What are the first steps to starting a side business? - EP 115

What does it really take to start a side business and use your existing skills to start making extra money? What are the 4 things you must have, and the 6 steps you should take to create something viable on the side? In this episode, I'll tell you, including a look at how it all began for me 44 years ago - when I was still a bed-wetter. :-)

  2. 114

The Purpose of Purpose - EP 114

How do you find the energy and commitment to stick with something long enough to have an impact? Goals and passion can give something to aim for, and the occasional boost of energy, but they can't sustain you forever. 'Purpose', though, will get you there.

    Matthew Kimberley - How to Get a F*cking Grip - EP 113

Matthew Kimberley is a sales training extraordinaire – sought by bigtime entrepreneurs, fortune-500s and those smart enough (and flush enough) to seek his counsel. He's taught French to rich kids in Kuala Lumpur, served Whisky in Brussels and given English lessons through the magic of theatre, in Italy. In 2007, he threw on his big boy pants to found a tech recruitment company in Belgium (which he grew to millions in revenue), before taking on the top job at the Book Yourself Solid School of Coach Training. He later went on to create The School for Selling, and he is the cunning brains behind The Single Malt Mastermind and The Principles of Professional Persuasion.Today, from his Bond-style lair on the sunny island of Malta (where, apparently, everyone is naked), he works with companies from around the world to help them achieve remarkably better results. Indeed, Glamour Magazine described him as the “tough-love business guru”. His latest book, Get a F*cking Grip is the last self-help book you'll ever need. Today, we discuss why. Learn more.

How to make extra money at home as a remote worker - 112

The daily commute is no more. In its place, a delightful vacuum of available hours to indulge long-suppressed curiosities, desires, and human needs. This pandemic that’s torn across our planet has done incalculable damage, but it’s also produced something no one had before – free time. How should you use this time? Can you use it to make some extra money on the side? My answers are ‘boldly’, and ‘hell, yes!’ In this episode, I break down how you can start earning extra cash on the side, which platforms and mediums to consider, and the four principles of building a side hustle. Take notes.

Mary Rogers on midlife, failure, and changing your mind. EP 111

Listen in as I chat with one of the smartest and nicest midlifers I’ve ever met, in the longest podcast interview I've ever conducted - a whopping 2 hrs & 32 minutes! Mary's actually responsible for the most enjoyable podcast I’ve ever done - not as the host, but as a guest on her show, the Experience 50 Podcast For Midlife, in November 2019. As she said back then, we’re kindred spirits - like a brother and sister who've never hugged. Think of us as a pair of expert midlifers who've come over for a few drinks as we riff about apologizers, failure, and the value of changing your mind, plus a bit of Tim Ferriss thrown in for good measure.

WFH was only the 1st phase of my new life - 110

I know I’m just a Quark on a dot in the inky blackness of space, but I’m getting better at living on purpose. Here's how I've created my new life, detailing the five phases that brought me here.

How to Find Meaning in your Life - 109

Ten years ago, I went through a midlife crisis. I didn't buy a Harley or get a tattoo on my neck, but I did start a blog - midlifetribe.com.  I knew my depression was rooted in a deep desire for meaning. It emanated from the question, "Why exactly am I doing this?" Once I found it (meaning), many of my troubles evaporated or become, paradoxically, meaningless. But meaning isn’t easy to acquire – at least not directly. Like happiness, it’s actually a byproduct of something else. That's what I cover in this week's episode.

    Michael Yardney - Methods, Mindset & Masterstrokes of a 40-Yr Investor. 108

Michael Yardney is a property investment icon in Australia, with more than 40 years of experience through multiple economic cycles. A best-selling author, educator and wealth advisor, Michael's clear-thinking, consistent insights are sought by experienced and emerging investors alike. In this episode, we talk about the key principles every investor must know and the traps to avoid. More importantly, though, we discuss the early days when he craved wealth for all the wrong reasons, right through to the lessons that made all the difference - allowing him to help thousands of people while living a rich and fulfilling life.

It's not too late to change your life - 5 reasons. 107

Just because you’re 45 or 65 doesn’t mean your ship has sailed. If anything, it’s been waiting for you to board. Your job is to swim out to it, hoist yourself aboard and set a course for the life you want.Being 45 or 65 or even 85 does not mean your ship has sailed. It's still there, waiting for you to board. Your job is to swim out to it, hoist yourself aboard and set a course for the life you want. It needn't be an 'epic' journey, it need only be yours.Changing your life and becoming who you really are is easier than it's ever been. So get busy, the world is waiting for you.

  10. 106

The job promotion you actually wanted all along - 106

For many, working from home for the first time has been a liberating experience. Like me, they can enjoy breakfast with their kids, they can work in comfortable clothes, and they're getting more done with fewer distractions.Perhaps you now find yourself with extra time on your hands. Maybe your stress levels have dropped, and you’re wondering how to keep this newfound autonomy once COVID-19 is under control. You might have discovered that this new way of working (and living) is what a job promotion is supposed to be – a LIFE upgrade. After all, that’s why we strive for them, right?

The best way to do remote podcast interviews! SquadCast founder, Zach, explains. 105

It seems everyone's starting a podcast these days, but as they soon discover, doing remote interviews is difficult, hampered by poor quality audio, latency, drop-outs and difficulty engaging with guests. In March this year, I discovered SquadCast, and overnight, it solved EVERYTHING. In fact, it's so good, I decided my solo show would actively welcome guests again. Now after five interviews conducted over SquadCast, I reached out to the co-founder, Zach Moreno, and asked if he'd share his story - not just on the development of their remote studio-quality podcasting platform, but his journey as an artist, engineer and co-founder of a tech startup. If you've ever wanted to scratch a creative itch, if you've wondered why no one's solved a problem that begs to be solved, Zach's story makes for compelling listening. And if you're a podcaster or aspiring podcaster, you'll be really glad you tuned into this episode.

Turn your Mess into your Message - Genecia Alluora, Soul Rich Woman - 102

I was thoroughly delighted the other day when I got the chance to chat with the gorgeous human dynamo that is Genecia Alluora. A previous Miss Singapore, co-founder of a successful cafe chain that later sold to a publicly listed company, and more recently, the creator of a hugely successful women’s only business community, Genecia Alluora is a whirlwind of sapphire blue energy. Her community at soulrichwoman.com, with 200,000 members, teaches female entrepreneurs to ‘own and love the f-word’: being Fabulous, earning Freedom, gaining Financial Independence, and valuing Family.

Why voice messaging beats Slack & Zoom - with Yac CEO, Justin Mitchell - 101

The way businesses use Slack & Zoom is failing remote workers, destroying their #1 advantage - the ability to engage in deep work, free of distractions. Asynchronous voice messaging like Yac lets people do more in less time, with context, and today, we chat with its CEO, Justin Mitchell.

  17. 99

How a pandemic is crushing old beliefs and our fears of a better life - 099

The Coronavirus is making everyone sit up and re-evaluate what they can do remotely, but when a cure is delivered, the old reasons will remain. Working remotely just makes everyone's life better.

  18. 98

Working from home might save your life 098

The spread of the coronavirus lends a new perspective to the benefits of remote work, but working from home can save your life in many other ways.

  19. 97

How working from home helped me connect with my kids - 097

If I'd have remained in a traditional corporate setting, I would not have connected with my kids the way I have. I'd have been like every other absent dad out there - always compensating for my lack of presence with trinkets and an all-too-brief annual holiday. Today, you can build a career around your life and still enjoy all the money and status you think you need. Your career and your relationship with your kids needn't be mutually exclusive anymore.

  20. 96

If you're unhappy don't quit your job. Change location. - 096

Most of us are stressed about work. You don’t need to quit your job to be happy, though. You might only need to change how and where you do it.

  21. 95

Remote worker Jason Lengstorf - The Cult of Work you Never Meant to Join 095

If you work more than 40 hrs a week, sleep less than 6 hrs a night and feel guilty when you're away from work, you might have joined The Cult of Work.

  22. 94

Becoming the ultimate parent - 094

I've had a bit of practice being a parent - almost 18 years, in fact. Plus, I've been a kid myself for about 50 years, so I think I can speak with authority on parenthood. Thanks to the example set by my folks and a reluctance to grow up, I've been able to distil this wisdom into three simple rules, plus a shortcut.

  23. 93

10-year-old you is trying to tell you something 093

The older I get, the more I realise 10-year-old me knew what was best for me – at least fundamentally. In many ways, he was wiser, simpler, and happier.

  24. 92

    I need a kick up the ass - 092

Postponing something that’ll be good for you in a year’s time is easy to do, but we all know how fast a year goes. Sometimes we just need a kick up the ass.

  25. 91

Cut the crap from your life and start living - 091

Finding your purpose and the work to go along with it can take years, or just a moment. The trouble is the daily crap we deal with blinds us most of the time. It’s this crap I want to help you hose away, because underneath it all, the path you seek awaits. Today, share some of the common culprits that consume our time and therefore, our lives – plus some practical tips to wash them away (or at least, minimise the stench).

  26. 90

Remote workers are good for business 090

The statistics are in & the proof is irrefutable; enabling remote workers is a game-changer for business, with positive impacts that are real & measurable.

  27. 89

Create a business from what you already know 089

Social media and in-your-face advertising will have you believe that building an online business is quick and easy – especially if you buy whatever they’re selling – but it’s neither. It takes time, patience, and a willingness to learn, screw up, and learn some more. The best part, though, is you get to pursue something that’s more than a business. You get to do something you actually care about.

  28. 88

Your values – the BS versus the truth 088

Like a lot of you, some of my big ‘life’ questions resurface towards the end of every year. Mine appear on my morning walk or when I’m out for a drive. Lately, there have been two questions vying for attention. In seeking to answer them, though, I noticed that both are something of a trap, eliciting reflex responses instead of truthful ones. The questions are: 1. What do I value? 2. Who am I living for? They’re simple little questions; less than five words each, yet the answers can have a profound effect on our lives. If we’re not asking them and then thinking deliberately about the answers, life will hand us a bunch of crappy ones.

  29. 87

How to convince your boss to let you work remotely - 087

For many of us, working remotely - from home, an RV while travelling or a lakeside cabin - is the ultimate dream, but we're scared to ask our boss for permission to do it. In this week's episode, we discuss five steps to convince your boss to let you work remotely.

  30. 86

Why copying your heroes doesn't work 086

There is only one ‘right way’ to create the life you want, and that’s your way – a path signposted by the beliefs, habits, ideals and dreams that sit well with you. Just you. We are all unique – with different priorities, different circumstances, different values and different ideals. Our successes will be different from other peoples’ successes because we’re different. That’s why copying your heroes usually won’t work. There are just too many other variables.

  31. 85

Why Employers Should Embrace Remote Work and Flextime - 085

Employers need to embrace flextime, telecommuting and remote workers. Otherwise, they'll find themselves competing with millennial-owned companies that do. All that's needed is an understanding of the needs of both parties, and an agreement that helps both get what they want.

  32. 84

Your version of success is perfect 084

You don't have to kill yourself to be successful. You don't have to look, think or behave like anyone else. Your version of success is perfect - for you.

  33. 83

It’s easier being told what to do - 083

Being told what to do is easier, but that's not what you want. You want to be a kid again - creating, failing and triumphing. You want to explore life on your terms.

  34. 82

Stop Commuting and Start Chasing your Dreams 082

Time and energy are two of the most valuable and limited resources you have. Commuting kills both of them. When you stop commuting, you can finally start chasing your dreams.

  35. 81

3 Habits Every Remote Worker Should Have - 81

If you work from home or another remote location, you know what a huge blessing it is. For me, few things are more valuable than my time, and the decision to work from home has added years to my life. Literally, years. The truth is, most of us waste hours every day; acting as though we have an endless supply of them. So, if you’re one of those who do (or can, but haven’t crossed over, yet), here are my top three habits that make working remotely more productive and enjoyable.

  36. 80

When you wake up feeling like crap - 080

When you wake up feeling like crap, there's no shortage of suitable culprits. Your job, finances, spouse, or boss. But what if it's none of those?

  37. 79

The Meaning of Life – 9 Ideas on Meaning & Purpose - 079

Whether you’re a 16-year-old girl, a 39-year-old executive or a 62-year-old divorcee who’s fighting with the bottle, this is probably your most persistent question: What is the meaning of life?  Like me, you’ve no doubt asked it at various low-points in your life, but your subconscious is asking it every hour of every day. With each decision, each interaction, every little fork in the road, it’s looking for its purpose. A point to it all. Meaning.

  38. 78

The life you want is two decisions & two actions away. - 78

The life you want comes down to two decisions and two actions. You can argue that it's thousands of decisions and actions, but it's not. It's two of each.

  39. 77

Work from home but keep your day job - 077

If you can work from home but keep your day job, you get the best of both worlds - certainty with enough flexibility to live a bit more. A win-win.

  40. 76

    A 25 Year Old’s Dream Versus Today’s Reality - 076

In my early twenties, I did what millions of others did - I succumbed to the lure of easy money with an MLM company. Sadly, my dream of Mai Tais on a beach seven days a week died when I realised it wasn't nearly as easy as they made out.  Fast-forward a few years, and the company went broke - so it was never gonna happen, anyway. Ironically, I still managed to fulfil the most compelling dream sold by MLM companies - without joining one.

  41. 75

Why it’s Pointless Comparing Yourself to Others - 075

Comparing yourself to others, especially when the variables are so complex and therefore impossible to replicate, only creates stress, anxiety and disruption to your own journey.

  42. 74

5 Rules for Working from a Home Office - 074

Sick of leaving home each day for a place you don't like, to do work you don't enjoy? What if you could work from a home office? Here are 5 important rules.

  43. 73

6 Steps to Working and Living on Your Terms - 073

Learn how to get from stressed-out, commute-hating, office-bound, corporate slave...to human again. Here are 6 steps to working and living on your terms.

  44. 72

The Top 5 Reasons You Need a Side Hustle - 072

There are plenty of reasons to develop a side-hustle, and only one of them is about money. This week I share another four that are just as important - one of them even more so. We're living in an amazing time in history. The opportunities we face today are greater than ever before, and as I've said many times, we have it better than our parents ever did!. Learn why in this week's episode.

  45. 71

Finding the time and energy for a side hustle - 071

This episode covers five things I've done to increase my available time and my energy levels so that I can pursue a few side hustles and diversify my income. Finding the time & energy for a side hustle is hard when you work full-time. If you have a family or you commute long distances to work, it’s REALLY hard. For me, these practices made all the difference.

  46. 70

Worried about job security? Start freelancing. - 070

Businesses big and small are frequently dying or consolidating, meaning our jobs today are far from certain. Freelancing might be the answer you're looking for.

  47. 69

With these tools, you can work from almost anywhere. - 069

Thanks to the Internet, cloud-based software & easy access to knowledge, we really can work from almost anywhere. Here are the tools & practices to help you do it.

  48. 68

My Typical Day as a Remote Worker - 068

I value working from home more than money, prestige or a fancy job title. That’s because it’s given me something far more important – the freedom and control to live on my terms. But what kind of freedom am I talking about, and why is it so important to me? To explain, let me share a typical day with you. This one happened last autumn, and while it might seem exceptional, it happens like this more often than you’d suppose.

  49. 67

Earn the right to work from home - what it takes. 067

I once had a boss who was a dead ringer for Bill Lumberg from the movie, Office Space, except instead of the braces and tie, she wore a stiff grey power suit. I still remember the daily rounds where she'd sidle up to each desk with, "Whaaat's happening...?" I also remember the smell of synthetic carpet, chosen more for its longevity under heavy foot traffic than its calm-inducing properties. I remember the acronyms and corporate platitudes that filled our conversations; the gentle hum of fluorescent lighting, and the pale blue palette of cubicles and walls. It was a soul-sucking prison of annual budgets, sales tactics and mechanised behaviours, and after two years, I'd had a gut-full. That was a long time ago, and no amount of money would lure me back to that environment. That's because today I work where, when and how I want. I walk my son to school and pick him up each day. That alone is worth a few $100k to me. But how do you 'earn the right' to escape the office and work from home (or anywhere but the office)? I reckon there are three critical things you have to do, and that's what I cover this week.

  50. 66

How to nail what you want out of life - 066

Figuring out what you want out of life can be hard. I know - I worked at it for decades. But now that I have most of the things I want (many of which aren't actually 'things'), I can honestly say I got them because of what I share in this episode and in this post. Most of the best lessons in life are simple, and I promise you, this is one of them. It's all thanks to 30 years of mentoring, personal experience and failed experiments.
