One of my favorite eras for drum n' bass was the early jump-up sound in the mid-90's. Rugged breaks, wobbly basslines, rugged hip-hop samples - this was a truly banging style of rave music that still sounds incredible today. I'm back in Edinburgh this weekend to celebrate my dear friends Andy & Lizzie's 25th anniversary, and to celebrate I've put together this mix to look back at Rampage, the Edinburgh club might where I first met them. Rampage was a great if not spectacularly successful club night that I co-promoted in the early 2000's with my flatmate Rob Dinsdale and the dj Phil Zero, with Aberdeen's DJ Skelp as the other resident dj alongside Phil and I. We met Andy and Lizzie at the very first party, when they joined us at our Dalkeith Road flat for the afterparty ... many years later, that friendship is still strong! When my friend Vali from @parallaxrecordings asked if I wanted to drop another Yaman Productions tribute mix for @peoples-station I was all over the idea! Last time around I did a tribute to the 1993 crop of mixes, pulling together tracks from that year's selection of mixtapes. This year I'm kicking off a new mix series to celebrate the first 25 years of this century: 21st Century Music! Each mix will contain only music from this century. To kick things off, here's a mix of proper techno music from the beginning of the century. This is very personal for me, as this is a point at which I was really engaged with techno - listening to it, dancing to it, thinking about it, and playing it. This is the point when I was a student at Edinburgh University, and I was visiting the (sadly no longer with us) Studio 24 on Calton Road practically every weekend with friends to enjoy techno clubs like Dogma, Pillbox, Apex, Subtle Logic, and more. This was a time when techno was really fun and interesting, the time of 'hard grooves', of funky techno, of high impact, danceable music, before the walls of minimal closed in and techno got really, really boring for a while. There's been a revival of this style in recent years (see my Stranger tribute mix, for instance), which is not surprising, because this style of techno is just so much more fun than minimal. Enjoy! Run by Zebedee and Lawrence, Organgrinder never had the name recognition of labels like Stay Up Forever, Routemaster, or Smitten, but it played a vital role in the scene’s ecosystem. This is an old track that I made with my friend Jamie, aka K-Tech, in his home studio in Barnet, North London, in the summer of 2003. It was then lost for over 20 years until Jamie recently found it on an old external hard drive ... which was a big score! I was very excited to hear it again, because I've always had fond memories of it. It's fast-paced acid trance mayhem, just as the doctor ordered! K-Tech was a live hard trance / hard nrg project that performed at various London clubs in the period from around 2003 to 2006 - if there's enough interest, I can put together an EP of his solo productions and put them out. Happy hardcore is a funny one - a byword for the cheesiest dance music known to man, with the tackiest aesthetic. Whistles, white gloves, glowsticks. Saucer-shaped eyes, rictus grins, pumping fists. Hi-vis vests, cycling masks full of Vicks vapo-rub, tracksuits. As hardcore split into jungle and happy hardcore, and jungle went on to become drum n’ bass to critical plaudits, happy hardcore continued on its defiant path, not cool in the slightest and happier for that. For the final mix in my There & Back series, I've delved into the early days of happy hardcore to deliver a mix of massive tunes. After the multi-genre mash-up that was There & Back 010 I decided to get more specific for the 11th edition in 2024's crate-digging mix series; in this case to really dig into and explore DJ Zinc's brief but really awesome run of producing breakbeat garage in the early 2000's. I've always loved the UK Funky sound - it's as if classic American funky house was kidnapped and taken to a South London council estate and fed on a strict diet of soca, African percussion, dubstep, grime, UK garage, and broken beat in order to produce something that was completely London and absolutely, compulsively danceable. Crate-digging is fun! This is a mix I've done, originally planned for, uh, February, where I've made a mix of UK techno (loosely defined), which covers all angles, which means that the mix starts off pretty stripped-down and minimal, then goes through some chunky modern acid house, then into some bass-heavy dub and jungle influenced techno that could only come from the UK, some more loopy hardgroove-style stuff, then steadily more banging and intense, right up to some classic London acid techno, modern industrial techno from Perc and, finally, my own extremely uncompromising track ‘Crossbones’!  Enjoy! For my final mix of 2023, here's a special present from me to you - my tribute to my favorite artist of the last decade ... @omunit! I recorded this mix in literally our last night in our old flat in Wilmersdorf before we moved out after ten years - it seemed like a nice bit of synchronicity to record this specific tribute as a final farewell to our home of so many years. Om Unit (aka Jim Coles to his mom) has been probably my favorite electronic music producer of the last ten years I love how he integrates his distinctively synth-heavy, melodic, bass-forward sound into all kinds of musical frameworks. He's done everything from 110 bpm (and slower) dub / downtempo beats to 140 bpm breaks and dubstep and then all the way up to 160 bpm footwork and 170 bpm jungle and drum n' bass. What's really cool about his work is that even though he works at different tempos and in quote-unquote different genres, his music always sounds like him. In this day and age, it's hard to find artists with a clear and distinctive sound, and he really has that. I love that he doesn't compromise his musical vision, that he bends the genres to his sound, instead of the other way around. This mix is focused more on his faster stuff, and I've tried hard to pay appropriate homage ... enjoy! If you've been following Sonicrampage for a long time, or even for a short time, you're probably aware that I love fast music! What I haven't typically done in my DJ career has been to make mixes that are more, shall we say, mellow. Let's change that! Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I've recently started to enjoy more downtempo sounds, and so here is this, the first actual proper downtempo / trip-hop mix I've ever recorded. Why did I call it a short window to chill? Well, basically because I actually had a very short window to make this mix. I think the best ever single grime tape pack / mix release was @rinsefm's amazing Rinsessions Vol. 1, which was released in 2005. A true landmark release, it featured six mixes from some of the scene's leading names, such as Roll Deep, Ruff Sqwad, Slimzee, Plasticman (now known as Plastician), and Logan Sama (plus a UK Garage mix from Jiggy B). Here's a mix that I'm really excited to share! This is a selection of modern jungle techno, all mixed on vinyl. The title is a reference to the fact that the brief flowering of jungle techno in the early 90's was a real missed opportunity, as this style of music is just basically awesome - chopped-up breakbeats layered over thumping 4/4 kickdrums, undergirded by punishing bass, and layered over with samples of all things 'dark' (horror movie strings, mentasm stabs, spooky dialogue, etc), and spiked with techno-esque stabs. It's great! So I've been really excited over recent years to see the revival of this sound, and so I've dug through my collection to put together this mix for you. Enjoy! For my final mix of 2021 I'm dropping something I've wanted to do for quite some time, and that I'm very excited to share with you ... my tribute to the amazing 90's output of the one and only @armandvanhelden! I know I generally don't do much house music stuff, but I've been a fan of his stuff for literally 25 years, so I thought the moment was right to put together a little something special. The mix is a selection of 30 of his tracks and remixes, organized in chronological order from 1993 to 1997 (OK, there are a few from '93 and '98, but the principle still holds), which allows you to really hear how his sound progressed over the course of just a few years. Given the man's unbelievably prolific output in those years you could do such a mix in so many ways, so it goes without saying that this is just my take - I've left a few of the most obvious anthems out (the Tori Amos and Sneaker Pimps remixes most obviously), but I think that I've included a lot of great tunes, some famous, others more obscure. One of my alltime favorite dj/producers is London's Jerome Hill (@jeromehill). Although best known for his off-kilter approach to techno, he is also an absolute don when it comes to old skool hardcore and classic hip-hop sounds. His stuff is great ... I'm just a sad fanboy tbh!
