Pixel Project Radio: A Video Game Podcast

Pixel Project Radio is a video game podcast dedicated to analyzing the games we love. Each week, we play through a videogame and talk about it in a book club format. We summarize the plot beats while also analyzing the themes, discussing the mechanics, and generally talking about what worked and what didn't for us. It's a celebration of all things gaming, and whether you're playing every day or liked games as a kid, we've got something for you.

Tomba is pure "early video game" in more ways than one; join Rick and George as they discuss the signature "Events" system, the surprising amount of freedom (and frustration) throughout, good-time music, and beatin' up pigs. After the wake of Brad's self-satisfying redemptive warpath, she finally knows autonomy. Aaron (Super Pod Network) joins to discuss whether Joyful is able to ask the uncomfortable, meaningful questions that Painful asked of the players...or whether it lives meekly in the shadow of its older sibling. While sharing a namesake and a creative team, there is far more about Chrono Cross that differs from its older sibling than there is that makes them alike. Co-host Chris (Retrograde Amnesia podcast) joins the show to mull over what works—and more importantly why. Chrono Cross takes a lot of risks in its battle system, its cast of colorful weirdos, and, especially, its narrative identity...and that is where this conversation begins. Between the gorgeous animation, the attention paid to competitive mechanics, and a soundtrack that's closer to "good jazz" than most games get (you too, New Vegas, sorry), it's easy to gush over Skullgirls. Perhaps this is why it's marooned on the PS3 and the PS3 only to this day! This is a very special game, and in this episode Rick and Bill break down why it deserves far more love than it gets: the infectious music, the self-referential and -parodic writing, the gorgeous marriage of 2D and 3D, and more. 3D Dot Game Heroes does so much right. Let My People Go | Detroit Become Human Analysis (Ep. 133)

"What's more important to you, Connor? Your investigation, or the life of this android? Decide who you are: an obedient machine, or a living being endowed with free will."This week, Rick and Nomad (The Retro Wildlands) conclude their analysis on Detroit: Become Human. As both the thematic elements and the narrative ramp to their climaxes and conclusions, some ends tie up nicely. Others, significantly less so. A mixture of exciting action, heartfelt moments, and indefensible world history allusions - all of this and more, in the finale for this miniseries's analysis. At All Costs | Detroit Become Human Analysis (Ep. 132)

"That's what you get for having a dream. It always ends up the same way: tears and disillusionment. Believe me, you're better off being erased and feeling nothing."Rick is joined once again by Nomad (The Retro Wildlands) to continue their analysis on Detroit: Become Human. As Kara and Alice continue to search for shelter, gruff Detroit cop Hank struggles to find camaraderie in his new Android partner, Connor. More questions of ethics and philosophy, including love and suicide, within. To Break Free | Detroit Become Human Analysis (Ep. 131)

"The world doesn't like those who are different, Markus. Don't let anyone tell you who you should be."This week marks the start of the analysis series on Detroit: Become Human! Rick is joined by Nomad (The Retro Wildlands) to dissect Quantic Dream's 2018 narrative-based game. Citizenship, sentience, equity...are artificial intelligence machines - that is to say, androids - deserving of such things? What are the ethical implications of such a high level of integration in society? For better or for worse, David Cage's tale sidesteps pondering questions of ethics and philosophy for a story centered around a cast of likeable characters. Star studded, too. This episode covers through Chapter 5.
