Pieces of Faith

Faith. It looks different for all of us. We need a little of this and a little of that to make us who we are. This podcasts hosts authors, artists, non-profit leaders, and general do-gooders to help us put the pieces together.

Ep 09 Heather King: Holy Desperation

Heather King owes her well-being to prayer. After hitting the rock-hard bottom, she changed her life around - though not immediately.  She became a Catholic and adopted the discipline of prayer. She writes about her practice in Holy Desperation. We chatted about: what prayer means the different types of prayer why prayer is for us - not God how prayer leads to using "no" as a complete answer the one thing I can do to fully be aware of my spiritual potential (not sure that will be happening any time soon...at least not in this presidential term.) Heather speaks to those who don't know a lot about God - and maybe don't even believe. She's real, down to earth, and has a love you can feel through the airwaves. Check it out! Ep 08 Jennifer Grant When Did Everybody Else Get So Old?

I'm a 17 year old stuck in a 46 year old body. For real! Luckily, Jennifer Grant feels the same way I do and even though both of us HAVE 17 year olds, it doesn't change the fact that we are young and everyone around us is old. Ok - I may need a reality check. Tune in and listen to our conversation. In her book, When Did Everybody Else Get So Old, Jen gets real about midlife. In our conversation we discuss: Teens and why parents of teens are like flight attendants Perfect parents aren't that perfect. Being in our 40s is pretty rad. Things we miss about being younger Chin hair Yes, we cover it all. Grab a cup of coffee and see how much of this we all have in common. Also, Jen speaks to those not quite in their 40s...it does get better!

    Ep 7 Barbara Mahany

I do remember moments of mothering. Big moments. You know - births, first days of school, when they were old enough to stay home alone...things like this. Barbara Mahany remembers the big moments and lucky for us, recorded the small moments. Barbara artistically weaves these memories into a nest of her own snippets, sharing her observations with readers who will smile in remembrance of our own small recollections. Don't let the title fool you. Motherprayer: Lessons in Loving isn't just for women who have birthed offspring. It's a book for those who have cared for others; men, women, parents and those who have loved on other people's children.   Enjoy Barbara's explanation of her words and hear her voice as she reads my favorite of the essays, Worm Rescue.

Ep 06 Dave Schmelzer: Blue Ocean Faith

Something happened to me after I read Blue Ocean Faith. An inner peace I haven't experienced in a long time washed over me. Instead of anxiety wondering what is right and wrong about the Bible, instead of anger when "Christians" don't act Christ-like, instead of tension when discussing interpretations of Scripture...I felt "Solus Jesus". Dave Schmelzer talks with me about the Blue Ocean Church movement and what can happen when places of worship accept people for who they are. Straight or Gay, Republican or Democrat, Man or Woman; the focus is not who/what/where/when/how, the focus is Jesus.

  5. 48

Ep 5 Jason Stellman Misfit Faith

Jason Stellman is drunk. Probably. Maybe. I mean, he does label himself AND his podcast as such. He used to be in ministry. Therefore, he's a drunk ex-pastor.  Jason's book, Misfit Faith, is a collection of thoughts about God. Not the "Evangelical" God or the "Catholic" God or the "Protestant" God; just God who loves us. All of us.  Jason and I talk about Rich Mullins, 80s sitcoms, xenophobia, and the Bible. Listen to our conversation, then pick up the book. It's a perfect read for those who know God isn't a courtroom judge, but a father who invites you into his living room. (You'll understand after you listen.)

  6. 47

    Ep 04 Christine Marchetta

Christine Marchetta can help you communicate with loved ones who have passed from this life. And she may make you laugh while doing it. I have to admit, I don't know a lot about the Medium profession, contacting those who have died or "spirit guides". After chatting with Christine, my mind has opened to the possibilities. Listen to the conversation and hear us chat about: life and death God her parents her sister and my friend, Catherine taking time to slow down and notice what is happening around us If you want to know more about Christine or have questions, you can find her on her Facebook page or check out her website at ChristineMarchetta.com

Ep 03: Maggie Rowe Sin Bravely

Maggie Rowe was going to hell. At least that's what she told herself. From a young age, Maggie couldn't tell if she loved God enough to save her soul.  Publisher's Weekly endorsed, "Rowe's fantastic book is a born-again version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." You need no more explanation from me. Listen to Maggie comically share about her time in a Christian rehab center; a place where some of the therapists were determined to change the person you were born to be. Then pick up her book and read in detail what caused Maggie to Sin Bravely.

  8. 45

Ep 02 Greg Garrett - Crossing Myself

Reading a book about depression and mental illness isn't a first choice for someone who suffers from depression herself. Crossing Myself: A Story of Spiritual Rebirth isn't about darkness, but rather the light of what Greg Garrett sees in community, history, music, and service.  Greg's voice throughout his story will make you think, will make you laugh, and maybe even reach out to someone to say, "I love you."  Greg and I chatted for a bit about depression and suicidal thoughts, but also: The Matrix The Black Panther and Thor Martin Luther King, Jr. Who gets "space at the table" U2 Zombies So, basically your everyday conversation about Christian living. Enjoy the episode - then check out Greg's author page, pick up Crossing Myself, and pre-order his book about the living dead (you know you want to.)

    Ep 1: A New Hope

Yes. I know. This would have been much more rad if it were "Episode 4". It's not. However, I do have "a new hope" for the latest direction of this podcast. I hope you like it and are ready to expand your boundaries.  Life is different for me than it was a few months ago. I need my podcast to reflect that. Welcome to "Pieces of Faith."

SC 42 End of Stumptown Christian, Beginning of...

How lucky am I to have been given the opportunity to host a radio talk show? One of the greatest experiences of my life, I was proud to take my listeners with me via podcast when I left the noontime airwaves last year.  Stumptown Christian was my follow up to Rose City Forum. But now, the show with a Portland, OR focus is turning into so much more.  While the name of the podcast changes, the promise to introduce you to inspirational, motivational, celebrational, muppet-ational,  guests remains the same.  In January, I'll come back to you with a bigger focus on "Faith"; whether your faith is religious, spiritual, internal, or all of the above. Instead of a focus solely on Portland, I'll expand the show's boundaries to find people serving all over the country.  Thank you for your support and care in the past and I pray, the future. The community I've met through interviews has enriched my life. I hope yours has benefited as well. Merry Christmas to all and more than ever, I pray: Peace on Earth.

SC 41 Katherine Willis Pershey Very Married

Rev. Katherine Willis Pershey and I talked about sex. Sure, we talked about other things, but when one writes a book called, Very Married: Field Notes on Love & Fidelity, sex is going to be part of the conversation. In fact, it was most of the conversation.  Katherine and I talked about: Premarital sex Healthy marital sex Infatuation with other people (even when the object of infatuation is married to another) Divorce Marriage as social justice After all was said and done, one thing was certain: Katherine is very (happily) married. Listen to our conversation and read a real love story: Very Married. Links discussed on the show Very Married: Field Notes on Love & Fidelity Any Day a Beautiful Change

SC 40 Suzanne Stabile The Road Back To You

Suzanne Stabile's co-author, Ian Cron, describes her as a "ninja level, Mr. Miagi from the Karate Kid, kind of teacher." I feel like Daniel-son. The Enneagram has fascinated me for the last year, but talking to Suzanne after reading her book, The Road Back To You: An Enneagram Journey To Self Discovery, I think I really met myself for the first time. The Enneagram is a centuries old, personality profile model. To compare it to any other personality-type-method out there would not be doing it justice. It's too in depth for me to explain here, so listen to Suzanne's words and then buy the book. *Bonus: Suzanne says you can find your Type by just reading this book. No confusing type-quizzes needed!  Once you learn the types of yourself, your spouse, your family of origin, your kids, and your mailman, you may want to invest in the Study Guide to explore more alone or with a group. Suzanne mentioned a lot of resources on the show. The following are links as promised: The Road Back to You Book The Road Back to You Study Guide The Road Back to You Podcast The Road Back to You Website Life in the Trinity Ministry - Suzanne's collaboration with her husband, Joe.  Toward the end of our conversation, I expressed to Suzanne my frustration with the upcoming election. She suggested we listen to her podcast episode with Michael Ware, who once worked for Obama's administration in Faith and Politics. I listened and felt my heart open. If you are a stressed out 6 worrying about the worst possible outcome like me, hearing his words will help. Road Back To You with Michael Ware. Want to know more about the Enneagram? Listen to my interviews with Enneagram Coach, Beth McCord:  Part 1  Part 2 I hope you enjoy the conversation with Suzanne as much as I did.

SC 39 Mike McHargue Finding God in the Waves

Mike McHargue is a Fundamentalist turned atheist turned Jesus follower. He now hosts the podcast, Science Mike, co-hosts The Liturgists, and is author of Finding God in the Waves: How I lost my Faith and Found it Again through Science. If you've been listening to Stumptown Christian, you know I had my own "turn of faith" this summer. I found Mike's book trailer through a friend and immediately knew I needed to contact him for an interview. Our conversation will tell you more and if you've never heard of Mike before, you'll be a new fan, I promise. Mike will be in Portland on November 20th at The Village Ballroom in NE Portland. Listen to the podcast, grab your tickets to the live event, and join me and countless others in listening to this man who seems to know the "none zone" so well.

SC 38 Carrie Newcomer The Beautiful Not Yet

Everything about Carrie Newcomer is beautiful: Her voice. Her heart. Her lyrics. Her poetry. The name of her latest CD. Everything. And after listening to this episode, you'll notice there is no other adjective I could find to adequately describe how I feel about her gifts. Listen to our conversation, get your hands on her latest book and CD, and then join me at her concert. She is a gift. SC 37 Women, The Bible, and Me

I preached twice this summer: once about women in the Old Testament and once about women in the New Testament.  In this episode, I'm telling you a little about the information I found while researching and how it's changed me and my view of "the church". Listen in and find out how original scripture language, context, and the Sunriver sky are bringing me closer to God, but further from religion. SC 36 Christian Piatt Leaving A-Holiness Behind

Christian Piatt is an a**hole.  No, really. He says so himself! But then again, aren't we all?  Piatt does a bang up job describing what the Bible says and what it doesn't. Why, oh why, do so many "Christians" stray from the true ministry of Jesus?  If you question Christianity or how some "Christians" have used the Bible for their own agendas rather than grasping the true meaning (hint: compassion) - this book is for you. Listen to our conversation as we discuss what it means to be a Jesus follower. Take the quiz and find out if you're a Christian A-hole. SC 35 Stumptown Christian's Biased Opinions on the RNC and the DNC

I know. You haven't heard enough politics lately. You want more.  I give you: my opinions on the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention.  You were waiting for this, right? I'm biased. I'm left of center. Some may say "far" left, but those are the folks who don't know me very well. I wanted to release a podcast last week after the RNC but I just couldn't. I was too depressed.  But this week? This week I'm feeling hopeful! Energized! United! Did the Democrats play on my emotions? Sure! But so did the Republicans and I'll take hope over fear any day. Here's my synopsis. SC 34 Jessica Kelley Lord Willing

Losing a child is the most painful thing I can imagine. For Jessica Kelley, it's a reality. Diagnosed with brain cancer, little Henry died at age 4. Why does God let these tragic things happen? Is it all according to His divine plan? Jessica answer is, "No." Lord Willing?: Wrestling with God's Role in My Child's Death is more than a heartbreaking memoir. While I still can't comprehend how she had the strength to write, it's also a book of hope. Listen to Jessica explain the difference between a "blueprint worldview" and a "warfare worldview". She brings up facts about the Bible I had never considered before and shares an encouraging message to anyone who has been told, "It's all part of God's plan."

SC 33 Lisa Sharon Harper The Very Good Gospel

#AltonSterling #PhilandoCastile In the 48 hours since I interviewed Lisa Sharon Harper of Sojourners about her newest book, The Very Good Gospel: How Everything Wrong Can Be Made Right, two black men have been killed at the hand of a police officer.  These are not isolated incidents. Lisa's chapter, Shalom and Race will give you quite a list naming black men and women killed at the hand of law enforcement. The good news is, Lisa gives great insight regarding how we can find peace no matter our skin color. The bad news is, the nation needed to read this 2 nights ago. The Very Good Gospel leads us to find Shalom. Shalom and Race, and Gender, and Nations, and Creation, and God, and Ourselves, and Families, and Death, and...Life.  Normally, I release podcasts on Fridays. This week, it's going out early. The sooner I can get this information to you, the better. Obviously, there are a few million people who need to hear it. SC 32 The Convergence Lectionary Part 2

I hope you had a chance to catch Part 1 of my conversation with these Biblical scholars. In this episode Eric and Floyd get deeper into the details of the Convergence Lectionary. In Eric's words, here's what the curriculum with cover: For those of you unfamiliar with the Lectionary, it's a group of Bible texts that tens of thousands of churches use every week for worship, which means it has a profound influence on the beliefs and actions of millions of Christians. In the case of the Convergence Lectionary, it's not biblical texts but 6-week THEMES that focus on CRITICAL AREAS that society actively needs to talk about in our day and find higher ground. Here are the 12 six-week THEMES of the Convergence Lectionary, organized according to the Three Great Loves that Jesus himself said were most important:  Christian love of God includes: 1. Walking fully in the path of Jesus, without denying the legitimacy of other paths that God may provide for humanity; 2. Listening for God's Word which comes through daily prayer and meditation, studying the ancient testimonies which we call Scripture, and attending to God's present activity in the world; 3. Celebrating the God whose Spirit pervades and whose glory is reflected in all of God's Creation, including the earth and its ecosystems, the sacred and secular, the Christian and non-Christian, the human and non-human; 4. Expressing our love in worship that is as sincere, vibrant, and artful as it is scriptural. Christian love of neighbor includes:  5. Engaging people authentically, as Jesus did, treating all as creations made in God's very image, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical or mental ability, nationality, or economic class; 6. Standing, as Jesus does, with the outcast and oppressed, the denigrated and afflicted, seeking peace and justice with or without the support of others; 7. Preserving religious freedom and the church's ability to speak prophetically to government by resisting the commingling of church and state; 8. Walking humbly with God, acknowledging our own shortcomings while honestly seeking to understand and call forth the best in others, including those who consider us their enemies; Christian love of self includes:  9. Basing our lives on the faith that in Christ all things are made new and that we, and all people, are loved beyond our wildest imagination – for eternity; 10. Claiming the sacredness of both our minds and our hearts, and recognizing that faith and science, doubt and belief serve the pursuit of truth; 11. Caring for our bodies and insisting on taking time to enjoy the benefits of prayer, reflection, worship, and recreation in addition to work; 12. Acting on the faith that we are born with a meaning and purpose; a vocation and ministry that serve to strengthen and extend God's realm of love. SC 31 Convergence Lectionary Part 1

Justice. Peace. Love.  The lessons of Jesus lead to these three things. The ways of our world? Not so much. I sat down with Dr. Jim McDonald, President of San Francisco Theological Seminary, Rev. Floyd Thompkins, Director of the Center for Innovation in Ministry, and Dr. Eric Elnes, author and leader of Convergence Christianity and Senior Minister at Omaha's Countryside Community Church. Our conversation starts with the need for conversation among our communities in order to pursue justice, peace, love AND friendship. SC 30 Gender Bathrooms, Rape Culture, and Other Fun Topics

I've held off podcasting about the gender bathroom fiasco for a while thinking all had been said. However, since hearing about Brock Turner's verdict of serving 6 months in county jail after raping a woman because anything longer may "damage his future" - I figured it was time to put my two cents in the mix. I'll keep the writing short. Listen to the podcast and let me know your opinions. Rape culture exists in our country. Just like racism and anything other subject some Christians are denying.  Get your head out of the sand. Listen to my podcast and read the following links to educate yourself. And to Brock Turner's victim: Thank you, dear one. Thank you for being brave. Thank you for letting women have a voice. SC 28 Jaqueline Bussie Outlaw Christian

Jaqueline Bussie is so full of wisdom, you'll want to record everything she says. Lucky for me, I did. Lucky for all of us, she wrote a book full of said wisdom. In Outlaw Christian: Finding Authentic Faith by Breaking the "Rules", Jacqueline takes Christian rules and urges us to toss them. I'm not talking about Biblical rules. I'm talking about rules which somehow evolved and seeped into our culture as law. Outlaw Christian dispells myths and clichés, but the most meaningful parts of the book, as well as our interview, were Jacqueline's insistence on vulnerability and authenticity as well as her prescription for hope. In this podcast episode, Jacqueline shares of her husband's rape. You read that right. Her husband was victim of a tragic crime and yet, the couple has hope. And joy. And healing. If that's not the actions of Jesus followers, I don't know what is. Listen carefully to Jacqueline's words. Then buy her book to keep on your shelf for reference. If you're like me, you'll need her encouragement repeatedly. Links discussed in show: Jacqueline's Blog Outlaw Christian:Finding Authentic Faith by Breaking the "Rules"

SC 27 Brendan Jones The Alaskan Laundry

I really need to get to Alaska. I've said this before, after interviewing Iditarod musher,Debbie Moderow.  Now after talking with author, Brendan Jones, the pull is even stronger. After reading his novel, The Alaskan Laundry, I can almost feel the frigid air. My interview with this Stegner fellow and current Sitka tugboat resident will appeal to two groups of people: Those who love to read a good story. Those who want to write a good story. Brendan takes us through a fictional journey based on part of his own life. He's full of encouragement to those penning their own works of words. My life is better after having a conversation with him. You, too, can have a conversation with Brendan. He'll be promoting The Alaskan Laundry at the downtown Powell's location on Tuesday, May 10 at 7:30pm. Stop by and hear his fascinating tale about finding Alaska to find himself.  And fish. He found lots and lots of fish. Links discussed: Brendan's website The Alaskan Laundry

SC 25 Peter Walker Downside Up

Peter Walker wrote a book. A picture book. About Jesus. For grownups. (Stacey Chomiak illustrated) Sound intriguing? It is. Sound convicting? Maybe not, but it is. The book, written in Seuss style rhyme, is Downside Up: A Gospel Story, Re-Dreamed. Peter digs into the real meaning of the Gospels and in a way we have no excuses not to understand, tells us about the love of Jesus. It's genius. I wish I'd thought of it. I didn't, but Peter did and did so brilliantly. He also pulled in Stacey Chomiak for the illustrations. Oh, what I would do for some of these pictures on my wall. Follow Peter's blog. Follow Peter's website. And buy this book; for yourself, for your neighbors, for your pastor. SC 24 Elizabeth Esther Spiritual Sobriety

Elizabeth Esther was part of a fundamentalist, religious cult. Her book, Girl At The End Of The World: My Escape from Fundamentalism in Search of Faith with a Future, captivated me from the beginning. Stories about how families become involved in cults is always interesting/shocking to me. In Elizabeth’s case - the religious organization’s founder was her grandfather. Elizabeth’s next book releases on April 19th. Spiritual Sobriety: Stumbling Back To Faith When Good Religion Goes Bad is more than spiritual abuse recovery testimony. Her words will be an encouragement to anyone who suffers from hurtful church experiences. Scripture, quotes, and journaling questions allow readers to make the book personal. Listen to Elizabeth share her story. The woman is smart, funny, and real. I bet you’ll agree. SC 23 Kathleen Peters Straight Up Real Mamas

Kathleen Peters is the real deal. For real. Really.  When Kathleen realized her Facebook feed solely showed shiny, happy people she stepped forward and said a big "UH-UH. That's not real." She created the social media group Straight Up Real Mamas just four weeks ago and already membership is exploding. I published a blog post on being real.  Reading posts on Straight Up Real Mamas inspires me to show myself more often. Listen to Kathleen motivate and then check out the community she began.  I'll most likely meet you there. SC 22 The Enneagram Coach Part 2

Did you do your homework? If you've listened to Part 1 of this podcast series with Beth McCord, you had an assignment. Do you know your enneagram type? After Beth and I stopped recording, she spent another hour on the phone with me talking about the types in my family and our relationships with each other. It's almost like she was psychic. How did she know our behaviors? I highly recommend contacting Beth if you'd like to know more. She really did help me see things I didn't pick up even in years of therapy. My parenting style has changed in the past week and I'm learning to affirm each of my daughters in the way they need. Let me know what you learn. It would be fun to keep this conversation going.

SC 21 Enneagram Coach, Beth McCord Part 1

The Enneagram is rocking my world. I'm slow to catch up with this personality profile craze. I went my whole adult life explaining myself with the Meyers Briggs terminology ENFJ. Surely all personality profiles are similar, yes? No. In the short time I've known about the 9 types of the Enneagram, I've learned so much more about myself, my husband, and both daughters. We are a therapy family - no strangers to exploring our innermost emotional pasts and identifying how our present is affected. Yet, in the brief introductions to Type 6 (me), Type 5 (Edd), Type 1 (Emma, 16), and Type 8 (Annika, 13) my daily world is slowly making sense. The Enneagram Coach, Beth McCord, assists others in learning about their Enneagram types, but also helps each client know how to get through life a little easier with the knowledge. She explains each type as viewing the world with different color glasses. We can experience the same event, but our outlook will depend on our individual approaches to the event. Listen to Beth explain the Enneagram and find out how you can benefit from this knowledge. You have homework: Beth has so much information, we decided to make this a 2 part podcast. Today you will learn the background of the Enneagram and how knowing your type will open your world view. After listening - you need to learn your type. Next week, we'll go over what each number means in great detail. Find Beth on her website, her Facebook page, or on Twitter. As we explain in the podcast, completing a detailed assessment is way more beneficial then the shorter ones you can find online. SC 20 Chris Guillebeau Born For This

Chris Guillebeau is an adventurer.  The blogger of The Art of Non-Conformity has written books inspiring people all over the world. I mean this literally. Chris has been to every country in the world and hosts World Domination Summit right here in Portland, OR every year.  His book, The $100 Start Up, encourages people to follow their passions and learn how to incorporate their loves into what they do for a living. Happiness of Pursuit motivated me in a way no other self-help book has done. I related to the joy in the quest and used his techniques to derive motivating life goals. His latest work coming on April 5, Born For This, helps readers find the work they were born to do. Seeing as both my husband and I are not employed at this moment, interviewing Chris about this proves to be good timing. His book tour kicks off on the date of his book release. Find out if he'll be in your town here. Listen to Chris talk about what he has done to make his life count. We only get one of these life things, you know. What will you do with yours?

SC 19 Bethany Hoang, Kristen Johnson The Justice Calling

The Justice Calling: Where Passion meets Perseverance, a meaningful read written by two women with a heart for loving God's children.  Bethany Hoang has seen firsthand the injustices in the world through her work with International Justice Mission. Together they've created a piece of work explaining and encouraging readers to step into what God has commanded from Genesis to Revelation.  Listen to their words. Hear their passion. Buy their book. SC 18 Amy Zellmer Brain Injury Awareness Month

I reached out to Amy last year after reading her Huffington Post article 5 Things Every TBI Survivor Wants You To Understand.   I didn't know the acronym for Traumatic Brain Injury, but I knew the symptoms about which she wrote.  As a stroke survivor, my disability is labeled an acquired brain injury and not a TBI, though I feel a kinship with those who experience these same symptoms. March is Brain Injury Awareness month. Amy is fundraising to be in Washington DC on March 16, the day Congress will host speakers on Capitol Hill. Listen to Amy tell her story, and support her efforts. You can follow Amy on her website, FacesOfTBI.com, and buy her book, Life with A Traumatic Brain Injury. My hope is that you will learn a bit about TBI and carry on in compassion knowing people all around us suffer with something - even if it's not easy to see.

SC 17 Ken Wytsma Create vs Copy

Ken Wytsma has done a ton of things. Good things. Things like starting a church. And founding The Justice Conference. And writing books. And presidenting a college. (That's a verb, right?) And, most importantly, with his wife is raising 4 daughters.  Last year, Ken wrote a book which changed my life. On March 1, his latest work will be made available. I'm willing to bet this book will change others' lives as well.  Create vs. Copy is Ken's plea for God's children to discover their gifts and talents. He begins with, "When people say, 'I don't have a creative bone in my body,' not only is it untrue, it's denying  the image of God in us." I have said the above statement countless times. Where does that idea come from?  Ken explores our creativity aligning with God's purpose and shares how others have been able to change the world because of it.

SC 16 Zac Gandara Losing Our Religion

What happens when you leave a mega-church and denounce all religion in order to follow Jesus? Zac Gandara did just that and now he serves his community by being the best neighbor he can be. His podcast, Losing Our Religion, explores conversations not usually found between church walls. Listen to him here, then subscribe to his podcast.  *Zac is candid and speaks his PG-13/R rated mind. Debbie Clarke Moderow - Fast Into The Night

Sometimes you think you'll know what a book will be about and it ends up being completely different.  I knew Debbie Clarke Moderow's latest work, Fast Into The Night: A Woman, Her Dogs, and Her Journey North on the Iditarod Trail, would be about a race in Alaska. I didn't know I'd take away lessons in determination and fall in love with dogs who are not my own.  You don't need to be a dog lover, an Iditarod expert, or even an adventurer to fall in love with Fast Into The Night. But if you're looking for a non-fiction piece to motivate you and touch your heart, Debbie's book needs to be your next pick. Portlanders can meet Debbie Clarke Moderow at Powell's on Burnside Wednesday, February 17 at 7:30.  Non-locals can buy the book here. Get ready for the ride of a lifetime.

    In The Name Of Love

I spent a weekend with 28 amazing teenagers. The topic: Love. What does it mean? Why do people do horrible things in the name of love? What if I can't love myself? On this podcast, I share what we discussed. Do humans have the ability to show agape? Listen in and let me know your thoughts.

SC 13 Can You Be Colorblind? A Conversation with Cliff and Diana Chappell and Matt O'Donel About White Privilege and Racism

Black. White. Brown. Do you see the color of people's skin? Or are you "colorblind"?  If you answered "colorblind", I'm willing to bet you are Caucasian.  There's a whole world of racism out there. To deny it is to bury your head in the sand. If we truly want racism to be ancient history, it's time to acknowledge it still exists. Pastor Cliff and Diana Chappell share how racism has been present throughout their lives. Matt O'Donel shares why, as of seven months ago, he sees racism in a whole new light. Listen to their stories and then click the following links to read more about their passions. Pastor Cliff blogs at Culture's Voice and is founder of Man Up Ministries. Matt O'Donel shares his #JusticeInJanuary posts here. Teach your kids true history. Share your findings on social media. There are stories people of white privilege don't know. If Americans sincerely strive to be "colorblind", we need to know the past so we don't repeat it. Or, as the case may be, continue in it.

SC 12 Water 1st International with Molly Briscoe

What do you think about water?  Do you think about water? What's in your mind as you stand under the shower for 20 minutes, or you let the water run until the temperature is just right, or when you forgo the tap for a $3.99 bottle of H2O? If you're like me - you probably don't give it a second thought. Until, that is, you hear someone like Molly Briscoe of Water 1st International talk about communities without clean water. Households where women and children travel 3 miles one way to the nearest source, carrying five pounds of water back to where they live, using the same liquid that carries dirt and disease. Then you think about water. A lot.  Listen to Molly and ponder how you can help provide clean water to all. It's pretty simple. We just have to do it. More information can be found on the Water 1st website and Facebook page.

SC 11 Shattering Stigma: Mental Illness and the Church with Leanne Sype

Is talking about mental illness still taboo? Some say yes, some no. If you answered yes, what do you say about cancer? Diabetes? The flu? If these subjects are not a stigma for you, than neither should mental illness. Shattering Stigma with Stories is a conference founded by Tara Rolstad, and includes a leadership team and group of speakers encouraging others to shed light on bi-polar disorder, depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders and more.  Do you suffer from a mental illness? Does a loved one? Are you in ministry? Do you interact with other people? If you answered "yes" to any of the above, Shattering Stigma is for you. Listen to the words of Leadership Team member, Leanne Sype. If you have any questions, comment below and we'll get those questions answered for you. Shattering Stigma takes place on January 30 at Lake Grove Presbyterian Church. Click here for the website and more information.

    SC 10 Goals and Quests

2016, I'm ready for you!  In this week's podcast I talk about resolutions vs. goals and quests. Chris Guillebeau's book, The Happiness of Pursuit, influenced how I'm approaching this new year. I'll tell you about past "quests" and why I think they are so much better than resolutions. Also, I talk about the Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. Holy cow, that book is...well...life changing. Hear about how I've changed because of it and why, for me, it doesn't just apply to material things. Have you read it? Comment below and tell me what the ideas have done for you. Are you a newsletter subscriber? Sign up here and get monthly newsletters sharing my favorite things - and other news. Do it now and I'll send you December's edition where I list my favorite books of 2015.  Tell me your quest, goal, or resolution for 2016. I'd love to hear what is energizing you this year.

SC 09 Maura Sweeney, Ambassador of Happiness

I dare you to listen to this podcast and not come out a better person.  Maura Sweeney, Goodwill Ambassador, travels the world encouraging others to find their inner happiness. Listening to Maura, you can't help but let some of the bad slide away in order to focus on the good.  We talk about the holidays and the possibility to have a "Merry" Christmas with so much pain, turmoil, and conflict in the world. Is there really a wish for Peace on Earth, Goodwill Toward Men? Hear Maura's words and get ready to become a "living holiday yourself."  "We can either gather around conflict and add to that sense of conflict, or we can choose to be calm in the world." ~ Maura Sweeney This season, I'm choosing to be the calm. (Although please keep this from my teenage daughters. They will question I've truly made this choice.) Read Maura's words on her website and in her books, then watch and listen to videos and podcast. SC 06 Ethical Shopping with Tori Rask and Bethany Tran

In this episode, I talk about some of my favorite companies supporting fair trade and invite Tori Rask of Noonday Collection and Bethany Tran of The Root Collective to share how the companies they are with support ethical shopping.  If you're in the Portland metro area, you are invited to Kaleo Covenant Church on Sunday November 29 at 11:30 to shop Noonday Collection and LuLaRoe, a company offering women's clothing made in the U.S.A.  The following are vendors mentioned on this episode: Mata Traders SERRV Thistle Farms MadeFair MarketPlace India Karma Foundation - Supporting Syrian Refugees To the Market Overdressed The Book/Shopping Directory If you have a favorite organization supporting fair trade, share it in the comments below. SC 05 Jerry Herships, Last Call

I won't lie. I'm a little jealous of Reverend Jerry Herships ministry, After Hours.  He has church in bars and feeds homeless people. Really, is there any more to life than this? Jerry used to be "that guy" in Los Angeles - the actor whose face you may recognize but name you can't place. Fast forward to now...God had big plans for Jerry's name and every hungry person in Denver knows what it is.  I didn't need to ask Jerry why he wrote his book. His life is a story we all need to know. Now we need to copy his actions ourselves. Listen to Jerry here, buy his book, AND Portlanders get to meet him in person this SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22: Rose City UMC, 5830 NE Alameda St, Portland, 97213: Jerry preaches at the 9 and 11 services AND/OR BTU Brasserie, 5846 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland, 97213: Make PB&J sandwiches for our hungry neighbors and hear Jerry talk about his book, Last Call, and his ministry in Denver.
