're on the alphabet soup, some reflections about TRLs - are they fit for purpose for agri-tech innovations? 🤝 Very much enjoyed seeing our Antipodean members, includingthe Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC), Agnition Ventures and also the Aussie arm of Dyneval. And remember Moa Technology from #REAP2024 - they were here with a stand as well. 👏 Well done to the UK companies on the Innovate UK Global Incubator Programme - Airponix Ltd, Polysolar Limited; O2 Agri Ltd; Cleobury PM; Rare Earth Global; and The Extraordinary Berry Company. You did the UK proud showcasing your innovations around virus free seed potatoes, flexible solar panelling for polytunnels, the benefits of hyper-oxygenation in livestock prodution, waste valorisation for fertiliser, the wonders of hemp and innovative glasshouse design for strawberry production. 🙏 A massive thanks and well done to the amazing team who delivered the conference - particular shout-outs to Harriet Mellish, David Lord, Alex Bundock; Harriet Coutts; as well as Emma McMahon and Millie Childs. I enjoyed the Farmers2Founders pitching session - fast-paced but high quality presentations, and great discussions with Gabrielle Munzer and Thomas Williams about the investment landscape and a new solution to mitigate GHG emissions from ruminants. Candid thoughts on investment, scaling, partnerships and exporting

What does the UK’s #agritech community hope the Modern Industrial Strategy will deliver on the ground? This week’s Friday round-up comes from  @syngenta 's global R&D HQ, where we debated four potential pillars of growth – investment, scaling, partnerships and exporting. Huge thanks to Gardin, RootWave, Tropic and AgriSound for candid sharing of the importance of these pillars for the growth of their businesses. Throw in a site tour, meeting the next generation of #robodogs for crop scouting, and a scene-set from George Freeman who – in this week of the UK Budget - stands ready to support agri-tech in his capacity as Trade Envoy and the engine behind the 30:50:50 strategy for innovation for agriculture and horticulture. Plus it’s our year end where we reflect on the year that's passed and look forward to the year ahead. International Inspirations for UK Agriculture

From AI (in all its definitions) and IOT via the “AKIS” and learning from the Irish and New Zealand agri-food systems – with some big thoughts on UK horticulture. This week we discovered:The power of AI in distilling complex content – Burleigh Dodds commissions publications from world experts on topics around agri-food, including regenerative agriculture. Their AgNetZero platform enables a quality referenced interrogation across all their content. You can have a 30 day free trial to have a play. The key elements of an effective Agriculture Knowledge Innovation System, at a workshop run by ADAS, hosted by NIAB. What could be the future priorities for pre-competitive research in UK horticulture? The current status of agriculture in New Zealand, and why it’s a good time to be a dairy farmer right now. And we welcomed some new members, including Ladybird IOT by Forest Rock, using LoRaWAN agricultural sensors across a range of parameters, including temperature, humidity, nutrient sensing, and leaf wetness data – helping farmers assess real-time crop needs.News, trends, and breakthroughs shaping the future of farming, brought to you by Agri-TechE. “The times, they are a’changin’…….”

Closing the week where we’ve seen the REAP2025 conference and the community come together around the 30:50:50 Summit for innovation in agriculture – our industry is only heading one way. And we ALL need to be part of the change. Big love to everyone who was part of the REAP conference, one of our favourite reflections in the feedback was the noticeable positivity and “can-do” vibe among the farm businesses, innovators and researchers in the room.   Minette Batters DL set the tone for change with her excellent keynote address (there's a hot-off-the-press story about it in Farmers' Weekly). The agritech start-ups revealed new solutions to combat soil compaction, molecular diagnostics for soil, plants and livestock and ways of detecting nitrogen use efficiency from space…and so much more (check out the story on the Agri-TechE website to meet them all!). Scientists in our “Research Into Practice” session used Lego, a watering can and a cupcake to link their research to the real-world of farming. Meanwhile…… The 30:50:50 Agri-Science Summit, hosted by George Freeman FRSA MP reflected on the ambition to reframe farm policy, and the regulatory and R&D agendas for UK agriculture. George launched the vision at our Challenge Convention earlier this year, and it’s at the heart of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Science and Technology in Agriculture. A great Summit, excellent talks and brilliant networking, all ably supported by Niab. We are at a genuine crossroads for the industry in the UK, sure it’s a very challenging time, but if we are serious about the future of our industry, food production and environmental stewardship, I think we should view this week / month / year as a critical turning point.News, trends, and breakthroughs shaping the future of farming, brought to you by Agri-TechE. Can the EU crack healthy soils?

How do we feel about an EU-wide framework for assessing and monitoring soils? The Council of the EU has just formally adopted a Soil Monitoring Directive, with the aim of achieving “healthy soils across Europe by 2050.” (As someone recently pointed out, 2050 will be quite the watershed year, if the many MANY aspirations are indeed achieved by then 🙂).  Anyway – given the challenge the UK has had trying to untangle the whole “healthy soils” agenda, let’s hope the EU can crack it. What do you think? In other news: On Monday we’re kicking off Agri-Tech Week 2025 – we’ll be criss-crossing the country, in person and online, with a host of events with a big clutch of BASIS Reg Ltd and NRoSO points up for grabs. #ATW2025. And finally, a warm welcome to three of our newest Agri-TechE members: 🍓 Bitwise Agronomy – delivering the Holy Grail of predictive yield modelling for the berry sector (including 🫐 and more).🌾 SporeSense – a spin-out from The University of Manchester providing advanced warning of the onset of yellow rust in wheat (seeking wheat farmers to help trial it – you will be paid!).🚜 Agri-Sense UK – helping farmers in Yorkshire adopt new tools and practices in precision agriculture.
