Artificial intelligence is rapidly shaping economic transformation, competitiveness, public services, and the future of work. At the same time, it raises important questions about trust, skills, inclusion, data protection, and the role of governments in guiding technological change. In this episode, Scott Bradley, Vice-President of Government Relations at OpenText, discusses how countries in the Americas and the Caribbean can participate meaningfully in emerging innovation while addressing the broader impacts of AI on societies and labour markets. In a context of rapid change and global uncertainty, countries in the Americas and the Caribbean are looking for ways to strengthen innovation, competitiveness, and long-term economic opportunity. Transnational organized crime increasingly operates through economic, financial, commercial, and logistical systems that are also used by legitimate markets. This creates complex challenges for governments, parliaments, law enforcement agencies, regulators, customs authorities, financial intelligence units, and international partners. In this episode, Michael Bejos, Officer in Charge of the Department against Transnational Organized Crime of the OAS Secretariat for Multidimensional Security, explains how illicit economies distort markets, weaken institutions, undermine legitimate businesses, and exploit differences in regulation, enforcement, transparency, and international cooperation. His intervention highlights the importance of addressing organized crime as a hybrid economic model that combines violence, corruption, logistics, financial sophistication, and market infiltration. He also discusses the need for risk-based regulation, financial inclusion, beneficial ownership transparency, asset recovery, trade-based money laundering controls, public procurement integrity, data sharing, and stronger cross-border investigative mechanisms. The blue economy has emerged as a key pillar of sustainable development for many Caribbean countries, offering opportunities to promote economic growth, strengthen trade, create jobs, and enhance climate resilience. Realizing this potential, however, requires governance frameworks that balance economic development with environmental sustainability and the long-term stewardship of marine resources.
