Passages

Passages is about faith, friendship, snacks, and the funny things that happen in between. Drew, Jason, Patrick, and Tim explore scripture, share great quotes, and debate everything from tacos to Bigfoot to bad preachers. If you enjoy conversations that can effortlessly leap from questionable restaurant straws to serious Bible wisdom, you've come to the right podcast.

  1. 120

    War Eagle and Wade Forester

We're joined by two returning guests tonight, it's America's birthday, someone got engaged at the top (no, for real, the very top) of the Empire State Building, and we get the low down on a hate triangle in college football. Also, the French hate our AC, and a medical miracle occurred in 1983. And, our passage, the poem "How Alive" by Wade Forester.

  2. 119

The Toilet Roomba and Aldous Huxley

In this week's episode, the guys remember Tim, Drew has a book sale, some baby giraffes are rescued, and Nathan gets pranked. Also, the guys discover a very special toilet, some really cool racing, and our passage from Aldous Huxley: “It’s dark because you are trying too hard. Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly. Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply. Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them.”

  3. 118

Nathan Gets into a Fight and Charles Bukowski

The boys are back! Well, most of us! This week, Patrick talks (a lot) about his trip to Italy, we take a look at some Elvis impersonators, Nathan gets into a fight, and a viral TikTok Challenge ends in a chemical burn. And, our passage from Charles Bukowski, "And when nobody wakes you up in the morning, and when nobody waits for you at night, and when you can do whatever you want, what do you call it, freedom or loneliness?"

  4. 117

That One Guy from the Guardian and CS Lewis

The JV team is back this week with some reserves! The guys discuss Lego drama, movie ratings, some Star Wars and reality TV drama, and Jackson is back with another tiered ranking of which Star Wars characters he could take in a lightsaber battle. There's also a Bad Preacher (singer?) and our passage from CS Lewis: "Remember, he is not, like you, a pure spirit. Never having been a human (Oh that abominable advantage of the Enemy's) you don't realize how enslaved they are to the pressure of the ordinary."

  5. 116

Junior Varsity and... Well, Just Watch

This week on Passages, the boys... well, the boys' boys... the Junior Varsity Passages Crew, dig into some stuff. A black bear breaks into a school, the guys ask what would make you leave a concert, a horse gets stabbed, and Jackson brings his (according to Patrick) very disrespectful food tier. I just can't in good conscience say the Passages Podcast supports anything Jackson says about food in this episode. Just cannot. Also, the guys shake up the passages portion of this episode and add a Bad Preacher at the end, so it's probably best to just dive in!

  6. 115

Less Than Zero and Billy Joel

This week, we have more “fan” mail, a roaming reporter story, Jason has a list of weird federal laws, Tim breaks down the American Music Awards, Drew discusses the music acts invited to America’s 250th Birthday Celebration, and Patrick has the details on the recent Steroid Olympics. Also, an audition, and our passage from Billy Joel: “He says, Son, can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes, But it's sad, and it's sweet, and I knew it complete, When I wore a younger man's clothes…”

  7. 114

Someone Got Caught Recruiting and JJ Grey

Settle in dearest Passengers, this is our longest episode yet. This week we have some special musical surprises, a story about being trapped inside your own mind, football recruiting scandals, a memorial to the restaurant on cemetery hill, and some weird medical diagnoses. Later, the guys discuss some fan (hate?) mail and our passage from JJ Grey: "All those simple thoughts all those peaceful dreams, Share the space with a hard worked, hard worked day, But it's the little things, the little things not expectation, That make life worth living, worth living..."

  8. 113

And, as always, our passage from Herman Melville: "An utterly fearless man is a far more dangerous comrade than a coward."(Fun fact: the word "comrade" is grammatically weird because it's from the French word "camarade," which was derived from the Spanish word "camarada," meaning "chamber mate." But, let's be real here... it doesn't need the E in 21st Century English.)

  12. 109

The Archangel Voltron and Fyodor Dostoevsky

The guys have a substitute-Drew this week, Jason gets superstitous, we learn April 15s of the past aren't the happiest of days, and do a deep dive on Trump's new painting. And, of course, our passage from Fyodor Dostoevsky: "Above all, don't lie to yourself. And, our passage for this week from James Clear: “It doesn’t make sense to continue wanting something if you’re not willing to do what it takes to get it. If you don’t want to live the lifestyle, then release yourself from the desire. To crave the result but not the process is to guarantee disappointment.”

And, of course, our passage from Robert Duvall: "Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things that a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good. That honor, courage, and virtues mean everything. That power and money, money and power, mean nothing. That Good always triumphs over Evil. And I want you to remember this: That Love, true Love, never dies. Doesn’t matter if any of this is true or not. You see, a man should believe in these things because these are the things worth believing in."Secondhand Lions, written and directed by Tim McCanlies, New Line Cinema

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
