We can see the impact of ignoring expert advice right now

Who would have predicted yet another headline showing the Coalition going out of their way to ignore experts about how we are making climate change worse?Well anyone who has read the news in the last 3 years probably, or still trying to dry out their carpets from one of the dozen severe weather impacts we’ve had this year.Real, independent political commentary requires a strong community behind it.First up, make sure you're equipped for the voting booth: visit www.election2026.co.nz for practical tools and resources to help you choose who to vote for.To stay across all my content—including the award-winning podcast and weekly newsletter—make sure you follow the main hub: https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzWant to help drive the conversation? The "tough on crime" grifts National voters are keen to fall for

Being “tough on crime” is a bullshit line conservative politicians like to use because it’s a catchy soundbite that keeps people scared - but the reality is National in particular is lying to you about how tough on crime they actually are in three very distinct ways - misrepresenting data, using their position to steal policies with bipartisan support and pressuring media to make them look good.  And you need to know this so you don’t fall for it.Looking for clear, independent election insights? 🗳️ Check out www.election2026.co.nz for tools to help you decide your vote.Catch the award-winning podcast, weekly newsletter, and more here: https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzThis work is entirely listener-funded. Policy Audit: The MediCard

Labour has built a suite of policies around a proposed Medicard that would see free Doctor visits, prescriptions, maternity scans and cervical scans, supported by plans to make it easier for GPs to start their own practice or buy into others and new funding models. This Week's The News: 17 July 2026

In this week’s This Week’s The News, former Act Party President finally admits guilt to past sexual assaults on minors while pleading guilty on a third case before courts that may have happened sooner but Act successfully used name suppression laws to protect themselves from public scrutiny for 2 years. Oh and they had a new candidate announced or something. And some other news that would have been drowned out this week while Act tries to distract you from their connections to a three times convicted admitted sexual predator.*This content piece was originally released as a video and can still be found in that format on multipl platforms but if you're listening to this as an audio only podcast, be aware the visual gags don't really work.Real, independent political commentary requires a strong community behind it.First up, make sure you're equipped for the voting booth: visit www.election2026.co.nz for practical tools and resources to help you choose who to vote for.To stay across all my content—including the award-winning podcast and weekly newsletter—make sure you follow the main hub: https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzWant to help drive the conversation? The 5 ways it's more difficult for you to vote in 2026

The Human Rights Commission, Amnesty international, the United Nations and the Electoral Commission have all called out the government for making it harder to vote than ever before this year - in changes that breach human rights laws, could stop half a million people voting, and disproportionately impact Maori, Pacifica, low income, transient and older voters.  So here’s the five ways they have done this.Looking for clear, independent election insights? 🗳️ Check out www.election2026.co.nz for tools to help you decide your vote.Catch the award-winning podcast, weekly newsletter, and more here: https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzThis work is entirely listener-funded. The Dead Cat Theory in ACTion

We Have To Keep Fighting Dinosaurs for Sam Neill

The world has changed so radically, and we’re all running to catch up. Sam Neill was a legend, someone who seemingly lived up to the hype as a genuinely nice person who made everyone he met feel seen. And as we mourn his unexpected passing, we know he was still fighting dinosaurs till the very end - including the ones that do hunt in coordinated patterns like velociraptors (NZ First voters) and the best way we can honour his memory going forward is to protect the land he loved and fight the dinosaurs from taking over.Real, independent political commentary requires a strong community behind it.First up, make sure you're equipped for the voting booth: visit www.election2026.co.nz for practical tools and resources to help you choose who to vote for.To stay across all my content—including the award-winning podcast and weekly newsletter—make sure you follow the main hub: https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzWant to help drive the conversation? I don't trust a party that hid a pedophile to get elected when they say they know how to be tough on crime

Act, a party with a long history of defining crime as something only the poor do and totally not what their former party president did, wants to “get tough” on burglary by doing what right wing parties always get wrong about what leads to crime and breaching human rights to send a message that won’t be heard because it’s based on a lie.Real, independent political commentary requires a strong community behind it.First up, make sure you're equipped for the voting booth: visit www.election2026.co.nz for practical tools and resources to help you choose who to vote for.To stay across all my content—including the award-winning podcast and weekly newsletter—make sure you follow the main hub: https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzWant to help drive the conversation? One thing the right wing parties do really well are make noises that sound good about free speech and equal for all, but actually strip back those right so only the noise they agree with gets heard - and Act’s latest policy is exactly what this is - demanding a neutrality that can’t exist because some awful people got upset for being called out for their attitudes. Check out www.election2026.co.nz for resources and tools to help you decide on who to vote for.Why not check out some of my other content - there’s an award winning podcast, a weekly newsletter and more - https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzAnd if you want to support what I do with a donation, you can do that through this link - https://buymeacoffee.com/paul.theotheroneAll your support is really appreciated, especially as we push for a change of government in 2026!©️ Paul… The Other One, 2026

Tough Weekend for the Right Wing Political Leaders of the country

Modern right wing conservative political figures are under a lot of stress - on one hand people expect them to slash and burn public services to run a country like the record number of businesses going into liquidation and tell everyone trickle down downward pressure would fix it, while trying to make sure the dg whistles and culture war topics are heard loud and clear by those listening really hard for them. The problem, it takes longer to debunk than it does to lie and that has real world consequences for our country in very profound ways.

Cheaper Public Transport - Labour's latest election policy

It says a lot about the Coalition that Transport Minister Simeon Brown’s response to Labours proposed public transport cap is that we shouldn’t have our tax money spent on making our lives better. From the Coalition of “tax cuts for landlords and tobacco companies”, that isn’t a shock, but it shows the strength of the policy proposal.

    Something Sure Does Smell Funny....

What’s that term for when the public sees you abusing entrusted power or resources for private gain for yourself or others?  I’m sure there’s a term, and a reason why people are using that term to describe the Coalition.Check out www.election2026.co.nz for resources and tools to help you decide on who to vote for.Why not check out some of my other content - there’s an award winning podcast, a weekly newsletter and more - https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzAnd if you want to support what I do with a donation, you can do that through this link - https://buymeacoffee.com/paul.theotheroneAll your support is really appreciated, especially as we push for a change of government in 2026!©️ Paul… The Other One, 2026

The Time The Coalition Stole From An Atlas Organisation And Screwed Them (and councils) Over

During the 2023 Election, Luxon and his team were big on talking up Localism for local government. After 3 years it’s clear they didn’t believe in it at all, as we see them stepping in again to place racists and remove locals from the local government process.Check out www.election2026.co.nz for resources and tools to help you decide on who to vote for.Why not check out some of my other content - there’s an award winning podcast, a weekly newsletter and more - https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzAnd if you want to support what I do with a donation, you can do that through this link - https://buymeacoffee.com/paul.theotheroneAll your support is really appreciated, especially as we push for a change of government in 2026!©️ Paul… The Other One, 2026

    Spotting Election Propaganda

When the Kings Birthday Honours List includes someone so clearly partisan, bias and destructive but in support of the current regime, it looks like rewarding awful behaviour - but it’s also one of the ways authoritarian Governments use propaganda to campaign. So I figured we’d take a look at some other ways as well.Check out www.election2026.co.nz for resources and tools to help you decide on who to vote for.Why not check out some of my other content - there’s an award winning podcast, a weekly newsletter and more - https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzAnd if you want to support what I do with a donation, you can do that through this link - https://buymeacoffee.com/paul.theotheroneAll your support is really appreciated, especially as we push for a change of government in 2026!©️ Paul… The Other One, 2026

The RNZ Paradox - Public Interest or What the Public is Interested In

There is a big difference between Public Interest and what the public is interested in, and as a state broadcaster with a charter remit that says “reach as many people as possible, the two can be mixed, confused and used to mislead - and that’s not great going into an election where we know some politicians are clearly corrupt, and algorithms are pushing their perspectives.

Nerd Out With: Matt Brachi - Port Waikato, Labour

Matt Brachi, Labour’s Port Waikato Candidate is a lover of 80s pop culture, a Warhammer Cosplayer, a STEM teacher and running in an electorate where the current outgoing MP got drunk and yelled at workers, a local list MP worked for a race baiting right wing lobby group and oversaw the reintroduction of pro-smoking laws, and this year he’ll be up against the head of the oxymoronically titled Bluegreens (Nationals working group for Environmental policies) and an anti semitic admin of conspiracy theory groups who considers David Seymour left leaning. In this episode of Nerd Out With, I catch up with Matt to talk Ghostbusters, Warhammer and classic Pop Culture’s influence on students of today.Check out www.election2026.co.nz for resources and tools to help you decide on who to vote for.Why not check out some of my other content - there’s an award winning podcast, a weekly newsletter and more - https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzAnd if you want to support what I do with a donation, you can do that through this link - https://buymeacoffee.com/paul.theotheroneAll your support is really appreciated, especially as we push for a change of government in 2026!©️ Paul… The Other One, 2026

Deep Breath - It's Budget Day

It’s Budget Day - and seeing as this is the Coalition that puts the N in Cuts, and their pre-budget announcements have already said they’re going to make life tougher for tens of thousands of people, while in the midst of a swirling vortex of scandals they hope the budget will wash away from front pages and news feeds - I have suitably low hopes for any announcements of value.Check out www.election2026.co.nz for resources and tools to help you decide on who to vote for.Why not check out some of my other content - there’s an award winning podcast, a weekly newsletter and more - https://linktr.ee/paul_barlownzAnd if you want to support what I do with a donation, you can do that through this link - https://buymeacoffee.com/paul.theotheroneAll your support is really appreciated, especially as we push for a change of government in 2026!©️ Paul… The Other One, 2026
