OutsiderSF
by OutsiderSF
We here at Outsider want to provide a preview of both the reality we're currently making and the one we'd prefer to live in. At times gritty and brutal in its honesty, the goal isn't to spread panic or despair, but to hold the present accountable and envision a free and constructive future. The Painted Owl
The Painted Owl - a story inspired by One Thousand and One Nights originally intended for a press that has sadly closed it's doors. The stories though, they are never ending... This episode is also available as a blog post: http://russlinton.com/2021/09/28/the-painted-owl/

A Priori
A Priori - Immanuel once understood the nature of reality. Lately, he's lost his grip...or it let go of him. My robot assistant is back this episode. Outside, there is noise. The heinous growling of a paint sprayer. I considered using it as a musical score for my reading and thought better of it....
-
Dispatch
A deep space probe returns to Earth having witnessed the wonders of the universe, but its mission is far from over...
-
The Caretaker
An encounter in a remote campground leads to the unraveling of one man's reality...

Could She Wear Their Skin
Season Two begins, wherein I read stories myself (God help us) and adopt a new podcast name - OutsiderSF as in Science Fiction, as in Subversive tales of the future from fringe perspectives...
-
Alter Ego
I've come full circle on season one of this podcast. This is one of the last short stories I tried submitting before going the full self-publish route. One of my favorites and possibly my best, I hope you enjoy this softer take on a superhero story.

Codename: Danger
First off, apologies for mucking with the format here so much. I was experimenting with breaking up stories into episodes and decided that wasn’t working. From now on, I’ll post the full story as well as provide a complete version for the podcast episode. This episode is also available as a blog...

Fat Man and Little Boy
Another tale from my short story collection, Empty Quiver. The gritty superhero world of Crimson Son is dark here as I continue to critique our notions of heroism and examine the human shortcomings of those we bestow that name upon. This episode is also available as a blog post:...
-
The ‘Cane Train
From my short story collection, Empty Quiver, based on my Crimson Son superhero universe. A word of warning - my comicbook characters provide little escapism. They are dark products of war and conflict, meant to offer a sobering look at ourselves and not a glimpse into a bright-eyed world of...

Change!
One man, a vending machine, and the fate of mankind... This episode is also available as a blog post: http://russlinton.com/2021/05/11/change/

Grandpa in a Box
The Grandpa Protocol. Enough said. I think the text to speech robot really adds something special to this story. All the missed cues and flat emotions only enhances the experience. Enjoy! This episode is also available as a blog post: http://russlinton.com/2021/02/23/grandpa-in-a-box/

The Precarious Perch of Lookout County
This story first appeared on the Wily Writers' Podcast. It was one of my earlier stories to see publication and had the added bonus of being read by a voice actor for their podcast. The theme, Weird Western, wasn't a genre I'd ever explored much, but my fantasy/wild west mash up apparently met…

Anachronistic – Part Two
Here's the final part of "Anachronistic." For a short story, it does have a very open ending and I've been asked if I had plans to continue it. There are none at this moment, but, in some ways I am as I explore all the possible worlds we like to immerse ourselves in... This episode is also...

Anachronistic – Part One
This story was never shopped for publication and instead ended up on my website. You will notice some limitations of the text-to-speech in this story. Also, the character names are often preceded by the "at" symbol, which makes more sense visually than in audio. With those things in mind, here's...

Trickster
This was one of my earliest publications with another disappeared venue, Writer’s Haven. I haven't saved the best for last, more an indicator of how far I've come on this journey. This was a story inspired by a comment from my wife's grandfather. Brief, slightly mysterious, it goes for a slow...
