How Canada Arms Israel's Genocide | Bill C-233 Explained

This exposes how Canadian-made weapons reach Israel - through legal loopholes embedded in Canada’s export system. We examine how Canada's export framework allows military goods to bypass oversight and accountability despite human rights violations.CREDITS:Produced, Written, Researched, and Edited (Visual and Audio): Wissam El Cheikh HassanScript Editor: Alex Patterson Post-Production Supervisors: Michael Bueckert & Yara ShoufaniSpecial thanks to Rachel Small from World Beyond War CanadaRESOURCES & DOCUMENTATION: - Bill C-233: https://www.parl.ca/DocumentViewer/en/45-1/bill/C-233/first-reading- Exposing The U.S. Loophole (July 2025): https://armsembargonow.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Exposing-Canadian-Military-Exports-to-Israel_07292025_compressed-.pdf - Exposing Canadian Military Exports to Israel (Nov. 2025): https://armsembargonow.ca/exposing-the-us-loophole-report/ - Global Production of the Israeli F-35 Joint Strike Program (Project Ploughshares): https://ploughshares.ca/global-production-of-the-israeli-f-35i-joint-strike-fighter/ - Judicializing Foreign Affairs (Hassan M. Conversation avec Paul Fauteux : CDPQ, Israël et liberté de parole

Divestment and Dismissal w/ Paul Fauteux

A conversation with Paul Fauteux, a lawyer and advocate specializing in International Law. Paul is also a former diplomat and has served as Director General in several federal departments, including Environment Canada and Indigenous and Northern Affairs. Paul shares a bizarre and rather troubling story about an incident that he experienced recently. His position as a sport mediator was not renewed citing “lack of impartiality” for sending two open letters to the CDPQ, urging them to divest from Israel. Thank you for listening to the ‘Palestine Debrief’ podcast. Ink of Resistence - Interlink vs Censorship w/ Hannah Mouchabek

Interlink Publishing is a fiercely independent, Palestinian-owned press—the only one of its kind in the U.S.—that’s been amplifying Palestinian and Arab voices since 1987. Known for bold, uncompromising titles—including bestsellers and frequently banned books—Interlink has remained steadfast in its mission, even as Genocide Bad draws coordinated smear campaigns and censorship attempts.Joining us today to talk about Palestinian storytelling in a publishing world that’s heavily gated and increasingly hostile to Palestinian perspectives is Hannah Mouchabeck—author, activist, and one of the siblings leading Interlink Publishing.Follow Hannah Mouchabek on Insta, X, and Facebook. Order GENOCIDE BAD here. The Vote Palestine Campaign w/ Yara Shoufani

Joining me today is Yara Shoufani from PYM to talk about the Vote Palestine initiative and platform. The Canadian federal election has officially been announced last Sunday, marking a crucial moment for voters who care about justice and human rights. This election carries particular significance in light of Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza and Canada’s lack of a clear and principled stance since its outbreak. From delaying its call for a ceasefire to suspending funding to UNRWA based on unproven allegations, Canada’s actions have repeatedly failed Palestinians. Additionally, while the government claims to have halted arms exports to Israel, it continues to indirectly supply weapons through U.S. loopholes. With this in mind, Palestinian organizers in Canada have mobilized to ensure that Palestine is a key election issue. The Global Push to Stop F-35 Transfers to Israel w/ Kelsey Gallagher

As Israel resumes its bombardment of Gaza following the collapse of the ceasefire and initial attacks relying solely on air strikes, this makes it all the more urgent to understand how the F-35s is actively used to commit these crimes. My guest today is Kelsey Gallagher from Project Ploughshares, a think tank that specialises in conflict zones and human rights abuses as well as broader canadian export patrol policy and transparency on arms transfers. The Rise of Anti Palestinian Racism in Canada amidst the Genocide w/ Dania Majid

To help us understand APR, its definitions, implication, importance of connection to the Nakba and how it evolved after Oct 7 I am joined by lawyer Dania Majid, co-founder and president of the Arab Canadian Lawyers Association, best known for defining APR in her 2022 publication Anti-Palestinian Racism: Naming, Framing, and Manifestations. She is also the artistic director of the Toronto Palestinian Film Festival.Despite an unprecedented spike in Anti-Palestinian Racism (APR) in Canada since the start of the genocide in Gaza on October 7 (details discussed in the Anti-Palestinian Racism in Canada 2023 Annual Report), APR has faced significant push back from the Canadian government. Nearly every mainstream media outlet has played a role in perpetuating APR, whether through biased coverage of Palestine-Israel, widespread anti-Palestinian rhetoric among commentators, or the framing of Palestinian rights advocacy as anti-Semitic. Understanding APR its real world consequences include job loss of voicing support of Palestinians, the justification of violence against Palestinians and their allies, and police using disproportionate force against peaceful protestors. Follow Arab Canadian Lawyers Association on X.Thank you for listening to the ‘Palestine Debrief’ podcast. The Lawsuit Challenging Canada’s Role in the Genocide w/ Emilio Dabed

In this episode we speak with Emilio Dabed, the founding member of Legal Centre for Palestine, a lawyer specialised in international law and constituational matter. We talk about the legal proceedings in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice against the Attorney General of Canada for Canada’s failure to act to prevent genocide and in violation of its legal obligations under the Genocide Convention of 1948 as well as the plaintiff’s rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom. The Plaintiffs seek a declaration that Canada has a duty to take all measures wihtin its power to prevent genocide, and that Canada has violated that duty. They also seek a declaration that Canada’s acts and omissions have villated the plaintiff’s Charter rights to security of the person and to equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimitation. Follow Legal Centre for Palestine on X and Instagram. How Zionism Perpetuates Antisemitism w/ Dr. Ariella Aïsha Azoulay

In this episode of Palestine Debrief, I speak with Dr. Ariella Aïsha Azoulay, a renowned scholar, filmmaker, and author whose work focuses on the intersections of colonialism, photography, and historical narratives. Ariella was born in Israel but rejects the Israeli identity, where she identfies as a Muslim Jew. The refers to Israel as The Zionist Settler colony during the episode. The importance of this conversation with Dr. Ariella is important to understand the historical and ideological underpinnings of how colonialism profoundly reshaped Jewish communities in North Africa and the Arab world, and integrating them into a Western construct. Ariella sheds light on how colonialism split people into groups that don't make sense, creating divisions that erased shared histories and communities and how like colonialism, Zionism, at its core, perpetuates antisemitism by co-opting Jewish identity and erasing diverse Jewish histories and traditions. In August 2024, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) revoked the charitable status of the Jewish National Fund of Canada (JNF). This is significant because the JNF is central to the Zionist movement, historically acquiring land in Palestine for exclusive Jewish settlement. Canada's Racist Visa Program for Gazans: with Safinaz El-Solh

On January 9th, 2024, IRCC started accepting applications for a Temporary Residence Visa Program for Gazans with Canadian Family Ties that was called "Crisis in Gaza: Special Measure for Extended Family". Not long after it became clear that the program was not designed to accept refugees. Nothing about the program was urgent and in comparison to past programs the “special measures” seem to highly indicate racism towards Palestinians. We have Safinaz El-Solh from Gazan Canadian Community Group who were directly affected by the crisis with family Gaza who organized together to focus on the program. How Canada Still Arms Israel: with Rachel Small

worldbeyondwar.org/canadastoparmingisraelEarlier in August the US government announced that General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems Inc. a Quebec-based company is the principal contractor in the sale of 50,000 high explosive mortar cartridges and related equipment to the Israeli military, which is worth $61 million US (or about $83 million in Canadian dollars). This is part of a total of $20 billion US weapon export announced and approved by the US to Israel. This catches Canada is several lies they have made since October. The lie of sending only “non-lethal” weapons. The lie that the Trudeau government stopped all arms exports to Israel earlier this year. As it turns out they do not need export permits nor approvals to send weapons to the US, which in turn sends them to the Israeli military. Here to talk to us more is Rachel Small from World Beyond War who has been monitoring and supporting grassroots resistance to the Canada-Israel arms trade. Follow Rachel on X. Canada is adamant on their support to Israel, despite when it is becoming extensively clear that Israel is driving the whole world to the brink of a third world war. With the attack that happened last Friday night in a school in Gaza that killed 100 people gathering for morning prayers, it is imperative to understand why Canada refuses to change its stance on Israel. Here to help us make sense of all this, is Professor of Sociology at Mount Royal University and author of 2 books, and writer of serval political articles on racism, decolonisation, in several news outlets Muhannad Ayyash.Follow Dr. Mohannad Ayyash on X.Thank you for listening to the ‘Palestine Debrief’ podcast. ICJ Advisory Opinion on Israel: with Michael Lynk

On July 19th 2024 the ICJ court released its decision regarding Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. It concluded in its ruling that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied territory is illegal and must end as soon as possible. It included Israel’s prolonged occupation, it’s settlement expansion, continuous annexation of the territory, its apartheid policies, as well as providing full reparations, restitution and compensation including the return of all the land and the evacuation of its settlements. Additionally, the ruling said that all states, including Canada, are under obligation to cooperate with the UN in bringing an end to the occupation, and are not to render any assistance in maintaining the situation created by Israel’s illegal presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Here to give us clarity on the ICJ ruling, its importance and significance, what to expect in how Canada would react, is Canadian legal academic, and associate professor at University of Western Ontario, professor Michael Lynk. He was the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the 1967 occupied Palestinian Territories. Follow Michael Lynk on X. Thank you for listening to the ‘Palestine Debrief’ podcast. McGill Student Encampment: with SPHR McGill

On April 2nd, pro-Palestinian student groups in Montreal started an encampment on the McGill campus, demanding that the university divest its finances from companies complicit in Israel's genocide in Gaza, like weapons companies BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin. Early this morning, on the 10th of July, it was dismantled. McGill hired a private security firm to shut down the encampment, after the university failed to have it disbanded by the police and following 2 injunctions which were rejected by Quebec courts. I want to share a conversation that I recorded last week with SPHR McGill, which is one of the key organizations behind the encampment. Although it was recorded prior to the dismantling of the camp, it remains extensively relevant to what has happened today and beyond. We discuss very important elements related to the cause of demonstrating Israel’s atrocities and the complicity of North American universities in genocide, through research and financial means. We also talk about the encampment’s mission and demands, McGill’s investments in weapons manufacturing, and about previous anti-war and anti-aparthied encampments on McGill.Thank you for listening to the ‘Palestine Debrief’ podcast. Israel Bombs Hospitals: with Dr. Yipeng Ge

Our guest for this episode is Dr. Yipeng Ge - follow him on Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Within the first 36 hours of Israel’s attack on Gaza after Oct. 7, Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahia, Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Al Quds Hospital in Gaza City, amongst other, have been attacked. And it didn’t stop there. For the past 8 months Israel has intentionally and aggressively targetting, attacking and bombing hospitals - to an extent that they are not hiding it anymore, and in many cases boasting about it.Within 2 months after Oct. 7 90% of Gaza’s hospital in the North were damaged or destroyed. As of Feb 13, only 10 hospitals in all of Gaza are partially functioning. 374 health workers killed, 120 ambulances completely destroyed. Hospitals was the last refuge for the displaced and injured, it was the first thing Israel bombed. Thank you for listening to the ‘Palestine Debrief’ podcast. Defaming Palestinian Activism: with Michael Bueckert

On October 16, 2023, the Canadian government appointed Deborah Lyons, former Ambassador of Canada to Israel (2016-2020), as the new Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism. The Special Envoy Lyon's office is a joint unit of both Canadian Heritage and Global Affairs Canada, bringing her role into the realm of international relations (whereas the Special Representative on Combating Islamophobia is singularly located in Canadian Heritage). Additionally, her mandate comes directly from the Prime Minister, and it involves promoting the controversial and anti-Palestinian International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance working definition of antisemitism (IHRA). It also includes the creation of an IHRA handbook, purportedly to help civil servants, politicians, and police departments to apply it to real-world situations. Critics have long warned that IHRA conflates legitimate criticism of Israel and Zionism with antisemitism. For that reason it has long been understood as a threat to the full exercise of Canadians' Charter Rights, as it targets political expression including criticism of Israeli policies and activism for Palestinian rights. CJPME argues that IHRA is an instrument intended to suppress Palestinian perspectives, as well as the discussion of topics such as apartheid. IHRA should therefore be understood as a form of state-sponsored anti-Palestinian racism. Thank you for listening to the ‘Palestine Debrief’ podcast. Canada's Policies Towards Israel After Oct. 7: with Dimitri Lascaris

A December article in Al Jazeera describes Canada’s foreign policy towards Israel and Palestine as “schizophrenic.” It’s like Canada supports Israel, wants to support Israel, but is also worried about supporting it too much because it will affect their false image of Canada as a “peace loving, refugee welcoming nation.” We talk about Canada’s policies towards Israel since the beginning of genocide with a person with a long list of credentials that include Activist, Journalist, Lawyer and a person who ran for the Green Party in 2020 Dimitri Lascaris. Ontario Keffiyeh Ban: Smokescreen, Racism or ? - with Chris Zabaneh

On April 17th 2024, the keffiyeh was banned from being worn by staff and guests in the Ontario legislature by speaker Ted Arnott. There had been no formal complaints nor was a motion presented to Ted Arnott for this ban, yet he acted on his own authority to impose the ban. This conversation with Chris Farris Zabaneh talks about the Keffiyeh Ban, how it came into place, the distraction tactic taken of imposing the ban, the supremacist approach of limiting non-white cultural attire and what can be strategically done to reverse the ban. The Nakba Bill: with NDP MP Matthew Green

In December of last year NDP MP Matthew Green took the lead in sponsoring a Private Member’s bill, informally named “the Nakba Bill.” While the text of Green’s bill has not been made public, Green has made clear that his bill will call for Canada to formally acknowledge the Nakba and its tragic consequences for the Palestinian people. We talk private member bills, the Nakba, Parliament's Palestine motion, Canada's culpability, the IOF, the chances of Green's bill passing, and sleeping better at night.  It is worth noting that past Nakba bills introduced around the world failed to pass, including those by Rashida Tlaib in the US, and Layla Moran both in the UK, both of whom are Palestians.
