In Your Presence Lenten Series Week 6
Welcome to Pocketful of Grace, a podcast of Grace Lutheran Church as we begin our Lenten podcast, “In Your Presence” which comes to us from Psalm 51. We say that in Lent we journey to return to God. Our returning is a lifelong ebb and flow in faith. As we travel, do we pause to remember that we are in God’s presence? Can we linger to receive the closeness of God’s love and mercy? In God’s presence we are renewed and empowered to walk with Jesus for our own wholeness and for the sake of God’s world. This podcast will work as a worship companion to the Year A gospels, our “All In” devotion and our Midweek worship series on trust. Each week we will offer breath prayer, Scripture, music and reflection to support your awareness of God’s presence, almost like a mini worship break whenever you listen. This week's music: "What Wondrous Love is This." John Carter's setting of this Appalachian folk hymn, Copyright © 2011 Beckenhorst Press, Inc. All rights reserved. God's Gift and Promise and Power
Sometimes it is hard to see God's presence in the midst of chaos and diversity. And yet, the work of the Holy Spirit among us weaves people into one in ways we can only marvel at if we pause to consider it. Let's pause and wonder at God's gifts and promises but also God's power. Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul, of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA discuss the prayer and lessons for the Sunday of Pentecost:Acts 2:1-4, 6-7, 12-17, 21Psalm 104: 30-35bRomans 8:14-17Today's music: "Holy Spirit, Truth Divine" a public domain hymn sung by Grace Musicians and produced by Graham and Laurel Sanders.Worship resources from www.sundaysandseasons.com, copyright 2022, Augsburg Fortress. God's Power at Work- Ascension Day
Those early disciples knew so little and Jesus basically told them "Some things are not for you to know. The Spirit will guide you." Aren't we the same today? Their life of prayer and gathering strengthened them in uncharted days as did the Holy Spirit not always fully visible but powerfully at work. Unplug and recharge with us as we discuss Ascension Day, which is Thursday May 29, 2025. Without Love Our Actions Mean Nothing
If we don't interpret the Bible from the perspective of being grounded in love, we end up making some false journeys, taking wrong turns. Lots of things we do have mixed motives. Jesus reminds us his motive was always love. In this season of Resurrections, we are invited to see love grounding new life in the resurrected life of Jesus, in the church centered in Christ, and the life into which God will be bring us all to dwell in eternity. Pastor Scott Schul and Pastor Carolyn Hetrick, of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA share a prayer and discuss two of thew lessons for the 5th Sunday of Easter: Acts 11:1-18Revelation 21:1-6Today's closing prayer: from the World Council of Churches, at https://www.oikoumene.org/resources/prayer-cycle(Bangladesh. Here we are preparing to enter Holy Week. Journeys are not just about getting from Point A to Point B. We have walked with Jesus and each other and we will be walking still. Journey Through Lent: The Blessing of Relationships
We are wired for relationship in the very way we are created. Created in the image of God who created in love. Love is a relationship and our very essence is bound up in God's vision. That vision is blurred at best and fractured at worst, due to the effect of what we call "sin." Lent is a time to be open with God about our dissatisfactions and our desire for a deeper life of faith. Journey Through Lent- Still My Fears
When this world makes us fearful, we can believe no one else will take care of us, or be led into temptation to demonize others even when it isn't true. We can get caught up in a vicious cycle of fear. Allowing God into our pain, to interrupt our fear cycle can change the direction of our life. Following the lead of the lyrics, the anthem alternates between moments of quiet, tension, and release, with an underlying thread of stillness and calm."O, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus," (Thomas J. Unto Us a Child is Born: Prince of Peace
We are in the final days of the season of Advent, that has led up to the celebration of Jesus’ birth, a time to focus upon waiting, preparing and hoping, as we recall the historic birth of Jesus, and await the return of Christ in the fullness of time. We can also train our hearts and minds to look for and expect to see Christ entering our world in the here and now in between. Each week we have focused upon one of the ways that Jesus, born a baby, brings into the world what we truly need. This week we focus upon Jesus as "Prince of Peace."We can pause and reflect in our own seasons of waiting and hoping the world now, waiting for Jesus the Christ to return to bring heaven fully to earth and waiting to see glimpses of Christ among us now to sustain us. Unto Us a Child is Born: Everlasting Father
We continue in the season of Advent, the weeks leading up to the celebration of Jesus’ birth, a time to focus upon waiting, preparing and hoping, as we recall the historic birth of Jesus, and await the return of Christ in the fullness of time. We can also train our hearts and minds to look for and expect to see Christ entering our world in the here and now in between. Each week we will focus upon one of the ways that Jesus, born a baby, brings into the world what we truly need. This week we focus upon Jesus as "Everlasting Father."We can pause and reflect in our own seasons of waiting and hoping the world now, waiting for Jesus the Christ to return to bring heaven fully to earth and waiting to see glimpses of Christ among us now to sustain us. Learning To...Be Amazed
"Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to Be Amazed" as we join the women who show up at the tomb of Jesus expecting to grieve but are met with astounding news- Christ is Risen! Have you ver heard something that seemed too big to take in even when it was good news? Or maybe a burden was rolled away and it seems too good to be true. Or maybe like Peter there is a place where you wish you could have a "re-do." Wherever you have been or hope to be amazed, Jesus' story with us continues. Let's keep learning and rejoicing together! Our in person Bible study at Grace resumes on APRIL 3RD and stay tuned for another podcast series in the fall for Advent. Today's Scripture: Mark 16:1-8Today's Music: "Jesus Christ Is Risen Today"- Thomas Keesecker's setting of Jesus Christ is Risen Today, from Easter Hope, was recorded with Adam H. "Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to Give Ourselves Away." The woman in Bethany honored Jesus by anointing him. It demonstrated she really knew who Jesus was. She gave everything she had to him- including her heart. Learning to...See- A Lenten Podcast
"Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to See." We are not given the gospel, God’s good news, as a way to avoid mortality or loss. Jesus is predicting his own death, which is overwhelming to consider, but Jesus also challenges us to ask: Are there ways we love our life so much we fail to see the harm it does to others? Are there ways in which we should let our way “die” so something new can come to life? Where do we need to see Jesus?Today's scripture: John 12:20-26Today's music: "Air Andante," a public domain 'air' part of a Baroque-era collection called "Select Aires or Duets for 2 German Flutes and a German Flute and Bass by Handel and other authors," published during their lifetime by John Walsh. www.imslp.org. Learning To...Love- A Lenten Podcast
"Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to Love." Nicodemus was one of the religious leaders of his day. At this point in his story, he wasn’t a follower of Jesus – that would’ve been a very risky thing for him to do. And so under cover of night he came to visit Jesus and asked questions that probed at the scope and depth of God’s love. Listen to how Jesus responded with love. Today's scripture: John 3:14-21Today's music: Public domain version of the second movement (Adagio) of C.P.E. Bach's Sonata in a minor for solo flute, available from IMSLP at www.imslp.org. "Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to Focus." Jesus is telling people their way of living has lost focus. We too have ways we need God to restore us, but change is hard even when we know we need it. Even in these times, we can count on Jesus to cts out of mercy for our world. Today's scripture: John 2:13-22Today's music: "O, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus" (Thomas J. Williams; arr. Molly Ijames). Learning To...Rethink A Lenten Podcast
"Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to Rethink." Jesus tells his followers that everything they thought was wrong. He will face rejection and they will face struggles too. The savior we receive is hardly like popular figures in our world. Can we rethink who Jesus is and what it means to follow even when the changes we face are hard, unpopular or inconvenient? We know that love carries Jesus into our midst in these times. "Wait" Advent podcast
How do we capture the sacred nature of these weeks we call Advent, to reflect, make space and prepare our hearts and selves to be placed into God's story? This week Mary travels to see Elizabeth as they are both awaiting births. It is a time of waiting, between what has been and what is yet to be. How do we wait? We invite you to step away from what is filling our lives, yet unfinished to allow God to speak. Where do you need God to meet you, to send someone to wait with you? Who might God send you to be with? May our questions become holy conversations and invitations into hope. "Making Room" in Advent
In these weeks leading up to Christmas, our lives can feel so full we perhaps hope and pray no one asks us to make room for one more thing. How do we capture the sacred nature of these weeks we call Advent, to reflect, make space and prepare our hearts and selves to be placed into God's story? Mary hears she is chosen to bear Jesus in to the world, to make room for new life. We invite you to step away from what is taking up all the space in your life. As we remember Christ' birth, we breathe, and make room for Christ, so we can join in God's possibility and encounter God's presence now and hope for the future.
